00:00All right, so a quick trade here.
00:01Let's get to this.
00:03And it looks like Robert Sala is trying to pick a player off his old team.
00:07It would appear to me, Adam, beyond anything else.
00:09Jets, Titans make a trade.
00:12So break this one down, how sort of something like this comes to fruition.
00:16Yeah, here's what I'm told by a league source.
00:17So you're right, Mitch and Sala, obviously.
00:20He coached Jermaine Johnson.
00:21Jermaine Johnson played his best football for Robert Sala.
00:24Now, here's the problem with Johnson and the Jets.
00:28They changed their defensive scheme last season.
00:30Aaron Glenn came in.
00:31They ran a 34.
00:33They're running a 34.
00:34And Glenn, by the way, is going to call plays this season.
00:37And Johnson was not drafted by Darren Mugey, the new general manager.
00:42I say new.
00:42Last year was his first season.
00:44And they were not, as I understand it, going to extend Johnson's contract.
00:48He's making over $13 million this season.
00:49It's his fifth year.
00:51So Robert Sala, and I could tell you if I'm talking to the Titans over the last
00:54two years, their pass rush was anemic.
00:56They just don't have, next to no talent is pass rushers.
01:00They're changing their front.
01:02They're changing to what's called a wide nine, where it's a 43 front.
01:05The ends play.
01:06They get upfield.
01:08That's their job.
01:09And that's what Jermaine Johnson does really, really well.
01:10And also told by JetSource, one of the things they loved about Johnson early in
01:14his career, like he came in, he grew up a little bit, and then he became a leader.
01:18He became a father.
01:19And he became actually a leader for them.
01:20And they loved his maturity and how he kind of changed himself a little bit.
01:24And he became a good player.
01:25But they were not going to extend his contract.
01:27Now, what did they get in return?
01:29A very talented third-year defensive tackle in Tavondre Sweat.
01:33Sweat was drafted by a former general manager.
01:37Notice the theme here.
01:39He was drafted by Rand Carthon, the then general manager two years ago.
01:44And Sweat, who was a second rounder, is a good player.
01:47But, again, the Titans are changing their scheme.
01:50They're going to a 43 front, wide nine.
01:52He doesn't fit it as well.
01:54So, he's going to play for Aaron Glenn.
01:55And remember, the Jets traded Quinn and Williams.
01:59That was quite the shocker last season.
02:00So, you put this all together, it makes a lot of sense.
02:02Now, Sweat's on a rookie.
02:04He's only on his third year.
02:05He's going to make well less than $2 million.
02:07Johnson's going to make a ton of money.
02:09I mean, over $13 million.
02:11And that's really the difference is the cash.
02:13But, overall, both teams get what they want here.
02:16It's just an odd trade because you typically don't see two bad teams make a trade with each other.
02:22But you understand just the dynamics between it because when you change your schemes, man, that changes a lot.
