00:00Bonjour. Bonjour. Bonjour. Voilà. We are going to have a conversation with Dr. Young, who is the chairman of Huawei.
00:18I think we pronounce Huawei. And Huawei is one of the most innovative companies in the world, in all the
00:30world of digital.
00:32And I see that Dr. Young is here, so I'm going closer to him. Bonjour. Ni hao.
00:44Bonjour. Ni hao. Hi, Maurice.
00:45Hi. How are you?
00:49Good. How are you?
00:51Good. I understand that you are locked in China, and I know that it is very difficult to travel.
00:57So, sorry for not having you in person, and I look forward that next year you will be here in
01:06person.
01:07Dr. Young, we are extremely honoured to have the conversation with you.
01:13I would like that you tell us a few words about Huawei.
01:22For the people to understand exactly what's going on, you are the chairman of Huawei Board of Directors,
01:30and you are personally engaged in what Huawei is doing, and particularly the considerable investment that you are doing in
01:42Europe.
01:43This is something which is highly appreciated.
01:46And the first thing, the first question that I have for you is, can you share a little bit your
01:57vision about the digital era,
02:00and how Huawei is working on that digital era, and what you are bringing to the consumers and to the
02:09corporations?
02:12Okay. Thank you, Maurice.
02:15Ladies and gentlemen, and good morning.
02:19Creating an open ecosystem is critical to the digital economy.
02:25So, I'm excited to hear from today's panelist.
02:31To start with, I'd like to share some thoughts on the digital future.
02:39The digital technology like AI, cloud computing, and 5G are converging rapidly,
02:47changing how we live, work, and engage.
02:51They are the dressing force behind the digital economy, which is in the development strategy over 50 of when the
03:02global GDP were digitalized in the 2022.
03:08So, we believe like the open collaboration is the way forward.
03:14This is especially true in the tech sector.
03:19By working together, we can promote unified standards, make them the digital economy more inclusive.
03:30Let me give you an example.
03:35And just another way, Huawei announced our top 10 innovations for 2021.
03:44This includes many innovative and technology areas, like autonomous and driving, five networks, five optics.
03:57One of them was new algorithm that resolves the major challenges in the autonomous driving.
04:06This includes the positioning, perception, decision-making, challenging, complex urban road scenarios.
04:18This new invention shortens car pass through time by 40%.
04:26Means that car can navigate in the very contact situation more quickly and the safety.
04:32So, hopefully, hopefully, no more traffic jams in future.
04:38As for computation, it reduces the storage overhead by 200 times and cuts the computing power usage by over 80%.
04:50It's a better experience for future if the user is in the less energy, so it's much better for environment.
04:59As we enter a new digital era, these are types of innovations we hope to share with the world.
05:09These will have a broad innovation landscape, drive our industry forward, and advanced technology for everyone.
05:18Next, I would also like to talk about how digital technology and open ecosystem would help SME go digital.
05:32For SMEs, small and medium size and enterprise, the digital economy is both a challenge and a big opportunity.
05:42According to the European Commission, they allow about 25 million SMEs in the euro.
05:52They provide jobs for about 100 million people and account for more than half of the European GDP.
06:03But only 70% of these SMEs have integrated digital technology into the business, compared to the 54% of
06:17large companies who have already done so.
06:19To have SMEs, I think it's necessary to promote fast adoption of the digital technology, like AI, cloud computing, 5G,
06:36and IoT.
06:37This is crucial for making the post-pandemic world more resilient and prosperous.
06:45So we have two recommendations for this.
06:49First, shared technical platforms are needed to help SMEs to innovate fast.
06:59Digital technology can help SME fund new opportunities, bring their products and services to more people.
07:08For example, real-time data analytics can help SMEs to make better decisions in product development, marketing, and the supply
07:21chain for faster time to market.
07:24In the coming future, AI computing power will be everywhere, and I have noted that a drone operation model will
07:40make this happen soon.
07:42But, many SMEs don't have a resource that they go to the digital.
07:51Government, industry organizations, and the firms can work together to create shared platforms for technical innovation.
08:03This platform can make technologies, tools, and digital capabilities as easily available as water and electricity, and lower the thresholds
08:20for SMEs.
08:21A good example is shared AI computing power centers, which will give SMEs easier access to advance the computing power
08:36so that they can experiment at lower costs at the beginning.
08:43Second, an open industry ecosystem is important for SMEs to improve the digital scale.
08:55This will allow industries and companies and the industrial organizations to work more closely together and help SMEs better integrate
09:08digital technology into the core business.
09:13In 2014, Huawei and our French partners launched an annual digital impulse contest for the French startups, which takes place
09:27in the cities like Long and Liz.
09:30Winners have the opportunity to visit the world's important markets and engage with the local partners and customers.
09:38The contest has helped to transfer practical ICT capability to the French SMEs.
09:51Benefating 80 companies so far, some of these companies are now Huawei's supplier and partner.
10:02Let me give you an example.
10:05Let me give you an example.
10:06Huawei helps HISTORI, a VR solution provider, use cloud computing and 3G technology to recreate the beauty of history.
10:19HISTORI has deployed augmented reality tool guide systems to have important landmarks like Chateau de Chabon,
10:31share the rich history with the world.
10:35Huawei hopes to share our innovations in the capability with more customers, partners and SMEs to have them go digital,
10:47grow better.
10:48The digital world is here.
10:51The digital world is here and is growing and they are already surrounding foundations for open collaboration in place.
11:00Huawei has been working in and with Europe for over 20 years.
11:07We will continue investing, innovating and providing practical solutions to support Europe go digital.
11:18Together, we can drive the digital economy forward and making it more inclusive police for all. Thank you.
11:29Thank you.
11:30Thank you.
11:31Thank you, Howard.
11:31It is clear that the SMEs are at a disadvantage when it comes to AI and when it comes to
11:42the computing power.
11:43And the fact that you are putting this platform for sharing AI and computing power is something which will help
11:55greatly the SMEs in Europe.
11:58And I'm sure that this is something which is of critical importance.
12:02I will continue the conversation, so thank you very much.
12:06I will continue the conversation with Jacques Biau and with Franck Le Bouchard.
12:17Jacques is a very good friend.
12:20We know each other since many, many years.
12:24He was the president of Ecole Polytechnique and one of the most prestigious schools in the world and definitely the
12:35most prestigious in France.
12:37And Jacques is the chairman of the board of Huawei in France.
12:45So maybe the first question that I will have to put to Jacques will be about in this environment where
13:00partnership is so important and where each partner is bringing its own expertise in order to create a value chain,
13:09which is good to everyone.
13:12Can you tell us if you heard about the partnership with De Vialet because we don't have a clear understanding
13:23of what you are going to do together?
13:26So maybe you can start and then I will ask our friend to complete on what you are saying.
13:36Thank you, Maurice, and good morning to all in the room and greetings to Dr. Leung on the line.
13:46Actually, innovation has only value if it provides benefit to society.
13:51And that's why we at Huawei we promote open innovation because we feel that if you really want to carve
14:00out the value of innovation for society, you need to share many things.
14:05You need really many talents to make the innovation useful for society.
14:11You need an inventor, you need somebody who has the idea, but then you need many people to work on
14:18the regulatory aspects, on the marketing aspects, trying to find out what the public expects.
14:23And this is typically, I think, what we did and Frank will elaborate on this as regards to De Vialet.
14:30You know, we came here to Viva Tech with 40 startups younger than De Vialet, but we keep on with
14:38digital impulse to promote the collaboration of a large company such as Huawei with smaller companies to really provide them
14:47with our experience, but also to listen to their understanding of the expectations of society.
14:55So, what usually happens is that somebody comes with an idea, we may have the technologies which make things possible,
15:04and then teams are created where together people will work on what makes sense, what doesn't make sense, what is
15:14doable from a regulatory perspective, from a commercial perspective, how to make it really as economical as possible.
15:21And I think Frank will tell you how this collaboration that he has, that he has had for a couple
15:29of years with us has enabled him to penetrate the Asian markets.
15:35On our hand, on our hand, we are also extremely happy to use his technologies, I talked about sharing things,
15:43and we're extremely happy to use his technologies to put them into our product range, especially now.
15:50We know we're developing smart office devices, and these devices, they need to provide sound, and the sound in our
16:00devices is the best because it rests on De Vialet technology.
16:04Frank, you are known at De Vialet, more than you, for delivering probably the best sound in the world.
16:15Not probably.
16:16Not probably?
16:17Certainly.
16:18Certainly.
16:19So, can you please tell us a little bit, what kind of partnership do you have with Huawei, what does
16:30it bring to them, and what does it bring to you?
16:34What is the interest of that partnership?
16:37Thank you, Maurice.
16:38I guess the key word here is partnership.
16:41Let me tell you a little story.
16:43So, at De Vialet, part of our ambition is to produce electronic products in France and sell them in Asia
16:51and in China, which is a challenge.
16:54And in 2015, we decided to go to China, and we opened on our own a store in Shanghai.
17:01And it was a miserable failure.
17:05We closed the store after only six months.
17:07Welcome to the club.
17:09It was terrible.
17:10Terrible time at De Vialet.
17:11And then we thought again about China, and we thought, well, we decided that we could only go there with
17:19a or several strong partners.
17:21And what we did is that we literally called Huawei, the public phone number in Shenzhen, and we asked to
17:29speak to the R&D director of Huawei, which was, you know, when you think about it, it's completely ridiculous.
17:34But we did that several times, many times actually, and ultimately, we got in contact with people at Huawei.
17:41And I remember the first launch in Shenzhen with the R&D director at Huawei, and his question was, what
17:49are the De Vialet values?
17:50And I said, you know, we are all about technology, we are crazy about pure sound, we are all about
17:55engineers, and we think we can bring Huawei our greatest technologies.
17:59And that's how it started. It started with us needing a partnership in China, and it started with this core
18:06partnership around engineers.
18:08We're now four years into this strategic partnership.
18:11We have launched with Huawei many products, from smart speakers to all-in-one PCs, laptops, televisions.
18:20They all include the De Vialet sound, and they all include the De Vialet brand.
18:24And this, for the last four years, has been very beneficial to De Vialet for two reasons.
18:32First of all, Huawei buys our technologies, which brings revenues, which allows us to hire many engineers in Paris.
18:43And it also, probably most importantly, shows the De Vialet brand in China, and we now have a 7%
18:52brand awareness.
18:52I know this seems low, but it's huge for a company such as ours, in tier one cities in China,
18:57and that's thanks to this partnership.
19:00Merci. Since the beginning of the digital era, we have discovered that in fact partnerships are absolutely indispensable.
19:13No one can do the whole chain of everything, including Microsoft and including Apple.
19:22And despite the fact that Apple has a closed system, they need partners.
19:28So, maybe, Jacques, you can tell us, and this will be the question for you also, how works the open
19:37system of partnership, as you see it?
19:40Well, first of all, it really rests on an exchange of information.
19:47So, we do have many partnerships with fundamental research teams.
19:51Our founder, Renjen Faye, believes in science.
19:55And so, we have this collaboration with scientists who know where the frontiers of science are, and they are free
20:01to do this, and they publish their work.
20:03I insist on this. Everything which is done in collaboration with us is published if it's pure science.
20:10Now, if it's applied science, we have agreements where, in advance, we discuss on how we are going to share
20:17the IP.
20:17We patent because we should not forget that patents are a way to disseminate the information, actually.
20:24It protects the inventor, but it makes everybody aware of the technology.
20:27And then, we have those teams where we work together on how to make things happen, how to optimize it.
20:35And so, we have a number of examples of such collaborations, for instance, with a company called Ubudu,
20:41which developed very nice systems to localize people inside buildings where, you know, the GPS doesn't come,
20:48and where they had part of the idea, and we had part of the technology, our teams worked together.
20:53And I could quote a number of such examples, same in solar panels.
20:58We are not manufacturing solar cells, but we know how to make them more efficient.
21:03And again, collaboration, working together, making everything very transparent.
21:09And transparency is really a key word in our way to work with others.
21:16Thank you, Jack. Franck, from your point of view.
21:20Let me add another episode of my launches with Huawei.
21:25At some stage, they looked at me and said,
21:27what you do at De Viale in terms of technology is wonderful, and no one does that in the world.
21:32But we at Huawei have 70, 75,000 engineers.
21:37You need to run very fast, because in three years' time, we may be able to do what you do
21:42now.
21:42And since then, we at De Viale are completely obsessed with this sentence, which is, we need to keep, we
21:51are challenged by Huawei.
21:52We need to invest massively, because we know that if we do not do so, at some stage, they will
22:00have our technology or the equivalent.
22:02So we absolutely are obsessed with keeping this three-year advance on Huawei, and others, of course.
22:09Frank, you know, Le Paté à la Louette.
22:13For our friends, Le Paté à la Louette is a French paté where you take a horse and a small
22:20alouette.
22:22And it looks like, with your partnership with Huawei, you have a big, big, big horse and a very, very
22:30small bird, which is De Viale.
22:35So, how do you keep the balance right when it comes to such discrepancy of power?
22:44Two reasons to your question. First is, people at Huawei do respect technology.
22:51Half of Huawei employees are engineers. They have a very strong respect for technologies and engineers.
22:59The second thing, which very much puts us at equal level in some stages, is our brand.
23:07We have a French luxury brand, which is now sold in the 70 countries in the world.
23:13And Huawei very much appreciates having a partnership with a French luxury brand.
23:19That also is a key asset in our relationship.
23:22We are coming to an end.
23:24Jacques, maybe you can say the mot de la fin, the conclusion?
23:32Yes, thank you, Maurice. Well, thank you, Frank, also, for the exchange.
23:37I think a couple of key words. And the key words are really openness, I mean, transparency, respect.
23:45I mean, for us, there is no small client. That's what you see, for instance, in our power management business.
23:52We serve people in the houses and we serve huge, huge fields of solar panels.
23:59And it's the same in every business. No small client, respect and transparency.
24:04Fantastic. A rose of applause for our friends, Jacques and Frank.
24:10And have a good day. I'll see you later in a session that I will be back in about half
24:17an hour,
24:17which will be with CZ and Vitalik Buterin. Thank you.
24:23Thank you.
