00:00Pretend you're a donkey if you love the costas.
00:03Hey, aw, we love the beach.
00:06Oi, oi, better done, we love ya.
00:09Oi, oi, Kerry and Nicola, we really do.
00:12And with over 300 days of that glorious sunshine a year,
00:16it sure beats the cold and grey of the old UK.
00:19Ah, this is a lie.
00:21Living that dream can be blooming hard graft.
00:24Missed him.
00:25My last, you're right.
00:26Stress level.
00:27Through the roof.
00:29But at the end of the working day...
00:31Girl power.
00:32Girl power.
00:33Come on, Sam.
00:34Forward.
00:34Booyah.
00:35The quality of life on the costas...
00:40Is priceless.
00:43Peace and love.
00:44Cheers.
00:45That's why there will always be...
00:47I don't like weather, Sam.
00:48Get us in blazes where it shouldn't get.
00:49Quick, someone talk about the weather.
00:51The weather.
00:52Phew.
00:52It's friendly, it's exciting.
00:54It's just like a second home.
00:56Bargain, living Brits, in the sun.
00:57Yeah.
01:00Today on the costas...
01:02Where's all the Gaga fans?
01:05Hot performer Paige needs to impress bar manager Yvonne to land some new gig.
01:09We're expecting a lot from Paige tonight.
01:12She's going to deliver the goods.
01:13But is she flying blind?
01:16Glasses I absolutely love.
01:17Can't see in them.
01:18How silly do I look now?
01:20Sally's celebrating the best of British at a brand new event.
01:24Now we're really just hoping that we get people through the door.
01:28Two roast chicken.
01:30And we've a second serving of Dave and Sue as their roast dinner sales take a tumble.
01:35It would be heartbreaking if we had to give it up.
01:45Okay, so in here is where I keep all my wigs.
01:49In Alfaro...
01:50I tend to keep my costumes in here and anything to do with music.
01:54Costa del Sol singer Paige is gearing up for what could be a career-defining performance.
01:59This is where I make my backing tracks, recording equipment here.
02:04Paige has put in the hours to make a name for herself.
02:07To get where I've got myself to now, it was difficult.
02:12But tonight she's been offered her first performance slot as a renowned costa's venue.
02:18Today is my debut at Legends in La Cala, which is a tribute show bar.
02:23And some of the best tribute acts on the coast are there.
02:26So it's important that it goes well for me.
02:28So Paige is hoping to wow tonight's crowds with her recently launched tribute to a pop diva.
02:35It's my new pet.
02:37When I first started singing, it was in my head that I wanted to do a Lady Gaga tribute.
02:42But the self-doubt, the unconfident me, talked myself out of it.
02:48And I kept putting it off and off and off and off and off.
02:50Last year I decided that this was the year.
02:53So this is my new wig for the Lady Gaga show.
02:57It's the first time I will be wearing it tonight.
03:00It is quite a heavy set for my voice.
03:03But I absolutely love singing those songs and the emotions that's behind them.
03:07So we're going to the hairdressers to get the wig fringe trimmed.
03:13It just sits on the eyelashes, which is quite uncomfortable.
03:16So I'm hoping that to trim it a little bit shorter will stop that from happening.
03:21Got my cuppa, my wig.
03:22Let's go.
03:24Finding her feet and the confidence to follow her dream hasn't always been easy.
03:29I was working for a friend in a little bar in Lacalla and he heard me singing behind the bar.
03:36And every time I came out to give the customers drinks, he would say, put money in a charity pot
03:42and let's hear the waitress sing.
03:44And then it just snowballed from there.
03:46I just started getting myself gigs and working through the sick feeling of no confidence.
03:55To pull off the perfect performance tonight, Paige needs every detail to be right.
04:00Hey!
04:01How are you?
04:02You good?
04:03Yeah, you're good.
04:04Right.
04:06Let's get this wig trimmed.
04:08So that means no dodgy fringes.
04:10It's a very important night.
04:12I would like to get more regular gigs there, so, yeah, it all depends on tonight.
04:17Oh, wow!
04:19It's cool, isn't it?
04:26Well, it's a good thing for the expats.
04:29There's a thriving community of British expats on the costas.
04:32We love Spain!
04:35And if you fancy meeting up with some fellow Brits...
04:38It brings people together.
04:40We help each other.
04:41There's always plenty going on.
04:43It's a way of making friends as well and getting to know the different people that live in the area.
04:52Welcome to our home.
04:54And at the heart of the expat social scene in Estepona...
04:58We have a great time here out partying and, yeah, soaking up the sun and splashing about in the pool.
05:04His former driving instructor, Sally.
05:07We've been dine in the evening here, watching the views.
05:10It's fabulous.
05:11And her partner, Richard.
05:13Hello.
05:15My other half.
05:16Not the better half, the other half, yeah.
05:19I'm Sally.
05:21I'm originally from Scotland.
05:23So we've been living in Spain about two to three years now, full time.
05:27We've just had a new kitchen fitted, so that's why this is another one of our favourite areas to enjoy.
05:33We've been coming to this area for many, many years.
05:36It just seemed a natural progression to select here to actually come and buy a property to spend our retirement.
05:42I really like the new hub, bizarrely.
05:46It's toys, isn't it?
05:47It's a new toy.
05:48What we love about Spain, yeah, the weather is obviously a big factor.
05:53The area, the people, and the lifestyle it gives you and offers you, yeah.
05:59The couple have been together for 27 years.
06:02Sally and I, much at work, we both worked in the same company.
06:05We were both IT specialists at the time.
06:07I can't find a pair.
06:10Sally helps to run the town's Foreign Residents Group.
06:14It's a small association put in place which works along with the town hall to assist people in the integration
06:22into the lifestyle in Spain.
06:24So if anyone has issues, we've got various contacts where we can assist them and, yeah, try and move things
06:29forward for them.
06:31But it's not all admin and assistants.
06:33This lot love to celebrate all things blighty.
06:36Today we've got our British Day, which is something new for us.
06:40The town hall has been dealing with many associations and having various days.
06:47So, yeah, they decided also British Day would be a good one to add to the list.
06:51So they approached our association.
06:54The themed events for other countries went down well.
06:57So now the pressure's on today to deliver the very best of British.
07:01I'm going to go downstairs and get that pump and take the extension as well.
07:05Yeah, it's trying to share our sort of British ways, if you like.
07:10Everything we're trying to select is British.
07:13We need to blow a few more balloons up.
07:15And I did about 100 balloons yesterday.
07:19Just me.
07:20And I think I've got latex poisoning on me lips.
07:24We have various performers performing throughout the day to entertain the public.
07:31We have a variety of different stalls there as well, displaying their wares.
07:35I'll be performing in the choir as well.
07:38Just thinking about the stuff that we need to remember.
07:40You've got your choir uniform.
07:42Don't forget my choir stuff.
07:44As it's their first ever British Day, it could end up as popular as scones and cream or flop like
07:50a wet weekend in Wigan.
07:52Now we're really just anxious and hoping that we get people through the door and just not knowing how many
07:59people are likely to come.
08:00It's all a bit of the unknown.
08:02It's the first year we've run this event.
08:04I think we're in quite a bit of anxiety about what's going on today and everything.
08:10Turn around in your head to make sure you've done everything.
08:13There's a lot of moving parts that all have to come together today.
08:17I'm ready, I'm ready.
08:19Have you got the car keys, yeah?
08:21I've got the car keys, yes.
08:23Good.
08:28I just hope everyone turns up today.
08:31We've got a good footfall.
08:34Yeah.
08:36It'll be great to see it all come together after quite a wee bit of plannings.
08:41It's going to be a long day though.
08:42It certainly is.
08:46Coming up.
08:47It's just, it's sitting on my eyes.
08:50It's fringe benefits for Paige.
08:53We're going to give it a nice trim.
08:54Come into the rather large haul.
08:56Oh, in the dark, okay.
08:58And Sally's British day gets off to a bad start.
09:01Slight problem, no light.
09:12When us Brits come to the costas, it's fair to say we don't want to be cold.
09:17You've got sunshine 365 days a year.
09:20We come like milk bottles, they go in the back like lobsters.
09:22But being Brits, we like it warm, but not that warm.
09:26Sweating all the time.
09:28One of the best ways to curl dine is running into the safe.
09:32Put your T-shirt in my freezer.
09:36Ivor, you're a genius, but working in the Spanish heat can have you sweating buckets.
09:41Sweating, yeah.
09:42Sweating and I've not done any work yet.
09:44It's really, really hot and really, really hard work.
09:46And there are few places hotter than a kitchen.
09:50Bloody hell.
09:53Tom's working.
09:56Sue and Dave have been serving up British grub to the folk of Fwangirola since 2017.
10:01We're not here to be millionaires.
10:02As long as we can afford to put food on the table, pay the rent, we're happy bunnies.
10:07And one particular day of the week has them roasting in the kitchen.
10:11Ah-ha, sunday roasts.
10:14Sunday roasts.
10:15It's always good.
10:16People say it's like being at home, don't they?
10:18The younger ones will say, oh, it's like my mum used to cook when we used to go round to
10:21my nan's.
10:22We want to offer quality food.
10:24But when we first met them in 2020, they were struggling to make ends meet.
10:29Business isn't what it should be, let's put it that way.
10:32During normal circumstances, we'd be making at least 35, 40 roasts.
10:39If we do more than 12, that's OK.
10:42It makes it worth doing more than 15, even better if we can get it plus 15, 18 on.
10:48Then that'll be a good Sunday at the minute.
10:49And we wait.
10:51Morning, guys!
10:53Dave and Sue rent a flat in Fwangirola for them and their youngest son, 13-year-old Jamie.
10:59Got two lovely lads and a beautiful wife, as you can see.
11:04We met over 30 years ago.
11:08I've been married for 22 years.
11:11It's like you're on holiday all the time.
11:13When you're not working.
11:14Even though you work hard.
11:15You work flipping hard.
11:16It's not easy.
11:18And keeping their dream life in the sun requires hard graft and happy customers.
11:23Two roast chicken.
11:25Lily's first.
11:27Love the food, yeah.
11:28I would say it's better than the ice cooking, but we're not saying that, aren't I?
11:31So, it was good.
11:33Very good.
11:33Well, obviously, homemade Yorkshire putts makes all the difference.
11:37I don't know if it's a bit too hot, though, but I'll give it a go.
11:41But with just nine dinners sold today...
11:44Two roast chicken.
11:45...the numbers are not what Dave and Sue were hoping for.
11:49Disappointing?
11:50Disappointing.
11:50Probably the worst.
11:51I'd say that's probably the worst Sunday we've had for a long, long time.
11:55Maybe ever.
11:56To stay in Spain, they need to get their business and domestic finances in shape.
12:00We've put so much work into it.
12:02We've put our hearts into it.
12:03And we've put a lot of hours, a lot of hours into it.
12:07Thanks, guys.
12:08We will see you soon.
12:09So, yeah, it would be heartbreaking if we had to give it up.
12:12It would be.
12:13It would.
12:14To pay for the bar and the apartment, realistically, you want $1,500 a week turnover.
12:22A lot of that for us did come on the Sundays.
12:25If I have to use pension, then use it, you know, because this is our life now.
12:32Oh, dear.
12:33This is a bit rubbish for a Sunday, isn't it?
12:36If it carries on like this, it will be disaster, really.
12:43It just sits on my...
12:46..on my eyes.
12:47Yeah.
12:47In Calahonda, Tribute Act Paige has a busy day of prep ahead
12:51of tonight's make-or-break gig.
12:53Obviously, I love it.
12:54She does have it a little bit in her eyes, but doesn't she?
12:56Yeah, but I've got eyelashes on her.
12:59Lady Gaga, I think, is the best pop artist of our time.
13:03And it is hard to sing her songs.
13:06If you have it there, it's going to flick.
13:09When I was a child with the singing, I just always remember being in my bedroom
13:13and envisioning myself on stage,
13:15but it was never something that I thought was even possible.
13:19I'm going to take a little bit, chop into it, see how it sits,
13:22and then see if we can take some more.
13:23Yeah.
13:24Yeah, the professional.
13:26We're going to give it a nice trim.
13:28LAUGHTER
13:29It's good, though, isn't it?
13:30Yeah, it won't grow back, though, so we've got to be a bit careful.
13:32Yeah.
13:34People used to say I could sing,
13:36and then as soon as I knew someone was listening,
13:38I couldn't do it anymore.
13:39It's just, it's sitting on my eyes,
13:41so once I have the eyelashes, they're just way too heavy.
13:46You're on through.
13:47So with the Lady Gaga,
13:49it's sort of taking me back to that inner child
13:52who never believed in herself and never had the confidence.
13:55Easy does it, Charlotte.
14:03Right, have a look in the mirror.
14:06A little bit more.
14:07A little bit more because of the eyelashes.
14:10That's definitely better.
14:14I'm nearly there.
14:22Oh, yeah, that's perfect.
14:26And she's back.
14:29Ah, that's one less thing to worry about tonight
14:31in the actual performance.
14:32Thank you very much.
14:34It was nice and quick,
14:35which is what we need today,
14:37because we're on a tight schedule.
14:38And hopefully see you tonight.
14:39Good luck.
14:40Yeah, I'm really excited now.
14:41See you later.
14:42Bye.
14:44A small trim makes a big difference.
14:48So we are heading back home to my house.
14:52Avalyn is on her way to drop my costume off.
14:57With Paige's crucial gig now just hours away...
15:03That's a good, quick and effective vocal warm-up.
15:08Even travel time needs to be put to good use.
15:14You can feel it here just vibrating on the vocal cords.
15:21Right, let's go.
15:24Let's see, let's see.
15:25I fixed your old part.
15:27Yeah.
15:28Cool.
15:28And then I've done what I think would look better.
15:32Yeah, if you show...
15:33It's a new bra top.
15:35Oh, my God, yes.
15:37So it's the replica costume of the poker face video
15:41that Lady Gaga did.
15:43And she's just made a few little adjustments.
15:46And then you've got your glasses.
15:48Yeah, they're so cool.
15:50Yeah, they're cool.
15:51You can't see through them very well.
15:53I can definitely see.
15:55I might wear these the whole way through now.
15:58Glasses have exceeded my expectations.
16:00It's exactly what I had in my mind.
16:02That's bound to help Paige get into character
16:05and settle at any stage news.
16:07Have a good day.
16:07Thank you so much.
16:08Yeah, I'll send you pictures as well.
16:09Yes, please do.
16:10Yeah, sit.
16:13Good boy, Scruff.
16:16To grow, you have to push yourself.
16:18But as the day goes on, I'm going to get more and more nervous.
16:31It shows our happiness, really, doesn't it?
16:38My favourite photo was taken when we went out with some friends
16:43and then they surprised us with it in a frame
16:47at our birthday party last year.
16:53It brings back memories of finding real, real happiness.
16:58Finally, in my later years.
17:06We are now living a very, very happy life in Spain.
17:10So, when I look at that photograph,
17:13I think how lovely it is for both of us, really.
17:18In Fungirola, Dave and Sue have made a major decision.
17:23All exciting.
17:24Can't believe we're going to buy a house.
17:24Oh, yeah, yeah, I know.
17:26Despite a drop in trade at their cafe,
17:28they now want to buy a house instead of renting.
17:32The point of buying a house is that we're going to save.
17:35So, we still want to go ahead with getting a house
17:38and that will help us stay here.
17:41Put our roots down because we've no intention of going back to the UK.
17:44We love it so much here.
17:45So, it's go big or go home.
17:47Let's hope they can pull this off.
17:50It's a beautiful day to go house hunting.
17:54Hopefully.
17:54It's a new day and Dave and Sue,
17:57along with their youngest son, Jamie,
17:59have two properties to view.
18:00If we buy a house, we will save about €300 a month
18:05than we're paying rent at the moment.
18:07And the first is £10,000 under their £90,000 budget.
18:12€80,000.
18:13It has one, two, three floors, plus the terrace upstairs.
18:17After you.
18:19Dark and small, but we need to save the rest.
18:22So, we're keeping a life in mind.
18:25We'll need some work.
18:28And here you have one bathroom.
18:31It's not so bad, the kitchen.
18:33The bathroom's worse.
18:34Anything to recommend upstairs?
18:36You can make here a big bedroom
18:38and make the bathroom here.
18:41Since this is a bit smaller,
18:43just make a big bedroom here.
18:45I think this is what you call a do-er-upper.
18:48I think it's £80,000, this one,
18:49which is pretty good for the size of it.
18:52It needs a bit of TLC, shall we say.
18:56And that will take money.
18:58You get a lot for your money.
19:00You get a hell of a lot for your money.
19:01But it obviously needs a lot of work, so that is...
19:04That's what we've got to keep in mind.
19:05Let's hope the next one has more potential.
19:08OK, so shall we go inside and see it?
19:10Yes, please.
19:10Yes.
19:11It's £15,000 more, but it's in better, Nick.
19:15That's a nice big room, isn't it?
19:17Here we have the living room.
19:21OK.
19:22Yeah, it's a lot lighter.
19:24I will see.
19:25And here you have a bathroom, a big one.
19:28Oh, yeah.
19:29I like this.
19:31It's nice.
19:32It's big.
19:33It's long.
19:34It's nice.
19:35I like this.
19:35I love it.
19:36I like it.
19:38Yeah, I can live here.
19:40James.
19:41And it comes with a friendly housemate.
19:43It's a good idea.
19:44Just like Gnome.
19:45Yeah.
19:47More like Gnome's sweet Gnome, I do the jokes around here.
19:53I think we may have struck gold.
19:55I really do.
19:55On the first.
19:56Yes, I do.
19:58Let's look like it.
19:59Love it.
20:00I think it's nice.
20:01I like it.
20:01I really like it.
20:03I could too.
20:04I could live here.
20:06Yeah.
20:07Yeah, definitely.
20:08But at £5,000 over budget, it's a stretch.
20:11So it's the top end of what we can afford.
20:14We'll see whether they're open to an offer.
20:16Yeah, but I think...
20:18And then see where we go from here.
20:25The sun's coming out.
20:27Ooh.
20:27In Estepona, retired driving instructor Sally is organising one of her biggest ever events.
20:33Exciting.
20:34Come into the rather large hall.
20:37Oh, in the dark.
20:38Okay.
20:38Not a great start.
20:39No, it's definitely dark.
20:40That's a problem.
20:41Slight problem.
20:42No light.
20:46Okay.
20:48There'll be a guy.
20:49There'll be a guy comes in, I'm sure.
20:50Sadly, Sally's partner, Richard, is a retired IT specialist and not an electrician.
20:55I'm not going to knock them off with a switch on it.
20:59You've got to love the way that we'll just randomly dive into a massive big board of electrical
21:03equipment and then just start flicking switches just to see something happen.
21:07Ooh, we have light.
21:10We have light.
21:11Woo-hoo.
21:14So, as you can see, we've got our stage down at the end here for all our performers later
21:19today.
21:20And then all around the edge, it's all our stalls.
21:24British Day is a new event this year.
21:26If it all goes to plan, we're all going to be delighted.
21:30I really don't think we expected it to be quite as big when we first got asked to do it.
21:35I think we kind of thought, yeah, we knew roughly the size of the Palacio, but really
21:40thought they have the option to partition it across, and that's really what we thought
21:44we were going to be doing.
21:45Maybe about half of this.
21:47Every time Sally gets a task to do, she always does it full on.
21:52She always gets her teeth into it.
21:55There's no half measures with her.
21:56I'm quite proud to watch her do it all.
22:00Right, best are going.
22:02See who's coming in, check where people are going and sort things out.
22:07I'm a roving support.
22:11There's a lot of balls being juggled at the same time to get everybody together at this
22:16one point.
22:17And I'll be there to the end and I'll give any help that I need during the day.
22:21More balloons are needed.
22:23Handily, roving support Richard is on the case.
22:27This is, hopefully, the pump that will help me pump the balloons up.
22:36He's got the perfect tool to prevent those latex lip problems.
22:42No, it's all that pressure behind it.
22:51Or maybe not.
22:52I'm heart-breaking for you.
22:54At the moment, priority's still just yet.
22:56Just setting up, getting people in, making sure they're in the right place.
22:59I just want to put all the names on for you because some of the names are missing.
23:05And balloons.
23:07Blowing balloons.
23:08So, yeah, I think I shall go and start assisting with that.
23:12Help blowing balloons.
23:13Not that I'm very good at it, I must confess.
23:15Rubbish, actually.
23:16Right, I'll go and blow balloons.
23:19Keep talking, brother.
23:21Talk and blow.
23:22I know he's good, but he's not that good.
23:24Don't get deflated, Richard.
23:26Only 80 more balloons to go.
23:28Oh, dear.
23:33Coming up.
23:34Can we offer 87,000?
23:37Dave and Sue upped the ante in their search for a new home.
23:41Fingers crossed, eh?
23:42Oh, it needs to be bigger than that, actually.
23:44And Sally and Richard race to get their best of British day off the ground.
23:49It's all completely under control.
23:52Ha-ha!
24:00Back in Fuengirola...
24:02Can we offer 87,000?
24:05Dave and Sue have decided to put in a cheeky offer on the house.
24:09Eight grand under the asking price.
24:13Fingers crossed, eh?
24:14Offer's gone in.
24:18There we go, folks.
24:19Too cold, son, we go.
24:22It's out of their hands now.
24:24Are the kids looking forward to it?
24:26Yeah.
24:27So the couple are trying to keep busy while they wait for news.
24:31We're hanging in there.
24:32Dave and Sue got their resident permit when they bought the business three years ago.
24:37I'm going to have a chicken mat, please.
24:38But having a home would make their Spanish stream complete.
24:45This could be news.
24:47Oh, telephone.
24:49Hello.
24:53OK.
24:56OK.
24:58OK.
24:59What did they say, Sue?
25:00They've already reduced it from 99 to 95, so they're not prepared to go as low as 87.
25:07OK.
25:07But she said she's spoken to them.
25:09She said they'll take 91.
25:11OK.
25:12We'll have a check in a minute.
25:14Yes, full concentration needed for wrapping, Dave.
25:20OK.
25:21Anything we need?
25:22Hello.
25:23Hello.
25:2591.
25:25Yeah.
25:26Doesn't sound...
25:27That don't sound too bad, does it?
25:28Doesn't sound too bad, really.
25:29So who's 97 to start off with?
25:3199.
25:3299.
25:34It's still a bargain.
25:36Still a bargain.
25:38We're going to say...
25:39Give her a ring back, say yes.
25:40We're going to say yes?
25:41Yeah.
25:42Never sex-cited.
25:44Like going on a first date.
25:46No.
25:48You can't remember.
25:50It's too long ago.
25:51Back to negotiations.
25:53Hi, it's David again, Suzanne's husband.
25:57So...
25:57Yeah.
25:58We'll accept 91,000.
25:59We'll go for that.
26:01Congratulations.
26:02You have a help.
26:03Nadia, that's great.
26:05Hey!
26:07Hey!
26:09Hey!
26:10Hey!
26:10There you go.
26:11We've done it.
26:35We've got the house, guys.
26:37We ain't going nowhere.
26:42Big tips, please, because...
26:45Well, that's one way of paying for it.
26:47Let's hope those Sunday roasts start picking up.
26:53I'd like to move to Spain because of the weather.
26:56Put it in a different frame of mind.
26:58Spain has long been a favourite for Brits looking to retire in the sun.
27:02If we were given the choice and we could lock up, leave everything safely at home,
27:06our kids are grown and everything like that,
27:08we wouldn't question twice moving over here to Spain.
27:10We love it.
27:11I've got a few years to go before I reach retirement,
27:13but I would never say never.
27:16Of course, you as viewers say to yourself,
27:19he's not at retirement age.
27:21But as that happens, I'm not.
27:22But, yes, I think that would be a great way
27:26to see the rest of my life through.
27:29The people that we've met that have retired here
27:31and there are quite a lot of them,
27:33they seem to form a network.
27:35They do.
27:35So everyone knows everybody else.
27:43Oh, it needs to be bigger than that, Julie.
27:46And one person who really does know everyone else is Sally.
27:51Ooh, nice artwork going out there.
27:53She's hoping her British day in Estepona
27:56will help bring the town's expat community together.
27:59This event has certainly kept us busy
28:01and kept us all on our toes.
28:03So, yeah, we're just hoping it all goes smoothly.
28:06It's for the other ones.
28:08Well, just go through yours
28:09and just tell me who you've got from the start.
28:11Watch it, quiet.
28:12That's the one you said's not coming.
28:13I don't think so.
28:14I don't think so.
28:15Yeah, I thought there'd be,
28:16well, 20 past 11,
28:18I thought there'd be a couple more folk in,
28:19but we're starting to fill up.
28:23You just don't like seeing blank spaces, you know,
28:26but we're getting there.
28:27It's all completely under control.
28:32Today's event is a celebration of all things British,
28:34including proper British grub.
28:37Everything we're trying to select is British.
28:40So one of our chaps is going to be there
28:42is doing a hog roast filled rolls.
28:45There's going to be pies,
28:46there's going to be pork pies,
28:48scotch eggs and things like that.
28:50Yeah, a variety and lots of cake.
28:52Lots of cake.
28:54And the queen of cakes on the costas
28:56is Londoner Fiona.
28:58So I'm just one of the storeholders,
29:00as usual.
29:01Fiona Cakes
29:03brings out all my homemade delights.
29:05Rather overdid it this time,
29:06thinking there'd be hundreds of people.
29:08We'll see.
29:09It's the last big push now
29:11to get everything ready in time,
29:13but Sally's discovered another problem.
29:15Some of the chairs are wet,
29:17so I don't know if they've been storing them outside.
29:20They're soaking.
29:24No, no.
29:26So soggy chairs.
29:28Hopefully the heat will sort that out, Sally.
29:30Hello.
29:32The last thing you need
29:34at a British day is soggy bottoms.
29:38Yeah, so...
29:40We're open now.
29:41People are starting to come in,
29:42which is fantastic.
29:43Hopefully they do keep coming all day.
29:45So I'm going to go down
29:46and just check that the performers are ready,
29:49that we start getting prepared for that.
29:52And, yeah, the day begins.
29:55Bye!
29:59Hello.
30:01Hello, Grandad.
30:02Are you all right?
30:04Yeah, it's Lady Gaga tonight.
30:06It's the tribute bar,
30:07so it's my first time.
30:09Back in El Faro?
30:10And I've got my new bits for my costume,
30:12so that should be good.
30:13And my wig no longer sits in my eyes.
30:17Paige is getting a pre-performance pep talk
30:19from her number one fan.
30:21Can you ever remember me singing as a child?
30:24Well, no, but let's face it,
30:26have you ever done any training, have you?
30:28No.
30:29What time do you go tonight?
30:30Half past six.
30:31Half past six for soundcheck.
30:33Ready to start at ten.
30:35I hope it's a good crowd for you.
30:37Yeah, me too.
30:38All right, Grandad.
30:39Smile.
30:40Speak to you tomorrow.
30:41I love you.
30:42Bye.
30:43Bye.
30:43Bye.
30:45That was so sweet.
30:47I miss my Grandad so much.
30:49Yeah.
30:51That's why I ring him every day,
30:52because it's just precious.
30:54It's precious that I've still got him to speak to,
30:56and I like to update him with everything that's going on.
31:00It keeps them involved,
31:01and then it doesn't feel like I'm away from him that much.
31:08So I'm just about to pack my bag for this evening.
31:12I think I've got everything.
31:15OK.
31:18We are ready.
31:20Bye, Scroft.
31:21See you soon.
31:22Paige's career has been building to this moment,
31:25and she needs to impress.
31:29It's exciting.
31:31It's nerve-wracking.
31:32I do get the nervous, but it's more nervous excitement now.
31:36I'm just telling myself,
31:37you've got this, it's going to be fine,
31:39you're going to have a great time.
31:41It's taken me a lot to get to this stage.
31:44It's taken me a lot of...
31:46..a lot of doubt, a lot of negativity,
31:48a lot of questioning myself
31:50to get to where I am now.
31:54But tell yourself you can do anything,
31:56and you can do anything.
31:57That's the spirit, Paige.
31:59You've got this.
32:07SIGHS
32:07Yeah, yeah, nervous, apprehensive,
32:10more excited than anything.
32:11My mic's already set up down.
32:14OK.
32:15It's up to show bar manager Yvonne
32:16to make sure the evening goes smoothly.
32:19The customers are coming to see a show.
32:21They've got expectations,
32:23and they expect the best,
32:24and that's what we constantly deliver to them, the best.
32:28Blimey, no pressure then, Paige.
32:30And if there's anything at all that you need to...
32:33..you want to ask, just give me a shout.
32:35Yeah, perfect.
32:36Cos I'm just getting set up now for tonight.
32:38Yeah.
32:38Full house.
32:39Oh, really? Oh, fab.
32:41Yeah.
32:42Full house tonight.
32:43Great.
32:45Absolutely fine.
32:46So we're all really excited for a new show.
32:50And then the smoke, and then I come out.
32:52Ooh, it's exciting.
32:54We're expecting a lot from Paige tonight.
32:56She's going to deliver the goods.
33:04That's all I need to do, am I?
33:05I've done it.
33:05I've done the inside.
33:08It's a year on since we last saw Dave and Sue,
33:11and they've been busy.
33:14We signed the contracts for the house at the end of December,
33:18and then we actually moved in the end of February.
33:22Onwards and upwards, as they say.
33:23So the first thing I need to do is to measure the wallpaper.
33:28But there's always another job to be done when you move house.
33:30I've been doing it for many, many years.
33:34And you can't put it on upside down, can you?
33:36So they're squeezing in a spot of decorating
33:39before a hopefully hectic shift at the cafe.
33:42If this doesn't work, I'll be pasting the wallpaper.
33:46We're only doing from this corner round to the archway.
33:52Attention to detail is crucial here.
33:55Oh, I haven't cut it long enough.
33:57I was joking.
33:58I've basically cocked up.
34:00Hold on to the end of this, please, sweetheart.
34:02It looks like those wallpaper skills were rustier
34:05than you remembered, Dave.
34:07Sort of.
34:08Excellent, Dave.
34:09With only two bits of paper up,
34:11Dave and Sue need to get to the restaurant.
34:15They'll need a bumper afternoon to pay for all Dave's DIY.
34:19The Brits like me roast no matter what the temperature.
34:22Got 11 bucks.
34:24Hope for some walk-ins.
34:26Business has been quiet, but seems to be picking up,
34:29and they need to be completely organised with their roasts.
34:32It's a tight kitchen, but it's great because everything's to hand,
34:35and it's just me in here.
34:37We try and make everything fresh on the day,
34:39so we get in early.
34:42Because of all the preparation that needs to be done.
34:45I've had Yorkshire puddings, of course, which Sue makes.
34:47OK, Steve.
34:49With a mortgage and renovations to pay for,
34:52Dave and Sue are doing everything they can to bring in the punters.
34:55How are we?
34:57Are we good?
34:58Started with 11, we've got 16.
35:00If we get four more, we get to 20.
35:02That'll be a good day, really, at the minute.
35:04Everyone seems to come in at the same time.
35:07Two glasses of handmade tangria.
35:09It's very rare that it's constant.
35:11You'll get one order, and then all of a sudden,
35:13you'll have five orders up.
35:14No, I'm done in just cut check.
35:17I'll throw that.
35:18I've had enough.
35:20Too late for that, Dave.
35:22A pint isn't enough.
35:24And the orders keep on coming.
35:26How many roasts?
35:27We've got four left, have we?
35:29I don't know, darling.
35:30Yeah, four, but they've got to be chicken, I think.
35:32They've got to be chicken, yeah, definitely.
35:35Yeah, they're done.
35:37I mean, that's soft, they just disintegrated.
35:39Good job I make extra.
35:42Ah, another broken one.
35:46Good mash.
35:48But everything is going to plan if the customers are happy, eh, Dave?
35:52And on table nine, Sue's Yorkies are under scrutiny
35:56from a quartet of experts from Yorkshire.
35:59Good old Yorkshire tradition.
36:01We take it everywhere we go.
36:02How's your lunch?
36:03It's good, awesome food.
36:07And the Yorkshires?
36:09They are fantastic.
36:10They're better than mine, and mine are good.
36:13Ooh, compliments to the chef, then.
36:15And the chief cook and bottle washer are chuffed to bits, too.
36:19I don't think there's anything left, is there?
36:20No.
36:21Fully sold out.
36:22We'll take that at the moment.
36:24Do I do it?
36:2523 roasts.
36:26So, it hit the magic over 20.
36:29That was a manic...
36:30Manic four hours.
36:31Four hours.
36:32Yeah.
36:33Plenty of dishes, which is good.
36:34Money in the tip.
36:36Yay!
36:37Cheers.
36:39Cheers.
36:39Dave and Sue are keeping their customers well-fed
36:43and they're decorating fun topped up for another week.
36:46Happy customers.
36:48Coming up...
36:49Are we all ready?
36:52It's almost time for Paige's moment in the spotlight.
36:55I just want to get it done now.
36:57And it's make or break time for Sally at her British bonanza.
37:01The hat is on.
37:03MUSIC PLAYS
37:15How silly do I look now?
37:17The hat is on.
37:19In Estepona, Sally's British day is underway
37:21with delights from all corners of Britain.
37:24It's starting.
37:26It's actually starting.
37:30Among the musical highlights are the Pipers and Sally's choir.
37:38And I'm just going down to join them now
37:40and get ready and prepared
37:41because we are going to be on next
37:42after the sewer pipe band and dancers.
37:46Exciting.
37:46Now, Sally needs to hit the right note
37:49as the event organiser
37:50and as a member of the choir on stage.
37:53CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
38:11That went quite well.
38:13Hopefully, hopefully it sounds a dude.
38:15No idea what it sounds like at back at all.
38:18I'm ready for a drink and a bit to eat.
38:21I can feel the hangry bit coming back.
38:23Thank you very much.
38:24So, I've got to get myself off, get changed, get fed.
38:28So, grab some scrans, Sally.
38:29You've earned it.
38:30And speaking of food...
38:32Well, it looks like we've been attacked
38:34by a crowd of locusts, actually.
38:37Everybody's coming for their takeaways
38:39because I've been doing orders the whole time,
38:41but a lot of them are in the chiller,
38:43so now they're all coming back to take them.
38:46Ah, the sweet taste of success.
38:48It's great.
38:50You know, we like to keep the flag flying.
38:53Everybody has a really good time.
38:54It's good fun.
38:55It's a lovely day where we celebrate being together
38:58as a big English-speaking community.
39:01What's your favourite part of the day?
39:03It's generally talking to all the different people.
39:05I think that's my enjoyment.
39:07And then, I guess, as well, seeing it all come together.
39:09Yep, it's all, um...
39:12..all happening and, yeah, it goes to plan.
39:15Always like it when it goes to plan.
39:17Yeah, what about you?
39:18Watching the choir singing whilst eating a pulled pork sandwich
39:20was probably my favourite part of the day.
39:22What was the most enjoyable bit out of that, though?
39:24Oh, it was a tough call, to be very honest.
39:26I wouldn't want to make a decision.
39:27You feel you've got to see the choir, haven't you?
39:31So you worked really hard today,
39:33and I think it's about time we went back home
39:35and opened that cheeky bottle of red wine
39:37that we've got, especially for this occasion.
39:39That sounds good.
39:41Looking forward to that.
39:43Definitely.
39:44Definitely.
39:50It's your first time here, isn't it?
39:51Yep.
39:52Oh, my God.
39:53I've been here once to watch you.
39:55At the Tribune Bar in La Cala...
39:58Can I quickly do the sound levels?
40:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
40:01Because, as you can imagine, I'm panicking.
40:04It's nearly time for Paige's big debut.
40:07One, two, two, two.
40:08Again.
40:09Is that all right on there?
40:10One, two.
40:11One, two.
40:12I'm going to put my mic stand...
40:14Well, yep, you're going to put my mic stand there.
40:16You can put it here if you need to as well.
40:18I'm just going to start getting ready.
40:21So, yeah, I'm just going to put my eyelashes on
40:23and do my make-up.
40:26Not long to wait now.
40:27I'm feeling ready and I'm feeling excited.
40:30I just want to get it done now.
40:32After dreaming of this moment for 30 years,
40:35it's time for Paige to show the Costa crowd
40:37what she's made of.
40:38OK, folks, are we all ready?
40:44Where's all the Gaga fans?
40:48Well, this is her debut here.
40:52Come on.
40:56It's showtime!
40:59Wow, you certainly look the part, Paige.
41:02Let's hope you sound it, too.
41:04I want to hear you singing along with me.
41:07Ladies and gentlemen,
41:09this is probably the most requested Lady Gaga song
41:13of all time.
41:15Shall we?
