00:00Now, talking about consumers, up next, we will be all about catering to all and diverse beauty needs.
00:11Now, or how the positive use of technology can cater to all these needs.
00:16Now, here to talk about the inclusive future of the beauty industry, we have Nicolas Hieronymus, CEO of L'Oréal
00:26Group,
00:26joined by Amy Abernethy, President of Product Development and Chief Medical Officer at Virely, an Alphabet Precision Health company.
00:35They will both unveil three breakthrough projects and explore how open innovation can help companies innovate faster.
00:44Welcome.
00:56Good morning, everyone.
00:57Call me.
00:58Good morning.
00:59Welcome.
01:00It's a pretty impressive room with a lot of movement.
01:03Almost feels like Beyoncé at the Stade de France.
01:07But don't worry, I won't sing.
01:09I'm very happy to be here.
01:10Last year, I came.
01:12I actually went to see Beyoncé's concert at the Stade de France.
01:15And what impressed me most is she has this huge horse coming out of the main screen on stage.
01:20So I brought my own little animal that I introduced to you last year when I came.
01:25I'm supposed to have some slides here.
01:28Thank you.
01:29This is my unicornus Rex, whom I introduced last year.
01:32So just a little word on this animal whom you can see at our stand.
01:37It's the blend of a 114-year-old, strong, powerful Tyrannosaur and a unicorn with speed, agility and innovation.
01:47And that's what we are doing at L'Oreal as we are transforming into a beauty tech company.
01:52I introduced to you this last year.
01:54And clearly, today, I'm going to talk about how we are supercharging our beauty tech with new technologies,
02:01with artificial intelligence, of course, and much more.
02:05And that's what you're going to do.
02:06It's true that today, and you've heard it in previous presentation,
02:09there are lots of discussions about how tech can be positive, but also about the dangers of tech.
02:18The tech that can be, you know, whether it's about ethics, whether it's about individual property,
02:23whether it's about deep fakes.
02:25There's lots of questions about the role of generative AI in particular.
02:29And it's true at L'Oreal, we take a lot of attention, we pay a lot of attention to these
02:33topics.
02:34We work on the ethics of our algorithms.
02:36We work with our partners to make sure that all the technology we use is prevented from all these negative
02:42biases.
02:43But at the same time, what I want to talk to you about today is tech for humans and by
02:48humans.
02:48That's what we work on at L'Oreal.
02:50We are really determined to leverage technology to improve beauty results
02:56and to bring to 8 billion consumers around the world beauty for them, tailor-made to them.
03:03It's about personalized beauty.
03:05That's what we call beauty for each.
03:07At the same time, technology is also a fantastic tool to work on more global issues on the planet, on
03:16sustainability.
03:16And that's what we call beauty for all.
03:19So I invite you, if you have time after all these conferences, to visit the L'Oreal booth
03:24where you can experiment all these new innovations that are either addressing personalization
03:30or sustainability and working around the planet.
03:34Some of these innovations that you see here on screen, and there's just a few examples.
03:40As far as beauty for each is concerned, you see a spot scan from La Roche-Posay
03:45which will allow people to have a very accurate diagnosis of their skin.
03:5040% of adults and 80% of teenagers are suffering from acne.
03:55This is the most accurate and precise way to diagnose not only acne, but to provide two dermatologist-based solutions.
04:03Bromagic from Shuemora allows people with limited hand mobility to design perfect brows,
04:08and it's also combining formula and technology.
04:11And I like particularly the other two.
04:13WaterSaver, which was already introduced last year, but which we are rolling out.
04:17It's a showerhead that reduces consumption of water in hair salons and tomorrow in homes by up to 70%.
04:25So it's already 40 million liters of water that have been saved in the salons where we've installed it.
04:31But we plan to really roll it out in many more.
04:34And Impact Plus is an interesting cooperation with a French startup
04:38that designed a software that allows us to measure the environmental impact of all the tech we use, particularly in
04:46media.
04:47When we advertise on social networks, when we create content,
04:51we want to know the environmental impact of these creations so that we can improve our own footprints.
04:59So these are the innovations we work on.
05:03And I have to say that, and I'm saying this in front of probably many startupers here,
05:09it's not just about in-house creativity.
05:11It's not about in-house innovation.
05:13We work with a very strong and complete ecosystem of open innovation.
05:18These are all the companies, not all because we couldn't fit them all on the screen,
05:22but most of the companies we work with, and they're all helping us develop solutions
05:27for our consumers or for our environmental footprints in a very collaborative way.
05:32And that's a little bit the topic of today's presentation where I'm going to welcome a guest in a few
05:37minutes.
05:38We work with startups of all different kinds.
05:41We work with this Israeli startup, Breezometer, that is working on allergens, UV exposures.
05:46If you have an iPhone and you look at the weather forecast,
05:48there are the guys with the little information on pollen at the bottom of your screen.
05:52We work with these guys to truly understand the interaction between UV allergens and external factors
05:59and skin and skin health.
06:01And working together, we provide solutions for people.
06:04At the same time, we work with another type of startup, Clu,
06:08which is a leading femtech who helps women deal with all the questions they have around hormonal cycles.
06:15And precisely with this startup, again, we work on reconciliating,
06:20on combining the knowledge on external factors, on people's lives and health,
06:25with skin health and with beauty in general.
06:28And again there, it allows us to provide tailor-made solutions for consumers.
06:32So today, we will be talking about a very specific collaboration
06:40because I have three announcements to make, which I'll make in a minute,
06:44of major programs or results we have with L'Oréal.
06:48But they've all been developed with one partner, one very important partner.
06:53They've been developed with Verily, which is an alphabet precision health company.
06:58And to help explain more about these, please welcome on stage Amy Abernathy.
07:05She's President of Product Development and Chief Medical Officer for Verily.
07:10Wonderful.
07:12So Amy, thank you for joining us here in Paris, straight from the USA.
07:16And before we move on to our announcements,
07:19can you tell everybody a little bit more about Verily and what you guys do?
07:23Well, thank you.
07:23And it's an honor and delight to be here with you.
07:26Absolutely awesome.
07:28Verily was born out of Google about seven years ago.
07:31One of our aims is to leverage data in service of unlocking the potential
07:38of personalized and precision health for everyone every day.
07:41We build data and technology solutions and services
07:45that really bring personalized healthcare to life,
07:49a lot like you think about personalized beauty at L'Oréal.
07:53And, you know, just to say, when L'Oréal first proposed to us these concepts,
08:00I must admit, at Verily, we were a little puzzled,
08:04and I must admit, inspired,
08:07because L'Oréal isn't our usual clinical studies partner,
08:11but then, as Verily, we're not the usual clinical studies company.
08:14So it made great sense.
08:15Well, thank you for allowing us in this great project.
08:19And just as you mentioned the importance of data,
08:22this brings me to our first announcement,
08:25the launch of a truly breakthrough study
08:27that is going to lead us into a new era of ultra-personalized products and services.
08:33This will be really made to measure,
08:36but as you're the scientists,
08:38probably you'll be better than I am to explain about it.
08:40We are so excited about this.
08:42After many months of planning,
08:45we're about to start recruiting thousands of individuals from across the United States
08:50into this longitudinal study of skin health across time.
08:56People will be tracked across time,
08:58people of different skin types, diverse backgrounds, lifestyles,
09:03and we'll also be studying biomarkers,
09:05the chemical signatures that help us understand the biology inside the skin cell.
09:12Then what we'll do is correlate those biomarkers with changes in the skin over time,
09:17wrinkles, aging, blemishes,
09:20and ask the question,
09:22how can we understand biomarkers and changes in, for example,
09:26your beauty routine, your lifestyle, climate, sleep, and other factors?
09:34So, sounds exciting, but why is it really different?
09:37Why is it really unique?
09:39Well, you know, this is really a study in the service of cosmetic science,
09:44but we're leveraging the best and the greatest scientific rigor
09:48as it relates to how we would study, for example,
09:51other illnesses or problems in health,
09:54like cardiology, where we have studied across time using epidemiologic science,
10:00questions around lifestyle, diet, exercise, biomarkers, heart cells,
10:06really to now make substantive changes in cardiology.
10:10And the way that I see this,
10:11we're now building the really complete data set
10:14for individualized and personalized beauty
10:16and planning for individualized and tailored interventions in the future.
10:20And we see the type of invitation we provide for consumers to join your study.
10:26So, it's very exciting, a few exciting years ahead,
10:28because the results will come in progressively.
10:31So, watch this.
10:32Now, our second announcement is a project that is designed
10:36to help 2 billion people around the world who suffer from skin issues,
10:40and that adds up to around a quarter of the world's population,
10:44including a few of you sitting in the room today, I hope not,
10:46but that do not have access to a dermatologist.
10:49And it's the perfect intersection between health and beauty.
10:52How do we work together to solve people's skin issue around the world?
10:56So, as a doctor, I am acutely aware of the fact
11:01that there is an incredible relationship between skin conditions and quality of life.
11:06And in fact, many people around the world don't have access to solutions
11:11to help them manage their skin conditions.
11:14So, we are working on, through this partnership,
11:18the development of a new platform,
11:21a platform that leverages artificial intelligence capabilities
11:24originally developed in Google Research,
11:27and now brought to life, or getting brought to life,
11:30in the context of this platform
11:31to help people understand their skin conditions
11:34and track them across time from the convenience of their own home.
11:38Yeah, we've seen with our dermatological beauty division,
11:41recently renamed,
11:42that there's a very strong link between health and beauty,
11:45between skin health and beauty.
11:47So, how does this work in practice, this derm assist?
11:51So, imagine taking a picture,
11:53take a picture of your skin condition with your phone,
11:57and now that picture is brought to a series of algorithms,
12:01and those algorithms leverage databanks of images and prior experience
12:06to now analyze that picture,
12:10identify skin conditions, and help track across time.
12:13You can also use the platform to share information,
12:18to identify a personalized beauty routine,
12:21to ultimately now track what's happening across time,
12:26and get advice from a professional.
12:29So, it's like having a 24-7 dermatologist available on call.
12:35A professional in your pocket,
12:36and ultimately this goes back to this beauty for all concept
12:40that you talked about before.
12:41Thank you, Amy.
12:42And finally, our final project,
12:45which is something that we are both very proud of,
12:47and has been designed to bring confidence,
12:50independence, and access to beauty
12:52to 1 out of 10 adults around the world
12:55who suffer from motor issue,
12:57from hand difficulty to manipulate objects.
13:01So, that's 40 million people in the world alone.
13:03And we have created this HAPTA project,
13:08and we've done it together.
13:10Yes.
13:10I must admit, this is a project
13:13that our teams have really enjoyed working on together.
13:17So, if you can imagine,
13:19there's 50 million people in the world with mobility issues,
13:23whether that comes from a neurologic disorder
13:26that a person started off with at birth,
13:27or Parkinson's disease,
13:29or the after effects of a stroke or arthritis.
13:32And so, when you have a mobility disorder,
13:34it can be hard to eat,
13:36but can be hard to do other parts of life at the same time.
13:41Yeah, so that's why we are happy to allow BOOS
13:44to showcase and introduce HAPTA,
13:45which you see on the screen,
13:46which is the first from Lancôme,
13:49the first computerized makeup applicator
13:51for those with motor issue.
13:53And I can tell you the reaction we've had all around the world,
13:55including an award at the CES,
13:57was just phenomenal.
13:58Yeah, so HAPTA was derived from a product
14:02that we originally developed barely over 10 years ago
14:05to help people with mobility disorders eat a stabilizing spoon,
14:11and then that led to HAPTA.
14:12How do you move from a spoon to a makeup applicator?
14:14So it's interesting to think about.
14:16We heard from the same individuals who needed the spoon
14:20the importance of painting and cosmetics
14:23and the real aspects of life.
14:25And so we have leveraged the many sensors
14:29and stabilizing technologies,
14:31including artificial intelligence empowerment,
14:33to now build a stabilizing makeup applicator
14:37complete with a number of different attachments
14:41that allow a person to put on their makeup.
14:44That's fantastic.
14:45Thank you, Amy.
14:46Thank you.
14:46And I hope that we've allowed you to discover
14:49both the power of open innovation,
14:53the power of partnerships,
14:54to create beauty that moves the world,
14:57and to create truly tech for humans and by humans.
15:00Thank you very much.
15:01Have a good day.
15:02Thank you.
15:02Thank you.
15:02Thank you.
15:03Thank you.
15:04Thank you.
15:04Thank you.
15:04Thank you.
15:04Thank you.
15:05Thank you.
15:05Thank you.
15:05Thank you.
15:06Thank you.
15:06Thank you.
