00:00Similar thing with Hayden Deegan several years ago, so it's not a surprise for this Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha
00:06team to do that.
00:07But man, he looked very impressive in that heat race and has all day.
00:12There's Davies, there's Hamaker with the two top gate picks after the heat race wins.
00:16Davies has looked incredible on this track, but Pierce Brown had the best qualifying time.
00:22And Hamaker, he's seasoned in these championship fights.
00:25You got Shimoda back in action. So much to talk about, but the talk is over because the Rebs are
00:31up.
00:33Gates down.
00:36Shimoda again. Oh, just like the heat, Shimoda hole shots.
00:41The 37 of Davies goes down. He was fighting for that position with Seth Hamaker.
00:47They were playing a game of chicken.
00:50And Davies nowhere to be found.
00:52As he's laying in that first corner. There he is. And so is Nate Thrasher.
00:56Oh, Dudney.
00:58Dudney.
00:58Bryce Shelley.
00:59Wow, an instant shakeup. Pierce Brown is second.
01:03Next guy in line from a speed basis that I took from the eye test in the heat races was
01:09Pierce Brown.
01:10Remember, he came from a long ways back.
01:12And before he got hurt last year in that main event, man, was he quick.
01:16Here's a replay. And it just bottles up right here.
01:20But it starts with these guys. Cody Schock, Seth Hamaker, and Cole Davies fighting for that number one position.
01:29Who is going to break the latest and just run out of room?
01:35Unbelievable. The Hamaker managed to not go down there and emerge in fourth.
01:41Oh, man. So that's the final count. Welton down in that first turn drive.
01:44And he looks like he's done.
01:46Well, and you think about Joe, okay?
01:48And why do you come back?
01:50People are probably saying, man, he's hurt.
01:53The doctor said he was good to go.
01:54He was cleared.
01:55He's not 100%, but at least just come here and maximize the night.
02:00See what happens.
02:01Put yourself in a position and see what this race and how it will unfold and look at.
02:08You could draw this script up any better, Wil.
02:11I think he might be surprising himself right now, too, Ricky,
02:14because he said to me several times earlier on today,
02:17he didn't really know how this was going to go.
02:19All that he knew is that he was physically ready.
02:22And a lot of people were surprised that you said he was back so soon.
02:25He said actually the 12-week mark, which the doctors had originally told him, is right now.
02:30So he said he did do a lot of training, and he's somewhat ahead of schedule,
02:34but really this is right on the mark to get back to racing.
02:37And Doc G, his physiotherapist, told me he hasn't seen anybody work as hard as Joe did to get back.
02:43He said he's been doing everything.
02:46Four days a week there at his office, all the training in the gym.
02:49He said if he can't ride a bike right now, well, nobody can.
02:53Wow, he worked hard in his rehab phase with his trainer, Joe.
03:00And, man, when we saw him at some of the West Coast.
03:04Oh, no.
03:05Uh-oh.
03:05Jalik Swole.
03:06Where is this at?
03:08Is it after the whoops, maybe?
03:12Yeah, it looks like it.
03:14Ah, bummer to hear that for Jalik.
03:17Look at Dax Benick starting to make some moves.
03:21Now, Benick was actually at the podium at the opener the last two years,
03:24but those are also the only podiums that he has in his career.
03:27He is Mr. Round 1, and he's on the charge right now.
03:30Now, that white rock star Husqvarna, and this is where Swole is down.
03:35He looks to be okay at least getting back up.
03:37Yeah, they're top of your screen.
03:38He's jumping through the whoops.
03:40He overjumps that combination.
03:42Oh, and I think that Simonson was going, getting a little out of control,
03:47and maybe he had to pull an audible and just loses it.
03:52Oh, man, he was in a great spot, too.
03:54Great position.
03:55Looked like he was stuck under the bike, maybe knocked the breath out of himself.
04:00But going back to Benick, I mean, this guy has a ton of talent.
04:03I was listening to what the team manager of the rock star Husky team,
04:06Nate Ramsey, was saying, like, he has a lot of potential.
04:10He just needs to put in some good rides here, believe in himself,
04:13and this is a great start to that process.
04:16He is all over Pierce Brown right now.
04:19Shimoda, though, has opened it up.
04:20Oh, tripling in is Benick.
04:22He's got some lines out here.
04:24See if he can make some moves.
04:25JT.
04:26Well, you see, Benick, you mentioned there he had a podium last year,
04:28but look at Pierce Brown.
04:29Think about this, Weech.
04:312024, he wins that Las Vegas SMX World Championship finale,
04:35and we know, hey, he can finally do it.
04:37You go into 2025, he's leading the Tampa round until he goes down.
04:42Big injury there.
04:43They're battling with Shimoda here for the lead.
04:45Every time we see Pierce Brown race lately, he's out front, Weech.
04:50And that's the case right now.
04:52He makes the move, JT, on Shimoda.
04:53Shimoda tried to come back.
04:55And here's the difference.
04:56There's basically three races where we've ever seen Pierce Brown get good starts.
05:01The win two years ago, the opener last year when he crashed while leading,
05:06and now, and he's got the lead.
05:07Here's what happened to Shimoda, though, that allowed Brown to get him.
05:12Let's see.
05:14Oh, that's good.
05:15Oh, he's not able to double the finish line.
05:19That's weird.
05:21Not sure how that happened.
05:23Had a three-second lead, and it's gone in a flash.
05:26And now Benick is challenging him.
05:28Oh, yeah, he had some breathing room,
05:30and now he's in an area where he's got guys all around him.
05:33Can't ride quite as relaxed.
05:35Maybe he has to ride a little defensive, block the inside lines.
05:40Much different situation for Joe.
05:42But listen, man, Joe's composure when he rides, I feel, is so cool and mellow
05:48that this isn't going to phase him.
05:51He's got Hammocker fourth, and now starting to make some noise.
05:54He has joined this party on the Green Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki.
05:58He's caught Benick.
05:58Benick is all over Shimoda.
06:00Yeah, Benick's been doing a great job in that long rhythm lane right there,
06:04going triple, triple, quad.
06:07Jalik Smallwood now here is out of this race,
06:10and shout-out Devin Simonson of the Club of X Yamaha.
06:14Fifth place right now.
06:15That'd be a clear career best by far,
06:18but only about six minutes into this main.
06:22Long way to go.
06:23And it looks like Shimoda starting to close back in on Brown here, R.C.
06:28He is gaining that composure, regaining the composure, I should say.
06:37Simonson, man.
06:38I was watching him in qualifying practice today.
06:41Again, I go back to the Chad Reed scenario.
06:44Club MX bringing him on board.
06:46This is another rider that could really learn from the knowledge of a guy like Chad Reed.
06:52He'd take you from a fifth-place guy to a third-place guy,
06:56or if Bikester's an eighth-place guy to a fifth-place guy.
07:00Little mistake there with Simonson, but still in a solid position.
07:04That is true.
07:04Adams getting by him.
07:06Simonson's career best is eighth.
07:08Shimoda is all over Brown for the lead.
07:12Unbelievable both these riders to come back.
07:14Brown basically did not race at all last year after crashing out of the opener.
07:18Shimoda, we chronicled, he's only three weeks back on the bike, and they are 1-2.
07:23Man, the irony of this.
07:25Both guys coming in.
07:27I mean, Pierce, we've told his story and the injury he had last year.
07:30I think he was going to win that opening round in Tampa.
07:33And now back, leading this race, Joe coming back from a brutal injury in the offseason,
07:39and here they are.
07:42Into the woods.
07:46Pulled a little gap on Benick, who's also pulled a gap on Hamaker.
07:50I really like that jumping line through the woods.
07:53I mean, I just feel like it's so much easier to go straighter through there,
07:57maintain a consistent line, and do lap after lap.
08:00You don't have to hold on quite as tight.
08:02Shimoda's got a line.
08:03Let's see how this rhythm works.
08:06Yeah, that inside probably doesn't have the advantage,
08:10or not as close for these guys on the 250,
08:14because they don't have the horsepower to come out of that inside
08:17and go over the tabletop like that.
08:19So that outside probably is primarily faster.
08:23Oh, Brown made a mistake out of that corner.
08:25That allows Shimoda to get back to him halfway through this main event.
08:28Stock up Monster Energy drinks at Quick Trip.
08:31And as they make mistakes, Benick closes back in.
08:36But you see how Brown going side to side like that.
08:42That just takes extra strength to hold that motorcycle straight.
08:45And you watch Joe just jumping through there,
08:47like I was telling you guys, jumping through there.
08:49Nice and smooth and perfect on a consistent level.
08:54Just knocking it down lap after lap.
08:57He switched back to the outside of this rhythm.
08:59Not going to try that inside any longer.
09:01Does he have another spot picked out?
09:03Wow, he's all over him.
09:05It's going to be interesting.
09:06If he's able to stay right on Pierce right now
09:08when they get to the whoops section.
09:12Bottom box is Davies after the first turn crash.
09:15Now up to seven.
09:16Just got around Cullen Park challenging Simonson.
09:20Great comeback for the 37.
09:24As Brown tries to hold off Shimoda.
09:27Doing a great job.
09:29Showing good composure here.
09:31He's got a lot of pressure from Joe.
09:34But when I watch Pierce,
09:36it doesn't look like he's overriding a motorcycle
09:38and putting himself in a position
09:40to where he's uncomfortable.
09:41And that's what you have to have.
09:44Benick doing a great job as well, man.
09:47Hammacher close behind, lurking for that podium spot.
09:55Joe, I'll be back on a supercross track last week,
09:59then rode two days this week.
10:01Yeah, think of that.
10:02He's only been on the bike two weeks.
10:05Incredible.
10:05Yeah.
10:06Will.
10:08Guys, I was checking in with the team over at Monster Energy Star Race at Yamaha
10:13and just speaking to the 250 team manager there, Jenson Hiller,
10:16specifically about Pierce Brown and improvements that have been made
10:19because we can't hide from the fact that we have seen Pierce on the ground a lot of times
10:24and that's been his undoing, as we just said last year as well.
10:27And he said that has changed dramatically.
10:30They've looked at his technique going into the turns,
10:33put a little bit of, a few changes into the motorcycle to help him out as well.
10:37And he said that is where he would lose the front end,
10:39just his body position on the bike and then the front end would tuck
10:42and they would see it during the week in practice.
10:44They said we'd see dirt on the side of his shirt and we knew he went down again.
10:48He said, I have not seen that recently.
10:50So what we see during the week, if that translates into the weekend,
10:53he's able to fix this lifelong habit,
10:55so we're going to see a different Pierce Brown.
10:58Oh, we sure are right now, Weege.
11:01Oh, we better keep the composure because Shimoda's right there, RC.
11:05I mean, keeping the absolute pressure on Pierce Brown.
11:09And I think the biggest thing for Joe right here is, I mean, this is a win in my books.
11:14And probably if you asked him, I bet you he wasn't anticipating to be where he is right now.
11:19But if he can just stay cool right now
11:24and let it play out.
11:26Man, this is an absolutely incredible ride for this young man.
11:32Don't get caught in the hype.
11:33Ooh, nice line by Pierce.
11:36Pivoting there in that corner, double-double, using the outside, not going to the inside.
11:41And by doing that, when you watch that, look at the gap that he made.
11:44And the reason he was able to do that is because you kept momentum around the outside of the corners
11:49because those insides are getting very slick.
11:51Oh, I was wondering, is that a little bit of a fresher piece of real estate?
11:55Wow.
11:56Fewer guys have gone through there.
11:57Oh, this is Davies catching Drew Adams.
12:00Adams aiming for his own career best in fifth.
12:03But there's that big quad from Davies.
12:05And you know he's got whoop speed as well.
12:08This would be a miraculous comeback.
12:10Look at this.
12:11Wow.
12:11Wow, we talked about it earlier in the show, the whoop speed that this young gentleman has.
12:18I mean, the position and the posture on his motorcycle, the whoop entry speed that he has is absolutely incredible.
12:27And, man, he just blew by Drew Adams.
12:31Now, the next guy in front of him is Hammacher.
12:36He's, what, seven seconds behind him, so he's got a lot of work.
12:40It's going to be tough for him to catch up to Hammacher.
12:44Up front, clock still ticking.
12:46Can Pierce Brown get it done?
12:49Has not won a Supercross before.
12:51Got that SMX finale win two years ago.
12:54Ooh, Benick's all over Joe right now.
12:59What a race.
13:01Benick, you're not kidding.
13:03Yeah.
13:03Right in it.
13:04Mr. Round 1 got those two Round 1 podiums the last two years.
13:08And I have a lot of hope for Dax and Benick this year.
13:11The reason that I say that, he's going back to a bike that he spent a lot of time on
13:17throughout his younger career as an amateur.
13:20Now working with Nate Ramsey, who is a fantastic team manager.
13:24And just the vibe over there.
13:26I think we're going to see a lot of great things out of Daxton this year.
13:29Talk to Benick about getting back on that Austrian bike.
13:32He said it's similar but a lot different.
13:34He was very happy with the progress.
13:36He was with the Yamaha team for two years.
13:38And the bike's gotten a lot better since then.
13:40And he's right at it.
13:41Look at the whoop speed on the left-hand side, JT.
13:45Davies just absolutely crushing the field in the whoops.
13:48Yeah.
13:48And he's going all the way back right.
13:51We talked about that track report.
13:52How are you going to attack those whoops?
13:54And these guys at the front, they're all over the map.
13:56You know, Shimoda has gone to jumping.
13:58Pierce is still trying to jump.
13:59And Cole Davies is going tight in that berm.
14:02And then going all the way right in the fresh line.
14:04You can see that paying off.
14:05Well, coming down to the wire here.
14:07Look at all the lappers.
14:09They are going to play a part in this.
14:11There's Joe going to the outside using that momentum.
14:14But it's going to be key for a guy like Pierce Brown to make sure that he can time his
14:19passes by these lappers as best as he can so he doesn't lose time.
14:24Generally, you lose time when you come up to these lappers.
14:28You lose more time if you're the leader because they're not anticipating you coming.
14:32So, just like right here.
14:34Oh, boy.
14:34Slows him out.
14:35Look at the gap that he uses.
14:37He's in the thick of it now.
14:38And here's Shimoda.
14:42That's what I'm talking about.
14:43Joe going to the inside.
14:45I thought he was going to dive there and make a move for the win.
14:49He's diving to the inside.
14:50Will he revive the slide?
14:52No.
14:52He almost went to the berm to get Brown.
14:55But it's going to backfire.
14:56Yeah, he messed himself up right there.
14:58Not ideal what Joe did.
15:00But I appreciate that effort.
15:01The reason, if he was able to make that move, it really would have worked out well.
15:06But he ends up losing time by not being able to jump onto that tabletop.
15:10Is that the breathing room that Pierce Brown needed?
15:13It just might be.
15:14But again, remember what I talked about?
15:16Passing these lappers in good spots.
15:20Pierce is really going to have to race ahead.
15:23Make sure he makes the moves at the perfect time so he doesn't get caught up and lose more ground.
15:28He's going to miss the white flag, RC.
15:30Oh, man.
15:31He's through the finish, right?
15:33Yeah.
15:34Now, he missed it by one second.
15:37There's two to go now.
15:38It could have been white flag.
15:40Joe looking over his shoulder.
15:42Seeing where Bennett is.
15:45Man, what a ride by this guy.
15:47Only been on the bike two weeks, right?
15:49Supercross just a couple times.
15:51Yeah.
15:52Again, no surprise, though, at the same time.
15:55Joe is somewhat a veteran of this class.
15:57Has a ton of experience.
16:00But what can you say about Pierce Brown?
16:04The all-time question, if he can improve the starts, could he win?
16:07He fixed it last year.
16:08He got out front of the opener.
16:10It looked like he might have won.
16:11Then he crashed.
16:12And it ended his season.
16:14One year later, he's back in the same position.
16:17This time, headed toward the white flag.
16:20And he wants to finish it.
16:22What a run through the whoops right there.
16:24I feel like Pierce and his teammate Cole Davies really making the blitzing through the whoops work out to their
16:34benefit.
16:34One more lap.
16:35And what an emotional win this would be if he's able to hold on for another three-quarters of a
16:40lap.
16:42Wow.
16:43Great job.
16:43One year later would be the ultimate reset for the young man from Sambi, Utah.
16:51Four career podiums.
16:53No wins in Supercross.
16:55The first win is always big.
16:58But it is going to be huge considering the road he took to get here.
17:05Had it ripped away 365 days ago.
17:09Shimoda's close.
17:11Benick's close.
17:12Not close enough.
17:13Welcome back, Pierce Brown.
17:15You're a winner in Supercross.
17:22And a heck of a story for all these guys.
17:26Shimoda back to take the podium.
17:28And Benick once again on the box in the opener.
17:36What a win by this guy.
17:39And the journey.
17:46Wow.
17:52Man.
17:53We mentioned the crash last year.
17:55Look at how brutal this is.
17:56This is leading last year's East Opener.
18:00Oh.
18:01Yeah, it was.
18:03It was.
18:04It was absolutely horrible.
18:07And just to think of what he was able to do tonight compared to where he was on the picture
18:13on your screen.
