00:01All I'm asking for is this one chance.
00:03Lewis, you don't have to prove anything.
00:05If not to you, then to myself.
00:07This is neither the time nor the place for futile gestures.
00:10I am acting captain of this ship, Professor.
00:13What's to stop me launching the shuttle on my own without going through Compton?
00:15Mr Lewis...
00:16What will you do? Court-martial me?
00:19Do you think I care? Do you think that would stop me?
00:23I know. I can do it.
00:27Well, I can't send Drummond down there again, not straight away.
00:30I've got a plan to bypass the shuttle warning systems.
00:35I must be mad.
00:37All right.
01:07All right.
01:12Petra, stand by for shuttle launch.
01:16He won't get down in that.
01:18If he doesn't, there's five people dead within two hours.
01:23He asked to go.
01:25He must be mad.
01:26He had his reasons.
01:28He'll kill himself, and he'll wreck the shuttle.
01:33Fimbo's insignificant little hide against the lives of the survivors.
01:37A bit callous, even for you.
01:39His words, not mine.
01:41Charles, I tried a dozen times to make a landing,
01:44and every time that the safeties jammed on, that the autopilot took over,
01:48and I turned over...
01:49He found no way to override the safeties.
01:51Petra, comes to entry port.
01:52Mr Lewis.
01:55I've finished the pre-launch check.
01:58Is the launch still due at 11.50?
02:00That is the optimum time.
02:02I want to take a look from the dome.
02:04As you will.
02:06This doesn't reflect very well on me, does it?
02:08No.
02:09Look, it looks as if I didn't have the guts to finish the job,
02:11and now the captain must do it for me.
02:13You did everything that you could.
02:15Anyway, your pride hardly weighs in the balance against five lives.
02:19Yeah, I know that.
02:22Well, we'll just see how he copes when every damn red warning light on the shuttle starts popping.
02:27He'll probably come scuttling back with his tail between his legs.
02:32If he comes back at all.
02:35Ever get the feeling of being followed?
02:37That's weird, that, isn't it?
02:38You hear these footsteps behind, and then when you turn around...
02:42There's nobody there.
02:44Look, I followed the protest until I got caught.
02:46It wasn't my fault I got caught.
02:48Then you get a sort of funny buzzing in the ear.
02:52Fiona, I'm trying to talk to you in a rational manner!
03:00Hello.
03:01Fimbo.
03:04Looks nasty down there.
03:07Yeah.
03:09I thought I'd better take a last look.
03:12The shuttle's a sturdy old tub, but the view from the command module isn't all it could be.
03:17You can change your mind.
03:19Yes, but the poor devils down there can't.
03:23Anyway, a chance for me to do something worthwhile with my life.
03:26Oh, come on, Fimbo. We've been through all this.
03:29Going blind or going back to Earth half-blind and completely useless.
03:33It isn't like that.
03:34Six months' time, they won't even trust me with a mega-mark trolley.
03:38Look, just stop feeling sorry for yourself, or you'll go down there and do something totally stupid.
03:41I'm going down there in a positive frame of mind, don't worry.
03:44Yes, of course you are.
03:47Yes, well, I'd better be making a move now.
03:51Yeah.
03:52Be lucky, Fimbo.
03:55It's funny, I...
03:57thought I had something to say, but...
04:00I forgot what it was.
04:02Oh.
04:04Anyway, thanks for everything.
04:06Everything?
04:08300 mls of mushroom stroganoff?
04:10No.
04:21It's Delta V, the chemical plant.
04:24Could be the underground storage cylinders of exploring.
04:28That settles it.
04:29Lewis has got to stay put.
04:30I doubt it.
04:31Look, nobody could survive that.
04:33You may be right.
04:35Petra, shipboard announcement.
04:39This is Professor Brelin.
04:41Shipboard announcement to students and staff.
04:44In about 30 minutes, Captain Lewis will take the relief shuttle down to Io to attempt a landing.
04:50I don't need to tell you how desperate the situation now is for the people down there.
04:55There are nine volcanoes active on Io at this moment.
04:59Three of them in the North Polar region in the area of the inter-world base.
05:04I'm sure we all wish Captain Lewis the very best of luck.
05:09That's all.
05:14Oh, hello.
05:15Gimbo.
05:16You're going to attempt a rescue?
05:18Am I?
05:18We heard.
05:19Well, is it just a routine sort of operation?
05:22Just a bit dangerous?
05:24No, no, no, no. Not at all.
05:25Run-of-the-mill sort of thing, also, as officers are trained for.
05:28Yes, well, that sort of thing.
05:32I'm glad you're all here.
05:34I may not be seeing you around for a while.
05:37Fimbo.
05:37The only time people say that is when they're going somewhere to die.
05:40Usually from frostbite in the Antarctic.
05:44Yes.
05:45It's quite warm in Io's polar region at the moment, actually.
05:48Quite a lot of heat venting from its interaction with Europa.
05:51You've all been learning about Io's internal structures, I'm sure.
05:54The way the moon is forced to oscillate around its structural planes.
05:57Pilot to shuttle for pre-breathing.
06:00Launch T-minus 25.
06:03What I wanted to say is that...
06:06When I get back from Io, I have to go back to Earth.
06:10Fimbo.
06:11Yes?
06:11You hate Earth.
06:13No, no, no, that's a bit strong.
06:16Bit of a health problem.
06:17The old I is playing me up.
06:19Airlock closes in five seconds.
06:21I don't have to tell you that I'll be thinking about you.
06:25All of you.
06:29Bye, Fimbo, our buddy.
06:30Break a leg.
06:32Oh, shut up.
06:33You still haven't told me what I did that was so terrible.
06:36The thing is, Tim...
06:37Yeah?
06:37You're a spineless little toe.
06:39Yeah, but that's not a crime.
06:40You're a turncoat.
06:41Well, what about the others?
06:42What about Anna Bergani?
06:43Anna didn't help them, did she?
06:45Anna didn't help them use Petra.
06:46Well, what else could I do?
06:47All the students despise you as a traitor.
06:49A traitor?
06:50Yes.
06:51I infiltrate the enemy's stronghold,
06:52I get up to all sorts of sabotage,
06:54and then you brand me a traitor.
06:56I mean, who rescued Daniel and Philippe from the dome?
06:58I ain't got Petra to turn off our heating.
07:00Well, what else could I do?
07:01You should have stood up to Breland.
07:02Oh, yeah.
07:03The rest of us did.
07:04Collectively, Fiona, collectively.
07:05But I got the benefit of his undivided attention.
07:08You're weak, Timothy Shaw.
07:09Weak and ruled by greed.
07:11Melody!
07:11You sacrificed your ideals for a couple of mouthfuls of swill.
07:14I haven't got any ideals.
07:15That I can believe.
07:16Anyway, it wasn't swill.
07:18It was cold mushroom stroganoff.
07:19I was hungry.
07:20We were all hungry, Tim.
07:22Oh, look, push off, Tim.
07:23You're no longer welcome round here.
07:34I can't let you do this, old son.
07:38What the hell are you trying to prove?
07:40He's not trying to prove anything.
07:43He's trying to save lives.
07:44Forget it, Lewis.
07:45You're not cut out to be a hero.
07:47Captain Lewis.
07:49If that shuttle starts to burn up, don't expect us to save you.
07:53Don't even think about it.
07:54We can't risk both shuttles.
07:57You're mad, Vimbo.
07:58Out of your tiny mind.
08:00You haven't got a prayer.
08:03Okay, Captain.
08:04Confirm status.
08:06All internal systems green.
08:08Petra, close airlock outer door.
08:10Airlock outer door closed.
08:13Petra, close shuttle hatch doors.
08:14Hatch doors closed.
08:16Setting frequency to 14.09.
08:19Support links disengaged.
08:22Shuttle to internal systems.
08:23All systems go for release.
08:26Confirm, please.
08:27All systems go for release.
08:29Goodbye, Elia.
08:36Goodbye, Mr. Lewis.
08:40Petra, put a call through to Victoria Frobisher.
08:44Professor.
08:45Victoria, we are holding course at 10 kilometers altitude.
08:49If the atmospheric conditions deteriorate, I want to know about it.
08:53All right.
08:55Try not to worry about Vimbo.
08:57Our first thought must be for the safety of this ship.
09:02Is Commander Drummond still with you?
09:04No, he left five minutes ago.
09:08He thinks Vimbo's going to die.
09:11He thinks Vimbo wants to die,
09:13and he thinks Vimbo's being unfair on the rest of us.
09:16Petra, general shipboard announcement.
09:20This is Professor Brennan.
09:22The Ilya is now holding very close orbit around Io,
09:26awaiting the return of Captain Lewis and the inter-world personnel.
09:30I'm sure all our thoughts and our prayers are with Captain Lewis, Vimbo,
09:36during this most critical time.
09:40You're looking at the shuttle.
09:42We have the one waiting for
09:43and recommend you come to move through the territory.
10:08Bex, you wanted to see me? Yes, Philippe. Sit down.
10:13Have you settled your differences with the professor?
10:16Brelin. Wonderful guy. Kind, compassionate, caring.
10:19I see you haven't. Still, what the heck, I won't be here forever.
10:22So I understand. Sorry?
10:26I've had a call from Island Five. They're checking on your social and medical records.
10:29Computer error. I applied to the American University before I joined Columbus and they turned me down.
10:34Did they say why? Probably saw me as a Bolshevik.
10:36I wonder what gave them that idea.
10:39Anyway, it seems they're prepared to reconsider.
10:42I'm getting a place after all.
10:44Space law and space economics at Runnymede College, if you're interested.
10:49Tempting. The Harvard and Yale of the asteroid belt.
10:52The Island Five Pleasure Dome.
10:53The Pleasure Dome. Now, how could I forget the Pleasure Dome?
10:56Well, look, you don't have to decide straight away, but...
11:00I'll have a little think.
11:05We're still ten kilometres above the surface, keeping a close eye on the atmospheric variations.
11:10Our shields will handle this intensity no problem.
11:13Anything from Lewis?
11:15He's been out of comms now for over an hour.
11:17Check the link?
11:18Yeah.
11:20I suppose another signal from IO is too much to hope for.
11:22Oh, like what? A message in a bottle?
11:24As far as we know, they still have comms.
11:26They're all dead, Charles.
11:28Probably.
11:30Give Lewis another hour.
11:32Hmm.
11:33And then what?
11:34We can raise him. We'll order him back.
11:36I suppose he can't hear us.
11:45Coffee?
11:46Oh, thanks.
11:50I don't suppose you've heard.
11:54I seem to have been here before.
11:56Yeah?
11:56When you took the shuttle down to G33.
11:59Yeah, well, I hope Lewis hasn't got a stir away.
12:01I didn't think we'd see you again.
12:04Were you worried?
12:06I was more worried about the student.
12:09Yes, well, he would have been.
12:16They're trying to get through to us from IO.
12:21Interred to Ilya.
12:23Interred to Ilya.
12:25Please come in.
12:26Ilya to IO.
12:27Go ahead.
12:29Petra, find best frequency and hold.
12:32Searching.
12:34IO, please change to 1612.
12:39Please respond, IO.
12:41Hello.
12:42Listen.
12:43We have a relief shuttle still trying to land.
12:47The bus life support system is now extremely critical.
12:51Petra, find best frequency and hold, damn you.
12:55Oxygen is almost exhausted.
12:57We have no more heat packs and it's cold.
13:01So very, very cold.
13:03Have you made any contact with our shuttle?
13:05Negative, Ilya.
13:06We are still trying to reach you.
13:08We are still trying to reach you.
13:11Bless you.
13:14On behalf of my crew, I'd like to thank you for all your efforts.
13:19If you'll be kind enough to patch us into your computer,
13:23you would like to record some personal calls?
13:28Yes, of course.
13:29Goodbye, Ilya.
13:32Petra, stand by to patch in personal messages on this frequency.
13:39Hippie?
13:42Very dignified and ladylike.
13:44Hardly your style.
13:45Oh, I don't know.
13:47You could always lend me one of your long flowery dresses.
13:49It'd take more than a dress, Fiona.
13:51All right, then, um, bouffant.
13:53Mid-20th century go really well with a strapless evening gown.
13:56Yuck.
13:58Um, ponytail, urchin, Austrian plaits.
14:02Help me, Mel.
14:03Oh, I'd love to, Fee, but I've got a mound of revision.
14:07I suppose I could always tint it.
14:09Oberyn Coral or Miranda Rash.
14:11Oh, I give up.
14:12That's right.
14:13No man is worth the trouble.
14:16I'm doing it for myself.
14:17Oh, yeah?
14:19Loss of appetite, daydreaming, talking in your sleep.
14:23Since when?
14:25You're falling in love, Fee.
14:27You think?
14:28Don't do it.
14:30It'll end in tears.
14:31I can't hurt myself, Mel.
14:34You fall in love, don't you?
14:35You don't jump.
14:37Besides which, we've got dense sulphur clouds,
14:40increased radiation levels
14:41and debris thrown up from the chemical plant.
14:43Everything but the kitchen sink.
14:45We need to move to a higher orbit.
14:47We can't, though, can we?
14:48We can't leave Lewis.
14:50We haven't heard from him for two and a half hours.
14:52I haven't heard from him at all.
14:54It's a matter of honour, Charles.
14:55When a fellow pilot goes off in a shuttle,
14:57you make sure you're there when he gets back.
14:59There are 60 people on this ship.
15:02I am quite aware of that.
15:03It's too dangerous down here.
15:05Doppler analysis indicates radial expansion of the sulphur cloud.
15:08We need to get higher.
15:09It's your decision, Commander Drummond.
15:12You're acting captain now.
15:13If my decision meant anything,
15:14Lewis would never have been allowed to go down in the first place.
15:22Petra, vector 1098 and hold at 450 kilometres.
15:28Sorry for him, old son.
15:37after that i swore i'd never look at another frenchman oh come on mel they're not all like
15:42john francois they're all charmers fee till you get to really know them no philippe's different
15:48he cares about people yeah i suppose he's rather nice don't you rather make the most of him
15:57as soon as you think he'll be around forever he'll go oh i can hardly get him to notice me
16:02half the time he's always working do you think if you wore cardboard covers and sat between two
16:07bookings don't tempt me it's the only thing i haven't tried gabby just the person i was hoping
16:13to see oh yeah we go back a long way you and i oh cape york on battle moon station
16:20we've been around
16:20haven't we no it seems everyone's your friend melody byron fiona jim oh poor philippe i've been
16:28neglecting you what i'm really trying to say is

16:50so uh when will you leave when we get back to callisto i suppose
16:57wow we must have a farewell party party glad i mean so much to you
17:04party to end all parties
17:11why did it have to be me don't be silly why did i have to be me it wasn't your
17:17decision it was
17:18mine what if he was searching for us i mean what if he's trying to find us now he should
17:23have never
17:23been allowed to go down in the first place it was stupid infantile heroics he's probably dead now
17:28okay it's such a horrible way to die isn't it stranded in space it's how you lost your father isn't
17:37it on the
17:37cobernatus
17:43he's landed he's landed on io all personnel to acceleration stations all personnel to acceleration stations
17:53petra estimate orbit time to set to d4 at present velocity orbit time equals t plus two minutes 10
18:01altitude altitude equals to 180 k what do you propose orbit at a safe altitude then
18:09drop tutorial contact area drop how long as long as we do it is finbo all right
18:15petra replay last message channel 12
18:20shuttle landed evacuating shuttle 2.18 bearing west 250 meters evacuating now
18:29mean altitude 90 k time equals one minute 40
18:34petra reduce speed to 40 percent send out homing signals
18:39god this is cutting it fine
18:41mean altitude 824 time equals one minute 30 petra override amber sentinels hold at 24k
18:51oh sarah just do it there are worse things in life than being stuck in a cabin with belinda skin
18:57and
18:57being asked to pray for our safe deliverance for god's sake sarah just pray
19:03petra altitude 20k maintain velocity at 40 percent ram pressure alarm what the hell caused that
19:10run through the base of the sulfur plume and sepia self petra damage report heat and radiation shield
19:16intact all systems and subsystems nominal negative response to homing signals
19:23better luck on the next troll you could have through that again
19:26we'll go in on a different vector give that plume a wide berth
19:29i think we'll all appreciate that commander
19:33open
19:35gabriella get back in your cab and get strapped in
19:37i was on my own i can't stand it on my own i've called philippe he's been called onto the

19:42just get in the top bunk hurry up
19:43okay please
19:44please remain as acceleration
19:46oh god i'm not going up there what if the arm's stopping will use gravity again
19:49it won't matter where you are will it
19:50just get in with me quick
19:52just for your interest ladies and gentlemen on the scanner at the moment we can see a plume of yellow
19:56and green gas
19:58spectroscopically identified as so2 which has ascended 160 miles in less than six minutes
20:04perhaps the mathematicians amongst you would like to while away the time by calculating the escape velocity required
20:11i feel sick
20:12you dare
20:13oh i hate being frightened you just don't know how i hate being frightened
20:16oh god i wish philippe was here
