00:05Your new post is as First Officer, land-based on Moon Pacifier.
00:11Your salary will remain unchanged,
00:13although you will no longer receive ship-based Flying Officer's extra allowance.
00:18Further details will be sent to you.
00:20End of message.
00:38End of message.
00:56You could do something if you wanted to.
00:58You could do something if you wanted to.
01:00what did you think of the courgettes like all the other courgettes I've ever
01:05had in space tasteless you're asking me to help him stay on here against my
01:11better judgment is it better for Finbo to have a job on pacified than to stay on
01:15the ilia it's a move change of scene responsibility anyway space command's
01:20decision who advises space command nobody advises they take soundings don't they
01:25sometimes what did you say I didn't say he should be given a land-based job but I
01:31cannot tell you my confidential everything's changed now oh he's bound
01:36to get a commendation at the very least for getting us off IO that doesn't
01:40alter his suitability for overall command how can you be so hard on him I know
01:44him a great deal better than you do do you know how he feels about a land-based
01:47job I know he doesn't like the idea he'd rather be dead he loves flying it's the
01:53only thing he cares about he saved our lives for God's sake
02:03Oh
02:04come on what are you doing in that getting lost
02:10great
02:17what do you think yes all right it doesn't look all right Fiona I look
02:24enormously fat no well you're gonna get even bigger
02:27nobody told me I was gonna look like this
02:43go away I don't want to see anyone
02:50why didn't you tell me I've only just heard because I'm still trying to come to terms with it I
02:55think it's awful of them and I'm going to say so
02:57well that won't do any good with it no I don't suppose it will be an awful lot of
03:01shuttling of course that's what you do on pacify shuttling people up and down when a
03:05spaceship comes there's no reason you couldn't stay here it's just stupid
03:07bureaucracy still I suppose it's better than going back to earth have you spoken to
03:12Brelin no well go on there well I can't talk to him now can I probably be
03:16busy Fimbo there will always be some excuse just do it
03:22hey hi what are you drinking chocolate hey I thought you and Daniel had a bottle of bootleg
03:29whiskey every night well we did till all this happened with him and Melody
03:33he's behaving like a married man yeah well what's wrong with that it's not natural
03:37of course it is
03:42I don't think I'll be any good as Romeo do you yeah why not of course you should
03:47well well Byron said he wants someone with more soul oh oh well look I'll see you
03:53tomorrow hey do you want to go for a walk first we can call in on Daniel all right
04:08it's not very modern an old ship Natasha I can see that but it's the people on it who
04:14count isn't it always good people struggling against the odds seems such a waste
04:20are we talking about Fimbo Lewis again yes why he just saved my life I know that
04:27look what is the point of training people like Fimbo Lewis and then sticking them on
04:32pacify to run shuttles around I may have after all I'd have been dead for 24 hours now if it
04:38wasn't for Fimbo
04:39the Ilya is having a new captain it's a normal practice to appoint a new first officer with a new
04:44captain
04:44it's rather a petty rule no it's done for good reasons a first officer who's been passed over is bound
04:50to feel resentment towards a new superior officer not always true look at Fimbo now selking in his tent he's
04:56upset I'd be upset I'd be furious I believe it
05:02yes can I come and see you please not now let him can I wait till morning
05:09I'd rather see you now perhaps I could come to your no I don't want Mercedes disturbed
05:16I'll come to your cabin in about an hour
05:20nobody understands anything about it
05:22well what
05:23I don't feel like a student anymore
05:26I want to be with other people like me
05:28what do you mean people like you
05:31pregnant

05:32there aren't any pregnant people this side of Island 5
05:35it's not fair

06:05yeah well Bulldog's taking over the midnight watch so don't worry
06:08he shouldn't be asking you to do anything

06:10bored in the cabin
06:12haven't seen you since breakfast
06:13it's a bit of a tactic
06:15how's Lieutenant Kovitsky
06:17oh she seems to be recovering very well
06:19oh good
06:19she's a remarkable woman
06:21very competent
06:22how nice for you
06:23I was hoping to have a word with Drummond
06:25about Lewis
06:27well call him up or go and find him in the club or something
06:29no not really much point
06:32I'll see you later perhaps
06:33after you've finished your watch
06:35all right
06:35if you're not tucked up in bed
06:37after such a hectic day
06:46hey Jim
06:47hmm
06:47you don't want to play Romeo do you
06:49I don't mind
06:51now mind you I don't think you've really got the experience have you
06:53what and you have
06:54yeah
06:55except I don't really want to play Romeo anyway
06:57I mean
06:58look at all the ups and downs I'm having with Melody bless her heart
07:02mind you
07:02it's all part of life's rich pattern now
07:05it's what pregnant women are like
07:07she's a great girlfriend
07:12you ought to get yourself a girlfriend you know
07:14yeah I'll look out for one
07:16well plenty of nice girls on this ship
07:18well I don't want to be the father to the second baby in Jupiter's system
07:21well there's no need to be personal
07:23do you want some whiskey?
07:24have you got some?
07:30oh
07:30hiya
07:31look it's Melody
07:32she can't sleep
07:33oh right
07:34well I'll give you something
07:35why can't she?
07:36she's worried
07:38well she has a lot to be worried about
07:39I know
07:40I mean we all sit here and say everything will be all right
07:42but what do we know?
07:46oh sorry I didn't know you had anyone
07:47that's all right
07:48come on in
07:48no no I've got to dash
07:49Professor Brennan is coming to my cabin
07:52oh great
07:53well you tell him don't take any nonsense
07:54yes
07:54and let me know what he says
07:55yes
07:57yes
08:00Fimbo's been sacked
08:02sacked?
08:03well don't tell anyone
08:04well not exactly sacked
08:05he's been given a job as first officer land based on pacify
08:08well you can imagine how much he wants that
08:09well after he's just saved all those people off IO
08:11I don't believe it
08:14give this to Melody
08:15and tell her everything will be all right
08:21what are you doing?
08:23it's not work is it?
08:23no Byron's asked me to work out how many people we actually need for Romeo and Juliet
08:28we've only got eight possible so far
08:30you're taking this all very seriously aren't you?
08:32why don't you help us?
08:34oh it's all right for Daniel
08:35is it?
08:36yeah
08:36he can run around the ship as normal
08:38he can audition for the play
08:40you can audition for the play
08:41you could be Juliet's mother
08:43I'd look pretty stupid wouldn't I?
08:45look I know it can't be much more than you Melody
08:47but it's all perfectly normal
08:48there's no reason why you can't be pregnant and act
08:51the whole system's ridiculous Fiona
08:52why can't babies be incubated in nice warm artificial wombs?
08:57well they can can't they if you go back to Mars on Moon Station
08:59well why are we so primitive
09:01if we're meant to be at the frontiers of science
09:03anyway artificial wombs are almost certain to be banned
09:06because of the psychological damage they do
09:08who told you that?
09:12has he decided yet on whether to go to the American University?
09:16yeah
09:17he's going
09:20you're never going to believe what they've done
09:22have you got my pill?
09:23yeah
09:23they've gone and sat Fimbo
09:24why?
09:25they can't have
09:26Bex just told me
09:27they've given him a job on pacifier running the shuttle about
09:31poor Fimbo
09:36I thought I'd find you in here
09:38so beautiful out there
09:40you sound like Gabby
09:42I wish I was more like her
09:44she's got such faith in what she's doing
09:46she knows exactly what she wants
09:48and you don't?
09:50not even sure I should stay in space
09:53perhaps I should go back to Earth
09:54and do something useful
09:56something worthwhile
09:58wouldn't you miss it?
10:00yeah I suppose so
10:03will you miss me?
10:06no I will
10:09I know he didn't go because of you

10:16trying to carry on a relationship long distance
10:18it just wouldn't work
10:19no
10:22we'll keep in touch though, won't we?
10:24of course
10:39I don't understand the universe anyway
10:41we're not put here to understand
10:43yes we are
10:44we're here to live
10:45what does that mean?
10:47well in my case
10:48it means Melody and the baby
10:49and generally having a good time
10:51good for you
10:54Jim your trouble is

10:56to go out and get what you want
10:57I don't know what I want
10:59well
10:59for a start
11:02why don't you try asking somebody out

11:05well
11:05who do you fancy?
11:08come on
11:09it's obviously fancies you
11:10who?

11:17no
11:17it's not a sideways move
11:19it is
11:20you're not demoted
11:21I'm having to take a salary cut
11:23your permanent shipboard allowance
11:25because that's all
11:26it's not like you'd worry about money
11:28I'm not worried about the money
11:30that's the whole point
11:31I care about this job
11:33this is my home
11:34I've lived here for five years
11:35I like being with students
11:37I enjoy lecturing
11:38I won't be doing much lecturing on Pacify
11:40will I?
11:40it's possible
11:41there'll be plenty of courses attached to the space observatory
11:44I want to stay here
11:45I don't want to go to Pacify
11:47and run a shuttle
11:48and live in a unit
11:50and never see any of my friends
11:51it's all right
11:52I've never asked you anything before

13:03although it's probably all his fault anyway
13:05well, I'm glad the great gantry tube protest has increased your political awareness, Sarah
13:10considering your idea of action was to lie in the warmest bed, eating and drinking
13:14I really don't care what you think of my politics

16:41First Officer Lewis is employed by the European Space Service
16:44and under the authority of Space Command Moon Station
16:46I don't have anything to do with the European Space Service or Moon Station

18:26and she barged in and took him
18:28that's what she's like
18:33he didn't even want to know
18:35I expect her to have to trip authorship in the first place
18:38well, I think you've done all you can
18:39yeah, well, Malady wasn't much help
18:41I mean, she always has a go at him when she sees him
18:43well, she's a very impulsive girl, Malady
18:45yeah
18:45she was in a foul mood
18:47because there's this awful smock thing of Rebecca's that we've always learned
18:50what, the lacy one?
18:51yeah, it looks like a Victorian lampshade
18:53well, what about it?
18:55well, Rebecca only's given it to her
18:57you should have seen her
18:57she nearly went into labour on the spot

19:23I don't suppose there's anything you can do
19:26students
19:26I don't suppose Space Command would be interested in anything you have to say or do, would they, Charles?
19:31I'd like to try
19:32would they, Charles?
19:34Mr. Lewis, what's our current orbital status?

20:15Charles Brelin to ESSHQ, Head of Admin

20:21I urge you to reconsider your decision
20:24to remove First Officer Fimbo Lewis
20:26from his present post on board the Ilya
20:28to First Officer based on Pacify
20:32Lewis has always fulfilled his functions here
20:35including teaching, to my satisfaction
20:38and he is quite willing to serve under a new captain
20:42he is very anxious to remain as First Officer on board the Ilya
20:46and in light of his recent admirable rescue of five personnel from Io
20:52at imminent danger to his own life
20:54I believe his views deserve consideration
20:58please reply immediately
21:00message ends
21:01well done, Charles
21:02I should do the training
21:03well done, darling
21:10maybe Sarah doesn't realise that you and Jim were getting close
21:13oh, she knew all right
21:14when did you last have something to eat?
21:16oh, I don't know
21:17well, you weren't at supper and you weren't at breakfast either
21:19I thought nobody noticed
21:21of course we had
21:22I'm going to need you for the play, aren't I?
21:24I didn't do a very good audition
21:25yes, you did
21:26I didn't
21:27because I was upset about him and Sarah
21:29and I couldn't concentrate
21:30when he kept looking at her all the time
21:32Anna
21:32you did a great audition
21:34yeah?
21:35yeah
21:35well, maybe it was because I was sad
21:37and it was a sad piece
21:39perhaps
21:39because when you have really suffered
21:41that comes through, doesn't it?
21:42yeah, I'm sure Byron will want you for Juliet
21:44how could I possibly work for Jim?
21:46don't worry
21:46Jim won't be Romeo
22:00hey, yeah
22:01you don't want to give me a hand with this, do you?
22:03I'm trying to loosen these seams
22:05so that Maladie can get into it
22:07but I can see it's not going to be easy
22:09I want to talk to you
22:11about Anna
22:12Yeah, what was the matter with her? She was crying, wasn't she?
22:15Yes, because of you.
22:18What do you mean?
22:19You and Jim.
22:20What?
22:21Oh, come on, I saw you.
22:23Saw what?
22:24In the Galileo.
22:25We were having a coffee.
22:27Anyway, what's that got to do with Anna?
22:29Anna says that she and Jim were more or less going out together.
22:32Well, they did go to the dance together and they auditioned together
22:34and then you came along and just pinched Jim right from under her nose.
22:38But I haven't even...
22:38I know Anna can be difficult sometimes, but she has got a kind heart
22:42and she's really fond of Jim.
22:44And it was just a bit mean of you to do that, wasn't it?
