01:57which is quite unusual.
01:59People know you also because you have created a company called Snap.
02:11and the first thing that I would like to ask you is that you tell us
02:17because you have been so much at the forefront of the tech, of the innovation.
02:24What are the trends that you are seeing in the future innovations?
02:30What are the things that are speaking loud to you?
02:36Well, thank you so much, Maurice, for having me.
02:38I think the big trend, if we look over the last 10, 20, 30 years,
02:41is that computing is becoming more personal.
02:44So before to access a computer, you had to go to a separate building
02:47to access a mainframe.
02:49Eventually, that computer came to your desktop,
02:51then in your lap, now in your pocket.
02:54But in the future, we believe computing is going to be overlaid on the world
02:57in front of you through augmented reality with things like glasses.
03:01And this idea that computing is becoming more and more personal
03:04more and more integrated in your daily life,
03:07I think has followed the trends in hardware.
03:10So when we went from, you know, we started on desktop,
03:13and that was really about the information revolution,
03:15access to information, and I think it is still today with the Internet.
03:19Then we had mobile, which was the communication revolution,
03:23which was a big step that was powered by the smartphone.
03:26And now with this step from the smartphone to glasses,
03:28we're really talking about a revolution in experience.
03:31because when computing is three-dimensional
03:33and in the world around you, integrated with your day-to-day life,
03:37I think it can really, you know, help you learn things much faster,
03:41of course, help you, you know, try on a new pair of clothes
03:44without ever having to change your clothes,
03:46which is a huge step forward for things like retail.
03:48And so augmented reality and this idea of the computing experience
03:52becoming more and more personal
03:53is the big long-term trend in technology.
03:58We have sometimes a hard time to understand exactly what Snap is all about.
04:05Can you tell us what is Snap's mission,
04:09and how would you define what you are doing?
04:14Yeah, so I think one of the reasons people often struggle to understand Snapchat
04:18is that it has become so many different things to different people
04:21because our product has expanded so rapidly.
04:24But Snapchat at its core is a camera.
04:27We have always opened the application into the camera
04:29and, you know, use the camera to help people communicate with one another visually.
04:34Because what we realized was that for the last 150 years,
04:37the camera was only being used to save important memories.
04:40So people used it at a birthday party or during a holiday.
04:44But we realized that the camera could be used for so much more.
04:47So Snap at its core, it's a camera company
04:50because we're transforming the role that the camera plays in people's lives,
04:54starting with communication, of course.
04:56Now more people are using their camera to communicate
04:58rather than to save memories, to tell stories, of course,
05:01when we put content in chronological order,
05:04to show where they are and what they're doing on our map,
05:06to express themselves through content.
05:08And, of course, most importantly, they're using our camera every day.
05:12250 million people are engaging with augmented reality every day
05:16just inside of Snapchat.
05:17So the camera has gone from a way of saving memories
05:20to a way of talking
05:22and now of a way of experiencing the world through augmented reality.
05:28So this means that you are doing the cameras?
05:32We make cameras.
05:34Yeah, that's what we do.
05:36And you are involved in hardware, if I understand well.
05:41Yes, exactly.
05:42Because when we first started using our camera for augmented reality,
05:45we saw how much fun people were having on this tiny little screen
05:48and using their thumbs,
05:49but people loved using augmented reality on the phone.
05:51And so about eight years ago, we said,
05:54gosh, what if we could help expand the way people use augmented reality,
05:57overlay it on the world in front of you,
05:59make it much more immersive,
06:01not constrain it to this tiny screen,
06:04but really expand the way people interact with AR with their hands,
06:07allow them to walk around and see the world around them,
06:10you know, and see computing overlaid on that.
06:12And the way that we decided to do that was by building hardware
06:15because we just were bumping up against the constraints of the phone too often
06:19when it came to augmented reality.
06:21And we believe glasses could contribute to a much more immersive experience.
06:25And what are the differences?
06:26Why, with all those very large corporations which are doing cameras,
06:32what are the specificities of yours?
06:36Well, I think the main specific of our camera
06:39is that it's a camera designed for talking and not for making memories.
06:43And so very often a traditional camera company will be focused on
06:46being able to save the highest quality image, the most perfect image.
06:50So you'd go for the low quality?
06:53Well, we go for speed and that's what's most important for us
06:55because in a conversation being able to send an image
06:58or a video back and forth very quickly matters a lot.
07:01So you go for speed?
07:02We go for speed and we go for expressiveness.
07:04So being able to use augmented reality or creative tools
07:07to overlay your own point of view, your own perspective on an image
07:10and share it with a friend.
07:11And this is a new camera.
07:16This is a flying camera, yeah.

07:21How it works.
07:23Well, this camera is designed to give you the perspective
07:26that a drone can give you by pulling back
07:28and revealing the world around you
07:30or following you through space on an adventure
07:33without all of the fear of using a drone
07:36because what we found was that people, I think in Paris actually,
07:39you're required to get a license to operate a drone.
07:42They're very difficult to use.
07:43They can be dangerous.
07:44So we wanted a camera that could take off
07:46and land in the palm of your hand
07:48and follow you around to create amazing videos.

09:49versus replacing it.

11:02seeing the profound ways

11:05I mentioned retail,

11:07the retail experience
11:08is something
11:09that's very difficult
11:11today.
11:11Online,
11:12everything looks the same.
11:12you're looking at
11:13little pictures
11:14of clothing.
11:15It's very hard
11:15to know how something
11:16actually looks on you.
11:18And so,
11:18what's very exciting
11:19about augmented reality
11:20is that you can
11:20actually try it on
11:21yourself and what
11:22we see is that
11:23that increases
11:24conversion rates
11:25for retailers
11:26and so it benefits...

11:31with L'Oreal,
11:32with LVMH,
11:33there is plenty
11:34of augmented reality.

11:36so that's a huge
11:37investment area
11:37for brands and retailers
11:39because they see
11:39the results
11:40and the community,

11:41loves to shop this way.
11:42So I think
11:43that's a very good example.
11:44I think education
11:45is another example
11:46where today augmented reality
11:47is making a big difference.
11:48Whether it's on the phone
11:49or through glasses
11:50to be able to walk
11:51through the solar system
11:52and see the way planets
11:53relate to one another,
11:54it's very different
11:55than watching a simple video.

11:58sitting in front

13:12of people creating
13:13and using augmented reality.

13:17of developers
13:18building AR lenses
13:19for Snapchat.
13:20There are millions
13:21of those lenses
13:21that have already been created.
13:23And of course,
13:23AR glasses are things
13:25that are already available
13:26to developers
13:27that they're using today
13:28to build things.
13:28So I think the scale
13:29of AR is already
13:30so much bigger
13:31than virtual reality,
13:33for example.
13:33And that's why people
13:34are so excited about it
13:35because it's not
13:36an imagined future.
13:38It's what's happening today.

13:41to see that we can travel
13:45by staying where we are.

14:46So we now reach
14:47more than 25 million
14:48monthly active users in France.
14:50I believe we're the number one app
14:52according to MediaMetri
14:53for 15 to 49 year olds.
14:56So Snap in France,
14:57I think,
14:57has been very well received
14:59by our community
15:00and we're, of course,
15:01investing a lot
15:01in things like augmented reality
15:03because in France,
15:04the combination
15:05of the creativity
15:06and the science
15:08means that it's a perfect fit
15:09to really invest
15:10in the future
15:11of augmented reality.

15:13our first AR studio in France,
15:15which is something
15:16that we are using
15:17to partner together
15:18mostly with non-profits,
15:19places like museums,

15:21to enhance their experience

15:26how to build AR experiences.

17:58the size of computers itself.

18:01now that semiconductors
18:02are so small,
18:04it's really the projector system
18:06and the waveguide
18:07that's driving the size
18:08of AR glasses.
18:09And so innovation there
18:10is going to be critical
18:11and you can expect us
18:13to continue to deliver there.
18:14And then alongside that,
18:16we're going to continue
18:16to evolve our AR platform.
18:18So we've announced
18:19some very meaningful improvements
18:20at our last partner summit
18:21that make it a lot easier
18:23for developers
18:23to build AR experiences
18:24that are much more advanced
18:26and connect them
18:27to our AR cloud services,
18:29which give you storage
18:30and multi-user solutions
18:31so that people can use
18:32the same AR experience
18:34together at the same time.
18:35Of course, solutions
18:36to help you geolocate
18:37AR experiences very specifically.
18:40And so that cloud,
18:41that set of cloud AR services
18:43will also continue to evolve.
18:45So expect, you know,
18:46big evolutions
18:46on the hardware side
18:47and of course on the platform
18:48as well.

19:36we've invented lots of new ways
19:38to help advertisers

19:40our conversion API
19:41so that we can continue
