00:04yesterday alex gora was talking about you being first in and you're here every morning bright
00:08and early so the boss you get gold stars with the boss for arriving arriving early what time
00:13you what time you get here uh well actually i got here a little later today but um you know
00:18usually try to get here pretty early knock the lift out um anywhere between 5 50 and 5 45 to
00:256 6 15 ish early bird gets the worm that's what they say um he was he was kind of
00:31given a little
00:31bit of credit from a leadership perspective to alex bregman when it came to that i don't know if you
00:37agree or not but saying that that guy kind of taught you guys the the youngs um kind of the
00:43the ways of the world yeah yeah for sure he was uh he was awesome you know obviously didn't get
00:48a ton
00:49of time with him but got to spend you know my first big league camp around him last year when
00:53when we
00:54signed him and then um got to spend that uh the period of time that i spent in the big
00:58leagues with
00:59him um obviously didn't get the full year but just the time that i was there with him and then
01:04for me
01:04coming up and and him being injured when i was there almost being like a hitting coach to me and
01:09and just
01:10uh being there for me you know with the hitting coaches and and uh constantly helping me out uh and
01:16then you know same thing when he was playing he was such a great leader um you know but not
01:21just him
01:21we have we have a lot of great guys that that uh you know veteran guys that lead the way
01:25you know
01:25trevor and and willie now and even jaron and rob last year there's so many guys you go down on
01:31the
01:31list and uh i think that's why we we mesh so well you know the young guys the veteran guys
01:36um
01:37we all help each other out we all get along so well and we just have fun together yeah jason
01:42veritek had said that that he had helped you on the he'd noticed something on the swing and it
01:47helped you on that uh yeah yeah yeah there was uh you know obviously for me like getting to the
01:51big leagues last year um you know that was that was my main goal you know starting in triple a
01:56and
01:56then when i got there you know learned fast that i had to adjust and had to you know do
02:01a few things
02:01in order to you know you know stay up there and have success and uh you know making a swing
02:06change
02:06was one of them needed to simplify a lot of things and uh got to a point where we had
02:10talked about a
02:11little bit and watched a lot of video with our staff and and with braggie uh in particular and
02:16then um during the philly series was when we just kind of hammered it out and worked on it in
02:20the cage
02:21and then had two pretty uh pretty bad games and we're just like you know what let's uh let's just
02:27simplify this thing as best as we can obviously it's in season so it's not the easiest thing to
02:32just change and face big league arms in season but uh at the same time um felt like it was
02:38a good
02:38time and felt like it was necessary uh you know with the time that we had you know with the
02:42remainder
02:43of the year in order to help this team down the stretch and and do what i can and uh
02:47ended up
02:48working out really well so for for those of us who aren't professional athletes and are hackers it's
02:54like trying to change your golf swing mid-round when you're gonna shoot 100 or something like that
02:58so yeah it's similar to me when i play golf uh except i do it every single round that i
03:04play golf i try
03:04to be a new golfer every single round yeah um yeah yeah yeah for uh for this it was a
03:10little
03:10bit different you know stayed with with just one change and have uh stayed pretty consistent with
03:15it unlike golf where i i change about every hole but um sunny gray was on here yesterday kind of
03:20bragging about his golf game have you played with him yet i have not but i've heard good things about
03:24him and uh you know with with pitchers they're usually always always pretty good golfers um a lot of
03:30time yeah they're just better uh usually than position players um and i've got nothing to brag
03:36about when it comes to my golf games wow you'll have time to work on that yeah yeah yeah not
03:42too
03:42worried about it right now roman you've been here long enough to know the passion that fans have not
03:48only for the the red socks but the patriots the celtics and when you have young players that are like
03:55yourself where the expectations are you know they're they're you're hold to a standard that's
04:01it looks like from the normal person like how does that person achieve that what's that like for you
04:06mentally to know that there's so much expectation that people put on and i know you probably put on
04:11yourself as a lot but to know like wow a franchise and a region really really is going to be
04:18watching
04:19every little thing that i do yeah i mean uh i think that's why we're blessed to be here and
04:25and
04:26you look around at fenway you know regardless of the record regardless of the score and it's it's
04:30tuesday night and it's sold out and the place is rocking you know 24 7 and then you go on
04:35the road and
04:36you go to different places and it could be a friday night on the weekend and and you know you
04:39look
04:40around there's no one there and it's dead and and uh so you realize how how passionate these fans are
04:45and how passionate the city is and and uh you know just all of new england in general with when
04:50it
04:51comes to sports and uh you know their teams and then for us in particular you know we're so grateful
04:56for the way that they show out every single night and the way that they support us and and hold
05:00us to
05:00a standard and at the same time you know we hold ourselves to a very high standard and you know
05:05we
05:05expect to go out there and and win every day and and you know anything short of a world series
05:10for us is
05:11is uh is a failure and and we know that in the clubhouse so at the same time you know
05:16we're
05:16obviously super grateful for it but we know that um you know we're not too worried about outside
05:21expectations when you know we already put a big expectation on ourselves um and then when we take
05:27the field you know it's just time to go it's time to do everything we can to help the team
05:29win um and
05:31that's the standard we're held to and that's the standard you know that we hold the each other to um
05:35and i think when you do that it kind of helps block out everything else but um at the same
05:40time you
05:41know like i mentioned it's you know we wouldn't want any other way we wouldn't want any other way
05:44and and um you know like i mentioned we we come out and and every single night they constantly show
05:49out for us and uh you know there's not a better place to play roman where would this humility sort
05:55of uh come from i i hear you were talking earlier about drake may and you and have similar traits
06:00of
06:00just two incredibly talented guys that are at the ground floor of what looks like a great career and
06:04you seem totally at ease totally calm no matter the situation no matter the question you don't brag you
06:10just talk and deflect what why are you that way and have you always had that sort of approach
06:16uh yeah i think it's just you know growing up the people around me and and uh especially now the
06:21people in this org the people around me here i learned you know quick uh when i was drafted um
06:26i think
06:27they do such a great job of teaching us you know how to be professionals at what we do and
06:31and you
06:32know you're in a big market um a lot of expectations a lot of media as as we mentioned um
06:36just a lot of
06:37different things that you know you got to learn quick and uh you know i think i had the right
06:42people around me and and uh ended up just kind of instilling that in into my myself and uh uh
06:49like
06:50just trying to be like guys like drake and and uh you know watching the veteran guys and watching
06:55guys who do it the right way every single day trevor story all these guys um and having those guys
07:00around you i think it helps helps you kind of um instill that into yourself and uh i think i've
07:05done a good
07:06job of that over the you know the past few years seems like your family is awesome we had your
07:10sister on the show yeah last year and she's great um and yeah you have like a hundred you had
07:16a hundred
07:16family members there uh for your debut or however many were there yeah yeah so yeah there was uh that
07:22was a busy week for sure it was uh it was nice to have everyone there at the same time
07:27though that
07:27that west coast trip was was nice to kind of just get away and take a deep breath and uh
07:31you know not
07:32have anyone there at the same time um and and uh but yeah they've they've supported me you know
07:37every step of the way and and uh you know it's awesome getting to kind of share this experience
07:42with them and and um you know just having them every step of the way what's been the craziest fan
07:47moment like whatever like a urinal uh where you like walk to the dog like has there been a crazy
07:51moment where a red sox fan has just popped out of nowhere and mass hold your morning something like
07:56that yeah i think um for me like going back home being back in in you know in jupiter florida
08:02and
08:03and you know during the off season more than anything it kind of just like catches me off
08:08guard sometimes i just forget you know that um you know you're roman anthony when i'm going when i'm
08:13going to uh to publix to get some dinner and to get some stuff to cook back in florida um
08:19you know that
08:20that people still approach you and and uh for me this off season was the first you know real
08:26experience of that um after you know being in the big leagues and and uh you know doing everything
08:32that i did and uh so i think this off season was a a big like whoa like this is
08:38the first time i'm
08:39realizing that you know there's a lot of of people who you know a lot of snowbirds up north people
08:44who
08:44come down and stay in florida and so for me like this off season just just the random things that
08:49i was
08:50doing that you know someone comes up to me or somebody has a jersey on of mine and at four
08:55o'clock in the afternoon at publix i think that was the biggest like wow um that's pretty cool i
09:02saw
09:02you and marcello at aloe in the seaport and i was gonna say hi but i was too intimidated
09:09you were shot you were in the uh in the mediums i was in the uh in the double x's
09:14they run they run
09:15big over there they run big over there no doubt you like you like boston you like you like living
09:23in the city yeah it's awesome i love it yeah i uh i lived in the seaport last year um
09:28you know
09:28lived actually with marcello uh but just every neighborhood i know your landlord in the seaport
09:34yeah and he told me that he told you guys when you were moving it did is what he said
09:39to you guys
09:39when you were moving in as a joke true wait what did he say i'm talking about michael was that
09:44yeah
09:45he said he told you guys no no no ladies in the apartment is that what he is that what
09:50he said
09:51no he was awesome he was funny he was packing up when he showed us the place yeah guys only
09:57i had that rule in collins unfortunately it was just because nobody can
10:03but it's a great i mean it's a great place to play baseball like a great city
10:06i think like the the uh from a fan perspective i everybody i talk to pitching's better um you know
10:14you got the best outfield in major league baseball alex core says that the only question i think with
10:19fans is is there enough offense and like and how do you feel about that yeah honestly um you know
10:26we've heard that a little bit in the close and we kind of joke about it because i think you
10:29know we
10:29have a very a lot more of a complete lineup than people think uh i think the additions that we
10:34added
10:35that you know were exactly what we needed um you know you talk about and guys like durbin um you
10:41know
10:41guys who just put the ball in play ikf um things like that uh to just help our lineup to
10:47be a more
10:47complete lineup put the ball in play more um you know with a little bit less i think that's that's
10:53going to be huge for us um and we got a great lineup down there we believe in ourselves um
10:57we know
10:58what we stand for and we know what we're trying to do every single day and then we know what
11:02the end
11:02goal is um ultimately so um again you know we're not too worried about what anyone thinks of our
11:08lineup we know what we got we know how uh you know how it's going to mesh together and and
11:12uh it's been
11:13fun to watch so far during the spring and just seeing how you know we we kind of mesh with
11:18each
11:18other um you know from one to nine so uh it's going to be an exciting lineup well you're promised
11:24wiggy 30 home runs yesterday yeah he did on the show yeah um what are you what are you uh
11:29what are
11:30you going to promise us uh not to put you on the spot or anything you know i haven't had
11:34a full
11:34season yet so um you know we will see if i'm healthy hopefully hopefully 30 as well okay all
11:41right all right well let me ask you this question roman as a frank would sign up for a public
11:44sub
11:45as a as a as a former professional athlete and have two boys that play college football at a high
11:51level what are the goals and expectations you set for yourself personally right what what are those
11:58look like or give us a little window into every day roman anthony wakes up and he has on his
12:04mirror
12:04my goal is to be one yeah i think uh for me i've never really put too many expectations on
12:10myself i
12:11don't really have an uh a notes page of what i need to do and and what i can't do
12:15um for me it's just
12:17you know especially now being at the big league level being here um it's pretty one simple goal
12:23you know is to win a world series but um for myself you know not really any expectations it's
12:28just coming here and and uh maximize every single day and um that's always been you know since i was
12:3318 i was drafted starting my first year my first spring training the goal for me was always just
12:37come into spring learn as much as i can from all the experience we have around us we're so you
12:42know
12:42blessed to have guys like david ortiz here dwight evans jim rice all these guys that you know are
12:47hanging around the clubhouse hang out with us in the outfield and in the cages like so for me it's
12:52just to learn as much as i can and and uh you know lean on these veteran guys as much
12:56as i can every
12:57single day in order to you know instill it into my game at a young age and and maybe you
13:02know do
13:02things that they weren't um you know they weren't aware of when they were my age and and when they
13:07were
13:07in my situation so and i think that's helped me the most you know more than anything more than just
13:11waking up and saying you know i gotta hit 30 home runs this year i gotta you know steal 20
13:15bases i
13:15gotta do this you know i don't think that's um anything that i've ever really done and and focus
13:20on for me it's just you know if i if i maximize every single day do everything i can um
13:25each and
13:25every day then i think everything will take care of itself we're about to have peyton toley on so how
13:30was his presentation on the united states of america yesterday it was unbelievable yeah i mean
13:35did you learn anything interesting yeah i learned a lot yeah learned about hollywood film that was my
13:40favorite part same but yeah he and i feel the same way yeah how do you feel about the moon
13:46landing
13:47i agree with whatever he says really okay all right we got a bunch of yeah he looks like a
13:53football
13:54player should agree with him yeah i'm a moon landing conspiracy theorist as well i cannot wait to get
13:59to that yeah yeah big stash were you inspired to shave usa into your chest or anything yeah i don't
14:05i don't
14:05get chest hair but if i did i would i would definitely do that but uh no i had i
14:10told him
14:10i had you know high expectations for him coming into it and and he exceeded it by far um which
14:16i
14:16didn't think was going to be very possible but you excited about the world baseball classic yeah yeah
14:21i can't wait i'm uh i'm super stoked obviously didn't didn't expect it coming into this um didn't
14:27really hear anything you know leading up to spring so for me it was just about coming in and having
14:32a
14:32great spring and and being here but um you know when i got the call and we decided you know
14:37as a
14:37group and and as a staff and a team that this was uh the right choice for me and to
14:42go get this
14:42experience um you know something that i've been you know wanting to do my entire life so can't wait
14:48well you see the the hockey guys u.s hockey guys win gold i'm sure like you look at that
14:53and go hey
14:53i'm playing for my for my country here yeah yeah obviously we we followed them along the way had
14:58it in the clubhouse um you know watching them you know leading up to that game and then watching
15:03that game obviously it was uh inspiring and and uh you know great to see them finally pull it off
15:09and
15:09uh yeah it's just you know reminded me that i have that experience similar experience um you know
15:15coming up you know just don't laugh at any of the women's softball yeah that's correct
15:24robin last year you signed an extension you know you're quickly to the big league club you're the
15:28number one prospect in baseball from your perspective why was that something you were
15:31interested in and what made that how did that come together yeah honestly it was nothing something i
15:36never really um thought too deeply about wasn't you know coming in every every spring or that spring
15:43in particular trying to you know sign a deal that's not really a thought you have as much as a
15:48player especially me as a young guy um so you know coming into it you know i had the talks
15:53obviously
15:53was was super excited to just be in those talks and uh you know those things can take a while
15:59and
16:00then it can be a lot of a lot of no's and and um you know so it was a
16:05long process for sure but um
16:07at the same time you know you get to a point where uh for me you know um after playing
16:13in the big
16:13leagues and playing in boston and like i mentioned earlier going uh on these different road cities
16:18and seeing you know how spoiled we are um it didn't take a lot for me to realize that you
16:24know
16:24this is where i want to be and and um i want to win here and win for this this
16:28city in particular so
16:30um you know a lot of people can say what they want about you know the deal or whatever it
16:36is um but
16:37for me it was it was a number that you know it was a no-brainer for me and for
16:41my family and um
16:42for where we wanted to be um so it was it was pretty simple you think you might want to
16:47play
16:47your whole career here absolutely yeah i mean obviously haven't haven't played anywhere else
16:52was drafted here um so that'd be the dream would just to you know be in be in one spot
16:57be lucky
16:57enough to you know be in one spot your whole career i think a lot of guys would love to
17:01do that
17:01so for me um you know it'd be it'd be an awesome place to play um you know my entire
17:06career and
17:07and hopefully that's what happens we would love it too so thanks thanks for taking thanks for taking
