The Board of Police Commissioners voted unanimously to suspend two Detroit Police officers without pay for 30 days. They are accused of contacting U.S. Border Patrol during separate traffic stops, which goes against DPD policy and resulted in two people being detained by federal agents.

Police Chief Todd Bettison had previously said he planned to fire the two officers, but says he is satisfied with the board's decision and will no longer pursue their termination.

00:00Last night, the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners took an extraordinary step to unanimously vote to suspend without pay for
00:0930 days the two DPD officers who violated long-standing departmental policy.
00:16I'll say this. Policies are meant to provide structure and limits for officers to protect them and citizens alike.
00:26When policies are not followed, whether in this matter or DPD's non-pursuit policy, it puts the community at risk.
00:35I support the actions of the Board of Police Commissioners as the ultimate discipline of these officers.
00:40The Board has the opportunity to review all the video and consider all the facts and circumstances of their decision.
00:47The role of the Board of Police Commissioners is to serve as an oversight body and to be a check
00:54and balance for the police department, and I fully respect its role.
00:59Therefore, I am satisfied with the Board's decision, and I will not be pursuing termination of these two officers.
01:07This incident should make it clear, however, that I, as chief, will continue to vigorously enforce the DPD policies.
01:17It's important for our officers, whether it's a pursuit policy or another policy or any organization, when it comes to
01:24our policies.
01:25Our officers can't pick and choose, per se, which policy, and so we all have to walk that fine line
01:31and follow the rules policies of our organization.
01:33So it's always areas where we can look to tweak, improve, and revise current policy, but as the policy stands,
01:42we have to follow those policies.
