00:00Major redevelopment work is currently underway at Newcastle's Granger Market as part of a £9 million refurbishment.
00:09The project aims to transform the Grade 1 listed building into a destination comparable with leading indoor markets across Europe.
00:18This comes according to Newcastle City Council.
00:21The work includes a new upstairs pavilion along with new flooring, toilets, doors and seating, allowing the market to host events such as gigs and theatre performances.
00:34The scheme was originally scheduled for completion last summer but is now expected to finish early this year.
00:41The council has released images showing progress on the new pavilion and an upstairs seating area at the Nelson Street end of the market arcade.
00:52A staircase is also being installed opposite to provide access to a previously inaccessible upper level, the local Democracy Reporting Service has said.
01:02New hand-painted signs are also being added to improve navigation, alongside ceramic tiles indicating which street visitors are exiting onto.
01:12Sliding glass doors are being fitted at entrances to address long-standing complaints about cold conditions during the winter months.
01:21Funding for the project was awarded through the government's levelling up fund in 2021.
