00:00Work to transform Newcastle's Granger Market is entering its final stages, with Newcastle
00:06City Council confirming the £9 million scheme remains on schedule for completion in March.
00:12The City Centre landmark has been undergoing extensive upgrades, funded through the Government's
00:18Leveling Up Fund. Improvements include new flooring, customer toilets, seating, signage
00:24and sliding doors at each entrance. Fresh tiling and external paving have also been installed.
00:31In the Arcade section, two new pavilions have been constructed, although parts of that redesign
00:36remain screened from public view ahead of a formal unveiling. A new pavilion structure
00:42is now visible at the Nelson Street end, while at the Nunn Street entrance a staircase is
00:48being built to provide access to a previously inaccessible upper level. The Council says
00:54the wider redesign will create a more open space capable of hosting cultural events, including
00:59performances and fashion shows. The project follows earlier restoration of the market's
01:05barrelled glass roof, a separate program that experienced delays before completion. A Council
01:12spokesperson says the improvements are intended to secure the market's long-term future while
01:17preserving its historic character, and has thanked traders and customers for their patience
01:22during the works. The authority says final checks and preparations are now underway before handover.
