00:02Distressing details emerge of seven-year-old Mackay's last days before his death.
00:08The Kaurna-Nurunga boy's father, 43-year-old Shane Mackenzie Wanganine,
00:13previously pleaded guilty to criminally neglecting him in February 2022.
00:18A prosecutor told the court Mackay was suffering symptoms,
00:22including stomach cramps and hallucinations, in the 16 hours before his death,
00:28and said Wanganine failed to get him medical help when he was experiencing significant pain and harm.
00:35He said Mackay was diagnosed with constipation three days before he died,
00:40but a post-mortem examination found he died of pneumonia and sepsis.
00:44He said the boy's lungs were almost double the size of a healthy seven-year-old's
00:49because of infection and fluid build-up.
00:52Wanganine's lawyer told the court his client had no good reason
00:56to believe Mackay was in any serious danger
00:59after being incorrectly advised by medical professionals
01:02that he was experiencing constipation.
01:06He added that Wanganine should not be sentenced to jail
01:09as he's already experienced the worst punishment of all,
01:13the loss of his son.
01:15Wanganine faces a maximum penalty of 15 years behind bars
01:19and is due to be sentenced next week.
