00:45than intimidating appearances you got to be a big guy but you can't be a slug they had the ability
00:51to run over people you you can you have to be able to run around people because speed plus mass

00:58force acceleration some formula like like that is a lot of bruised up defenders
01:13but they also were extremely elusive
01:15how could a guy that big do the do-si-do they made their living moving piles the whole thing
01:22would just shift you could not stop him he'd get his four yards no matter what oh my gosh that
01:28is sheer
01:29power their power became their identity come on ride this bus you can ride it buses tanks and trucks
01:38trampled their way to the top of our list team rolling power driving bulldozing and we're counting
01:46them down the best ever beginning with a nightmare in Kansas City another great nickname the Nigerian

03:58a track star in his native Nigeria a Koya came to the Chiefs with exceptional strength and speed
04:04but his football skills were unpolished he had a limited football background I think he was
04:11how can a guy that big be a track star he's he's he's African athletes they're they're different
04:19they are not from this planet a 24 years old or something when he first started to play
04:26are you okay yeah a hundred percent yeah good once Koya caught on he was unstoppable
04:35in 1989 our number 10 power back beat Barry Sanders for the NFL rushing title and carried the Chiefs
04:42into the playoffs for just the second time since Super Bowl four Christian keep it up keep it up as

04:51got involved in what we were doing from an offensive standpoint he was one of the two or three key
04:56guys he might have been the first modern day power back who had break it was the third time since

06:20they were saying sweet they made us he made a sweet dreams pun because
06:26originally okoye was at nine and all star was at ten they updated the list
06:31i mean i know i'm gonna get got

06:40i mean it's like watching a video game it's like so absurd

08:02there are times when i watch marshawn lynch runs that i forget that he had that run

08:09marshawn lynch makes lasting impressions on his opponents
08:12leading the nfl in broken tackles in 2013 and 2014
08:18i forgot that he punished 12 different giants linebackers
08:23bounced off him as if he were a nerf ball
08:25the whole team can be on him and you're just not bringing him down
08:29beast mode barrels over runs around and knocks down giants defenders
08:34he's a really hard man to bring down and he moves people
08:39he had a run against the eagles a couple years ago where he went into the pile and i swear
08:44to god he disappeared
08:45lynch looks for the running room on the right side still gets a little pressure he keeps going
08:50keeps his legs going he's into the touchdown
08:58our number nine power back has a strong base and uses his feet to make an imprint on our list
09:05he has great balance and he always keeps his feet moving
09:09he's so much quicker than people think he is
09:12you think you have him tackle for loss
09:14and he gains you know another eight yards
09:25look at that stutter step
09:28guarantee we's the smallest shiftiest guy on this list
09:31looking at marshawn lynch you think yeah he's he's in shape he's built
09:36but you would never think he would be running guys over
09:39if you didn't know who he was
09:42lateral move by marshawn lynch he doesn't give up on the play
09:47don't you guys know you can't tackle beast mode like that
09:52he's hard to take down and he's one of those guys that
09:55you really don't like playing against
09:57i would say marshawn lynch definitely deserves a spot on the list of power backs

10:44bronislaw nagurski arrived in chicago
10:47bronco nagurski was so tough his name is bronco
10:55he's literally a horse galloping over regular human beings
11:00when bears fans saw nagurski's bruising brand of football
11:04the bronco was born
11:07no one will ever forget the powerful smashers of number three for the chicago bears

11:14i mean just the name itself spoke of a guy who was gritty and tough in that leather helmeted era

11:24all you have to know is there was a bronco nagurski
11:29and for a long time he was national football league
11:36the monsters of the midway the bears were called and bronco was the toughest of them all
11:41for seven years bronco lived up to his brawny billing on the field
11:45but off it he simply couldn't overpower papa bear
11:50bronco nagurski left pro football literally over contract squabble with george house
11:55those were tough uh-huh yeah george i was let's just say he was cheap
12:04and uh wrestling paid a lot more
12:08years and depression days and nobody had too much money to to throw around
12:13short on cash but big on bulk
12:16our number eight power back turned to throwing around grown men to boost his income
12:21he'd begun to develop a very successful wrestling career he could make more money wrestling
12:26than he could as a professional football player
12:28with his wrestling career on the rise a return to the gridiron appeared unlikely until
12:38bronco was brought back in 1943 he was during world war ii there was a manpower shortage in the league
12:43people body men were going off to fight the war
12:48nagurski was past his prime as a runner so george hallis had our number eight power back help out
12:54elsewhere but bronco's legend had one final scene
12:59that was the romantic ending to bronco's career that's mentioned by anthony hopkins in the movie
13:07at the end of the 43 season the bears trailed in a must-win game
13:12nagurski returned to the backfield it was a hollywood script in the making
13:17bears ball nagurski has it
13:21they put bronco in the game in the fourth quarter
13:23it goes back to nagurski
13:25and bronco takes him down the field
13:28they hand him the ball he gets five yards
13:31they hand him the ball he gets seven yards
13:33and they drive the length of the field
13:36chicago bears ball at the goal line and a touchdown by nagurski
13:40the bronco scores the winning touchdown
13:43and they go to the championship game and they win
13:45that was their last championship game that bronco played for that was his last few games
13:54power backs are known to display the strength of a one-man army
13:58in the 50s the rams had a tank leading the battalion out of their backfield
14:03while paul tank younger was butting heads in the rams bull elephant backfield
14:08john henry johnson was leading a gold rush in san francisco's million dollar backfield
14:16but both bruisers owed their careers to the most feared back of the late 40s

14:30marion motley is the next generation if you will fullbacks
14:35marion motley was 6'1
14:37240 pounds
14:39an enormous man in that time
14:42he was three times bigger than everyone else
14:45and you just gave him the ball and let him run
14:47marion motley had quite an afternoon busting through the tremendous yankee line
14:51and people would hang on his legs
14:53and hang on his arms
14:54and he'd just keep going
14:55motley and the browns kept winning as well
14:58capturing all four crowns in the all-american football conference
15:02well you had a great quarterback in otto graham
15:05when you combine that with somebody who can run inside the way motley did
15:09i mean how do you tackle him
15:15there's one thing
15:17you you
15:19you have
15:22three other people grab onto his legs
15:24that's how you tackle him
15:27every six yards of carry his first five years
15:31while our number seven power back of all time easily overpowered his opposition
15:35there was an even larger obstacle marion motley had to first overcome
15:41there was never any question about motley's ability to play
15:43the only question was
15:45motley was an african-american
15:47at a time when african-americans weren't playing
15:49when he first came to the league
15:51white players would step on his hand and spin around
15:53and the referee would stand right there and look at him and never said nothing
15:56i see people kick him in his face after the play has long been over

16:02he never fought back he never talked back
16:05he said i always got my revenge on the next play
16:07marion motley coming out on a trap
16:09tally to marker to wind up destroying for this day
16:16motley's efforts as a pioneer paid off
16:18blacks began to gain acceptance throughout the league
16:21but marion wasn't finished leaving his mark
16:25motley is really credited with sort of creating the draw play

17:01with motley's best years and old roster number behind him
17:06but his eight year career in cleveland was viewed by some as even greater

17:47before the boss was blowing his horn with the steelers

19:19i think it's one of the great nicknames of all time because it portrays exactly who he is as a

19:37he had the quick feet
19:38he could find the hole
19:39they give us to the bus
19:40and the bus walks into the end zone for that stealer touchdown
19:43but man he could really put the thumping on you
19:47and the bus needs clean marks all over his spine
19:50the bus shakes him off like flies
19:52the bus just on the roll baby

21:14well if you're putting together a list of
21:16the great power runners of all time
21:17Jim Taylor has to be on it
21:19he was the power back
21:21on what many people consider
21:22the ultimate power team
21:23the Lombardi Packers
21:24he was a very compact
21:26explosive runner
21:28and he hit the line
21:30with with splintering force
21:32the Bayou Blaster
21:33the Bayou Blaster
21:34leaves a scattered trail of ground
21:35as he slams for 10 well earned yards
21:39he was the only guy besides Jim Brown
21:41to lead the league in rushing yards
21:44while Jim Brown played
21:46I have Jimmy Taylor's jersey
21:48when I was growing up
21:50I was a Jimmy Taylor freak
21:52he just brought a certain toughness
21:55to the running back spot
21:56I love that guy
21:59Jim Taylor was probably as physically fit
22:03strong, well prepared as anyone on our team
22:06when he went out on the football field
22:08you knew that this was one guy
22:10that was going to give you
22:11every ounce of energy he had
22:14every play with Jim Taylor
22:16was an examination of his manhood
22:19he relished contact
22:21and he actually enjoyed colliding with defenders
22:24attack your defender
22:27instead of him attacking you
22:28try and use the right arm as a thrust
22:31to make the contact with him
22:34he seemed to be on a seek and destroy mission
22:37yeah that's...
22:38Bob Lilley who outweighs him by like 60 pounds
22:41he just ran over
22:44first battle of all the famers
22:46looking for tacklers
22:49gentlemen this is the most important play we have
22:52the play that we will run again
22:53and again and again
22:56that play of course
22:57was the famed Packers swoosing fullback
22:59in 1962 our number 5 power back

24:49it was going to be Larry Zonka
24:51Shula had a perfect system
24:53and Zonka was a guy that certainly wasn't the fastest
24:56guy that ever played
24:57but ran with tremendous power
25:00there wasn't no hip shaking
25:01there wasn't no quick feet moves
25:04you know you just had 265 pounds of pure unadulterated dynamite
25:09so far he's been all Miami
25:11all Larry Zonka, that's right
25:13his helmet looked like it had been dragged for miles behind a pickup truck
25:19he had so many collisions
25:21people tried to tackle this guy
25:22but not with the tenacity of stopping him
25:25but rather with the ability to simply hold on and try to wait for help
25:30went back to the huddle once and I looked at the guys up front
25:32I said hey man, at least slow this stuff down
25:38there was no slowing or stopping Zonka and the Dolphins in 1972
25:45touchdown Larry Zonka
25:47our number 4 power back put up the highest rushing total of his career in 72
25:53and became the only power back who has ever been perfect
25:58Politeness, however, wasn't part of his game
26:00he's the only running back in the history of the National Football League
26:04that's ever been called for unnecessary roughness on a tackler
26:08that was a shot that I took because I wanted to return a couple of earlier favors
26:13he clobbered that guy with his forearm, laid him out
26:20and kaboom!
26:21in his free safety his eyes rolled back on his head
26:24and actually spelled out jackpot when he hit the ground
26:27and it was right in front of Shula
26:29he screamed right in my face
26:30great hit, great hit at that time
26:34the flag flew in
26:35he's marking it off against us
26:37and I said you're going the wrong way
26:39he said no I'm not
26:39look what 39 did to that poor tackler
26:42yeah we got the 15 yards but we won the game so
26:49winning became customary with Zonka in the lineup
26:52except when our number 4 power back was rendered powerless by a computer
26:58this is the dream season
27:02in 1989 we did a fantasy series called dream season
27:17I haven't forgotten Steve, still looking for ya
27:21go ahead
27:22I think it was tongue in cheek
27:25but I'm not sure
27:27if I live to be 75 I'm gonna look up your boy Steve
27:30I'm gonna kick his a**
27:32he got very upset with me and refused to do
27:35well Zonka's about to turn 80 but
27:38Steve Sable didn't live to turn 75 so
27:44well
27:45at least he didn't get his butt kicked by Larry Zonka
27:50any interviews with NFL films for 10 years
27:54and it all happened in a dream season
27:57hey the 72 Dolphins barely beat the 72 Steelers
28:01and then they added 5 more Hall of Famers
28:04it's not ridiculous to say they would have lost to the 7-8 Steelers
28:11those who never faced Larry Zonka can only dream about his dominance
28:15I don't know what Zonka was like to tackle
28:17while today's players still marvel at his power
28:21how the grown men can tackle the dude
28:23they couldn't get him down there
28:24he was just the way he was running
28:25but there's a humility to this pulking runner
28:28who while powerful and perfect
28:31was just part of the
28:32he got hit like 8 times
28:348 like
28:3737 people
28:38all 11 defenders
28:39and 26 people from the stands
28:43hit Zonka
28:44and he still didn't go down
28:47we're done here
28:50the number 3 power back of all time
28:54Earl Campbell
28:58below the belt
28:59that's where the Earl Campbell conversation always starts
29:03you know not many times as a young man
29:04I've noticed another man's thighs
29:07Earl Campbell had thighs
29:09this big
29:10you got thighs as big as your waist
29:14I mean that's how big is thighs
29:15maybe I'm not giving him enough credit like this big
29:18he's the only guy I ever saw come into our locker room before the game
29:21and had his girdle on and everything
29:23and everybody's looking at his legs
29:25and was like wow
29:27they basically were
29:29paws?
29:30these are grown men
29:31talking about another grown man's thighs
29:34let's just get to some football
29:36two tree trunks
29:37with cleats at the bottom
29:40tree trunks hailed from Tyler, Texas
29:43and they took root in Houston
29:44where Earl Campbell barreled into the hearts
29:47of Oilers fans
29:49who couldn't love those Oilers?
29:51you know, Castorini's their quarterback
29:52their coach wears a cowboy hat
29:54and they got this big, mean bowling ball of a running back in Earl Campbell
29:58it was a marriage made in heaven
30:00Houston, Texas
30:01and the Tyler Rhodes
30:02they basically lined him up
30:04and ran him 30, 40 times a game
30:07Earl not only makes the ground game go
30:10but sets up Dan Pastorini's air attack as well
30:13we had pretty simple game plans
30:15I'd look at him in the huddle and say, are you tired?
30:16he said, yeah, I'll throw a couple
30:18one guy cannot bring Earl Campbell down
30:20it takes two guys to bring Earl Campbell down
30:23he ran with amazing and destructive power
30:29understatement
30:29although he was known best for his smash
30:32Earl was also
30:34able to dash
30:36Campbell that's a 30, 35, 40, 45, he's open
30:39our number three power back ran away with the league's rushing title
30:43in his first three seasons
30:45Earl was scary
30:46because of the power and his speed
30:49he had the ability to outrun you and run over you
30:51Earl was quick enough where he would just avoid you
30:54and then he would continue on getting yardage
30:57and that's what made him great
30:59there were a lot of unbelievable
31:00a guy that, uh, bottom torso heavy
31:05should not be able to move his bottom torso like that
31:09we were playing in Mile High Stadium
31:11and it was third and long
31:13Earl pops through
31:14and Steve Fuller hitting right in the thigh
31:18delayed him just for a pause
31:21and then he just kept on moving
31:23Monday Night Football
31:25Texas Kid
31:26Bum Phillips
31:27Oiler fans
31:29there was just something really magical
31:30about that whole night
31:32Earl Campbell
31:33breaks the tackle at the 20, 25, 30, 35, 40
31:36at the 50, he makes up
31:39I remember one time we were playing the Rams in the Astrodome
31:41Isaiah Robertson was coming in to knock him down
31:44and finish him off type of thing
31:46and Earl headbutted Isaiah right in the chest
31:50and the next thing that hit the ground was the back of Isaiah's head
31:53and I'd known Butch as we called him for years
31:56I kind of looked down at him laying on the ground
31:58and said, what do you think about that, Butch?
32:00But the hardest hit that Earl Campbell ever dished out
32:04was in the Astrodome against the Oakland Raiders in 1979
32:08Jack Tatum got a running start
32:10hit him and then Jack went down
32:12he felt really good because he hit Earl hard
32:15the Earl had spun around over the goal line
32:18and Tatum said he looked around
32:20and there was Earl laying in the end zone smiling at him
32:25But on Super Bowl Sunday
32:27those power runners were runners up

33:05Riggett was a very tough, tough running back
33:08I mean he'd knock you around like a 10 pin in a bowling alley
