00:02Kelly Wilkinson was stabbed and set alight outside her Gold Coast home in April 2021 by her estranged husband Brian
00:10Johnston, who's now serving a life sentence in prison.
00:13A coronial inquest which began on the Gold Coast today is examining the interactions the 27-year-old had with
00:19Queensland police prior to her death.
00:22The inquest has heard police were first alerted to Miss Wilkinson's situation about three weeks before she was killed.
00:29That first contact resulted in a police protection notice and then a temporary protection order issued by a magistrate.
00:35That prevented Johnston from contacting Miss Wilkinson, who was by that time categorised as being in a high-risk domestic
00:42violence situation.
00:44The court heard that two weeks later, after Miss Wilkinson reported several breaches of the protection order by Johnston, the
00:51Gold Coast Domestic Violence Prevention Centre asked police to review her case.
00:55That request detailed concerns Miss Wilkinson had for her safety and her fear of Johnston because of his history in
01:03the U.S. military.
01:04Detective Inspector Susan Newton, who conducted an internal review of the Queensland police response to Miss Wilkinson's reports, told the
01:12court the request had been denied because the Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch was already in contact with Miss Wilkinson
01:19and there were no fresh allegations at the time.
01:22The court heard that interaction was the last that police had with Miss Wilkinson's case before she was murdered a
01:29week later.
