00:00Hi, I'm Corinne Corbett, Essence Beauty Director, and this is Beauty All Access.
00:08So ladies, it's 2012, and we want to start our beauty routines off right.
00:13Part of that is cleaning out your makeup bag.
00:15So today we're going to look at what to keep, what to toss, and how long it lasts.
00:20So let's start with foundation.
00:22Your foundation lasts anywhere from 18 months to 2 years.
00:25But if you don't use it every day and it changes color, it separates, it looks or smells funny, toss it.
00:37Your cream to powder foundations usually start out creamy.
00:42Now if you feel that they're drying out, time for it to go.
00:45It also lasts about 18 months.
00:50Let's talk about powder compacts.
00:51So if yours cracks, if it starts to smell, if it looks a little funny in color, time to let it go.
00:59So let's talk about concealer.
01:01This is mine.
01:02I know it looks a little messy, but that's because I use it all the time.
01:06Anyway, with your concealer, it's supposed to glide on smoothly so that you can cover those imperfections.
01:12If it starts to dry out, if you can't cover those imperfections, if it changes color, it's ready to go bye-bye.
01:20Okay, powder products, eyeshadow, blush, those last up to two years.
01:25Again, if it's cracked, if it's in little pieces and you're trying to put on eyeshadow or put on your blush, it's time to go.
01:31If it looks a different color than the color you purchased, it's time for you to toss it.
01:35Let's talk a little bit about creams and gels.
01:37Another product that's supposed to glide on.
01:40If it's not gliding on, if it's feeling a little inconsistent, if it's a gel and it's separating and when you shake it, it's not coming together, time for it to go.
01:50So let's talk about lipstick.
01:52It has a shelf life of about 18 months.
01:55But let's face it, we don't all wear lipstick every day.
01:57So we find the color we love, we put it on a makeup case, we pull it out for those special occasions.
02:04But if you pull out a lipstick and it starts to smell funny or it tastes funny when you put it on, toss it immediately.
02:13Let's talk about the nubs.
02:15You know those last little bits of lipstick, eyeshadow, lip gloss?
02:20Case in point, my lip gloss is almost gone.
02:26Love Gold Digger from NARS, but it's time to retire it.
02:30Toss it.
02:32Similarly, this lipstick from MAC got a lot of wear out of me as well.
02:36But its days are numbered.
02:38Of course, I can scoop out that last little bit and put it in a jar and use it.
02:43But carrying it around for another year?
02:45Not going to happen.
02:46Time to toss it.
02:47Finally, let's talk about liquid eyeliner and mascara.
02:52Because these products are applied close to the eye, you have to be really careful about how long you keep them around.
02:58For a liquid eyeliner to dry out, that's a telltale sign that it's time for it to go.
03:03You don't want to keep it past six months anyway because it's something that can go bad.
03:08And mascara, most of us use that.
03:10If that is the one makeup product anybody uses, it's mascara.
03:13So you're using it every day, it is really, really important not to hold on to it too long.
03:20So when it comes to mascara, it needs to be tossed three to six months after you open it.
03:26So ladies, when it comes to your makeup, you want to keep it healthy and you want to keep it clean and you want to keep it beautiful.
03:33So don't be afraid to toss it and start anew.
03:35I'm Corinne Corbett, your beauty director.
03:39I'll see you next time.
