00:00the trey hendrickson situation sucks it sucks that we're here it sucks that the bengals
00:05and trey hendrickson haven't been able to work out a long-term deal it sucks that the bengals
00:09are still looking for help on defense and trey well his departure is inevitable ladies and
00:14gentlemen it is the bengals have negotiated with him for a few years it hasn't gotten done
00:21i think both sides deserve blame i think ultimately the bengals got leery of paying
00:27trey the guaranteed money he wanted he wanted guaranteed money because he sold jamar and t
00:30all of those things back and forth all everywhere we go well it gets to this point the bridge
00:37doesn't seem to be mendable that doesn't mean that they should just let trey hendrickson walk in free
00:42agency and we have nfl networks cameron wolf reporting over the weekend that there are multiple
00:48teams interested in trey that the colts could be open to signing them in free agency or a possible
00:56trade if the bengals tagged him there's rummling should they tag him will they tag him well here's
01:01the thing they should tag trey hendrickson trey hendrickson is arguably the top free agent on the
01:05the market and so even if that bridge is burned even if there's no plans to keep trey hendrickson
01:11you tag him and the franchise tag window the reason i'm doing this video today is because the franchise
01:19window that tag window opens tuesday and it lasts from tuesday february 17th
01:25to march 3rd and you have that window that two-week window to use the franchise tag and the nfl
01:32combine
01:33is baked in there and so you don't necessarily have to officially announce it or do anything like that
01:38but that's the window and so what i would do if i'm the bengals is i would start that dialogue
01:43now hey
01:44trey we're going to trade you place the tag on you we're going to trade you let's find out what
01:52teams are interested in giving you a long-term deal we'll work out some trade compensation and
01:57then we'll give you permission to negotiate that deal with the team bang bang boom once you guys get
02:03close to a deal from a negotiating standpoint that's it that's done and i think there are going
02:10to be people like oh that's complicated because you're banking on the other team to be able to
02:14reach a deal with trey guess what they're gonna have to do in free agency they're gonna have to
02:19reach a deal with trey and and so that that's the thing that i think a lot of people miss
02:23here
02:24there is an advantage to the bengals doing this for the nfl and it's that teams don't have to compete
02:31with everybody else and negotiate with everybody else when it comes to the contract they can give up an
02:36asset give up a third round pick like the colts have pick 80 if you can get pick 80 from
02:42the colts
02:42if you could get pick 89 in the 2026 nfl draft from the bears if you could get a pick
02:48in the early 100s
02:50i would be interested in any of those and you do that the very very simple idea let me get
02:58an asset
02:59for trey hendrickson that i otherwise wouldn't get if he left in free agency there are going to be some
03:06that say okay well you could get a compensatory selection next off season if he leaves well the
03:11bengals should be in the odafe oa market or boy mafe market or insert whatever pass rush or joey bosa
03:19market where they're signing big time free agents john franklin myers the list goes on and on and on
03:27right they're signing big time free agents on defense brian cook i hope that offset the loss in
03:36the compensatory process so like it'd be like free agents in free agents out and that's how
03:40compensatory picks are based well if trey leaves and a couple other free agents leave and then you
03:44sign four free agents well then they just swap out and they cancel each other out in the compensatory
03:48pick process i don't want the bengals thinking about comp picks and free agency i want them thinking
03:53about how they get better this year and so if you tag trey it is a 36.7 million dollar
04:00cap hit
04:00this year you use the void you're on him he would be set to make 30.2 million dollars in
04:05cash which
04:06is a bargain for whoever is acquiring him so 30.2 million and there can be a lot of people
04:11that say
04:11oh he's only worth 20. i talked to someone the other day that expects him to make in the 90
04:15-ish
04:15million dollar range if he gets to free agency three-year contract that third year is probably fake
04:21doesn't matter still three-year contract 90-ish million maybe it's 85 maybe it's 95 maybe it's 105
04:27it'll be in that range trey hendrickson's going to get paid it's not a deep free agent class
04:34he was a year removed from leading the nfl in sacks has 39 sacks in his last 41 games even
04:39with
04:40everything that happened this past year four sacks in seven games 39 sacks 41 games that's what happens
04:47that's what happens so that's what i would do if i'm the bangles and what you do is you go
04:53to the
04:53combine you negotiate you have deals in place you get a deal in place maybe you have multiple
04:59maybe it is maybe it is multiple still and you have all right trey do you want to go here
05:04do you
05:04want to go here but you can control his own destiny that's the other element here that's the other thing
05:10that is crucial you don't want him suiting up for the baltimore ravens and trying to sack joe burrow with
05:16the afc north on the line you don't want him going to a team that you're going to compete with
05:22directly to get to the super bowl and that's it it's asset management here it's taking a few more
05:29steps to get another pick much earlier than you would even in a best case scenario from a trey
05:36hendrickson compensation standpoint so in an ideal world would the bangles keep trey hendrickson probably
05:42but i don't think that that's really on the table at this point and so if that's the case
05:48then say all right we're going to take this asset and we're going to let the league know
05:52he's available and we're going to say hey we're going to get a deal done by x date and i
05:59get it
05:59there are a lot of worry errs there are people that worry about a bunch of different factors here
06:06one of the factors well what if he signs the tag well he's not going to sign the tag because
06:11the
06:11bangles if you do this you communicate with him hey we're going to find you a team that's willing to
06:14pay you long term there's no reason uh for you to uh do so his agent and representatives will give
06:21them the same thing hey we're about to go somewhere else it's about to work out everything's about to
06:26happen uh that you've wanted to happen for the past couple of years long-term money multi-year deal
