00:19Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:24up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:26I'm Finn McDermott and here's what you can expect on Monday the 9th of March.
00:56But first, a round-up of the headlines and the Jills striker said Palmer Holden has admitted
01:00how devastated the team are at their position after a draw to Fleetwood.
01:05Palmer Holden's late second-half goal at Priestfield Stadium on Saturday looked promising
01:10for the Jills, but Fleetwood struck deep into stoppage time, finishing the game off at a
01:15draw at 1-1.
01:16He added that I know every player on that pitch gave it their all and we've got to
01:20look at the positives and we've got a point from the game.
01:23Now over to rugby and Medway's regional one south-easter away trip to Amersham and Chiltern
01:28has ended in defeat with a final score of 29-22.
01:33Starting exchanges largely in the hosts' possession, Medway strode a promising strong outset building
01:40pressure throughout the match.
01:41Medway's drills were disrupted by injuries as Pete Cole was replaced by David Serac later.
01:48Harrison Fermor swapped with John Sapawa.
01:51Owen Churchmills progressed on to fly half.
01:53Max Bullock won Medway's first try, though he did miss their conversion.
01:57The score pushed them into contesting before half-time.
02:00Despite setbacks, the team's strong performance and resilience earned them two bonus points.
02:05Next to cricket and former Kent bowling coach and right-arm bowler Robbie Joseph is set
02:10to join Canterbury Cricket Club as a player coach.
02:13Joseph played for Kent between 2004 and 2011 and later in 2014 and will join the Kent League
02:19Championship team ahead of 2026's summer season.
02:22A club spokesperson has praised his experience, leadership and passion for developing players
02:27to the club.
02:27He boasts 110 appearances for Kent across two playing terms, in which he took 230 wickets
02:33across all formats.
02:34After placing third and narrowly missing promotion to Kent's top league, they were just 12 points
02:39behind Whitstable.
02:40Joseph is hopeful the team will go on further this time.
02:44Next, Ebsfleet United manager Josh Wright has celebrated a 3-0 victory against Torquay
02:49United in National League South at Stonebridge Road.
02:53The three goals came from Samuel, Appiah and Wiley and all had strong team play and build-up.
02:58Wright said the fleet wanted it more and added he was proud of his team's efforts, saying
03:02we're going to need that in abundance from now until the end of the season.
03:06The manager also thanked fans for helping to create an atmosphere on the pitch that pushed
03:10players' performance throughout the match.
03:13And we can hear from the Torquay manager, you might recognise him, it's Neil Warnock.
03:19Disappointing really, the result.
03:20I thought the lads give everything.
03:22I have no complaints about the effort.
03:24We just, you know, they were better than us on the day.
03:27One or two things went against us as well and you've just got to get on with it really.
03:31But I can't be disappointed with the effort.
03:34They give everything.
03:35It just wasn't enough on the day.
03:37What can you tell us about how you changed the team in terms of formation and personnel?
03:41Not really.
03:41We haven't got much choice at the minute.
03:43We only had three outfield players.
03:45They were all forwards.
03:46So we haven't got a lot of choice.
03:49I can't see anybody being back for Tuesday either.
03:52So we're on a threadbare at the minute.
03:54So it's quite easy picking a team.
03:56And now we've got a sending off.
03:59I mean, what did you think of the goals that we can see today?
04:02Absolutely terrible.
04:04I felt, you know, I mean, the lads were good and all.
04:07The fans were good and all, weren't they?
04:08You know, they could see that they were giving everything.
04:12Amazing to see a legend like Neil Warnock at the Epps Fleets Stadium.
04:16And finally now, Broadstairs Paralympian James Barnes-Miller placed fourth in the snowboarding
04:21upper-limb tournament in Cortina's Winter Olympics.
04:24This marks his last Paralympics, ending at the quarterfinal stage on Sunday.
04:29The Kent-based athlete secured a strong position in the seating after placing fifth with a
04:34fastest time of 52.17 seconds.
04:37Though in third place, Barnes-Miller is said to have lost his grip, stumbled and made strong
04:41efforts to regain momentum, but still finished last, more than seven seconds behind the first-placed winner.
04:48Now let's take a look at all your football results from across the county.
04:54Hello and welcome to this week's football round-up.
04:57For today's fixture, Epps Fleets play host to Torquay.
05:00Now both of these are looking to work their way higher up into those playoff positions.
05:04Torquay are being led by former Leeds Crystal Palace and QPR manager Neil Warnock, who's taken
05:08over as interim after the departure of Paul Watton.
05:11The goals are currently struggling with an injury crisis and by Warnock's own admission,
05:16only have three strikers and a keeper on their bench, while the fleet have had mixed form,
05:20a loss and three draws, making up their last four.
05:24And 30 minutes from kick-off, Epps Fleets have been firing one after another.
05:28Charlie Seaman crosses over, not cleared very well, and Dominic Samuel puts it into the net.
05:32The deadlock is broken, a good bit of team play, and some poor defending form from Torquay
05:37gets the game going.
05:39Samuel adds goal number 19 to his tally, as keeper James Heyman is left stranded.
05:44Ben Coker hoofs it into the box, bit of a scuffle, and on a plate for Kwesi Appiah.
05:49It couldn't be any easier.
05:51More of that penneke defending from Torquay, you have to clear those.
05:55Fleet take possession, Jake Hessenthala sent it up, and oh, Matthew Worthington slid in there.
06:00A risky challenge, and it is a straight red for Worthington.
06:04Things couldn't get any worse for the goals right now.
06:07Never mind, it absolutely can.
06:09Coker's running through again, pulls it back and forth over to Appiah.
06:11Hammond stops it, falls to Marcus Wiley.
06:14Three goals to none.
06:15The Gillingham Loney scores his first as a red.
06:18Warnock's side has fallen to the fleet, going down to sixth.
06:22While for the Reds, it's a good boost to their promotion hopes.
06:26Now to the rest of the National League South, and Maidstone drop points on the road to Maidenhead,
06:30and it was the same story for Dover.
06:32Receiving two goals, only scoring one on a trip to Hampton and Richmond Borough,
06:36while Tunbridge Angels manage a 1-0 win against Worthing.
06:39Coming up, Ebsfleet will head along the coast to face off against Eastbourne.
06:43The Stones will host Dagenham, and the Angels faced over in a Kent derby.
06:47Now up to League Two, and it was a difficult one for Gilles fans,
06:50as a strike in the 91st minute from defender Sean Rooney meant the Gilles only took a point from the
06:55clash.
06:55With their promotion hopes now over, and being too far up to likely fall out of the league,
06:59it was a fixture with only pride on the line.
07:02The Gilles will next head up to Stadium MK to face off against the Dons.
07:05Now down to the Itzmian League Premier, and after suffering a rare loss to Biliriki last week,
07:11they're going back to winning ways, firing two past Potter's Bar, and going 12 points clear at the top.
07:17Dartford suffered a huge hit to their playoff hopes with a home loss to Wingate and Finchley,
07:21while the Chats cemented themselves in the top four with a 3-0 thrashing of YouTube's own Hashtag United,
07:27and Ramsgate did the same to Chess Hunt.
07:29Coming up, Folkestone will host Dartford, who play them after their mid-week clash with Chess Hunt,
07:34who are looking to copy the Rams with that scoreline,
07:36while Chatham will host Canvey Island at the Bowville Stadium,
07:39and Ramsgate fight with Burgess Hill for a spot in the playoff zone.
07:42And that's all for this week's Football Roundup.
07:46Now, it was a difficult result to swallow for Gilles fans at the weekend,
07:50going 1-0 up late in the second half, only to fall at the last hurdle,
07:54conceding and losing two points in the process.
07:57But at this stage in the season, promotion is impossible, relegation extremely unlikely,
08:02so the only thing to play for is pride.
08:04I was joined earlier by our student journalist and resident Gilles fan, Tom Fuligar,
08:08to discuss the scoreline.
08:10Thanks so much for joining us, Tom.
08:12First of all, let's talk through the start of that match.
08:14What were the feelings going into this clash against Fleetwood at home?
08:17Well, I thought, I looked at the line-up and thought,
08:20we're not going to win this one.
08:22I saw Shad Ogi at the back, despite not featuring at all in the last couple of months.
08:29Ewan Williams starting in place of, I guess, Dak, because Dak wasn't in the squad,
08:33and I thought, well, he's going to have big boots to fill,
08:35and I don't think he offered the same as he did.
08:39And it was nice to see Seb Palmer-Holden and Ronan Howe up front.
08:42I think they both worked hard, Seb with a good goal.
08:44But, yeah, it was just a game that I just knew we weren't going to get anything out of, really.
08:50I see.
08:50And talk to me about that Seb Palmer-Holden goal.
08:52What were your thoughts?
08:53Was it a good strike?
08:54Yeah, I mean, Max Clark, hoofball actually worked for the first time in 100 tries.
09:00But, yeah, Seb didn't take it down very well initially, but actually the finish was great.
09:05I think he's a good finisher, and, yeah, it was a lovely finish.
09:08Brilliant.
09:09And tell me, what did you make of Jake Turner's performance between the sticks?
09:12I thought he was our best player.
09:13I think that says everything you need to know about the team at the moment.
09:16Some really good reflexes.
09:17An early one, first of all, I think it came off Smith, and he saved really well.
09:21And there was also a tap-in that he should have scored.
09:24But, yeah, he's really quick at the near post to save it, and he tipped a free kick really well
09:29as well.
09:29That was a good save, yeah.
09:30Yeah, really good performance for him.
09:32Absolutely.
09:33And there were a lot of shots coming, you know, towards the goal from Fleetwood.
09:37So we didn't really dominate much.
09:39Tell me about that.
09:40Yeah, we just didn't have enough chances.
09:42They were all over our second half.
09:44I thought we didn't deserve to win it.
09:47I didn't even think we deserved to have a draw, really.
09:49I think they deserved to win.
09:50I think they showed the fight, and we didn't.
09:52There's no adaptation.
09:55There's no nothing.
09:56We just want to just hoof it and just hope for the best.
09:59And, you know, we haven't got a lot of quality coming off the bench.
10:03You know, you've got people like Andrews coming on.
10:05They're just not any better than what we've got.
10:10You know, we've got Roe.
10:11You know, he's okay.
10:12A little bit of something.
10:13A couple of games here and there.
10:15But we've got, you know, I know we're hindered a lot by the injuries,
10:19but, yeah, it's just not good enough.
10:21Fair enough.
10:22And tell me about their goal.
10:23I think you described it as a free header.
10:25Was there really not great communication among that back line?
10:28Just Sunday League stuff, really.
10:30There's three of them just in the same spot, just ball watching.
10:34They're all, like, looking around to complain and all they should be complaining about is themselves
10:38because they're rooted to the spot.
10:40It's a free header.
10:41It's absolutely ridiculous for me.
10:43They should be communicating.
10:44I think it was Smith, Ogie, even Serena, I think, was in the mix.
10:48And, yeah, just got to be more airily dominant.
10:51They're just not, you know, this is why we're struggling at corners because we're just not,
10:56we're not winning the second ball.
10:57We're not winning the first one.
11:00But just not physical enough as well.
11:02Absolutely.
11:03And tell me a bit about kind of the expectations now because Gillingham aren't going to be able
11:07to get into these promotion places.
11:09They aren't likely to be relegated at this stage in this season.
11:12So do you think these kind of games are just almost like a litmus test for the squad at the
11:15minute?
11:15Tell me about that kind of atmosphere.
11:17Yeah, I said, like, last time out, I think it's more of a pride thing.
11:20They've got to at least play for a bit of, you know, the fans that have actually paid to be
11:25there
11:25because we have, you know, despite the bad performances, we're still turning out.
11:29You know, a lot of people would be giving up at this point.
11:32You know, it's the same thing as it is last season.
11:34And I think it's getting a lot of people down.
11:36There's no change.
11:40Yeah, nothing will change.
11:41You know, nothing will change.
11:42I think a lot of people are hoping to have the playoffs in our mind to at least get a
11:47bit of fight back in it.
11:47But they just can't be bothered.
11:49That's what it seems like.
11:52Now we've reached halftime, so it's time for a short break.
11:55But we'll have more of Kent's sporting news after this short break.
15:14Hello and welcome back to Invicta Sport live here on KMTV.
15:18Now a boxing legend has made his way to a food bank to support their Easter campaign to feed struggling
15:24families over the holidays.
15:26Barry McGuigan, the Canterbury Food Bank's holiday hunger campaign, provides meals for families who can't access free meals during the
15:32Easter half term.
15:33The former featherweight champion says it feels natural.
15:36The former featherweight champion says it feels natural to give back to those who are struggling, as our community reporter
15:39Henry Luck found out.
15:40The Canterbury Food Bank, the Canterbury Food Bank has just gotten a powerful ally in its corner.
15:48Former featherweight champion, former featherweight champion, has come down to launch the food bank's Easter holiday hunger campaign, from helping
16:00to pack parcels to signing boxing gloves to be auctioned.
16:05But I came from a family of a family of a professional musician.
16:09My father was a professional musician. We actually ran a grocery shop and I knew many families that did struggle.
16:16And, you know, mum would help out when she could and, you know, we never made a lot of profit,
16:22but mum was always sure to help families that needed help and support.
16:26And they would not pay the bills for long times because mum was very lenient and just making sure that
16:33they got that support.
16:35So this feels like a natural thing to get involved in.
16:39The scheme helps provide food for families struggling to feed their children over the holidays, when schools close and free
16:49school meals are not provided.
16:51The movement is more important than ever because of current world events.
16:58It's been difficult for years. We were hoping this year we might get our numbers down.
17:02They've gone up exponentially since Covid really.
17:05Last year we distributed enough food to make 135,000 meals.
17:10That's about 15,000 emergency parcels in the Canterbury district alone.
17:14This year we're up again and we were hoping there's a few governmental changes in April that might bring the
17:22numbers down.
17:22But what you said about the war is absolutely right. It's going to put pressure on prices again.
17:27As well as containing food for the family, these Easter parcels also have a letter addressed to the parents and
17:36guardians telling them how they can reach out to Food Bank Canterbury if they need help over the holidays.
17:45With the help of a boxing legend, this year's Easter campaign is sure to be a knockout.
17:54Henry Luck for CamTV in Whitstable.
18:00Now it's time to remind you you can keep up to date with all the latest sports news, interviews and
18:04features from here on Invicta Sport by heading to our website camtv.co.uk and clicking on the sports tab.
18:10There you'll see videos like this one about a man aiming to break a world record by running a marathon
18:15and knitting a scarf at the same time.
18:18Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's not Superman but it does come pretty close.
18:25Ashford resident Simon Fannin is out to break records at the London Marathon this year.
18:32Now it's a sunny half term morning but there's no rest for Simon who's still continuing to train, knitting in
18:39hand as part of his nine month plan that he started last summer.
18:42So I'm completing the London Marathon in April. It was initially going to be just a normal completion of the
18:50run and then, yeah I'm knitting the longest scarf while running a marathon.
18:56Morning, almost seven o'clock. I've got my knitting.
18:58And he's documenting his journey on his social media.
19:01He's training cats and dogs.
19:03The army veteran might be used to running long distances and his appearance on the game of wool might ensure
19:09he won't get his needles in a twist.
19:11But putting them together is a new challenge in aid of a cause close to his heart.
19:17So the two causes I'm running for, Huntington's disease association which is an amazing charity who help out people with
19:23Huntington's disease which is a rare neurological condition.
19:27My mum's got Huntington's disease so that's why I know about the charity and they do really good outreach work
19:33for people.
19:33A real charity which is a charity which is based around mental health for veterans and frontline services and they
19:41do that through movement.
19:42The previous record holder of the longest scarf made during a marathon is David Babcock who knitted a 3.7
19:50metre garment whilst running at the Kansas City Marathon in 2013.
19:56Knitting is obviously, for me, I've been doing it for 10 years so it's quite easy.
20:01And running as well is quite easy but when you mix the two, the things I didn't expect were you've
20:06got to keep your upper body really still.
20:08So you can't drive with your arms and quite a lot of power when you're running is taken from your
20:13upper body.
20:14So because you've got to keep that really still, it's really like all legs basically.
20:20While he might have his work cut out, if his training in Victoria Park has anything to go by, he
20:26certainly proved that knitters aren't quitters.
20:29Megan Shaw for KNTV in Ashford.
20:33Now many people around the world are observing Ramadan and that's no different here in Kent.
20:38But for athletes, it can be difficult to balance Ramadan with sporting commitments.
20:43I spoke with Maidstone United striker Mohamedou Fahl on Kent Tonight about his experiences while fasting, while training and some
20:50of the negative reactions other footballers have faced.
20:54First of all, can you tell me all about how observing Ramadan changes the daily schedule of a footballer?
21:04Well, it changes it quite a bit.
21:09I'd probably say a lot of your morning routine is what is changed.
21:14Instead of probably, you know, getting a little lying, you are having to wake up a little bit earlier, depending
21:22on what time cutting the fast is.
21:24So right now it's about 5.20, 5.30.
21:29So it would require me waking up maybe 30 minutes to an hour before to make sure that, you know,
21:36I get the appropriate fluids, the appropriate food on board.
21:40And then after that, we can pray and then start fasting.
21:44And can you tell me a bit about how Ramadan and how fasting impacts you as a football player?
21:50Obviously, you're a striker, especially your physical game.
21:53Yeah, it's tough for me, especially the 3pm kickoffs, they are a bit hard.
21:58You know, before we've even started the game, when we're going out to warm up, I'm already thirsty, you know,
22:04throat is dry.
22:06But, you know, it's good because, you know, you build your mentality as well, you know, during this time as
22:15well.
22:15So, yeah, no, it's tough, but the mental rewards of doing it and the spiritual gains of it as well
22:23are definitely rewarding, especially after Ramadan finishes.
22:27And you've played for quite a few different clubs, Dulwich, Hamlet, Enfield, now Maidstone United.
22:33Throughout your career, have clubs always been understanding of the significance of Ramadan, especially, you know, from when you were
22:39a young player all the way to now?
22:43Not so much at Dulwich, Hamlet, only because the reason I can't remember fasting while I was there anyway.
22:49But Enfield, they were understanding, you know, they didn't take me fasting for weakness.
22:58In fact, they saw it as strength and it's the same at Maidstone.
23:02You know, it hasn't stopped them from playing me or treating me any different.
23:07If anything, they make sure that, you know, they're quite accommodating and they make sure that anything that I need
23:13personally,
23:13whether it's on the pitch, off the pitch, anything to make my life easier during Ramadan, they make sure that
23:19it's done.
23:24Now, a Canterbury therapy centre supporting people with multiple sclerosis, commonly referred to as MS, says it can't survive without
23:30community fundraising.
23:32One member told us she believed her diagnosis was a death sentence until she found help there.
23:37Now, a local golf club has raised thousands of pounds to keep that support going.
23:41Kerry King went down to the therapy centre to find out more.
23:44This was my, this saved me when I was first diagnosed with MS because I thought it was going to
23:49be a death sentence.
23:50If I hadn't had the centre to come to, I would have had nowhere.
23:55MS is a neurological condition affecting the brain and spinal cord.
24:03Around 130,000 people in the UK are living with MS and an estimated 7,000 are diagnosed every year.
24:11It can cause extreme fatigue, loss of mobility, vision problems and chronic pain.
24:17For many in Kent, the difference between isolation and support is the Kent Neurotherapy Centre in Canterbury,
24:25which is an independent registered charity providing oxygen therapy, physiotherapy, specialist exercise and emotional support.
24:33The donations that we receive from our local community are absolutely vital for allowing us to continue running the Neurotherapy
24:41Centre.
24:42Members say it gives them strength physically and mentally.
24:46It actually changed my life for the better because I knew what was wrong with me.
24:50I met people that also knew what it was like to live with MS.
24:53But this centre receives no ongoing statutory funding from the NHS or central government.
25:00It's survived on donations, memberships, grants and fundraising.
25:05Without them, the fundraising manager says it simply could not stay open.
25:10So as a centre we have to raise £800,000 a year and the donations that we are able to
25:16get from local sports groups
25:17is a really great way of us bringing in some of that additional funding
25:21and the generosity that we find from those groups is just absolutely fantastic
25:26and it really does make a difference of the day-to-day lives of our members here.
25:31This week, volunteers organised a coffee open day, homemade cakes, a charity shop and fundraising activities
25:39filling the centre with supporters.
25:41And alongside that effort, Hyde Golf Club raised £4,000 through charity events
25:47presenting the cheque during the open day.
25:50Morning Nancy. It's with great privilege to represent Hyde Golf Club in 2025
25:56to hand over this cheque for £4,000 to the Kent Neurotherapy Centre.
26:01Please accept it on our behalf. Thank you very much.
26:05APPLAUSE
26:07For some, it's therapy. For others, it's friendship.
26:11For Arlene, it was hope when she thought she had none.
26:14And without donations like these, that lifeline would be at risk.
26:19Kerry King, KMTV, Canterbury.
26:23And that marks full time on today's episode of Invicta Sport.
