A newly built pavilion inside Newcastle’s historic Grainger Market is still not open to shoppers despite a completed refurbishment. The council says final preparations are under way, with access expected in place by early May.

00:00A newly built pavilion at the heart of Newcastle's Granger Market redevelopment remains closed to the public, despite the wider
00:07refurbishment being officially completed and unveiled in March.
00:11The structure, at the Nunn Street end of the arcade, was designed to create a flexible space for seating, events
00:19and views across the historic market, but access is currently restricted by barriers at the base of the staircase.
00:26Visitors are also unable to enter a second upper-level area at the Nelson Street side, where doors remain locked,
00:33and additional seating introduced during the unveiling has not yet been put back into place.
00:39Newcastle City Council says the overall project, funded through the Leveling Up Fund, has reached a major milestone, with improvements
00:47including new entrances, signage and facilities across the 190-year-old site.
00:52The authority says final operational planning is now well advanced, with a management approach being prepared to ensure the space
01:01is safe, clean and welcoming.
01:03It adds that seating and barriers will be installed and removed respectively once these arrangements are complete, with full access
01:11expected in time for the Late Shows event scheduled for early May.
01:15Granger Market itself is 190 years old, making it one of the oldest surviving covered Victorian markets.
01:24The Grade 1 listed building originally opened back in 1835.
