00:00You're definitely not alone.
00:02Are you trying to scare me?
00:08Yes.
00:11On this episode of Expedition X...
00:15Here's the building!
00:15This is so weird.
00:17My team continues their investigation into the terrors of Trinidad.
00:22Is Obia capable of manifesting something like a Sukunya?
00:26Yes. I could do it. And these evil spirits could kill you.
00:31A group of high school girls report being possessed by demons.
00:35The last thing I remember was a black figure with red eyes hovering over me.
00:41They told me I tried to jump off the second floor balcony.
00:45Leading Heather and Phil to investigate the island's secretive and mysterious religion.
00:50Oh my God, look at this, jawbone.
00:52Are you serious?
00:53And a candle.
00:54Oh my God.
00:54As they confront the curses of the Caribbean.
01:06So far, my team's trip to Trinidad has revealed a very bright culture.
01:11Welcome to Trinidad!
01:13With a very dark past.
01:15This plantation had the most weapon and mutilation in the whole of Trinidad.
01:21Phil and Heather investigated stunning claims of unique evil entities.
01:26Like the sinister, childlike Duens.
01:29She noticed something short run across.
01:31Like a child with no face.
01:33His foot was turned backwards.
01:36Look at that.
01:38That looks like a child's footprint.
01:40And the soul-sucking Sukunyas.
01:43The Sukunya is an old Obia woman who made a pact with the devil.
01:50Are you a Sukunya?
01:54The activity led them to one of the deadliest islands in all of the Caribbean.
01:59That's not creepy at all.
02:00Oh my God.
02:02Shaka Shakaare.
02:03An abandoned leper colony, where the flora and fauna are even more frightening than the ghosts.
02:09Wait, wait.
02:10This is the Manganeal tree.
02:12The death tree.
02:13Everything about this thing is toxic.
02:14If you eat that fruit, you die.
02:16If you burn its wood, the smoke will blind you.
02:19Even though I'm a skeptic, there is something evil, very evil in that place.
02:26When they fell asleep, something was choking them.
02:30They could physically feel a hand around their neck.
02:35A couple of the men said they saw a figure in a black robe.
02:38It was a female.
02:41Heather believes something deliberately lured Phil into danger in the decaying dormitory.
02:46Look at the ground.
02:48Whatever that noise is, it literally took you to very dangerous ground.
02:55Bell's under the house.
02:56We gotta get down there.
02:57Let's go.
02:58And it may not be finished with him yet.
03:01You are literally underneath a crumbling building.
03:04Alright, I'm moving.
03:10You need some water?
03:18Are you okay?
03:21Yeah, water. Water.
03:23Here.
03:27You good?
03:31Yeah, I think so.
03:33What just happened?
03:35I don't know.
03:36It just felt like my throat was closing.
03:40I've had reactions like that before, to something like peanuts that I'm allergic to, but I've never had a wave
03:46hit me so strong.
03:48And now it's just dissipating.
03:51Oh no, I mean we were under the, the Manchin Hill trees.
03:55For a long time.
03:57Maybe there's a delayed reaction to that.
04:00Yeah, but I feel like they would be affecting me as well.
04:01I mean, everybody's gonna react differently to those things?
04:04You were literally underneath the building, where those soldiers felt like they were being choked.
04:08And now you're telling me, you couldn't breathe.
04:11Oh my God.
04:13I mean, they all claimed, they felt physical hands on them.
04:16I can't necessarily say I felt that.
04:18But you felt the sensation of choking.
04:20Yeah.
04:21Pretty damn close.
04:22But, not seeing any, uh, dark cloak-tooted figure around.
04:27I did see a lot of poisonous trees.
04:30So, by my money, that's what it is.
04:34Agree to disagree.
04:36You feeling better?
04:38I'm feeling better now.
04:39I think I'm gonna be okay.
04:41Convinced it was the environment affecting me, I want to investigate the old hospital.
04:45The place where countless lepers tragically died.
04:49Inexplicable choking has been reported there too, and I wonder if the same toxic trees could be the real cause.
04:56Meanwhile, Heather is heading to the chapel.
04:59Another location of so-called paranormal attacks.
05:07First thing I'm gonna do is look down, because this island is full of very venomous scorpions.
05:13It is time to shine.
05:16They glow under UV light.
05:20Oh, my God. Look at that. Right away.
05:24Scorpion 1.
05:25So that is the Trinidad thick-tailed scorpion.
05:30They're one of the most venomous in all of Central and South America.
05:34About 1 in 50 people die when they get stung by this.
05:40Finding one right away?
05:41They're probably everywhere.
05:52It's definitely creepy.
06:00Oh, this must be the chapel.
06:16It's all just crumbling.
06:20Look at those floorboards.
06:23Literally falling in.
06:25I mean, there's open sky there.
06:27Let's be careful where we walk under.
06:31This is where a young girl saw a hooded shadow figure where she was physically choked.
06:37And whatever just choked fell.
06:40I wonder if it's all the same thing.
06:45Witnesses have repeatedly described a dark hooded woman during their choking fits.
06:49Strong evidence that a saccunia may be behind the attacks.
06:54If that's the case, I need to protect myself before trying to communicate with it.
06:59I say a prayer to St. Michael, who defends believers from the devil and his minions.
07:04St. Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle.
07:07And, following Najim's advice, I also lay out salt to distract any evil spirits.
07:13If you put salt by your window or by your door, they have to count every single grain before they
07:19can move on.
07:22I'll choose a pendulum.
07:25I invite those spirits, those creatures, those entities, to communicate with me through this pendulum.
07:35This pendulum will move in this direction for yes.
07:40This direction for no.
07:44If there's anyone here with me, can you say yes?
07:50Yes.
07:55Are you a jumbie?
08:01Are you a dwin?
08:05Big no?
08:10Is it a saccunia I need to be worried about?
08:16Yes.
08:18Big yes.
08:27Did you hear that?
08:28Yeah.
08:30There is nothing above me, and I swear I just heard a sound above me.
08:35Sound like footsteps.
08:38Are you above me right now?
08:45Yes.
08:47We are definitely not alone.
08:52Are you trying to scare me?
08:59Yes.
09:04What was that?
09:12I think that was the shutter.
09:14This shutter was in the window when we first entered the chapel.
09:19That is heavy.
09:22That's so heavy.
09:24That did not take some light force.
09:29That's insane.
09:30I was asking is something trying to scare me, and then that happened.
09:36It's wild.
09:44Oh.
09:46What is this?
09:49There's a building here.
09:52This must be the leper hospital.
09:55There could be some animal living in here.
09:58Oh boy.
09:59Look.
10:00We are underneath another manchineal tree right now.
10:03The most poisonous tree in the natural world.
10:06That is a manchineal tree.
10:08This is a manchineal tree.
10:10This one is.
10:12They're everywhere above us.
10:15You can smell the fruit.
10:17I don't know if it's just my imagination.
10:19My eyes are starting to burn a little bit.
10:22And I'm wondering if it's from the tree.
10:28I'm not leaving.
10:30I'm trying to understand this activity.
10:31I'm trying to understand what's going on.
10:34Is that you that ripped the shutter off its hinges?
10:41Yes.
10:44Are we welcome on this island?
10:51No.
10:54Is that why something tried to harm Phil earlier?
11:02Yes.
11:05Is Phil in danger?
11:13Yes.
11:20Whoa.
11:22Look at this place.
11:25I found very often that structures made by humans can sometimes end up being perfect homes for things that could
11:34surprise you.
11:43Whoa.
11:46I just got goosebumps.
11:48Look.
11:51When I was laying on the ground in the Coast Guard dormitory, Heather told me to say out loud what
11:56I was seeing in my head.
11:57It was this.
11:59I keep getting this image of a square hole in the wall.
12:02I don't know why that keeps popping in my head.
12:05I assumed it was in a wall across from me, but it could just as easily have been on the
12:09ground.
12:10This is so weird.
12:13Why did I see that?
12:16Maybe I'm supposed to go in here.
12:19I don't even know what this room was used for.
12:24Is there anything in this hole?
12:30Oh.
12:32Oh, my God.
12:39Oh, my God.
12:41Are you all right?
12:42I think so.
12:45Oh.
12:47All right.
12:49Oh.
12:51That was rough.
12:54Okay.
12:55Wow.
12:58I just fell through the floor.
13:00Like, what the hell?
13:02This place kind of has it out for me.
13:06You know what Heather's going to say?
13:07It was a trap.
13:09In this case, that sure felt like a trap.
13:18Phil, you okay?
13:20A little sore.
13:21I can explain that later.
13:23What's going on with you?
13:24Look, I've definitely been communicating with something, and it told me you were in danger.
13:29No way.
13:30Heather, I just fell through a damn floorboard.
13:33Are you kidding me?
13:35And now you were calling me to say you got a message that I was in danger?
13:38Yes.
13:39In this case, I think I'm starting to agree with you.
13:43Are you still in the chapel?
13:45Yeah, I think you should have it my way.
13:46Okay.
13:47I'll reach you there.
13:48Copy that.
13:57You okay?
13:58Yeah.
13:59You fell through a floorboard?
14:00I mean, you're not going to believe it.
14:02Remember what I told you I saw when I was laying down, and you told me to clean my mind?
14:06Yeah.
14:06Something through the wall.
14:08I thought it was a wall.
14:09I came across a building back there, and I realized it was the exact same square cut out into a
14:16floor.
14:16No way.
14:17I walk in there and try to figure out what's in that hole, and boom, foot falls right through a
14:22floorboard.
14:22I'm down.
14:23That's the third time you were lured into danger.
14:27I knew she was going to say that.
14:28Yeah.
14:29According to whoever I was communicating with, we're not welcome here.
14:34I'll admit, most of the time, I feel pretty welcome in the jungle.
14:37Right now, I'm not so sure about this place.
14:38Well, clearly, there is a lot going on here.
14:42And if Obia is at the heart of it all, we need to regroup and learn as much as we
14:46possibly can about it.
14:48Let's go.
14:49Okay.
14:54With Heather certain that Obia is somehow shaping the activity here, we head back to the mainland to learn more
15:00about this secretive religion.
15:02But first, it's time to update Josh on our findings.
15:08There are my castaways.
15:10So how's the most haunted island of the most haunted island in the Caribbean?
15:14Well, something almost choked Phil to death.
15:16Yes, I was choking, but to be fair to me and my larynx, I was at the time surrounded by
15:22toxic trees known to cause swelling of the throat.
15:25And these trees are also known to cause visions and communicate threats?
15:28Well, that part wasn't in my botany guide.
15:30Wait, what?
15:31Are you saying you think the island was trying to communicate with you guys?
15:35Yeah, something identified itself as a Secunia, which is an Obia woman that made a deal with the devil.
15:40Honestly, I feel like I have to find an Obia practitioner to really understand the activity going on here.
15:45Well, if that's the case, I have just the place for you.
15:49There is a remote village there called Moruga that is considered the capital of Obia.
15:54And there are reports of some very disturbing paranormal activity, including, get this, a mass demonic possession at the local
16:03high school.
16:04That is a seriously shocking claim. Are there any witnesses to this?
16:08Witnesses?
16:09Witnesses? Oh, yeah. This was all over the news. Check this out.
16:13Some call it stranger than fiction, as Moruga secondary student Kenesha Ramlal explains what some of her peers went through
16:19on Wednesday and Thursday.
16:21There was like, just like, I'm getting sick and had headaches and they were well-weak and stuff, so they
16:26fell down.
16:26Some of the children complained of being strangled and scratched, clawed.
16:31Pentecostal minister Mark Daniel got called to the school.
16:34The symptoms were there, he says, to define demonic activity.
16:37He's linking it to the history of Moruga.
16:40Moruga has a lot of Obia, a lot of black magic, a lot of that type of thing in Moruga,
16:46a lot of it.
16:48Wow. That is next level serious.
16:50Are there any witnesses willing to actually talk about this?
16:53Look, Obia is considered very, very dangerous by a lot of people in Moruga, so much so that getting anyone
16:59to agree to go on camera to talk about it has been a huge challenge.
17:02But I have managed to lock down one of the students that was actually hospitalized in this reported attack, as
17:09well as a current school teacher.
17:10That's huge. Let's head to Moruga now.
17:12And Josh, while we're heading down there, can you try and lock down some people who know more about the
17:16Obia faith itself?
17:17For sure. I will look into it. But listen, guys, be really careful out there.
17:21There are really strong beliefs around Obia. Folks think that it is extremely powerful.
17:26So tread carefully. You are headed into the eye of the tropical storm.
17:30Okay. We'll be careful.
17:33It's a three-hour drive from Port of Spain to the remote village of Moruga, a route that cuts through
17:39miles of rugged jungle roads.
17:43That's the school.
17:45That's what they have to say.
17:46Yeah.
17:47We're meeting teacher Leanna Boyce and former student Whitney Kahn, who lived through a truly terrifying experience at the village's
17:55high school.
17:56The reports say this was some kind of, what, demonic attack?
18:00Mm-hmm.
18:01Do you agree with that?
18:02Yeah.
18:03Can you tell us what you remember of what happened that day?
18:07It was around lunchtime.
18:10Everybody was eating and we hear this screaming, so we thought it was fighting.
18:14But it wasn't actually a fight.
18:16One girl in my class, her eyes were rolling up in her head and she was barking back.
18:22And I thought she was having a panic attack.
18:24So I ended up lending her my inhaler and after that, it was so frantic.
18:29So I just went back upstairs and there's where everything just went haywire.
18:34What happened?
18:36The last thing I remember was walking up the step.
18:39I see a black figure with red eyes and a black hood.
18:45And you saw that, what, in your mind or walking around?
18:48Hovering over me.
18:50Oh, no.
18:51It was terrible.
18:54And you don't have any memory after that?
18:56No, I can't remember anything else.
18:58So what's the next thing you remember?
18:59When did you come to?
19:01In the hospital.
19:03They told me I tried to jump off the second floor balcony.
19:08I was banging my head, so they had to hold my head.
19:11And it took five boys to hold me down.
19:15You could have been seriously hurt.
19:17Or dead.
19:19Do you think that Obia played a role in what happened?
19:23Yeah.
19:23Yes.
19:24When I heard it, the first thing came to my mind is Obia.
19:28You have to remember, Moruga is very spiritual.
19:30The area and the name Moruga have that Obia word slam-hunted.
19:38That stigma started years ago due to Mother Cornhusk being from the area.
19:44Mother Cornhusk?
19:45Yeah.
19:46And Mother Cornhusk's famous Obia woman throughout the Caribbean.
19:50She used to have people from all over coming to Moruga to walk Obia for her.
19:55And you could go to Mother Cornhusk's house and church.
19:58It still stand there today.
20:00Even though she's dead 20 or much years, she is known for doing good and bad.
20:06Hmm.
20:09With Mother Cornhusk as a potential suspect behind the activity reported in Moruga,
20:14Phil and I split up to speak with two Obia practitioners that Josh found.
20:19Mama Akila.
20:20Hey!
20:22Thank you for being with me.
20:23Thank you for being with me.
20:23Ia Akila Jaramugi practices Obia as Mama Akila, offering healing and protection to those who
20:30seek her counsel.
20:31Before we speak, she pours a libation for her ancestors, a ritual offering in their honor,
20:39and places a white cloth over me so that I'm in harmony with the spirits.
20:43Good.
20:44I wanted to meet with you today to learn the Obia ways.
20:49Mm-hmm.
20:50Can you tell me about the origin?
20:52Obia is earth.
20:55Obia is healing.
20:56Obia is living the life that my ancestors were taught.
21:11So, for you, it is connection to your ancestors.
21:14It's connection to the earth, to the elements.
21:17Yeah.
21:18It's just healing and goodness.
21:20But if someone wanted revenge, could they use it in that way as well?
21:24They can do anything they want to do.
21:26Obia is a powerful thing.
21:28It's not something that you can take lightly.
21:32Obia can be the other side of my calm energy.
21:36Obia can have rot as well.
21:38Mm.
21:38Like, you go to the sea, one day it's calm and one day it's rough, that's Obia.
21:43Mm.
21:44What is the process of communicating with your ancestors, with your spirits, through Obia?
21:51When I want to go to my ancestors, I ask permission to speak.
21:55I offer light and for libation to all my ancestors.
22:01I invoke the energies that need to invoke and the answers will come.
22:08While Heather speaks with her expert, I'm meeting with Morgan Forgini, who practices Obia as Papa Duguid.
22:15He trained with the infamous mother corn husk, the Obia practitioner who some say is behind the negative activity reported
22:23all over Moruga, even though she's been dead for years.
22:27What is Obia capable of?
22:29Yes.
22:30Some people do it for healing, for good.
22:33Mm-hmm.
22:33And some people take it to do evil.
22:35Is Obia capable of manifesting something like a Sukunya or a Dwen?
22:41Yes.
22:43I could do it.
22:44If I want to do it, I will control them.
22:48You give the spirit goat blood.
22:51You would feed the spirit goat's blood?
22:55Yeah.
22:56And the spirit will start hunting you from there on.
22:59It will start getting sick.
23:01And these evil spirits could kill you.
23:11So what kind of signs would let me know that the spirit is present?
23:16Yeah, well, maybe you might feel it in an unusual way.
23:20Your body.
23:21I just had an incident where I had difficulty breathing in an area where people had said there is a
23:28strong female spirit.
23:30Why do you think it did that?
23:32Because your spirit weak.
23:34The spirit in your body weak.
23:37It could destroy you in seconds.
23:39In seconds?
23:40In seconds.
23:43Where in this village do you think is the heart of Obia?
23:54What kind of rituals?
23:58It could be good.
23:59It could be evil too.
24:01Do you think that some of the activity that is here in Moruga could come from that property?
24:06Yes.
24:08These things could stay.
24:10It could affect people.
24:11Most people are afraid to pass.
24:13Why?
24:14People die there.
24:17Multiple people have died on her property.
24:20Mm-hmm.
24:21These evil spirits could cause people to kill them.
24:25If you did not do the right thing, they could be dangerous to you.
24:29You'd like to make sure what you're doing.
24:35Papa Duguid claims that the paranormal activity Trinidad is suffering from can be traced back to one place.
24:41Mother Kornhus' abandoned sanctuary.
24:44We need to find the ruins of her church, where she performed Obia rituals for over 50 years, hidden deep
24:51in the jungle.
24:53We'll have to bushwhack our way through dangerous terrain to get there.
24:57But if Papa Duguid's claims are right, it'll be nothing compared to the spiritual danger we'll supposedly face if we
25:05find it.
25:07The Obia man I spoke with warned me that this area is incredibly dangerous.
25:12He said that these spirits could manifest in many different ways.
25:16They can make one of us want to kill another person.
25:19And he said, in fact, people have died back here.
25:22So, if any of us start to feel off, we need to call it out.
25:26Yeah.
25:27So, Sean?
25:28Yeah. Let's try this way.
25:33Watch where you step.
25:35The good news is, all the regional hospitals are the best at dealing with snake bites.
25:41The bad news is, that's because there's a lot of snake bites around here.
25:44Great.
26:01Here's the building!
26:03Oh, yeah.
26:06Wow.
26:10Look at this.
26:14Oh.
26:15Definitely seems like no one has been here in a very long time.
26:18No.
26:19This is crumbling.
26:22This does not look like a church.
26:26Maybe this is where she would have lived?
26:28This is where she would have lived?
26:30I mean, look at that.
26:31She could have sat right there?
26:32Yeah.
26:33To think that such a powerful woman, her life was right here in this home.
26:38True.
26:39But she didn't do rituals for people in here.
26:41That was done in her church somewhere else on this property.
26:45True.
26:46But before we find that, we have to do something for her here.
27:18Okay.
27:19Let's go find out.
27:25You see anything?
27:27Nothing.
27:31It opens up over here.
27:36Look.
27:37Another building.
27:39Wow.
27:42Shh.
27:43Wait, wait, wait.
27:45Whoa!
27:47Eyeshine.
27:49What is that?
27:58Oh, my God.
28:01Are those goats?
28:04That must be what we heard.
28:06Why would someone keep goats here?
28:09Do you know what the Obi-Man I spoke to said?
28:11What?
28:12He said, if you are to do an evil curse on someone, you need goat's blood.
28:17No.
28:19You give the spirit goat blood, and the spirit will start hunting you from day on.
28:28Look at these guys.
28:30I hate a little goat.
28:32What are you doing out here?
28:34Oh, my God.
28:35Look at these.
28:37See that wound right there?
28:38Yeah.
28:39This one has one, too.
28:40I recognize this.
28:43These are marks from vampire bats.
28:46Visiting these goats probably on a nightly basis.
28:48Latching onto them and drinking their blood.
28:51You just said people use goat's blood for evil curses.
28:55True.
28:56So how do you know that's not this?
29:00I guess I don't technically know.
29:02But if these goats get visited tonight, I want to know if it's a bat or a person.
29:09So maybe we should sit up a camera trap.
29:11Okay.
29:12Right on here.
29:18Got a good angle on that?
29:20Yeah.
29:20I think so.
29:26What was that?
29:30Did you hear that?
29:32I mean, that sounded like someone yelling.
29:34Yes.
29:38Was not a goat.
29:39No.
29:41Let's go this way.
29:42Okay.
29:42Okay.
29:59There it is again.
30:01Up there.
30:15Oh, my gosh.
30:17Not a building.
30:19Not a whole lot on the left.
30:21The jungle's completely taken over.
30:25We gotta figure out what this is.
30:30Oh.
30:31Heather.
30:32This is for sure the church I gotta cross.
30:36I think I have something better.
30:38What do you mean better?
30:39Look at this.
30:42I think this potentially could have been her altar.
30:45Wow.
30:47And Heather?
30:49Seen this?
30:50What?
30:50Some feathers here.
30:52Oh, God.
30:53Is that a bad thing?
30:53I mean, to me, that's evidence of another ritual.
30:57Oh.
30:58What?
30:58Oh, my God. Look at this.
31:00Jawbone.
31:00Are you serious?
31:01And a candle.
31:02Right here.
31:03Oh, my God.
31:05100%.
31:06People are doing rituals here.
31:07Inside the ruins of this church.
31:10This was Mother Cornhusk's altar.
31:13And to come in here and try and harness that to control it?
31:17You couldn't ask for something more dangerous.
31:20And based on what I've learned?
31:22Some people trying to do that met a pretty awful fate here.
31:25Right.
31:26But we have to try and communicate here.
31:28Are you gonna sit up on the altar?
31:30Oh, I'm definitely not touching that.
31:32I'm gonna sit up over here, but keep it in Sideline.
31:34Okay.
31:38Clear line of sight for me.
31:39Okay.
31:41I want to try to communicate with Mother Cornhusk by calling on the four elements,
31:44the way Mama Aquila taught me.
31:49Soil.
31:49I lay out soil to root myself in the earth.
31:52Pour water for the Obia ancestors.
31:56For wind, I will use my voice to ask questions.
31:59And fire.
32:00Fire.
32:00And fire will provide the answers.
32:03If the flame leans towards me or Phil, or flares up suddenly, I'll take it as a yes.
32:12I ask to be at one with nature.
32:15And to communicate with whatever entities, spirits, or creatures may be here.
32:22Recording.
32:23All right.
32:26Mother Cornhusk, are you here with us?
32:30You can twist this flame, move this flame, grow this flame.
32:38That's a lot of movement.
32:40It's dancing.
32:41There's no...
32:43No breeze.
32:45No.
32:46Mother Cornhusk is the activity here on Trinidad because of Obia.
32:55Now it's leaning towards me.
32:56Okay.
32:57I'll take that as a yes.
33:00Did it all come from here?
33:06Wow.
33:07It's pointing right at me.
33:08So based on your system, that means what I just said is true.
33:14Yeah.
33:16Have you been with us this whole time?
33:20Are you the same one that we spoke to at Lopino?
33:25At Shaka Shikari Island?
33:28Here tonight?
33:30Just definitely leaning towards you, Phil.
33:37Those students of that school, were they possessed by something evil?
33:46Yes.
33:49Are you the one that possessed those students?
33:55No.
33:57Have there been curses done here to harm others?
34:04Yes.
34:06Walter's right there.
34:07What if I move the flame a little closer?
34:09Just put it right here.
34:24That was a big noise.
34:30You hear that?
34:32It sounded like...
34:35Footsteps brand...
34:36Ooh!
34:42One of the first great practitioners of Obia was a woman known as Queen Nanny.
34:47Born in Africa, brought to the Caribbean in chains, she would become one of the region's most extraordinary freedom fighters.
34:53Legends say Queen Nanny's powers allowed her to spy on her enemies, leading her troops, known as the Windward Maroons,
35:02to many victories.
35:04Eyewitnesses swore she could catch bullets in her hands, hurling them back at her attackers.
35:08Others said she could cloak her warriors in shadow until they struck.
35:14Queen Nanny was so feared that in 1740, the British signed a treaty granting her and the Maroons freedom.
35:21Her defiance inspired others, terrifying the colonizers so much that they eventually outlawed Obia itself.
35:28Today, Queen Nanny is considered a hero across the Caribbean.
35:32Her picture is featured on Jamaica's $500 banknote, a priceless reminder of her resistance and strength.
35:44What the hell was that?
35:46Something just flew into the flame and died.
35:49Oh, my God.
35:50Right when you moved it closer to the altar.
35:53We heard those noises.
35:55And that?
35:56That is a sign that eyes are on us.
36:00What do you see is like a warning shot?
36:02Yes.
36:03It's a living sacrifice.
36:05It doesn't matter how small it is.
36:08That very well could have been a sign that we're intruding.
36:12Or it's just a bug that flew into a flame.
36:15That happens all the time.
36:17We have been interacting with something this entire time.
36:20Something evil.
36:22I got an affirmative at Lupino.
36:24At Shaka Shikari.
36:26That it was a Sucunya.
36:28It is very clear to me that Obia is a force.
36:33It is very powerful.
36:35And just like nature, it can be used for good or for evil.
36:39I'll admit, Obia and nature are undeniably intertwined.
36:44I just think it's nature influencing Obia beliefs versus Obia affecting nature.
36:53When did you turn off my recorder?
36:55I didn't.
36:57I did not turn it off.
36:59I have no idea when this died.
37:00We had full battery.
37:02Are you kidding me?
37:04The recorder dying was the last in an all too long list of unsettling events that my team encountered while
37:11investigating the terrors of Trinidad.
37:14The digital recorder lost all power at the same moment Phil and Heather heard noises in the brush behind them.
37:22You hear that?
37:25It sounded like footsteps.
37:28And what it captured right before it died is disturbing to the extreme.
37:35Sounded like...
37:39We've never recorded anything like this before.
37:47Heather believes this eerie audio is proof that, for good or ill, the spiritual energy from Mother Cornhusk's Obia rituals
37:55still lingers at her wilderness church more than two decades after her death.
38:01After all, Mother Cornhusk was renowned for her incredible power.
38:05I should do all type of rituals.
38:08What kind of rituals?
38:09It could be good, it could be evil too.
38:12And there were many more horrors from the team's time in Trinidad.
38:19They traveled to the island to investigate reports of malevolent forces.
38:24Duens, Jumbies, and Sucunhas.
38:27And frighteningly, they may have found evidence of all three.
38:31Are you a Sucunha?
38:35Heather believes she was communicating with a Sucunha, the shape-shifting, soul-sucking vampiric spirit, near the Lupino plantation, and
38:45then again on Shakashakare.
38:47Is it a Sucunha I need to be worried about?
38:50Yes.
38:51As for Duens, the evil childlike entities said to have backwards feet.
38:56We analyzed the photograph of the footprint Phil found in the forest behind the plantation.
39:01It matched those of an approximately four-year-old child.
39:05But curiously, there are no children of that age in the closest village.
39:10Phil notes that it could have been just a kid who visited the area going for a walk.
39:14Heather asks why a child would be walking alone that late at night in the jungle, doing so away from
39:20civilization and possibly backwards.
39:23And lastly, there were the Jumbies, supposed restless spirits of the dead.
39:28On Shakashakare Island, the IR camera the team left behind to monitor their boat shows hours of gentle movement.
39:36And then, it records this.
39:42The current under the boat never changes, yet it's clearly rocking more violently than it naturally should.
39:49With no obvious explanation, Heather wonders if this could be evidence of a Jumbie.
39:54Perhaps one desperately trying to escape this island where so many perished.
39:59They've not been able to move on. Jumbies can't cost water.
40:03Thankfully, there were also a few things that could be explained.
40:06Although our trail cam failed to catch any vampire bats in the act,
40:11Phil showed images of the goat's curiously mutilated tissue to a veterinary expert,
40:16who confirmed they are consistent with marks left behind by the blood-sucking bats.
40:24Phil is also convinced his coughing fit under the dormitory was caused by breathing in pollen from the deadly manchineal
40:31trees,
40:32finding dust from it on his clothing.
40:35He's incredibly lucky he only got a minor taste of these toxic trees.
40:41So, with some things in Trinidad settled, but some distinctly unsettled,
40:45there was one last thing the team needed to take care of before they left the country.
40:50Phil's limbo loss.
40:53All right, you on.
40:55Just when he thought he couldn't get any lower, it was time for him to face the music.
41:00All right, we all know that Phil Torres lost a bet, and it's time for him to pay up.
41:05Phil Torres, come on down!
41:21Anything you want to say, Torres?
41:23You know what, everybody? I've learned something today.
41:26You should never make a bet with Heather O'Mara.
41:31Maybe she got one of these for Josh.
41:34Maybe!
