00:01Override amber sentinels. Hold altitude at 6 kilometers. Reduce velocity to 20%.
00:07Effective to avoid that sulfur flume, I hope.
00:09Yes, I thought it might as well.
00:11Petra, override red sentinels.
00:13Negative, Commander. Increasing velocity to 30%.
00:18Altitude to 12 kilometers. Time equals T plus 30 seconds.
00:23Down the computer.
00:24Ship isn't programmed to self-destruct.
00:26Radio signal 429 to 5.
00:28Petra, lock on. Visual scan 420.95.
00:32Increased communication, Link.
00:34Possibly an Ilya distress beat.
00:35Too little, too late.
00:39Petra, magnification times 100.
00:44There it is.
00:46Ilya to shuttle.
00:47Ilya to shuttle. Do you read?
00:52Oh, my God.
00:54Shuttle to Ilya. Stand by for shuttle docking.
00:59Captain Lewis.
01:01Where the hell have you been?
01:37I hope you had a good night's sleep.
01:38Oh, the sleep of exhaustion. I'm still in a sort of fog.
01:42We've put the others in the common room.
01:44A bit short of cabin space, I'm afraid.
01:45Oh, to be honest, I don't think any of us care where we have to lay our heads.
01:49Where's Captain Lewis?
01:51Hello?
01:51Ah, I don't know.
01:52I've hardly had a chance to speak to him.
01:55Sit down.
01:56Come and try some of the famous Ilya fruit cup.
01:59I can't imagine how we're going to thank him.
02:01It was the bravest thing I've ever come across.
02:04He's a good man.
02:05Now then, let me tell you a little bit about myself.
02:09I'm Charles Breland, project coordinator, Deedalus, and chief scientific officer, Jupiter System.
02:16Why did you let him come down? I told you to abort all rescue attempts.
02:21I thought there was a chance he might go through.
02:22Not much of a one.
02:24He must be a remarkable man.
02:27You must be a remarkable woman, trying to turn help away.
02:30Could you find out where he is, please?
02:35Petra, get me Mr Lewis.
02:38You mustn't expect too many social graces from Fimbo.
02:41I beg your pardon?
02:42Fimbo Lewis.
02:43Ah, where are you?
02:45Well, on the bridge.
02:46What about Drummond?
02:47I've just taken over from Drummond.
02:48Don't worry, Professor, I'm quite capable.
02:51I'll see you in about 15 minutes.
02:53Bring you a visitor.
02:54I'd rather see him alone.
02:57As you wish.
02:58Just send in a report.
03:01He ought to get the award, don't you think?
03:04A medal, you mean?
03:05The European Space Award for Outstanding Bravery.
03:09Didn't some publisher put up a million eccums to go with it?
03:13Yes, sir.
03:14Now you've come to mention it, I think they did.
03:19Shakespeare's Juliet was not Northern European, Fiona.
03:22If you don't understand that, you missed the whole concept of the play.
03:25Shakespeare was Northern European and he made her up.
03:28He didn't make her up.
03:30He stole the plot from an old Italian story.
03:33I understand how she felt.
03:35I was like that when I was 13.
03:38About a boy called Giorgio.
03:41What's funny?
03:43What's funny?
03:44You know that there's love because you're embarrassed by your feelings.
03:47That's the difference.
03:48We don't get embarrassed by our feelings.
03:50Hi, girls.
03:50Hi.
03:52Fiona, could you meet me at 13.30 in the dome?
03:54You'll give us time to get organized for the auditions.
03:56Yeah, sure.
03:56Anna, Mia, how's it going?
03:58Hello, Byron.
03:59I'm really beginning to understand Juliet.
04:01Oh, that's fantastico.
04:03You keep it up, Anna.
04:04What time shall I come?
04:05Where?
04:07To my audition for Juliet.
04:09Between 14.30 and 1800 in the dome?
04:12Have you done much acting?
04:13Well, I did Mother Courage at school.
04:15Oh, great play.
04:17Ciao, Anna.
04:18See you later.
04:19Bye.
04:21Fiona, is he any good?
04:24He's energetic.
04:25That's not always the same thing.
04:28Petra, review course coordinates.
04:32Ilya, 14,000 kilometers from Io.
04:35Course is Lima, 34.2.
04:38Delta, 12.4.
04:40Speed, 2118 kilometers per hour and accelerating.
04:45Captain Lewis.
04:47Oh, hello.
04:49You saved my life and the lives of five others.
04:52You took the most terrible risk imaginable,
04:54not just for a split second,
04:56but sustained over many hours.
04:59Ah.
05:02Yes, well, it's just the job.
05:04It isn't just the job, and we both know it.
05:07Well, as long as it worked out all right, then.
05:10And Petra Systems check, country one.
05:13Confirmed?
05:14You'll excuse me the continual grind.
05:18I'm going to make sure people know about you.
05:20What people?
05:21The right people.
05:23The important people.
05:24Oh, well, Elliot always advised me
05:26to stay well clear of the important people.
05:28Elliot?
05:28Yes, he was the captain.
05:33Captain Lewis.
05:34It was virtually impossible
05:36to land a shuttle on Io
05:38in the conditions prevailing last night.
05:40Yes, well, it was a bit of a pig.
05:41A bit of a...
05:44The Ilya's lucky to have a captain like you.
05:48Look, I'm trying to work here.
05:50I just wanted to thank you.
05:53Yes.
05:54And, um...
05:55I'm not the captain, by the way.
06:00Hiya.
06:01You coming to class?
06:03I'll go with you.
06:04I've got stellar evolution with Professor Perelman.
06:06No, don't worry.
06:07You go on.
06:08Fine.
06:09Oh, Melody.
06:10That looks a bit tight.
06:11It's not.
06:13You're never going to get that done, Art.
06:15Of course I will.
06:16Look, it's no use, Melody.
06:17You're just getting too big for your clothes.
06:20Sarah, I've only put on three kilos.
06:22All our clothes are meant to take a variation weight
06:23of three kilos anyway.
06:25Something's happened to this.
06:26Are you an ostrich or what?
06:27You're pregnant, Melody.
06:29You're going to get bigger and bigger.
06:31Oh, I don't like it.
06:33I don't want to be fat.
06:34It's not fat.
06:36It's pregnant.
06:38Where on earth are we going to find any clothes for you?
06:40I mean, they're hardly going to sell pregnancy outfits
06:42in the Jupiter system, are they?
06:43Maybe I could borrow your clothes.
06:45Pardon?
06:46What does it do after the baby's born?
06:47Yeah, but we're the same size.
06:49Well, you've always been that little bit bigger than me.
06:52I have not!
06:54And even if I have, we're not talking little bits, are we?
06:57We're talking enormous tummies.
07:00You're trying to make me feel awful, aren't you?
07:01Look, you can try on my clothes if you like,
07:03but they're not going to be any better.
07:05Oh, I'm going. I'm going to be late otherwise.
07:08It was the nightingale and not the lark
07:10that pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear.
07:13Nightly she sings on yon pomegranate tree.
07:17You can read it for the audition.
07:19Everyone else will.
07:21Believe me, love, it was the nightingale.
07:23Hiya.
07:25Thought I was going to be late.
07:26No, Breland's late.
07:29That doesn't look much like stellar evolution.
07:31She thinks she ought to be Juliet because she's Italian.
07:34Oh, I did Juliet once when I was at school.
07:36She's a right idiot if you ask me.
07:39Yon light is not daylight.
07:40It is some meteor the sun exhales.
07:44Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
07:46Good morning.
07:48This morning we're continuing our survey
07:51of supernova detonation mechanisms.
07:58I can just leave the coffee and go.
08:00No, I'm sorry I was a bit short with you earlier.
08:03I'm still very tired.
08:04You don't have to watch what you say with me.
08:06If it wasn't for you,
08:07I'd be stuck inside a piece of lava by now.
08:09I wish...
08:10I wish that you would stop going on
08:12as if I'd done something heroic.
08:13You did.
08:14No, you don't understand.
08:16I didn't rescue you because I'm a hero.
08:18I rescued you because I'm a failure
08:20and I'm about to be thrown on a scrap heap.
08:22Say that again.
08:23No, it's true.
08:24She couldn't get it done up at all.
08:25Well, she'll have to borrow Daniel's clothes.
08:27Oh, yeah.
08:27Try telling Melody.
08:28Hi.
08:28Hi, man.
08:29Hi.
08:30You know, what I can't understand
08:31is why is this girl still three times cleverer than me?
08:34Because I'm pregnant, Jim, not brain dead.
08:35Hey, Melody.
08:36Fiona thinks you should borrow Daniel's clothes.
08:38Thanks, Fiona.
08:40Good.
08:41Nothing to worry about.
08:42A few transient symptoms of stress, that's all.
08:45Are you surprised?
08:46Ah, yes.
08:47You had a very lucky escape.
08:49It wasn't luck.
08:50It was Captain Lewis.
08:52Yes, it was astonishing.
08:54Tell me, why is he being sent back to Earth?
08:57He didn't tell you.
08:57He said it was medical grounds.
09:00He's not very easy to talk to.
09:02Yes, it is medical grounds.
09:05What are they?
09:06I'm his doctor.
09:07I can't tell you.
09:09Hello.
09:10How are you today?
09:11I'm so sorry I haven't been to see you.
09:13I have been rushed off my feet with the students.
09:16Oh, the doctor says there's nothing wrong with me.
09:18Ah, that a week of taking it easy won't cure.
09:21What's wrong with Finbo Lewis?
09:23How long have you got?
09:24Why is he being sent back to Earth?
09:26He's got cataracts on his eyes.
09:29He was in a radiation accident two years ago,
09:32and it seems they're getting worse.
09:33It's just the cataract.
09:35Yes.
09:35Speak to Dr. Nicklaus at the American Hospital on Island 5.
09:39I know about Island 5.
09:41I've spoken to Island 5,
09:42and I've read everything that could have any bearing on his condition.
09:45But Dr. Nicklaus hasn't published yet.
09:47Just speak to him.
09:49Just see what he says.
09:49Oh, now be gone.
09:51More light and light it grows.
09:53More light and light.
09:55More dark and dark our woes.
09:57Then there's a nurse,
09:59and then she goes out.
10:01Then window,
10:02let day in,
10:04and life out.
10:05Gone.
10:07Oh, you're right.
10:08Farewell.
10:09Farewell.
10:11One kiss,
10:12and I'll descend.
10:20Who is it?
10:21Sarah.
10:23Honestly,
10:23open.
10:26We're rehearsing, actually.
10:28Oh,
10:28it's all right.
10:29I just want to have a look at your clothes.
10:30What for?
10:31For Melody.
10:32Don't mind me.
10:33Carry on.
10:34Melody can't get into my clothes.
10:35She's bigger than I am.
10:37There's got to be something on the ship
10:39the poor girl can wear.
10:41What are you doing?
10:42We're rehearsing for the audition.
10:44Oh.
10:45I was a very touching Juliet
10:46when I did it.
10:47What's in a name?
10:49That which they call a rose
10:51by any other name
10:52would smell as sweet.
10:54We weren't doing that scene.
10:56I'll be making a full report
10:57of your conduct to the commission.
10:59No, you don't bother.
11:00Louise,
11:01I have a job to do.
11:02If you will go off
11:03performing heroics,
11:04I have to report them.
11:05It's not a question
11:06of whether you want me to or not.
11:08Great.
11:08Then I get a medal
11:09on veterans day.
11:10You know,
11:11there is a difference
11:12between being a reluctant
11:13hero and being
11:14a complete oaf.
11:15Not that you'd know about it.
11:17Oh, what, with Thimble?
11:18Yes, of course.
11:19See you later.
11:20All right.
11:22I'm sorry
11:23I didn't come for the chat.
11:24Hardly seemed any point
11:25with my limited space life.
11:27I've been told
11:28of some new developments
11:29in the treatment
11:30of radiation cataracts.
11:32There's a new treatment?
11:32Now, it's very much
11:33in the experimental state.
11:34I'll try it.
11:36There's a doctor
11:37on Island 5
11:38who seems to be
11:39having very good results.
11:40Does it mean
11:41I can stay in space?
11:42If it works,
11:44then yes.
11:48Some say
11:49the lark
11:50and loathed toad
11:51changed eyes.
11:52Oh, now I would
11:53they had changed voices too.
11:56Oh, now be gone.
11:58You missed some lines out.
11:59Well, it doesn't really matter,
12:00Anna, does it?
12:01Every little last word.
12:02Director's always cut anyway.
12:03It matters for our audition piece.
12:05Just go on, Sarah.
12:07Oh, now be gone.
12:08More light and light it grows.
12:10Oh, now I can remember.
12:11More light and light.
12:13More dark and dark our woes.
12:15Oh, then it's the nurse.
12:17Do you want to be the nurse, Anna?
12:18No.
12:20Well, go on, Sarah.
12:21Do you remember?
12:22Then window, let day in.
12:23Yeah, then window.
12:24Let day in
12:25and let life out.
12:27Farewell.
12:28Farewell.
12:29One kiss
12:30and I'll descend.
12:36Doctor?
12:38Yes, Professor?
12:39What did you have to say
12:39to Fimble?
12:41We discussed his cataracts.
12:43What about them?
12:44I think you should ask him that.
12:46I'm asking you.
12:47I have to deal with him.
12:48I need to know how he is.
12:49Okay.
12:50I just say
12:51he'll tell you soon enough.
12:52It may be the possibility
12:54of treating his cataracts successfully.
12:56So that he could stay in space?
12:57Yeah, I hope so.
12:58And you really think
12:59that's a good thing?
13:01Wish I did.
13:17Okay.
13:18And we'll have the chairs
13:18right over there.
13:20We've got to be far enough away
13:21to tell if these turkeys
13:22can project.
13:23That's the most important thing.
13:25And learning the lines?
13:26No, no, no.
13:27We've got to be able to hear them first,
13:28lovey.
13:29Then we'll worry about the words.
13:31Hey, Melody,
13:32come and see Rebecca with me now.
13:34Come on,
13:34or I'll miss my audition.
13:35No, I don't want to go and see Rebecca.
13:36Come on, go for your audition.
13:38Look, you know,
13:39you've got to start thinking ahead
13:40about this baby.
13:41Think ahead?
13:42How much worse can it get?
13:44Look, I'm fat.
13:45I've got a permanent runny nose
13:46and a headache.
13:47And you need bigger clothes.
13:49I hate big clothes.
13:50And you're going to need
13:51some little ones as well.
13:52Oh, I've got little ones, thanks.
13:53They're the ones I can't get into.
13:54Not for you.
13:55For Persephone,
13:56whatever you're going to call her.
13:58Hey, do you know how to make clothes?
14:00We did a little bit
14:01when I was at school in Nottingham.
14:02We never actually made clothes,
14:04mind you.
14:06Just smocks.
14:07I am not wearing a smock
14:09as designed by your school
14:10in Nottingham.
14:11Well, I suppose I could try
14:13making some little bags
14:14with arms in them.
14:15What?
14:16Where's his head supposed to go?
14:17I'll leave a hole for that.
14:19Sounds wonderful.
14:21Hey, Melody.
14:22What?
14:23What about nappies?
14:25How can you be like this?
14:26If there's some new treatment,
14:27of course you ought to try it.
14:28I'm not arguing
14:29about his medical treatment.
14:30Yeah, well, what are you saying, then?
14:32The man is a hero.
14:33You know he risked his life
14:34to go down to Iowa
14:34and not expect him to come back.
14:35Exactly.
14:36So let him go back to Earth
14:38on a high note.
14:39Let him fade out quietly
14:40and with dignity.
14:41Fade out?
14:42I have never thought
14:43he was up to being
14:44captain of this ship.
14:45Yeah, but now,
14:46what do you think now?
14:47The same, if you must know.
14:49You've just seen him
14:50take his life in his hands.
14:51He got that shuttle down
14:52and back in the middle
14:53of a volcanic eruption.
14:55Who else could have done that,
14:56could you?
14:56I'm not saying he isn't brave
14:58or skilled mechanically.
15:00Mechanically, is that all?
15:01In many ways, he is admirable.
15:04Well, I'm glad you say so.
15:04But he is not
15:05captain material
15:06and he never will be.
15:07I cannot let my admiration
15:09for what he's just done
15:10cloud my judgment.
15:11You're just too pig-headed
15:12to say you've been wrong about him.
15:15It's nothing to do with you.
15:17But I think the best thing
15:18that could possibly happen
15:20to Fimbo
15:20is that he's recalled to Earth
15:22on medical ground.
15:22Why?
15:23Rebecca, just leave it.
15:24Because he's not going to get
15:25this ship or any other.
15:26If he stays on in space,
15:28he'll be a failure
15:28to the end of his days.
15:29That isn't true.
15:30If he goes now,
15:31he'll go with the whole
15:32of Jupiter's system
15:33calling him a hero.
15:34What's this calling?
15:35He is a hero.
15:36Then let him go back to Earth
15:37now with honor.
15:40I have had the most
15:42god-awful time
15:43over the past few months.
15:44Yeah?
15:45Well, it's all over now.
15:46I wonder.
15:47Believe it.
15:48All my life,
15:49I've wanted to be in space.
15:51When I was a kid,
15:52I used to have spaceships
15:53over my bed.
15:54It was the only job
15:55I ever wanted.
15:57The day I left Earth
15:59was the best day of my life.
16:01And then the day
16:02I got the commission
16:02on the Iliad,
16:03that was the second best.
16:04I remember Elliot.
16:06Have I mentioned
16:07to you about Elliot?
16:08He came to me
16:09in the hostel bar
16:09after the interview
16:10and he said,
16:11All right, First Officer.
16:13Mine's a large gin.
16:16You must have been
16:17devastated
16:17when you find out
16:18about your eyes.
16:19Yes.
16:21And that, of course,
16:22is why I went down to Iliad.
16:24Oh?
16:25I didn't care
16:26what happened to me.
16:27I don't believe that.
16:28If they were going
16:29to send me back to Earth,
16:30then it really didn't
16:31matter what happened.
16:34She hasn't even
16:34thought about it.
16:35What's she going to do with it?
16:36I haven't got
16:36the faintest idea.
16:38Put it in a bucket.
16:39We'll probably end up
16:40cutting up towels.
16:41It'll be like
16:41the Middle Ages.
16:44OK, we're ready.
16:45Who wants to volunteer?
16:47I'll go first.
16:48Well, where's Jim?
16:48Isn't he going to be
16:49your Romeo?
16:50He's over there.
16:51Oh, Jim!
16:52Oh, no, no.
16:53I don't want to go first, please.
16:54Oh, for heaven's sake.
16:55You're supposed
16:55to be actors.
16:56All right.
16:58Oh, yes.
16:58Of course.
17:00Which bit do you want to do?
17:01The one we rehearsed.
17:03You should know
17:04your lines by now.
17:06Oh, you don't expect
17:07to snort off by heart,
17:08do you?
17:08No, of course not,
17:09lovey.
17:09You just stand over there.
17:11Give us a nod
17:11when you're ready.
17:14You know what?
17:15I want to do this.
17:16Oh, look at them.
17:17What?
17:18They're supposed
17:18to be star-crossed lovers.
17:20Well, it's early days,
17:21isn't it?
17:22See, I've got two weeks
17:23to turn them
17:24into throbbing sex symbols.
17:27Take it away.
17:29How much more weight
17:30am I going to put on?
17:31It varies somewhere
17:32between about 8 and 18 kilos
17:34with the average
17:35somewhere in about the middle.
17:36Oh, my God.
17:38What am I going to do?
17:39We'll find things
17:40for you to wear.
17:41Things?
17:41I don't want to wear things.
17:43Baggy tops
17:44and stretchy bottoms.
17:45Yeah, like fat old ladies wear.
17:47We'll have to look round
17:48for clothes for the baby, too.
17:49Look round where, Rebecca?
17:51Island Five.
17:51They've had babies
17:52on Island Five.
17:52Yeah, three
17:53in the last five years.
17:54So they'll have grown
17:55out of some
17:55of their clothes by now.
17:57I'm not having my baby
17:58in fourth-hand
17:59American baby clothes.
18:01You know what
18:01they'll be like?
18:02Mickey Mouse
18:03playing American football
18:04all over the front.
18:05Hey, Melody,
18:06you haven't really
18:06got a choice.
18:07I don't want my baby
18:09looking like a monkey
18:09on a stick.
18:11You wouldn't even
18:12understand.
18:16It is.
18:17It is the lark
18:17that sings so out of tune,
18:19straining harsh discords
18:20and unpleasing sharps.
18:21Some say the lark
18:23makes sweet division.
18:24This stuff not so,
18:25for she divided us.
18:27Some say the lark
18:28and lo, the toad
18:29changed us.
18:30She knows the words.
18:31She's very keen.
18:31They had changed voices, too.
18:33Since arm from arm
18:34that voice
18:35started to play,
18:36hunting these hands
18:37will hunt up to the day.
18:38yet.
18:39Who does she want to be?
18:40Sarah thinks it's her duty
18:42to take part in the college
18:43playing.
18:44More light and light,
18:45more dark and dark
18:47our woes.
18:49Fiona, could you
18:49read the nurse?
18:50Oh, oh, sorry,
18:51that's me.
18:52Madam.
18:53Nurse.
18:54Your lady mother
18:54is coming to your chamber.
18:56The day is broke.
18:57Be wary, look about.
18:59Then let day in
19:00and life out.
19:02Farewell.
19:03Farewell.
19:04One kiss
19:05and I'll descend.
19:12I don't fancy him
19:13for Romeo much,
19:14do you?
19:14He looks like the man
19:15who came to mend
19:16the heating system.
19:17What will you do now?
19:19I've put in a call
19:19to Moon Station.
19:21I don't know
19:21what they'll want to do.
19:22Is the IO
19:23operational right?
19:24Oh, you saw it.
19:26They'll be working
19:26on a full assessment
19:27of the new volcano,
19:28but I don't see us
19:29getting back down there
19:30again in my working lifetime.
19:31Does that bother you?
19:32My job is just to fly.
19:34As long as I can do that,
19:35I don't mind where I am.
19:36Oh, Professor.
19:37Ah, I was just
19:39sending a signal.
19:40We've got an audio link
19:41to Space City
19:41via Comsat 5.
19:42Fine.
19:43How are you both?
19:44Fine.
19:48Can't wait to get
19:49to Island 5
19:49and get my eyes
19:50sorted out.
19:51Hmm.
19:52Hmm, what?
19:53I know Nick Klaus.
19:55If he says he thinks
19:55he can cure the problem,
19:57then he can.
19:57He hasn't even seen
19:58Fimbo's notes yet.
20:00Yes, he has.
20:00Christoph sent them
20:01down right away.
20:03I wouldn't fancy
20:04trusting my eyesight.
20:04to a new experimental treatment
20:06without knowing
20:06a lot more about it.
20:08He'll be told
20:08all about it.
20:09If everyone took
20:10that attitude,
20:11there'd never be
20:12any advances
20:12in medical science,
20:13would there?
20:14I just don't fancy
20:15being a guinea pig.
20:16This is not
20:16guinea pig research.

20:32See you at the stardust.
20:34Well done.
20:35Toodlepip, Elliot.
20:37End of message.
20:38What did that mean?
20:40Typical Captain Creasy.
20:41Not a great literary mind.
20:43Is he calling a fool?
20:44Signal to Fimbo Lewis
20:46from Callisto Space Commission.

21:29and Cassandra next, please.
21:31Now, don't forget.
21:33This is passion.
21:35It's love.
21:37It's thwarted,
21:38throbbing emotion.
21:40It's too rash,
21:41too unadvised,
21:43too like lightning.
21:44Okay?
21:45Got it?
21:47I can't understand
21:48why you're not going
21:49to do anything about it.
21:50It really doesn't matter.
21:52Finbo.
21:53Is this the same man
21:54who brought the shuttle
21:55down to the middle
21:55of a volcanic eruption?
21:57Yes.
21:58Rescued five people
22:00and then brought us
22:00all safely back down again?

22:20Yeah.
22:20He hasn't got any
22:21romance in him at all.
22:23Perhaps.
22:23It doesn't show, Angel.
22:25Oh, what did you think?
22:26Oh, I thought you were great,
22:28but I'm not the director.
22:29Well, that's one way
22:30of getting out of it.
22:31Hey, is it my go now?
22:32There isn't anybody else.
