00:01Across Yorkshire's Moors and Dales, the world's most famous vet set the benchmark for animal care.
00:08And James Herriot's legacy lives on.
00:13His former trainee, Peter Wright...
00:16All my life, I've enjoyed doing this.
00:18...has been a Yorkshire vet for over 40 years.
00:22There we are. How are you doing, my old mate?
00:25Peter's old partner, Julian Norton...
00:27I didn't have colour in his day.
00:29It did have some colour.
00:31...now has two practices.
00:33I don't want to let him go.
00:35One of them in the town where Herriot worked, surrounded by the North Yorkshire landscape he loved.
00:41Everything that you can see all across there is Yorkshire.
00:44And in the foothills of the Pennines...
00:47That's a Hollywood smile.
00:48...a new generation of town and country vets also uphold the Herriot ethos.
00:54I'm just going to have a feel a bit deeper inside to see what we've got.
00:57...the teams are united.
00:58We can probably knock this off ourselves, do you think?
01:01Never taking their eyes off the ball...
01:06...has there help animals of all shapes...
01:09It's trying to grow an extra pair of legs.
01:11...sizes...
01:12Hello, gorgeous.
01:13...types...
01:16...and temperaments.
01:17No, don't be nasty.
01:19...it's definitely not glamorous.
01:21Cut that mucus out.
01:22...but it's varied.
01:23So we've actually found gold, literally found gold.
01:26...it's rarely easy.
01:27You've won Mr. Wet t-shirt.
01:29...but they continue the Herriot tradition.
01:32It's alive.
01:33...treating all creatures...
01:34...just move it.
01:35I can't believe it.
01:37...great...
01:37...not quite the same as operated in theatre, is it?
01:40Come on!
01:40...and small.
01:41Yeah!
01:42Oh-ho-ho-ho-ho!
01:53On the good ship Yorkshire...
01:55...the animals often come in more than two by two.
02:00Whether it's a flock of sheep...
02:03...a herd of cows...
02:07...or a murder of crows...
02:10...a pack of dogs...
02:13...or, as even the most dedicated feline fans might not know...
02:18...a clouder of cats.
02:23But more doesn't always mean merrier.
02:34In fact, as Matt is aware en route to an emergency at a farm near Huddersfield...
02:40...it can cause complications.
02:44I've just had a call from Edward.
02:46He's having trouble with the calving.
02:48He says he can feel four legs but only one head.
02:51So, anything could be happening.
02:53Naturally, you think that all calves should have four legs and one head.
02:57But when they're being born, all you should feel is two legs and one head...
03:00...because they come out in like a superman position.
03:03But if you're feeling four legs and one head all at the entrance to the birth canal...
03:08...then there's something going on there.
03:10Now, whether there is a problem with the calf and it's deformed, which unfortunately can happen...
03:15...whether we've got twins or whether we've got a calf that's just very flexible...
03:19...I just don't know.
03:21Very much a case of getting there as quick as I can, assessing the situation.
03:26Really, these things can either go really well or they can end in disaster.
03:32She started about two hours ago, had a few of that and now or since...
03:36...so I'm leaning into you to sort them out.
03:38See what we can do.
03:40Is she quiet enough?
03:41Yeah.
03:42Right then, let's have a feel, let's see what's going on.
03:45Good girl, you can stay there.
03:48Oh, yeah, see what you mean there?
03:50There's a few legs.
03:53So I think we might be a twin, Edward.
03:55I think I can just feel two calves coming through there.
03:58I think they're both trying to come at the same time.
04:00That's never going to happen.
04:03So what I'm going to do is I'm just going to try and push the further one back out of
04:06the way...
04:06...get the first one out and then hopefully get that second out.
04:11She's been all right myself, has she?
04:12Yeah, yeah.
04:13What's surprised me, she's gone over a duel day to her twins, they'd only come early.
04:19So I've been hanging on and hanging on.
04:22Right, I've got the second calf pushed back, so I'll just go grab my ropes.
04:36I'm just going to see if I can get this first one out, all right?
04:39Come on.
04:40There we go.
04:42Oh, she's coming.
04:43She is coming.
04:46Good girl.
04:47Give us another push.
04:48I'm going to wheel me out.
04:49That's it.
04:50Come on, lass.
04:51Good girl.
04:53It's alive.
04:59There we go.
05:01Well done.
05:02Well done.
05:03It is a big one, isn't it, that?
05:07Come on.
05:08Give us a sneeze.
05:09Come on.
05:10Give us a sneeze and a cough.
05:14Ooh, a shock entry to the world, eh?
05:16There we go.
05:18Lovely.
05:19We've got a bull.
05:21Right.
05:22First one's come out quite nicely.
05:24It's now a case of seeing if I can reach the second, and hopefully the second one will
05:28come out just as nicely, and there's nothing wrong with it either.
05:36The veterinary world comes with its fair share of interesting sights and smells.
05:43And at the practice in Kirby Moorside, Vicky's hoping Peter can get to the bottom of her pet
05:50rabbit Tango's unpleasant problem.
05:54She's not feeling very well.
05:55I think she's got something wrong with her bum, and she's not looking very happy.
06:01She doesn't seem to be moving about very well.
06:03She's a bit stinky.
06:04She's got muck all around her bum, so there's definitely something going on there.
06:08Vicky.
06:09Hello.
06:09We've let you come through.
06:10Yep.
06:11How are you?
06:11Yes, good, thank you.
06:14What's the problem?
06:15I don't know.
06:15I think she's got maybe a bit of an infection around her bum.
06:18Oh.
06:18She's got some big clumps of muck at the back there.
06:22We tried to wash her the other day.
06:24Yeah.
06:25Oh, crikey.
06:27This is not very nice.
06:30You can see we've got maggots there.
06:33Often this originates from a urinary tract infection.
06:38Look in the box there.
06:39Has she passed some?
06:40Oh, she has some wet stuff there.
06:42Yeah.
06:43There was definitely no maggots about her or anything when we walked in.
06:46There was none of that red patch either.
06:48That can happen so quickly.
06:49She might have a little bit of skull there associated with urine.
06:53Yeah.
06:54Or sometimes if they're sitting there in urine or faeces, then obviously that can aggravate
06:59it and cause sores there.
07:01Yeah.
07:01And allow the maggots to get a hold.
07:03Yeah.
07:04That's the most likely thing anyway.
07:06Yeah.
07:07I mean, sometimes we do get tumours in the uterus, in which case we can't do much about
07:12that.
07:13And sometimes we do get incontinence for reasons that aren't always fully apparent.
07:19I'm going to have to sedate her to get this cleaned up and sort of crack on.
07:23Get her sorted.
07:24All right.
07:25Okay.
07:25See you in a little bit.
07:26Thank you, Nicky.
07:31There we are, Tango.
07:33As Peter and Nurse KP get to work, they soon realise the full extent of Tango's infestation.
07:45Oh, hell.
07:47Hey, look, look at this.
07:49There's a maggot on the loose.
07:51Oh, it's on the shoe.
07:51Don't mean to alarm anyone.
07:53This is unbelievable.
07:55This just shows how quickly that maggots can become an issue.
07:59Go away.
08:01This is pretty bad.
08:03If we don't do something like this, this rabbit has a certain death because the maggots
08:08just continue to burrow into the flesh, burrow into the abdomen.
08:16I think I'd like to keep her in this evening so we can keep an eye on her.
08:20So I'm going to have a word with Vicky and tell her what my plan is.
08:25Vicky.
08:25Hello.
08:27When we've started to take all the fur back, you can see how extensive it is.
08:34There's a big area affected, so what I'd like to do, I'd like to keep her in if that's all
08:38right.
08:38Okay.
08:38I want to keep an eye on her.
08:40What are her actual chances, Peter?
08:42Will she survive from this?
08:44I'm hoping so.
08:45Right.
08:45I'm hoping she doesn't go into shock because not only has she got the trauma of the maggots
08:51or whatever, that's been beaving away for the last few hours, but, you know, with the anaesthetic
08:56on top as well and what I've had to do to her, to clean her up.
09:00So it's a big ordeal for her.
09:01Right.
09:02It's going to be touch and go.
09:04I know Peter will do his best.
09:06He always has done for her, so just fingers crossed that she pulls through it.
09:13Coming up.
09:14The second one's got to stay back.
09:16For Matt, it's his difficult second calf.
09:19Come on, come on.
09:20You're the right spotting.
09:21There you go.
09:22Spot the donkeys a star.
09:24That's a Hollywood smile right there, isn't it?
09:26But the close-up of his teeth concerns Shona.
09:30Right.
09:30They're pretty bad, aren't they?
09:32And in theatre with a struggling bulldog, deep breaths for Julian and Lucy.
09:37Poor girl.
09:38Her illness thought she'd died.
09:39She went blue and stopped breathing.
09:41Well, we definitely need to do this surgery then.
09:54Near Huddersfield, Matt's been called to an emergency at a dairy farm.
10:00I know.
10:00I know.
10:01We're coming.
10:01We're coming.
10:02He's already managed to deliver one of the overdue twins.
10:06I know it would be okay if he just had one, but you've got a second coming.
10:10Now, Edward's hoping he can save the other calf, too.
10:13The second one's got to stay back.
10:15Go on, lass.
10:16Come on.
10:17You're in the right spotting.
10:18I'm here to go.
10:20Have you got a jack, Edward?
10:21I have.
10:22I mean, we might not need it, Paul.
10:24I don't see.
10:25It's all that's a hammer.
10:28Oh, boy.
10:32All right.
10:32Two legs.
10:33Two loops.
10:39So I've managed to sort the legs out.
10:41Get the right legs to the right calf.
10:43And this second one is going to come out any time.
10:46Come on.
10:48Come on.
10:50That's it.
10:51Good girl.
10:52Just a funny angle, but we can work with it.
10:55There we go.
10:57Give it a minute there.
10:59Get the fluid out.
10:59There we go.
11:02There we go.
11:04Well done, calf.
11:05Come on.
11:06Give us a sneeze.
11:07So we want to make sure that airways are clear.
11:10Make sure that the car's breathing.
11:12And then we can leave mum to it.
11:15Right.
11:16I'm happy.
11:18Right.
11:18I know. Mum's here now.
11:20Right.
11:20Leave them both to it.
11:23Tell you what.
11:23For twins.
11:24I think those are the biggest twins I've seen for a while, you know.
11:27Well, that was a good result.
11:28I do like these visits.
11:31It's always unnerving when you get a call through that says there's lots of feet and one head.
11:35They were both that keen to get out.
11:36I think just this one here was causing the problem because it just had one leg back and one leg
11:42forward.
11:43And it was just trying to push out first.
11:45Clearly wanted to be the eldest.
11:47By 30 seconds or so.
11:49She's a good mum anyway.
11:50She's going to look after them anyway.
11:52She is.
11:53Straight to it.
11:55Absolutely chuffed with that result.
11:57We've got a good mum.
11:58We've got two live calves.
12:00Chuffed.
12:03The last thing I expected were twins off this cow.
12:07What farming's all about.
12:09Full of surprises.
12:10And they're big twins as well, aren't they?
12:12They are.
12:12Mum's taken to them really well, so jump done.
12:16Those twins should be absolutely fine going forward.
12:19Often twins are quite small, but to have two twins of that size and look as healthy as that is
12:24really good going and very proud of mum.
12:34Over in North Yorkshire, at the practice in Kirby Moorside.
12:39Oh my God.
12:40Peter and Nurse KP are dealing with Tango the rabbit's life-threatening maggot infestation.
12:47It's a long, slow process, this.
12:50Plus the skin's quite delicate as well.
12:53The maggots, fortunately, they've not penetrated too deeply into the tissues,
12:58which lends weight to the fact that they haven't been there long.
13:01It's just the numbers of them which was an issue,
13:04and certainly another 24 hours, then we would have been in serious trouble.
13:10We're going to get some very dilute antiseptic now to wash the area in.
13:17Ready?
13:19Right, let's get her in there.
13:22Can she breathe okay at that?
13:24Yeah, she's absolutely fine.
13:25Good.
13:31Oh, I'm sorry, I know there's some sore bits there.
13:34Yeah, there's a chunk of skin missing there.
13:37I think that's alright, don't you?
13:39Shall I take this out?
13:44Hey, lovely.
13:47Right.
13:48We're looking a little better now.
13:50What we've got to do now is put a barrier antiseptic cream on there
13:54to prevent dehydration, the skin drying out,
13:57and also an antiseptic to prevent superficial infection.
14:06That's all this side to do, and then you're done.
14:09It's like a fall there, isn't it?
14:11There is.
14:12Yeah.
14:13Right.
14:15It's not too well a job, lad, is it?
14:18Are you happy with our performance?
14:20I am.
14:20I just hope
14:24that little tango pulls through now.
14:26Can you do a bit of whispering to her?
14:28Yeah, I will, don't you worry.
14:30And do you think you might get her some premium dandelions,
14:33they're under the top quality?
14:34Yes.
14:36Shall we just check her temperature?
14:38I did it, it was like six.
14:39That's not bad.
14:42Tango's starting to come round now from the deep sedative,
14:46and that's the first hurdle over, really,
14:48getting her through that process
14:50so that we can get her cleaned up properly.
14:53Hello, tango.
14:54Hello.
14:56Are you nice and warm in there?
14:58So far, so good.
14:59We're not out of the woods yet.
15:01I've got to keep a very close eye on her.
15:03I'm interested to see how she wheezes.
15:05I'll be keeping everything crossed tonight
15:07and hoping and praying for the best.
15:18On her farm near Huddersfield,
15:21caring for all kinds of creatures is no chore for Fiona.
15:26We're animal lovers.
15:27Animals are our life.
15:29Seriously, the only time we come off of this farm
15:32is if we're going shopping.
15:33OK, that's it.
15:35But today she needs Shona's help with an elderly donkey.
15:39We've got Spot here who's actually 26.
15:43He's gorgeous.
15:45We've only had him for a short time.
15:47He was on the beaches.
15:49So we took him just to retire down really
15:53and just have a nice life.
15:55And why Shona's coming is because of this tooth.
16:00That's actually quite loose now.
16:02It's going to affect his eating.
16:03So this tooth needs to come out.
16:06Knowing there could be more to this than meets the eye,
16:09Shona's brought equine vet, Marco.
16:12Hi, Fiona.
16:13Hello.
16:14This is Marco.
16:16Hiya, pleased to meet you.
16:16Nice to meet you.
16:17Hello, Spot.
16:18Obviously, you can see the tooth.
16:21Shall we have a quick look at what's going on?
16:24Come over here.
16:25Look at them beauties.
16:26That's a Hollywood smile right there, isn't it?
16:30Is it really wobbly, that one?
16:31It's still slightly solid.
16:34Right, they're pretty bad, aren't they?
16:37There's a good chance that there's other problems
16:39going on there as well,
16:40so we need to make sure that we're not missing anything major.
16:43So we'll get set up for now and get some x-rays taken.
16:46All right.
16:47Night-night.
16:51Is that angle working?
16:52Yeah, it's really hard to tell you.
16:53It'll be fine.
17:00You have to see that there is a lot of wobbly on the bottom.
17:03Yeah.
17:04As Shona feared...
17:06..basket all around the side.
17:09It's not smooth.
17:11There is a lot of gas and there is a lot of changes.
17:15Spot's problems are much bigger than just one wobbly tooth.
17:19So the disease he has in his teeth is quite serious
17:23and it's progressive,
17:24so over time it becomes worse and worse.
17:27He can see that he was already missing some of them.
17:30Yeah, yeah.
17:31And that means that this is something that has started quite a while ago.
17:37So there's some changes in the roots of the teeth
17:39where the bone is trying to resolve some of the tooth, basically,
17:43which means it can become significantly more difficult to remove
17:46and it can become very painful.
17:52A drove of donkeys would be Peter's ideal animal gathering.
17:57As opposed to the grumble of maggots he had to deal with
18:00when treating Tango the rabbit.
18:03Little cup.
18:04But his next job is even more daunting.
18:08Making hot drinks for a thirsty bunch of vets and nurses.
18:12Two, three teas.
18:15One black.
18:17I'm going to have to be a bit careful here.
18:19There's quite a few permutations.
18:21Some with sugar.
18:22Some with sweetener.
18:24Some without milk.
18:29So that's milk, milk.
18:31I've written something there, I can't read it.
18:36Coffee.
18:36Something with milk.
18:38Oh, heck.
18:39I don't know what that word I've written there is.
18:41A dash of milk.
18:42That was it, a dash of milk.
18:43I don't want any complaints.
18:45I'm just putting a little bit extra.
18:48That's a dash.
18:52I've got one order for a dash of milk.
18:55And one order for a tiny milk.
18:57That is a dash, isn't it?
18:59No, that's tiny.
19:01Beautiful.
19:02With no exact science to determine a dash from a drop.
19:07This is strong coffee with a dash.
19:10That looks perfect.
19:11Does it?
19:11Yes.
19:12Do you know that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me?
19:15The cuppa code is always tricky to decipher.
19:18Coffee, milk, one sweetener.
19:20Thank you very much, Peter.
19:21Have I got it right?
19:22Yes.
19:23Apart from it's a little bit strong, but it's okay.
19:25Oh, no.
19:28But by and large...
19:29I wasn't sure how much milk, because...
19:31Oh, no, that is lovely.
19:32Is it?
19:33Perfect.
19:34Thank you so much.
19:35I've got it right.
19:36Peter seems to have cracked it.
19:38Well, that could be my epitaph.
19:40It was a decent tea boy.
19:41Yeah.
19:44I've got it.
19:47I've got it.
19:47I've got it.
19:52I've got it.
19:52Over in Wetherby, where Nancy the bulldog is being prepped for surgery.
19:58Hello.
19:58Hiya.
19:59So she's very relaxed and extremely calm and good to go, so you can relax for the next few hours.
20:05Julian thinks caffeine is the sensible option for her owners Anita and Terry.
20:10So a cup of tea, not gin and tonic.
20:12You don't need gin at this time of the day.
20:14All right.
20:14Thank you so much.
20:15Cheers.
20:16Yeah, relax.
20:18But relaxing is easier said than done, because Nancy's owners...
20:22Are we ready?
20:23Yes.
20:24...like Julian and Nurse Lucy...
20:26All right, Dylan.
20:27...know the vital nature of this operation.
20:30Good girl.
20:31Calm down.
20:32She's having problems breathing.
20:35She sounds like a train when she's walking.
20:38Like she's out of breath after so many yards.
20:41There you go.
20:43She has gradually over the last two or three years got worse breathing.
20:48She's got very compromised airways.
20:51Poor girl.
20:52Last time she came, on the way home, her owners thought she'd died.
20:56She went blue and stopped breathing.
20:58Well, we definitely need to do this surgery then.
21:00She had problems in the car going back.
21:03We got her in and I put a bit of water, calmed her down.
21:05And she seems to come round, which, thank God, she was OK.
21:08But after that, we were so frightened with the breathing
21:12that we brought her here today to get sorted out.
21:16It's very common for these dogs to have an abnormal throat,
21:21usually with an enlarged, soft palate,
21:23which is the bit right at the very back of the mouth
21:25that vibrates when we snore when we're asleep in bed.
21:29And in these kind of dogs, it wobbles around and it's too long
21:32and it really interferes with the air that should be flowing
21:35freely and easily down into the airways.
21:38So the surgery we're planning will be to reduce the length
21:42of the soft palate, reduce the noise
21:44and make it much easier for her to breathe.
21:47Three, two, one, go!
21:50It should be successful and it should really help,
21:53but it's going to be quite tense
21:55because everybody's really aware of what might happen
21:57and what could go wrong.
21:58I can go to work.
22:00It's brilliant.
22:04Can I put that across there like that?
22:06Sure.
22:11He's like our daughter.
22:12She's so quiet and loving.
22:16Last night we didn't sleep so good
22:17because she felt like, am I doing right
22:19or am I doing wrong by bringing her here?
22:21And fingers crossed, hopefully, everything goes okay.
22:29All right, everybody.
22:33Coming up...
22:34KP?
22:35How's she doing?
22:37It took two to help Tango.
22:39I wouldn't mind having a look at the bottom.
22:41How will Peter judge the results?
22:43Right.
22:44Oh.
22:44And Shona gets her teeth into a donkey dental.
22:47It's literally a matter of going round and round and round,
22:50applying the pressure.
22:51Before a more enjoyable equine adventure.
22:54Bumble's raring to go.
22:55She says it's very exciting.
22:56There's lots of things going on.
22:58She knows there's something a bit different to our usual hack.
23:10Near Huddersfield, Shona and equine vet Marco have some serious dental work to perform on spot.
23:17We are going to get him ready.
23:20Yeah.
23:20Give him some local anaesthetic.
23:22The elderly donkey used to work on the beaches.
23:25How's that?
23:26Before recently being given a home by Fiona.
23:31Nervous.
23:31Nervous now.
23:33Just crack on her and get him right.
23:37Spot has a disease that means they have to remove a number of his teeth.
23:41They've been causing him some problems and they're really wobbly and just...
23:46You can't be eating as normal.
23:48And one incisor was especially wobbly.
23:52Basically the tooth was already fractured.
23:54The reason why it was wobbly is because there was fracture below the gum line.
23:59It's really important that you get the whole of the tooth out.
24:02If you leave some of the roots, the body can react to it.
24:05You can get an abscess there and you can also leave some patent nerve there
24:09that then causes a lot of oral pain.
24:14Nice, all of it.
24:15Is it all of it?
24:17Yeah.
24:17Yeah.
24:18Tiny little fragment.
24:19Jenna, don't worry.
24:20We will save them for you.
24:23Yeah, I could put him under his pillow tonight.
24:26See what tooth fairy brings.
24:29He's looking at me thinking,
24:30Mum, but in the long run it's going to be better for him.
24:36It just looks very gory, doesn't it, as much as anything.
24:39It's adding what you're thinking to see.
24:44I just put an airbag out for Katie now.
24:47Gives me a bit of a chance to come out as well.
24:50He's a part of my family and it's seeing him like that.
24:53I mean, it just affects your heart a little bit.
24:57If we left them in, more of them would probably fracture like's happened with that one.
25:01And they ultimately become painful because as the disease progresses it becomes very painful.
25:07So we want to get these out before it gets to that point.
25:11That's a good one.
25:13It's literally a matter of going round and round and round, applying the pressure.
25:17It's coming now.
25:19Look at the size of that.
25:21Well done.
25:22Fabulous.
25:25Last one.
25:26Now we just place some swabs in the sockets and we're finished.
25:33We're going to get all this blood off his face because it looks terrible.
25:37And you'll feel better then, won't you, little spot?
25:41Really pleased that he's done really well.
25:44And you two have done amazing.
25:45Thank you so much.
25:46I'm happy it's over with now.
25:50There you go.
25:52Right, so you know what you're doing with all the medications?
25:55Yes.
25:55And everything like that.
25:56And he's come round nicely.
25:58He has.
25:58Yeah, grand.
26:00Right, so just stay in touch and let us know how he's getting on.
26:03And then we'll come out in a couple of days and check how his teeth are looking.
26:06All the abs and so.
26:07Yeah, abs and so.
26:08Yeah.
26:09Thank you so much.
26:11That's all right.
26:12He's been great, hasn't he?
26:13Starfish.
26:14Yeah, he has.
26:15And you're beautiful, aren't you, Spot?
26:29Over in Kirby Moorside.
26:31Tango.
26:32Tango the rabbit has spent the night at the practice after Peter treated her for a serious
26:38maggot infestation.
26:40I'm eager to see how she's getting on this morning, whether she's made it through the night.
26:45I was hopeful that she would, but the rabbits sometimes you just can't tell.
26:51KP, how's she doing?
26:52She's doing really good.
26:54She's a lot brighter than she was last night.
26:55She was eating loads of dandelions, loads of grass.
26:57Did they detect there that she was a little bit aggressive towards your hand?
27:01Yeah, I think she's feeling a bit better now.
27:03She wasn't like that yesterday, was she?
27:05No.
27:05And they say they shouldn't bite the hand that feeds you.
27:08I think she's protesting, isn't she?
27:10She is.
27:12I wouldn't mind having a look at the bottom.
27:16That's incredible.
27:18Absolutely incredible.
27:19It looks so much better.
27:21When you think how sore that was yesterday, and look at it now, a lot of that inflammation
27:26has gone, and this skin is healing remarkably quickly.
27:31I'm just going to put a little bit more cream on there.
27:35A little bit rounder vent as well.
27:39Right.
27:40Oh.
27:41I think the other way, don't worry about us.
27:44It just goes to show the power of healing that some of our patients have.
27:49This is incredible, really.
27:51She says, get me home.
27:53Excellent.
27:54Well, I think we will get her home.
27:56I'm going to take her home with me.
27:58Yeah.
27:58And hand her over.
28:01Jolly good.
28:02Lucky girl.
28:04Right.
28:04But we'll find a carrier, and we'll take her.
28:08Right, little tango.
28:10In you go.
28:12Ooh, good girl.
28:25While Shona might enjoy helping a donkey that's poorly.
28:29Good girl.
28:30When it comes to unwinding after work, her main equine enthusiasm is for horses.
28:36So this is Bumble.
28:38Bumble's a five-year-old mare.
28:39I've had her just coming up to two years now.
28:42She's a lovely little horse.
28:44Let's go.
28:45And today is a big day for Bumble, who's getting her first chance to properly stretch her legs away from
28:52the yard.
28:55So I've kind of been on that journey with her.
28:57I was one of the first people to sit on her when we were getting her used to all of
29:00that.
29:00So it's been really good because I've learned a lot going through that journey.
29:04And you do get a different kind of bond with the horse when you go through all that.
29:07So she's really special.
29:12A little bit excited now, aren't they?
29:14I know.
29:14Because they know.
29:15I'm holding on to my hold on, Bumble.
29:18Bumble's raring to go.
29:19She says it's very exciting.
29:20There's lots of things going on.
29:21She knows there's something a bit different to our usual hack.
29:24Well, look after you, Shona.
29:26How's she feeling, Shona?
29:28Yeah, she feels pretty good.
29:29You can't dictate until then we've got to ask her now.
29:31Yeah.
29:32We can tell her girl then.
29:34It's like men and women, really.
29:36It is, really.
29:38Do you fancy a little cantor up here?
29:40I think so.
29:41Yeah?
29:41Is she good to go?
29:42We'll see.
29:43I think we might get some control.
29:44I might hold on.
29:55Good girl.
30:00I'm really happy with her for the first time going round something like this.
30:03Because there's quite a lot going on, and especially with the other horses as well.
30:06When we could let her go and run on those last two, she's just absolutely loved it.
30:10But she did stop at the end, which I was a bit worried.
30:13I might lose control, but she was so good.
30:16You're good, aren't you?
30:18She's such a good little horse.
30:20So, yeah.
30:21That's what it's all about, isn't it?
30:22A really fun day.
30:24Yeah.
30:37Yeah.
30:38While some creatures can gallop across the Yorkshire countryside, one poor bulldog has
30:43been struggling on short walks because of breathing problems.
30:47Do you think you could move the lights a bit?
30:50Yeah.
30:52Perfect.
30:53Absolutely perfect.
30:54So Julian and Lucy are operating on Nancy.
30:59So this is the action zone.
31:02This is the soft palate here.
31:04The bit at the back of the throat that in a lot of these dogs is far too long and
31:08floppy.
31:08And that obstructs the airways, particularly when dogs get excited.
31:12So I'm going to cut it off.
31:18You've always got to make the judgment how much to cut off.
31:23And you don't want to take too much off, because that's dangerous.
31:35Right, I'm going to take that off.
31:39Are you all right?
31:40Just with your spare hand, just to hold those faucets.
31:42Just like perfect.
31:43Absolutely perfect.
31:45This cuts and cauterises at the same time.
31:47So this is really helpful for this kind of surgery.
32:04There we are.
32:06I think that's going to be enough, so let's just lift it up again.
32:08It's sort of folded up on itself now, but that's going to be enough.
32:17That is quite a lot though, really, isn't it?
32:20So the bit that I've taken off is about half a centimetre across the back of the soft palate.
32:26Hopefully that's just right.
32:27If not, we can re-operate at another time, but that's, I reckon, the right amount for today.
32:37The next hurdle to get over is the recovery from this.
32:41So at the moment, Nancy's actually going quite well.
32:43She's got a tube in a windpipe, so she's never been as pink as this, and she's never had as
32:49much oxygen
32:50coursing around her body as she has over the last half hour.
32:54Shall I lower her head a little bit?
32:56Yeah, why not?
32:58Yeah.
32:59This will be a stressful time, just making sure that she can breathe properly when she's awake.
33:06So we'll have everything crossed hopefully, and she'll be all right.
33:10The crux point, really, is when this tube comes out to see how well she's going to breathe unaided.
33:20Still to come.
33:21Here she is.
33:22Hello, Tango.
33:24After keeping Tango in the night, Peter's making dreams come true.
33:28She says, that's a lost Tango for me, Graceland.
33:31But Spot's nightmare's not quite over.
33:34He's going to go back to the land of Nod while we have a look at his teeth.
33:37Will Shona give him the all clear?
33:39I'm a little frustrated, I know.
33:49In Thirsk, after monitoring Vicky and her daughter Georgia's rabbit overnight, Peter is personally returning Tango.
34:01Minus all those maggots.
34:04Here she is.
34:06Hello, Tango.
34:07You look a little bit livelier.
34:09She certainly is.
34:10Yeah.
34:11She is.
34:12That's the last Tango for me and Graceland, right?
34:15Which is completely different from how she was yesterday.
34:19Oh, she looked awful yesterday, didn't she?
34:23Oh, there she goes.
34:25Hello, you.
34:26Don't run off me.
34:28Oh, she looks loads better, doesn't she?
34:30Did you have to clip it all?
34:31Oh, yeah, you completely clipped.
34:32Oh, yeah.
34:33Yeah.
34:33It took us about an hour.
34:35I think just once a day, check around her bum and make sure it's keeping clean around there.
34:40She's on a luxurious vet bed at the moment.
34:42Yeah.
34:43And this is ideal for her.
34:45Maybe just keep her on that for another day or so and put some hay in for her to eat,
34:49obviously.
34:49Right, yeah.
34:51I've injected her today, but in three days' time, can you just pop that either under her skin or into
34:56the fleshy part of her thigh and that should be sufficient then.
34:59Perfect.
34:59Her urine looks nice and clear and her poos are good, so I think we should be all right.
35:05On the road to recovery, eh?
35:07Well, George, you'll be able to keep an eye on her now, won't she?
35:10Yeah, of course she will.
35:11You'll look after her, won't you?
35:12Yeah.
35:12You don't play a nurse, can't you?
35:13Mmm.
35:16Unbelievable, the difference in her.
35:18I wasn't actually too sure whether she was going to make it.
35:22Very excited to have her back.
35:24Yeah.
35:25Yeah, I missed her.
35:27It's been lovely, really, to reunite Tango with Vicky and her daughter, Georgia.
35:34And I'm sure they'll be watching out now very carefully in future to make sure this doesn't happen again.
35:48Over in Wetherby, it's the moment of truth for Nancy the Bulldog.
35:53Good girl.
35:54Well done.
35:55Julian and Lucy are anxious to see if she can breathe unaided.
35:59Come on, sweet pea.
36:01After operating to clear her airways.
36:05We've taken the tube out, what's technically known as extubation, and so far Nancy's looking pretty good.
36:11She's still pink and she's still making no noise with the breathing, whereas beforehand she sounded like a steam train.
36:19So, so far so good.
36:22Nancy's owners, Anita and Terry, have been keeping their fingers crossed all day.
36:27I've been very anxious this morning.
36:29It's really worrying whether she's going to be okay or not.
36:32We just can't wait to see her again.
36:34It'll be fantastic.
36:36You feel better now?
36:38It says, I feel like a breath of fresh air.
36:40I feel so much better.
36:42Yeah.
36:42Come on, Nancy.
36:43Yeah.
36:45Nancy, take it easy.
36:47Oops.
36:49Hey, Julie.
36:55See you.
36:57Bye-bye.
36:58So she was very calm and totally noise-free, but she's obviously got a bit excited.
37:03I took off about that much.
37:05Okay.
37:05It was quite long.
37:06It wasn't ridiculously long, but it was very, very floppy, so it should be better now.
37:10All right?
37:11Thank you all.
37:12Okay.
37:12No problem.
37:13Bye, Nancy.
37:14Take it easy.
37:15Bye-bye.
37:15See you.
37:16Bye.
37:19Look at her.
37:21Can I go in, darling?
37:23We'll put your bed out for you.
37:25Come on then.
37:26Go in here.
37:27Good girl.
37:29Overwhelmed, we're seeing her in the conditions you're in.
37:31She looks really good, don't she?
37:34Already, it's noticeable how easier her breathing is.
37:38There's a lot less noise.
37:39I think her owners are highly relieved that she's made it through without any problems,
37:43and hopefully this is the first stage in a new chapter of Nancy's life.
37:51And a few weeks later...
37:52Good girl.
37:54Come on.
37:54Come on, Nancy.
37:55Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief.
37:58We've got money in.
37:59I've got some relief.
37:59Come on then.
38:00What do you think you are?
38:01Come on then.
38:02Let her off.
38:04Since she's had the operation, the breathing's a lot better.
38:08She can exercise better.
38:11She still sounds a bit noisy, but she couldn't breathe either with it.
38:14You know, it was so stressful.
38:16The breathing and everything is so good now.
38:19Yeah.
38:19She's exercising a lot better.
38:20She's a different dog, isn't she?
38:21Oh, yes, she has been 100% different.
38:24You're like little girls, you know, because she sees you.
38:27You want a stick, don't you?
38:28Eh?
38:29Throw it, Terry.
38:30Go on, Nancy.
38:32And thanks to the operation...
38:34But shall we give it now?
38:36Nancy can even give Terry the runaround.
38:38Give me it here.
38:39Come on.
38:41Come on.
38:42Come on.
38:43Come on.
38:44Oi.
38:46Good girl, Nancy.
38:47Clever girl.
38:49Oh, that's so sweet.
38:53Come on, Nancy.
38:54You're all talking, yeah, yeah.
38:56I can't thank Julian on the team enough.
38:59She's happy again.
39:01Yeah.
39:02Again.
39:04Yeah.
39:09Yeah.
39:09Yeah.
39:11Yeah.
39:11Yeah.
39:13Yeah.
39:14Yeah.
39:15Yeah.
39:16Yeah.
39:17Fiona's come back to see Fiona's donkey's spot.
39:20After she had to remove a number of his teeth to prevent painful problems.
39:25It was quite a big ordeal Spot went through.
39:27So today we're hoping that there's no infection in the roots.
39:31Hopefully things are looking good and he's heading the right way.
39:37Hello.
39:38Hiya.
39:39You all right?
39:40Yes, thanks.
39:41I'll shut this because I don't think he's going to be keen to see us today.
39:45Hello Spot.
39:46Right.
39:47How's things been going with him?
39:48We've still kept him in so he can have all his antibiotics and his painkillers and things.
39:53He's been a little bit edgy, keeping it out of our way.
39:56Mm-hm.
39:57But apart from that, spot on.
39:59Spot on, spot on.
40:00Aw.
40:01Right, what we'll do then is give him a little bit of sedation again.
40:04And then we can have a look at the teeth and pull all the swabs out basically.
40:08Right.
40:08Clean it all up.
40:09I'm sorry little man.
40:11Good lad.
40:12I'm sorry because you know what's coming, don't you?
40:15He's going to go back to the land of nod while we have a look at his teeth.
40:18Come on, sweetheart.
40:20You can do it.
40:23Okay, right, so let's get some of these swabs out.
40:27Good boy.
40:29These swabs have been in there just packing out the holes in the mouth.
40:34They can't stay in long term because they're going to irritate everything in there and stop the healing process.
40:40So they're just a temporary thing in the initial part of the recovery.
40:45Good boy.
40:47It looks good.
40:49There's no well-mouthed feel when you think they're just constantly dirty, you know?
40:52Yeah.
40:53So this is just flushing away any of the bits of food material that are in there.
40:57So this has just got a little bit of disinfectant in it.
41:00And then we're going to flush it out with plain water after that.
41:03We're removing all the little bits of bone that have kind of broken off after the procedure.
41:08And then it's in the best position it can be in to heal.
41:12You've got a little flush baby.
41:13I know.
41:15I know.
41:16You know, it's on my nosey while she's there.
41:18Look at the size of them.
41:20You can see the nice pink healthy tissue that's here in it.
41:23And it's all bleeding and good fresh blood.
41:26Yeah.
41:26There's no bits in there.
41:28So will you leave these open now then?
41:29Yeah.
41:30They're going to stay open.
41:31And then it's just got to sort itself out and heal.
41:34So if food goes in there now, it's not that much of an issue?
41:37It's not really.
41:38Like, they cope amazingly well with it, really.
41:40What's it, darling?
