00:21Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, as always the only show on your TV dedicated
00:27to wrapping up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:29I'm Finn McDermott and here's what you can expect on Monday 9th February.
00:34Up for the Gilles, the side bounce back with a win at home after a double defeat.
00:41A tiring challenge, Broadstairs man takes on an Arctic ultramarathon challenge with a unique
00:47training routine.
00:50And KMTV Supreme, I face off against a professional table tennis player who also trained Timothee
00:56Chalamet in Marty Supreme.
00:59But first of all, a round up of your headlines and Gillingham's new signing.
01:02Ronan Hale has dedicated his weekend double to his grandfather who passed away earlier
01:07this week.
01:08Danny Hale had won three amateur international cups for Northern Ireland after scoring more
01:12than 300 goals across his career.
01:15And his grandson Ronan looked set to match that.
01:18With a home match against Tranmere Hale, he netted two to earn the Gilles three points.
01:22Ronan said he was my hero to score two goals two days after it happened.
01:27He was definitely watching down on me.
01:28He would be buzzing.
01:29I've had a tough week, but I know he'll be watching down and getting those two goals would
01:33have been massive.
01:34Now we can hear a little more from Ronan about how the match went.
01:38Yeah, it's massive.
01:40Obviously, I've had a tough week and my grandfather passed away a couple of days ago, so I know
01:45he'll be watching down and getting them two goals would have been massive.
01:48I'm sorry to hear that, but was it a nice moment thinking about him to stick those two
01:54chances away and reflect?
01:56Yeah, massive because he would have been raging if it didn't.
01:59He would have been straight on to me if it didn't bury them chances.
02:02So, you know, them two goals were for him and I'm looking forward to the next few games
02:06now.
02:08Next, former Olympic champion Amy Williams has backed Tunbridge Wells' Matt Weston to
02:12follow in her footsteps and bring home skeleton gold for Team GB at Milano Cortina.
02:17Weston begins his training today and will hope to emulate Williams' victory at Vancouver
02:212010 from Thursday.
02:23Williams says she's loved watching Weston's rise and added that staying calm under pressure
02:28could propel him to gold.
02:29She added that Matt has consistently got better and better.
02:33It is a big expectation, but personally I think you just have to not think about it.
02:36Put it away and concentrate on you forgetting all the media chat.
02:40Concentrate on what you're doing, write track notes, do a track walk and treat it like any
02:44other competition.
02:45If he can do all of that, he will fly.
02:48Next, former Leeds Rhinos Super League star Jess Haynes held a netball coaching session at
02:53her former school St Michael's Prep in Otford.
02:56Haynes currently plays for the KC Diamonds in Australia and led netball sessions for various
03:01age groups during their PE lessons.
03:03I absolutely loved being back at St Michael's to coach netball, she added.
03:07We focused on dictating in defence, working together and changing body angles.
03:11The girls were attentive, hard working and a pleasure to coach.
03:14She thanked them for having them back.
03:17Next, Punjab United have been handed a home draw in the FA Vays quarter-finals.
03:23They will host Wessex League Downton who sit 11th in their league table.
03:27Downton beat Lymore Gardens 3-0 in the fifth round with the player, coach and former Portsmouth
03:32striker Brett Pittman among their scorers.
03:35Punjab beat Fisher 2-0 in the last 16 on Saturday.
03:38Their previous best run in the Vays was reaching the second round in 24-25.
03:43The tyres are due to be played on Saturday, February 28th, with winning teams earning more
03:47than £4,000 in prize money, with losing teams also collecting more than £1,000.
03:52Former Kent cricket captain has urged the current skipper, Daniel Beldrummond, to enjoy a well-deserved testimonial year.
03:59Fulton will help Beldrummond kick off his year of celebration by hosting a panel of past captains.
04:05Beldrummond made his Kent first-class debut 15 years ago and Fulton is pleased to see that service recognised.
04:10He said it's thoroughly well-deserved in Daniel's case.
04:13He's been a fantastic servant at Kent for a long time.
04:17Next, a small business from Gillingham has won the opportunity to become a season-long sponsor
04:20of their local football team.
04:22Couple Simon and Sian from Monarch Mortgages are big Gillingham fans
04:26and, after winning a competition, will now see their logo adorn the players' jackets and stadium.
04:30Chloe Brewster has more.
04:32For many small businesses, good marketing opportunities would be leafleting or even a billboard.
04:37But for Monarch Mortgages from Gillingham, they've been invited to join the big boys in football sponsorship.
04:42After winning the Behind the Badge campaign by Sage, owners Simon and Sian have received an exclusive sponsorship package of
04:49Gillingham FC,
04:49which will see their branding illuminate Pitchside all season long.
04:54For us as a local business, as a small local business, it's massive.
04:59Obviously we're frequent visitors to come and watch the games as well,
05:01so to be able to be sitting and seeing our brand around the stadium in front of so many people
05:07is a fantastic opportunity for us.
05:08We've been around for six years or so now,
05:12but to get that presence out there and to see that we're representing our community
05:17and seeing that in that space is massive for us.
05:20A lot of our business at the moment is word of mouth,
05:22but we're hoping by the kind of marketing that we'll get here that that will obviously grow it even more
05:28because we are just a, you know, quite a small family, one business that we're literally about 10 minutes from
05:33here.
05:33So yeah, it'd be great to get the word out.
05:35We try and get to as many games as we can, but obviously thanks to Sage,
05:40we'll now be able to do that even more often.
05:45We're going to block some weekends out and get down to as many home games as we can.
05:49So with the stadium nettle right here in the centre of Gillingham,
05:52there's not much better marketing you can get, especially as that marketing is totally free.
05:57I think it's, you know, massive, especially for a club like ourselves,
06:00you know, to have the, you know, businesses that put their own money in and it really does help
06:05and we really appreciate it.
06:07And yeah, it's like a fantastic competition, you know, for Sage and the EFL to put forward.
06:13And, you know, Monarch mortgages have obviously won that competition and it's fantastic for them.
06:19And they get their sponsorship around the LED boards for the rest of the season.
06:23And yeah, I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of that on match day. So it's, yeah, fantastic.
06:28I actually, I actually live next door to one of the colleagues they work with.
06:32So obviously you're, you're seeing them, you're having a personal feel and it's, yeah, it's brilliant to see.
06:37The team here tell me the goal of this opportunity is to shine a light on the small businesses
06:41at the heart of their football community.
06:43Chloe Brewster for KMTV in Gillingham.
06:46Well, clearly some victories off the pitch, but they've certainly been doing well on the pitch as well.
06:51To talk about their latest home win against Tran Nair, I was joined earlier by our student journalist
06:55and Jules fan, Tom Fuligar.
06:58And Tom joins me in the studio. So Tom, a win at home. Just tell us the general feeling.
07:04Positive, obviously. It didn't really seem even though they got a goal back that we were really going to lose
07:09it.
07:10It did. The second half was tailing off a bit, but I felt we were comfortably the better team.
07:15They didn't really offer a whole lot, Tran Nair. So yeah, good win.
07:20Absolutely. And I mean, when you've got a new signing, I don't think you can have almost a better full
07:25debut game than that.
07:26Scores the brace. Tell us a bit about those goals.
07:29So the first one, come off a little flick on, he volleyed it, Hale volleyed it really where we caught
07:34it first time
07:35and celebrated right in front of the Tran Nair fans. And then the second one, another one from a corner
07:39as well.
07:40He headed in, 6-yard box. You know, it's exactly the poacher we need at the moment.
07:45He just needs to be in those positions. He's a really hard worker and I really like him.
07:50So hopefully this is a great striker in the making.
07:54Absolutely. All the signs are there. Playing out of position, giving it large to the Tran Nair fans.
07:59What more gills can you get than that really?
08:03And yeah, he played on the left because of Roe being injured. Do you think he's successfully kind of filled
08:08that space?
08:09It's hard. I think we've seen that with Nebit before. Swindon, that didn't really work.
08:15Seb Palmer Holden sometimes plays on the wing as well. I don't particularly like her.
08:19I would always prefer a winger, but I think he did a really good job.
08:23He's quick. He's really passionate as well. His work rate's really good.
08:28And McCleary was doing really well on the right as well. So actually the play was going through him mostly
08:33anyway.
08:33So it worked in the end.
08:35I was going to ask you about that. So you had McCleary and Hutton on the right side.
08:39Tell me about their performance throughout the Tran Nair match.
08:41They were really good. It's Hutton's 100th appearance for the club as well.
08:44So it was a great way to mark it. I think attacking wise, he was great.
08:48Defensively, I still think maybe a little bit of liability, but he was pinging some really good balls over the
08:53top.
08:54And McCleary was just insane. I thought first half a really good touch and a really good shot as well.
09:00And yeah, he's got all the skill. And yeah, absolutely.
09:04And I mean, I feel like the spotlight is very much on Hale at the minute.
09:08But tell me, how have our other signings performed? Obviously, Akomea has come back from Watford.
09:13And we've also got our new signing of Beckles, who's come to us from Leighton Orient.
09:16Both defenders. Tell me a bit about how do you think they've done?
09:19We're a good partnership because Beckles has got all the experience and Akomea has got, you know, not as much
09:24because he's young.
09:26But I feel like Akomea is a really big lad and Beckles is really calm and composed on the ball.
09:31So I think Akomea can learn from him. I really hope that maybe we could sign him at the end
09:36of the season.
09:36But who knows? But Beckles, yeah, it's fitted in really well.
09:41Brilliant. And tell us a bit about the impact of some of the substitutions. Tell me about that.
09:45Yeah, so I felt second half, I feel like we were tailing off a bit.
09:49I think the energy levels had dropped massively and I was a bit scared we were going to drop it.
09:56But subs come on, like Dak, Vokes and McCleary come off. I feel that Dak had a bit of a
10:04quiet game.
10:06Vokes had one ambitious shot, but apart from that, it didn't really do a whole lot.
10:11But McCleary was the best at the bunch. But yeah, I felt like Seb Palmer Holden coming on, Mackenzie coming
10:16on and Gale coming on.
10:17That helped us see off the win.
10:19Absolutely. And next up, it is an away game. Tell us who are the Gels facing and how do you
10:24think it's going to go?
10:25Yeah, so we've got Crewe away from home. They're ninth at the moment.
10:29So the current form is really hard to say. They're unbeaten in the last four.
10:34But yeah, I really can't say because we're so on and off, but I feel like that was a positive
10:40display.
10:41Tuesday night, not so much. That was really horrible watching.
10:45So, you know, another away game that hopefully doesn't go like that.
10:49Yeah, absolutely. Fingers crossed for that. And just before we go, we can actually hear a little bit from the
10:54manager, Gareth Ainsworth himself.
10:56Yeah, the lads were superb. You know, they've dug deep. Yeah, we've made it a little bit harder than it
11:02could have been.
11:03But I'm really pleased. You know, we could have scored quite a few goals in that first half and it
11:08would have been more comfortable than it was.
11:10But fair play to Tramia. They dug deep, come at us. Nothing to lose.
11:14And it's really hard to play against a team that's got nothing to lose.
11:17They throw things forward at you. They play with a freedom and we're hanging on to something, you know.
11:23And to be fair, you know, the boys have done brilliant in the last two games as well.
11:28You know, I thought Bromley, second half, better team. Notts County, second half, better team.
11:34So I'm pleased. Probably second half, not the better team today, but we've come away from it with a win.
11:40So I'm really, really proud of the boys. They've run and travelled and run and run again this week.
11:48You know, they really have. They've been through a tough week.
11:51Now we've reached half time, which means it is time for a break.
11:55But coming up, we'll talk to Kent's own Taylor Lawrence, who's competing in the Winter Olympics.
11:59All that and more after this short break.
12:21You've just finished with the win.
12:49How did you get your Luego to Premier 2018?
17:10career. It's what everyone dreams of. You spend years and years working, training, sacrificing
17:18and when you finally get to that point to be able to stand on the start line and compete
17:23for your country, it's a great feeling. For myself, coming from a military background
17:27as well, being able to represent both the service and GB on the world stage is something
17:33that I absolutely relish and I love.
17:36And you touched on your background there. I wonder if you could tell us a bit more about
17:39how you got into bobsleigh, which is what you're competing in. A lot of people, I feel, maybe
17:45started their sports when they were children, but for you, it was a little bit different.
17:48So can you tell us about that?
17:51Yeah, so bobsleigh is a bit of a transfer sport. People in the UK, anyway, don't tend to want
17:56to go and be a bobsleigh athlete. So I came from kind of football, rugby backgrounds, so
18:02I've always been a very keen sportsman. And then it wasn't until I joined the military
18:05that I got the opportunity to give bobsleigh a go. Within the military and the Marines,
18:10you get exposed to sports you wouldn't tend to normally do. And yeah, I got the opportunity
18:14to try bobsleigh. One of the guys that got me into it was, I used to play, I played rugby
18:19with him. I saw that I was quite big and quite quick. He said, do you want to come and
18:22give
18:22this a go? And I jumped at the opportunity. And here I am kind of six years later, absolutely
18:28loving it. And yeah, everyone tends to come from a different sport, whether it's track
18:32and field, team sports. Yeah, that's sort of how I found my way into it. And I'm glad
18:37I did because I'm having some of the best times, the best experiences doing this sport.
18:42And I personally always get a bit confused between luge, skeleton, bobsleigh. So for our viewers
18:48who maybe aren't too short, are you right? Just to give a bit of a rundown about what
18:52competing in bobsleigh looks like.
18:56Yeah, absolutely. So luge, you lay on your back and that's feet first. Skeleton is laying
19:02on your front and head first. And then bobsleigh is typically in the sled. So you've got the
19:08two-man event and the four-man event. So in this Olympics, I'll be doing the two-man and
19:12the four-man. In the two-man, I am the brakeman. So the guy that pulls the brakes at the
19:18end. And then in the four-man, I'm the number three. So I enter the sled third. And then
19:23it's actually the guy at number four who pulls the brakes. But the three guys that push the
19:28sled on the left, the right, and the back are called brakeman. And then you've got your
19:31pilot on the front. So our job is to get the sled up to speed and then load with as
19:36much
19:36intent and velocity as possible. And then give the pilot the best possible opportunity to
19:41pilot us down nice and safely.
19:44Awesome. I know this isn't your first Olympics, so I bet you've been doing years and years of
19:48training. So what does training for the bobsleigh look like? Is it just making sure you can
19:52run fast?
19:55Yeah. So bobsleigh training is basically all of the best elements of all of the other
20:00sports that you have to do. So it's about being fast, powerful, plyometrics. And we do
20:05lots of sprinting, lots of jumping, lots of strength work in the gym. And it's kind of just bringing
20:11all of those fun elements together. So yeah, being nice and fast, nice and powerful, explosive,
20:17especially from the brakeman's point of view anyway, which is one of the reasons that I love
20:21what I do, because it's what I enjoy training the most to do.
20:26And I'm sure. And my final question for you is, I know you've won a couple of medals across
20:34world champions in the past few years, but what is the goal for the Winter Olympics in Milan?
20:42Yeah, well, I mean, the standard answer is to go do your best. And obviously, that's what
20:48we want to go and do. But ultimately, we're going there as medal hopefuls. And the last
20:55few years, we've been absolutely flying as a team. We've come away with, like you alluded
21:00to, world championship medals, European champs, European championship medals, a whole host of
21:05World Cup medals. We beat these, we beat the top guys week in, week out. We compete against,
21:13it's all the same people that we compete against in the World Cup and in the Olympics. So it's
21:18nothing that we're not used to. But yeah, I mean, we're going for medals, at least in
21:22the four man. And that's what we see our greatest medal potential. But there's also an outside
21:27chance for the two man as well. So I think if you ask anyone in the team, medals is obviously
21:32what we want. We're going for gold. But I'm sure we'll get over a bronze or silver Olympic
21:38medal pretty quickly.
21:40I'm sure it'll do.
21:43Yeah, it will do. It will do. Well, I mean, so our, a couple of our coaches that we've
21:48got are bronze Olympic medalists as well. So if we can at least go one better than them,
21:53that gives us bragging rights over them.
21:56Perfect. Thank you so much for joining us, Taylor, and for taking the time out of your
21:59really busy training days. I'm sure it was great to speak to you.
22:04Yeah, you're more than welcome. Thank you very much.
22:05Thank you. We'll be following you. We'll all be tuning in.
22:09Amazing. Thanks so much.
22:12Next, anyone waking up early in Broadstairs might have spotted someone dragging a tyre
22:16across the beach, no matter the weather. His name is Rob Wilkinson, and it's actually training
22:21for an Arctic ultramarathon that'll see him cover 500 kilometres over a 10-day period,
22:26while having to drag his survival supplies behind him on a sled. I went down to the beach
22:30to find out more about Rob and the challenge.
22:33Here in Kent, the weather isn't always our best friend, but one man from Broadstairs seems
22:38to have made it his personal enemy. Dragging a tyre from Broadstairs Beach along the coastline
22:43to Ramsgate is a regular task for Rob Wilkinson, who was born and raised in the town.
22:48The weight of the tyre and the friction of the sand is supposed to mimic the resistance
22:52of a sled being dragged across snow, all to make sure Rob is ready for hauling his food,
22:57kit and survival gear for 10 days across the Arctic.
23:01So it's called the Lapland Arctic Ultra. It's just over 500 kilometres across the Arctic,
23:07fully self-supported. I'll be putting a sled. It's going to be pretty chilly. They've told
23:12me to prepare for temperatures down to minus 40, which is no joke. It feels a bit like today,
23:18I think. It's going to be interesting, that's for sure. As I said, I think it's just a combination
23:28of constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone and seeing how far I can go.
23:34Rob's been told by others that the Lapland Arctic Ultra is quite a difficult challenge, but
23:40Rob has done others that he hopes will prepare him for the gruelling distance.
23:44Rob has done quite a few different endurance events. In 2019, I was part of the No Man
23:51campaign and that was a race with eight ocean rowing boats, four man teams and over five
23:57days we rode across the Mediterranean or part of the Mediterranean. A couple of years ago,
24:03I took part in something called the Fat Viking and nothing to do with how I look. It was an
24:12ultra-endurance bike ride on mountain bikes with fat tyres, hence the name, and I rode
24:18non-stop for 24 hours and 40 minutes and that was pretty brutal.
24:25The challenge isn't just for Rob to see if he can complete it, but also to raise money
24:29for Kent Search and Rescue as well as Fallen Field Special Needs School. When he heads off
24:34in March, temperatures will reach as low as minus 40 degrees and he'll have to cover around
24:38500 kilometres, which is equal to roughly 10 ultra-marathons back-to-back. Naturally, this
24:44had me wondering, is training on Broadstairs Beach with a tyre really enough? Well, I would
24:49come to regret that question, as well as not checking the weather before I set off this morning.
24:54Well, it's definitely quite heavy and I can't really imagine dragging this across the Arctic,
24:59let alone across Broadstairs Beach. Finn McDermott for KMTV in Broadstairs.
25:10And instead of Arctic ultra-marathons, you might be interested more in the JILS scoreline. Well,
