00:00The move by opposition MPs to abstain from voting on a bill that would have limited the
00:06time spent in the top office underscores their rejection of Anwar Ibrahim's efforts to prevent
00:12a Prime Minister from clinging to power, an analyst says.
00:16Shahruddin Awang Ahmad of University Malaysia Sabah said the initiative should have been
00:22seen by Perkatan Nasional as a reform that transcended partisan politics.
00:26He told FMT that refusing to back such a bill calls into question the opposition's
00:33sincerity about pushing for reforms that strengthen democracy.
00:37On Monday, the Dewan Rakyat failed to pass the Constitution Amendment Bill 2026, which sought
00:43to limit the Prime Minister's tenure to ten years.
00:46Ahmad Zahruddin Sani, Ahmad Sabri of Global Asia Consulting said the MPs who abstained from
00:52voting as well as the absentees had displayed a lack of discipline.
00:57He said some of these MPs had called for reforms in the past but chose to abstain or not to
01:03show up when given the opportunity to limit the Prime Minister's term.
