00:00That quick hop back into your car while pumping gas in cold weather could spark a fire.
00:04In dry winter air, static electricity builds up quickly, especially with heavy clothing.
00:10When you step back out and grab the nozzle again, that small shock you sometimes feel
00:14can ignite gasoline vapors which are highly flammable.
00:17Gas station fires are rare, but static-related incidents have happened and can cause serious injuries.
00:23To reduce the risk, stay outside your vehicle until fueling is finished.
00:27If you must get back in, touch a bare metal part of your car away from the pump before
00:32grabbing the nozzle again to safely discharge static.
