00:01The coronial inquest into Jeremy Webb's death has become a landmark test case for Australian
00:07researchers and allergists. The 16-year-old boy died while on a camping trip with three
00:13mates at McMaster's Beach in June 2022. The boys had just cooked beef sausages for dinner over a
00:19campfire but just hours later Jeremy collapsed and started having trouble breathing. His young
00:24friends tried to revive him but he soon died in hospital. Now an autopsy report determined that
00:31Jeremy had died from asthma initially but his parents spent years lobbying for this coronial
00:37inquest believing that he might have died of mammalian meat allergy. His parents have told
00:42me that from the age of about two their son started repeatedly being bitten by ticks and would frequently
00:48react to eating red meat. They'd taken him to hospital before but they were never told that
00:54this allergy had life-threatening consequences. Speaking to me outside of court today they
01:00both said that they're elated to receive further answers into just how their son died. They
01:05also said they're remaining optimistic to see how the Central Coast Local Health District takes
01:10on recommendations by the Deputy State Coroner to help increase education and awareness around
01:16mammalian meat allergy along the Central Coast.
01:18This is now going to go into the records, the database which will pick up, allow more cases
01:28like this to be picked up which is exactly what we wanted. During his life Jeremy made a positive
01:37impact on the lives of his friends, family and also strangers and now thanks to every individual
01:44involved in this inquest Jeremy continues to make a positive impact saving lives into the future so
01:52yeah he's yeah he made a difference when he was was alive and now he's still continuing to make a
01:59difference when he's passed. According to the CSIRO Australia has the largest rate of mammalian meat
02:07allergy in the world. Sydney's Northern Beaches is the primary hotspot for the diagnosis with 744 people
02:14per every 100,000 residents living with the allergy.
