00:23Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:27up all of Kent's sporting action. I'm Finn McDermott and here's what you can expect on
00:31Monday 23rd February.
00:34No points at Priestfield, we discussed Gillingham's 3-0 loss against Oldham Athletic at home.
00:43If the scarf fits, Ashford resident hopes to break record for marathon running and knitting.
00:50And safe to swim, Folkestone Beach set to become new designated bathing spots as open water
00:55to swimmers react.
00:57But first, a round up of your headlines. Bradley Dack had a sombre reaction after suffering
01:02three goals from Oldham inside 20 minutes at Priestfield.
01:05He says we didn't battle enough. It felt like they outfought us, which is a difficult thing
01:10to say as a Gillingham player, because that's what this club is built on. He went on to say
01:14you might lose football matches. That happens, but you should never be outfought by the opposition.
01:18The Gills will next face Barrow on the road.
01:21We can hear now from Bradley Dack.
01:23Where the players going out there and putting in performances like that isn't good enough.
01:28Obviously, we let him down, let the fans down.
01:32Yeah, so it's a difficult one to take for us. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror,
01:35every single one of us. What we can do better, what we can do more of, how we can improve,
01:41all these things. And I know it's something that the fans don't want to hear.
01:46The cliches and stuff like that, I don't really like it either. But we've just got to go back to
01:51basics,
01:51I think. Do the right things. Shouldn't have a bad game off the ball, ever.
01:58Over to Dover now. And it was a frustrating afternoon at the Crabble Stadium, but the manager,
02:02Jake LaBeal, says there's positive to take from the one-all draw against Western Supermare.
02:08Defender Jacob Mensah put Dover into the lead, but the advantage lasted just minutes before Luke Colson
02:14equalised from the penalty spot after midfielder Bavesh Gurung fouled Will Dawes.
02:18It was a really difficult game against a really good side, said LaBeal, whose troops host title
02:23chasing Hornchurch on Tuesday. Apologies, these are the wrong pitchers, that is Ebbsfleet United.
02:28Apologies there. Moving on now, we're going to be continuing on to Chatham Town Women's.
02:34Now, their magical FA Cup run is all over after taking eight goals to nil. That was facing off against
02:41Birmingham City. Yeah, the side had beaten AFC Wimbledon, Exeter City and York City in a record
02:48home crowd to get to this stage. The Chatham were the lowest-ranked side left in the competition,
02:54going away to Birmingham, who were two divisions above too much for the Chats.
02:59The manager, Keith Bonas, said, I think everyone did their best and tried their best.
03:04Next, Matt Weston from Tunbridge Wells had a night he would never forget after being bestowed the honour
03:09to carry the British flags in the Winter Olympics closing ceremony. Weston became known for his
03:14double skeleton success at Cortina. Nils became the first British athlete to be awarded two gold
03:20medals at the same Winter Games, alongside Charlotte Banks, who won Britain's first ever gold on snow.
03:25Matt Weston said, to be selected as a flag bearer is a massive, massive honour. I'm so proud to be
03:30able to represent the country at the closing ceremony. Next, as I say, it was a tough fixture
03:35for the Jills, suffering a 3-0 defeat at home against Oldham. Ainsworth seemed angry on the
03:42sidelines after fans booed the team off the pitch, with Travis Acomia seeming to be the target of a
03:48lot of the fans' wrath. Now, the Jills currently sit at 16th after a difficult run of fixtures.
03:54This is a secure 14 points above the relegation zone, but fans clearly aren't pleased with the side.
04:00I was joined earlier by one fan and a student journalist here, Tom Fullergar, to tell me more
04:05about the match. Tell us, it wasn't the easiest start to a Jills match. Talk us through it.
04:10Yeah, just no change from last time, really. Just hoofing it up. I thought, you start the game like
04:17that, you're never going to win it. I think we did start playing the football, but there's no way we
04:22were going to ever win just hoofing it up to a player that was like six foot five at the
04:26back.
04:26He was absolutely massive and Vokes had no chance against him. He just wasn't getting up for it.
04:31So we weren't creating much at that end of the pitch. How was our defending? I'm aware of that
04:35first goal wasn't a great one to concede. Beckles and Acomia struggled a lot. Acomia,
04:41I like him, but he did have not a great game. I don't think he deserved to be booed off.
04:47As a young
04:47player, I don't think that's ever going to help his confidence, but he had a couple of slip-ups,
04:52especially coming out of the second half as well. He, yeah, I think he mistouched the ball
04:59and then got booked for taking someone down. So then Gale got subbed on, but yeah, not great
05:04for him, but he has been all right. So give him his due. I see. And there was also a
05:08set piece
05:08conceded. Talk us through that goal. Well, it's another set piece conceded. Just not getting up
05:14for the ball is not physical enough. Again, Oldham are a team that's just come up and they're
05:18just out-muscling us all the time. It's just not even getting to the second balls and they're
05:23just ball watching. It's just all the same stuff that they're just not improving on.
05:27I see. And then obviously the third and final goal. Tell us a bit about that. How did that
05:31go down? Beckles gets beat really easily. I mean, for a player of his experience,
05:35it's not good enough at all. Pace-wise, he gets beaten. He gets out of strength. That fondop was
05:41amazing for them. I think it's the kind of striker we should sign. I think defensively was great.
05:45He had the pace as well. And his playmaking was brilliant as well. So that's the kind
05:51of play we need at the moment. Absolutely. Was there anyone in that 11 or maybe the whole
05:55squad that really you thought had a good showing, a good performance in that game?
05:58Hale and Dak were the only two that I thought were any good. McCleary maybe before we come
06:03off. But yeah, Hale was trying and trying despite not getting really any chances given to him.
06:08I think he's the only one and Dak that can really hold their heads up and say they did enough.
06:13Absolutely. You mentioned McCleary there. Do you think he's going to be okay
06:15it was a bit of an injury? I think a player that as old as he is, he's going to
06:19be struggling
06:20now to get back from these injuries. Again, it's a player on the wing that's got an injury.
06:25So who are we going to put there? You know, Rose out of favour. So there's literally no one
06:31we can put there. It's ridiculous. Absolutely. I'm aware also Andrew's had a bit of a miss
06:36from close range. Tell us about that. Do you still have confidence in him up front?
06:40No. I just don't know how he's missed it. But he's had so many chances that he's missed
06:46and I've never seen such a big man so scared to go up for the ball. Him and Vokes are
06:55like
06:55just two of the same really. They're not any better than each other. Yeah, Andrew's that
07:00miss. Lean back so much for it. It was a good ball by Antwi as well to set him up.
07:05But my
07:05God, terrible. And you mentioned there Akamea got booed off. That kind of toxic atmosphere,
07:11is that something that you're getting used to at Priestfield? Yeah, a couple of times.
07:14I think people are used to the disappointment by now. It's a laugh or you'll cry sort of thing.
07:18It's really hard because you're almost like dragging yourself to these Saturday games to
07:23see the same old thing every time. No change. Ainsworth saying the same thing in the media
07:28all the time as well. You know, the players seem to be quite happy with, you know, not playing
07:32at their best. I don't, you know, I don't think you should ever be booing, but I do think
07:36they should know we're just, we're not happy with the way that things are going. They've
07:40got to be better. I don't care what stage we're at in the season or, you know, we're not going
07:45to get playoffs. They've still got to play for that badge at the end of the day.
07:49Absolutely. Thank you so much for your time, Tom.
07:51That was Tom Fulligar there. Next, Sandgate Beach in Folkestone is set to become one of
07:57the UK's newest designated bathing spots. The move means it will receive regular water
08:03quality testing so that it's safe for swimmers. And this also comes alongside the growing issue
08:07of water pollution, which has left several beaches around Kent regularly experiencing
08:11toxic levels of sewage. Our reporter Chloe Brewster went down to Sandgate to find more about
08:17water pollution and whether or not the move will bring a greater sense of security to
08:22bathers there. She also spoke to a local swim coach who talked about exactly what it means
08:26when you're not sure if the water you're going into is safe. As I say, Chloe Brewster has this
08:31story. Let's take a look.
08:33Last year, raw sewage was dumped into UK waterways almost a million times. Surfers Against Sewage
08:40reported that in 2024, they received 1,853 sickness reports because of infected water,
08:47reflecting nearly half a million pounds in lost productivity due to sick days taken. But
08:53pollution has an impact not only on the economy, but for nature and people's well-being.
08:58Sandgate Beach here in Folkestone is set to become one of the UK's newest bathing spots.
09:02Should beaches really be ruled in as safe rather than being ruled out as unsafe?
09:07I've grown up in Sandgate and I've always been in the sea, loved the water. I just started
09:13swimming every single day since 2019. And then in 2021, I started a swim coaching business.
09:20I suffered a lot with anxiety years ago and since going in here every day, I've become
09:25much more calmer.
09:26The label of designated bathing spot essentially means the waterway will receive regular quality
09:31testing throughout the bathing season, which is May through to September. Sandgate Beach
09:36is the only beach in Kent set to become a new designated bathing spot.
09:39You know, that huge amount of awareness and publicity has brought this to fruition and I think
09:46that's huge. But I think there's still, I think there's still a gap between policy and
09:53real world experience because I think people are still having to cancel their swims and change
09:58their routines and it has a massive impact on people's health and well-being.
10:02I've seen a real growth in open water swimming. You know, it wasn't a thing that people did
10:07really before the pandemic and it has grown so much. But I've seen the numbers decreasing
10:12in the last couple of years since the awareness has been brought up, which has been wonderful,
10:16but it's certainly put people off going in the water.
10:20The Environment Agency say the consultation comes alongside reform of the water system with
10:25the Water Special Measures Act introducing tougher enforcement powers. That includes criminal liability
10:30for water bosses who cover up illegal sewage spills and the power to block bonuses. Last year,
10:37£4 million of bonuses were prevented from reaching bosses' pockets.
10:41More needs to be done to clean up our waterways. A total transformation of the system,
10:46of the water system, needs to be implemented. Currently, the government and their recent white
10:50paper isn't doing enough to do that, especially in relation to public health. We need a regulator
10:56that enforces the law. Swimming in our rivers, lakes or beaches is so proven to be good for our
11:02physical and mental health. It's also in terms of those seaside towns, it's great for the local
11:08economy. So having clean water benefits people, business and just, you know, nature. I think there's
11:16the knock-on effects of more bathing waters. There'll be co-benefits to cleaning up our waterways
11:21to improve the environment and nature as well. Back on the beach, Kirstie kindly offered to coach
11:28me to become a sea swimmer. But I think it's a little bit too chilly for me to get my
11:32costume on
11:33just yet. Chloe Brewster to KMTV in Sandgate. No, no, no, no, not for me.
11:40Now we've reached half time, which means it is time for a break. But coming up, we'll go through all
11:46the results from around the county at the weekend, including Chatham Women's FA Cup run, which has
11:51come to an end. But we'll be taking a trip to the Beauville Stadium where they hosted the
11:55FA Cup before the match. All that after this short break.
12:17we'll be back.
12:28Bye.
12:35Bye.
12:37Bye.
12:39Bye.
25:22disease association which is an amazing charity who help out people with Huntington's disease
25:27which is a rare neurological condition my mum's got Huntington's disease so that's
25:33what i know about the charity and they do really good outreach work for people
25:36a real charity which is a charity which is based around mental health for veterans and frontline
25:43services and they do that through movement the previous record holder of the longest scarf made
25:49during a marathon is david babcock who knitted a 3.7 meter garment whilst running at the kansas
25:55city marathon in 2013. knitting is obviously for me it's really i've been doing it for 10 years so
26:03it's quite easy and running as well it's quite easy but when you mix the two the things i didn't
26:07expect
26:08were you've got to keep your upper body really still so you can't drive with your arms and quite
26:13a lot of power when you're running is is caused it's taken from your upper body so because you've
26:17got to keep that really still um it's really like all legs basically while he might have his work
26:24cut out if his training in victoria park has anything to go by he certainly proved that knitters
26:30aren't quitters megan shaw for km tv in ashford and that is full time on today's episode of invictor
