A case of molestation and racial harassment involving a female resident doctor has come to light in Gorakhpur. The incident occurred around 8 pm on February 22 when the doctor, a third-year Obstetrics and Gynaecology resident at AIIMS Gorakhpur, was returning from Orion Mall.

According to the complaint, three men allegedly stalked the doctor, who hails from Nagaland, for nearly 1.5 kilometres from the mall to Gate No. 2 of AIIMS. They reportedly made lewd comments and racial slurs targeting her northeastern background. One of the accused allegedly removed his shirt to intimidate her.

Near the Army camp close to Gate No. 2, one of the men allegedly inappropriately touched her. The accused fled after the doctor raised an alarm. The incident left her deeply shaken and traumatised.

The matter was reported to the North East Federation of All India Resident Doctors (NAFORD), which strongly condemned the incident. NAFORD stated that the doctor was subjected to severe racial harassment and sexual assault. The organisation wrote to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, demanding immediate action. It urged the police to promptly register an FIR, examine CCTV footage from Orion Mall and nearby areas, identify and arrest the accused, and ensure security for female doctors and professionals from the Northeast in medical institutions.

NAFORD President Dr Devesh Dubey said the matter had been escalated and that appropriate representation would be made to the Chief Minister’s Office, the Additional Director General (Law and Order), and the Director of AIIMS.

Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Kaustubh confirmed that an FIR had been registered at the AIIMS police station under relevant sections based on the doctor’s complaint. He said CCTV footage had helped identify a motorcycle linked to the accused.

Police have arrested two accused — Suraj Gupta, a resident of Uma Nagar under Kotwali police station area in Deoria, and Amrit Vishwakarma, a resident of Ramnath North in Deoria. A third accused remains absconding, and raids are underway to apprehend him.

Further investigation is in progress.
