A six-month-old infant allegedly died after being administered expired medicine at a private hospital in Hyderabad, triggering unrest and vandalism at the facility.

The incident occurred on February 21 at Crayons Hospital in Bandlaguda Jagir. The infant, identified as Ramu, had been taken to the hospital by his parents for persistent fever. According to K. Raghavender, Sub-Inspector at Rajendranagar Police Station, the child had previously received treatment at the same hospital and had recovered.

The parents alleged that the infant was administered an Adrenaline Bitartrate injection that had expired on January 19, 2026. They produced photographs of a strip containing four vials, two of which were reportedly used. Medical experts stated that the injection is generally administered in critical emergencies to stimulate heart rate.

Hospital authorities, however, denied the allegation, stating that medicines administered during treatment are not handed over to attendants. Police said that multiple individuals had entered the hospital premises following the child’s death, making verification complex.

The infant, born several years after his two sisters, was declared dead despite emergency intervention. Following the announcement, a group of attendants and locals allegedly stormed the hospital, attacking staff including the Duty Medical Officer, nurses and supervisory personnel. Significant damage was reportedly caused to computers, an ultrasound machine, televisions and glass fixtures, disrupting medical services and creating panic among patients.

A written complaint has been filed by Dr. Abhishek M., Chief Pediatrician at the hospital. Allegations have also surfaced regarding police inaction during the violence.

An FIR has been registered against the treating doctor under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which pertains to causing death by rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide and carries a punishment of up to five years’ imprisonment and fine.

Police said the exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) reports. Further investigation is underway.
