DepEd urged not to remove music from school curriculum

Dr. Alexandra Chua, dean of the Conservatory of Music at the University of Santo Tomas, urges the Department of Education not to remove music from the basic education curriculum, warning that doing so would limit access to the arts. Speaking at a workshop for the National Arts Month celebration in Palo, Leyte, on Feb. 18, 2026, Chua said the possible removal of music and arts subjects would make the industry exclusive to those who can afford private training. Chua also expressed concern over the growing use of artificial intelligence in music production, noting that AI-generated music lacks human emotion and creativity.

00:00So I think we really have to rethink yung ating Department of Education
00:06because the MAPE is also now being revised to be a matatag curriculum
00:11wherein music is just relegated to social studies.
00:18And you start music at great form, and that's too late already.
00:23You know, to be able to learn to...
00:26Kahit mga different exercises and yoga exercises,
00:30that's aptly early on training already in music.
00:35And there are studies that when you study music,
00:38yung inyong critical thinking, it develops.
00:44Baka nga yung ating focus on just mat and silence.
00:49Pero as of now, bumabababalit ang ating.
00:53The highest form of matematics is actually a music.
00:59Yes.
01:00Makikita nyo, you memorize a piece.
01:03You can memorize a book of concerto.
01:05You know children can memorize a book of concerto, perform.
01:09Ang memory nila, grabe, ang nag-re-training in terms of music.
01:12So maybe, in the summer, to really think, why are we removing music in our education system?
01:21We want everyone to have access to music.
01:24Hindi naman dahat merong acumen for talent in music.
01:28But for those who have, then we have to support them.
01:32No? So, with that, it's so difficult at what point if you don't understand.
01:38So, I don't appreciate yung tanyang sinabi na, we really need it na lang to, I know, AI.
01:44You just put in the text and then a whole song would pop up.
01:49But there is no human element in it.
01:58So, what is the creativity in that?
02:01So, at an early age, dapat ang music-related creativity in all the arts should be honest.
02:08So, dapat na maka-importante po nun.
02:11So, I think this is what we would want.
02:15Music ng Pilipinas and of course, NCCA is here to lead along into the importance of arts
02:22in the development of the next generation.
02:25Na-munain mo, kayo, na may estudyante.
02:29So, kasi hindi naman tanong po eh.
02:31But, as what you know, you remove arts, you remove music, you remove our own identity.
02:38Mawawala na po tayo.
02:39No? So, we should actually train.
02:43You should be able to look and to...
02:46Ang nubal tayo.
02:47Si nubal tayo.
02:48And you will be looking for that.
02:50And you will find that answer.
03:10Thank you very much.
03:21You
