00:02Thank you so much.
00:03Well, actually, Fred Destin wanted to stay a little more with us,
00:05but he's right, because you're here on the right place
00:09if you want to have your daily dose of innovation on Breaking Tech.
00:13Now, I'm joined live by Stéphane Ferret-Beaumont,
00:17your vice president for innovation and smart mobility at Alstom.
00:22And artificial intelligence, again, we just see it with Fred Destin
00:25a couple of seconds ago, has a huge potential
00:28for so many different industries.
00:31Could you all know some of the way AI can benefit rail transportation?
00:36It's a great question.
00:38And as you said, I mean, artificial intelligence
00:40is now taking the whole industry to the next level.
00:43We in rail, we've been engaged with artificial intelligence for a while now
00:48on topics like optimizing the control laws,
00:51optimizing the supervisory control of the trains
00:55at, you know, nationwide level, network-wide level
00:58of a typical territory, I would say.
01:03And some other applications, like typically in the maintenance,
01:08where we have a wonderful demonstration of a robot dog
01:12who is helping the maintenance people to figure out
01:16how to make sure that when we are bringing back a train
01:19to the service, everything is okay.
01:22So the robot dog would just watch at everything,
01:26every part, every screws, everything,
01:29so that everything is really ready for prime time.
01:33And that's the kind of thing that we do within Alstom.
01:36We are baking the domain knowledge of the mobility system
01:39and the rail system together with artificial intelligence
01:41and using some other means like robotics to make it happen.
01:45That's great.
01:46Yeah, that is great.
01:47You definitely got me at robot dog, to be honest.
01:49Now, we live in an increasingly digital world
01:53and rails is definitely no exception.
01:55In that context, what is the importance of cybersecurity
01:58when it comes to our railway systems?
02:01It's huge.
02:03Cybersecurity is for us a key topic.
02:06As soon as we touch the world of software,
02:10as soon as we touch the world of data,
02:12artificial intelligence, all that things,
02:14cybersecurity needs to stand side by side.
02:17You know what?
02:18In rail industry, we are dealing with critical infrastructure.
02:23Therefore, we take cybersecurity very seriously for our customers.
02:27And as I said, you know, it starts from the beginning of the design,
02:32making cybersecurity by design,
02:34making sure that everything is protected
02:36so that at the end of the day,
02:38we're able to comply with the law
02:40because that's by law that we need to make sure
02:42that we are delivering the service.
02:44And at the end of the day,
02:45we're also delivering the operational availability
02:48because, you know, you don't want to be stuck by your train,
02:52which has been hacked.
02:54Even if safety is not, you know, involved,
02:59but, you know, the lack of service,
03:01the lack of operability is at stake here.
03:03So cybersecurity is really part of it
03:05so that we are delivering at the end of the day
03:07the mobility service to our customers.
03:09Well, definitely safety and cybersecurity first.
03:13Alstom is already a world leader in the driverless metro.
03:17The next challenge is to make regional and freight trains autonomous.
03:21What are the challenges when making this transition?
03:25Because, again, I mean, it's got to be massive.
03:27It is massive.
03:28And as you said, we are a world leader on a, you know, driverless metro.
03:32So I can tell you that we are in June 23.
03:36Yeah, we are.
03:37In June 03, I was a young engineer,
03:40or younger engineer delivering one of the most advanced metro at that time,
03:47driverless metro.
03:47That was in Singapore.
03:48And I'm very proud of it.
03:49That's part of my baby.
03:50But now, you know, when you are moving from metros
03:53to the main line, the freight, whatever,
03:55it's all about making sure that the train is having perception capability.
03:59You need to be aware.
04:01It's not only, how can I say, the usual way of doing things.
04:06It's perceiving the obstacle, perceiving the environment,
04:08perceiving everything which goes around
04:10so that you can deliver the driverless or the autonomous train.
04:14And it's also a way to make sure that all the functions
04:19that typically a passenger or a freight train would allow would be at stake.
04:24The good thing is we're on rail.
04:27So the rail is helping.
04:29However, we are, again, as we said just earlier,
04:33sticking to a high level of performance from a cyber perspective,
04:37from a safety perspective, and that's how we are progressing.
04:40We are progressing.
04:42It's going to come.
04:43However, we take it very seriously
04:46because we need also to make sure that we'll get the homologation
04:51by the authorities so that ultimately they are able to bake
04:55the autonomous trains into their rule of operation.
04:59Well, AV are definitely coming, but you need to play by the book, of course.
05:04Now, to empower the entire society and rail industry with further innovation,
05:12you definitely need to look out for new partnerships,
05:14and that happens through startups and scale-ups.
05:17Absolutely.
05:18Absolutely.
05:19You know, we can't do that alone.
05:21It's all an ecosystem that we need to animate.
05:25Startups and scale-ups are part of it.
05:26We could mention the academics.
05:29We could mention all the groups, blah, blah, blah.
05:30But startups, you know, they bring the energy.
05:33They bring the agility.
05:36They bring, you know, the way to make it much quicker.
05:41And we need to take the advantage of that.
05:43We obviously need to go there with our eyes wide open.
05:46There are plenty of things that we need to figure out, you know,
05:49to the benefit of everyone.
05:51Intellectual property is going to be another one.
05:52But at the end of the day, it's going to be beneficial to both of the partners.
05:58And that's what we need to make sure.
06:00And we are structuring this kind of collaboration.
06:04And, you know, we are getting there.
06:06It's delivering some results.
06:09And it's very exciting to be here.
06:11And, by the way, we also have a bunch of our startup on our booth
06:15that we show how we work with them
06:18and how we make, at the end of the day, a better mobility for everyone.
06:22Well, innovation on rails definitely results.
06:25Thank you so much for talking to us here on Breaking Tech.
06:30We just actually dived a couple seconds ago in AV.
06:34Well, we're going to talk about EV
06:36because the rise of electric vehicle is putting at its core
06:40the battle for better batteries.
06:42Anna Kowalska has more for us.
