00:00In part one of this special two-part finale, the team began the arduous task of converting a 1973 Challenger
00:09318 into a 1971 Challenger RT Supercar.
00:14Going far beyond the pale of original equipment manufacturing, this one-off Challenger tribute had to undergo major metal repair
00:23and modifications to accommodate the massive 6.2-liter Hellcat Crate Hemi and 6-speed manual transmission.
00:32Self-titled number one painter Will Scott laid out a perfect finish of EV2 Hemi Orange using PPG's Deltron Base
00:40Coat Clear Coat System. Even the undercarriage glowed.
00:44Passing on the rare and timeless craft of auto upholstery, Magic Marty solicitously coached greenhorn Dylan Scott, Will's son, in
00:52the golden art of headliner installation.
00:55Quickly changing hats from upholstery technician to assembly assistant, Dylan helped Brian install the fuel system specifically engineered for the
01:03Hellcat.
01:04Following the fuel tank installation, Brian flew solo as teacher and technician in plumbing out the Pro Touring Store regulator
01:11system and factory exact replica fuel lines from inline tube.
01:16The final note of the mechanical crescendo was the installation of the Magnum Force Transformer front suspension along with a
01:24707-horsepower Crate Hemi and 6-speed Tremec manual transmission.
01:30That brings us to now.
01:32Sit back and watch this one-off Mopar supercar come to life with blinding colors, raucous sounds, and neck snapping
01:42speed.
02:07If you didn't have Mark Orman, you'd have to invent him.
02:12How did I get here?
02:14How did I get here?
02:14And the skies are not cloudy all day.
02:25I have no idea why my dad is crazy.
02:28It's not easy being the number one man.
02:33Mark hates everybody.
02:35He always has.
02:38When they open his heart
02:41And the sky's not cloudy all day
02:53And the skies are not cloudy all day
02:59They're coming to get you, Barbara.
03:04So this is a pretty sanitary system once you have everything in place.
03:08I wanted to show you just how sanitary everything fits in these cars when it's done right.
03:12So, of course, we've got our Magnum Force K-member here.
03:15This is really cool.
03:16This is what's going to house our rack and pinion.
03:19Okay, so we've got a rack and pinion with a bellow right here.
03:23This is your inner tie rod in here.
03:26Then you have the adjuster sleeve and the lock down.
03:30And then out here at the end, that's going to be your outer tie rod end.
03:33So now you have power rack and pinion steering.
03:36Along the same lines with your Magnum Force stuff, we've got this nice lower A-arm control arm.
03:42If you look how beefy that is.
03:44Double welded on both sides.
03:46Solid stuff.
03:47Got our big sway bar.
03:48Over here, you'll see that we're running a 73 and up style spindle.
03:53Magnum Force upper control arm.
03:56And these beautiful, beautiful Viking coil-over fully adjustable shocks.
04:01So all together, bolted in, that whole Mary Ann is just a really nice fit.
04:05And we know it's going to function nice.
04:07We have our transmission cross-member.
04:09This is a Silver Sport piece.
04:10And you'll notice that it drops down quite a bit.
04:12Because these things are huge.
04:14They're like, I don't know, 13 inches tall.
04:16Something like that compared to an original, say, a Hemi Force Speed.
04:19Look at the side of that profile right there.
04:21We've got our TTI headers, which is just a really nice header.
04:24It's got a ceramic coating on it.
04:26It has the O2 sensor.
04:27Very important.
04:28But again, just at a glance, if you stand here and you look at it, it's just really sanitary stuff.
04:34Work our way to the back.
04:35Of course, we have our Dana Mosher.
04:37This is a replica of the Dana Mosher axle.
04:41We put three 54 gears in it.
04:43Of course, this uses the, I think, 1350 U-joint versus the original 7290 Mopar U-joint.
04:50But it's fine because the drive shaft we have made, we just have it made with that on one end.
04:55Take a look at that.
04:56We've got our original leaf springs.
04:58This is factory Hemi leaf spring package with the mounting plate, U-bolts, and shocks.
05:06Everything from here forward while custom is all maintaining the spirit of an original car.
05:13Like the Dana is in the spirit of an original.
05:15The Hemi suspension, that is original.
05:18The crossmember, in the spirit of an original crossmember.
05:21I like to try to keep it as close to original as possible, even though they never had a 707
05:25horsepower engine.
05:26I'm going to let the car down, and I want to show you just how tight the tolerances are.
05:30Because a lot of people are saying, well, it will or it won't fit.
05:32So you see how we literally have to shoehorn this in.
05:40All right, guys.
05:41So what I want to do is just show that how, even though it's way too big for the engine
05:45compartment, it does actually fit.
05:47And how some of the things that were original in 1970, 71, we can kind of piggyback off of and
05:53still make this in the spirit of an original car.
05:55But obviously the motors doesn't belong in there.
05:58First thing is how high this supercharger is.
06:01Look at how far up this thing sticks.
06:03You would think, because of the size of that supercharger, that it would hit the hood.
06:08And that's what we were afraid of too.
06:10Our TA Challenger that we did for SEMA didn't have that problem because it's got a TA hood on it,
06:14which is a big opening in the bottom side of the hood with the scoop.
06:16Because this gets a sport hood, J54 bulge hood, if you look at the inner structure on the bulge hood,
06:22it goes up too.
06:23It actually, within half of an inch, mimics this shape right here.
06:29Almost like it was intended, but obviously it wasn't.
06:32You'll see like an original reservoir right here.
06:35This is our processor for the computer.
06:37The tight clearances.
06:39First off, look how busy all this real estate is.
06:41Look at how close this head is right here to the inner fender.
06:47This is almost like a 426 Hemi would be down in there.
06:49At the back, you have your cooler and the sensor for the supercharger.
06:54There is no gap just enough to put your finger in there.
06:57That's how tight that is.
06:59We still have room for our original windshield washer reservoir right there.
07:02These are part of the lines for the vintage air.
07:06That's a really clean system that we're able to use.
07:08You'd never be able to put a factory air system in this car.
07:11But that vintage one is very, very clean and it's very, very consolidated.
07:15You just have this one liquid line going here.
07:18Fans are built right onto our Be Cool radiator.
07:21This is a phenomenal system.
07:22We just call up, tell them what our specs are for the opening,
07:26and they build the brackets perfectly to match.
07:29It comes with these electric fans.
07:31There are two of them.
07:32One of them is for the engine operating.
07:34The other one's when the air kicks on,
07:36so it can move more air through the condenser.
07:38So moving around to the front of the car,
07:40show you some of the plumbing out here.
07:42Here is very, very busy as well.
07:45Our receiver dryer, which goes out here.
07:47Very compact unit.
07:49And that's the high-pressure sideline that goes over to the other side.
07:52Our radiator for our intercooler for our supercharger,
07:55which is what this is.
07:56And of course, this big black finned aluminum piece back here
07:59is our AC condenser, our vintage air replica of an original one.
08:02It just fits really nicely in here.
08:04The hoses haven't had all the connections made to them,
08:07but they will make that.
08:09And it'll all be nicely fit in behind that grill.
08:13Remember, all of this stuff's visible through the grill.
08:15So before we actually put the grill assembly on,
08:18we will paint these lines black like the factory would have done.
08:21You look down there at that alternator,
08:23you'll see a slot in the frame rail
08:25where we have cut that frame rail pinch weld out
08:28because you can see how close it would be.
08:29You can't put that in there with that alternator mounting location
08:33without making that provision.
08:34This side, you see a lot of similarities to the factory.
08:38I mean, this is an original Midland Ross nickel cadmium plated power brake booster.
08:43That's what you would have had in 71.
08:44Dual master cylinder because we do have disc brakes in the front.
08:47We have drums in the back.
08:49We kept true to that.
08:50Original date coated windshield wiper motor, three speed.
08:54Two speed would stick out here and hit into the engine.
08:57So just like with a cold air induction car,
08:59would have been mandatory to have the three speed wiper.
09:02This one is also mandatory.
09:03Plus it's a nice feature to have.
09:05Look at the clearance between that wiper motor and the crossover for the cooler.
09:10How tight that area is right there.
09:13How tight the area is here between the clutch master cylinder,
09:18by the way, which is a really cool Willwood product.
09:20Look at the gap between that coil pack and that.
09:23It literally is about a quarter of an inch.
09:25You look at the wiper motor,
09:27look at the clearance between that crossover tube for the inner cooler
09:30and the motor right there.
09:31Real, real tight.
09:33Probably whatever the thickness of that fat little finger is,
09:35half of an inch, maybe something like that.
09:37We're not going to be able to get a lot of flex out of those mounts
09:40or we're going to start interfering and hitting things.
09:43Right here, we've got a ton of clearance,
09:44real nice looking clearance between what would be the header and the apron,
09:48which is different than a 426 Hemi.
09:49Because on an original version 426 Hemi,
09:52that valve cover would damn near be touching that inner fender.
09:55But the rest of it, the original wiring harness,
09:57we're running our analog gauge.
09:59Actually, I think the gauges,
10:00and this is one of the new Dakota gauges I'm going to show you,
10:03which is super cool.
10:04And because this car is going home to Canada,
10:06it's getting a kilometer style instrument cluster.
10:10Got our Magnum Force power steering pump,
10:13Be Cool Reservoir built right onto the tank.
10:15All that came with it.
10:16So with all that, the next thing we're going to do,
10:18I'm going to get Brian,
10:19and we're going to start working on the cool fluorescent orange striping
10:22that goes down the side, gets those,
10:23and you'll be able to see what it looks like
10:25with the painted dog dish wheels on it.
10:27So let's get this thing moved.
10:31When Great Yard Cars returns.
10:33I like chow.
10:35That's the Italian in me.
10:363% Italian.
10:373 whole percent?
10:38I want to see the DNA test.
10:40Italians have hair.
10:42Magnaflow actually makes a bolt-in system
10:44that works with the Hellcat,
10:46which tells you how popular that engine is right now.
10:48It is a nice system.
10:50Now, there was one drawback.
10:53This system is going in a little bit backwards.
10:56Oh, .
10:57Okay, we lost her, bud.
11:02So I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Magnaflow
11:05actually makes a bolt-in system for a 1971 E-body.
11:09In fact, they make a bolt-in system that works with the Hellcat,
11:12which tells you how popular that engine is right now.
11:15So once I got everything unpackaged and laid out on the floor,
11:19I started test-fitting it into the car,
11:21and I was able to get everything mocked into place,
11:24mark everything very carefully.
11:26Once I had the system where I knew it was going to be happy,
11:28I took it back out again and handed it off to Shane.
11:31So Shane's our body man, but he's also a really good welder.
11:34I've watched him over the years that I've worked here,
11:36and I've walked by when I'm fetching parts in the yard or whatever,
11:40and I've seen him do lots of welding,
11:41and I'm quite impressed, actually.
11:44This system is going in a little bit backwards of what we normally do.
11:50You guys usually see us work at the front, work our way to the back,
11:53but with this system from Magnaflow,
11:56we actually have to do it the way we're doing it now.
11:58So I'm going to hold it in place over the axle
12:00while he slides it into a factory hanger, by the way.
12:04That is a factory hanger back there.
12:06So go ahead and grab the other one.
12:08It is a nice system.
12:10I'm liking the fact that, number one, it's designed for the Hellcat.
12:13So it has that right amount of breathing, the right amount of sound,
12:16the right amount of resonating,
12:17instead of us taking a factory Mopar system and making it work.
12:21So we go up into the hanger at the back.
12:25He guides it. I push it back.
12:26We tape the bottom of the balance so these things can hang.
12:30Now, we've already welded the mufflers to the headpipes
12:34and the headpipes to the collectors.
12:36So we're going to put this in as one big unit,
12:40which is clumsy, so bear with us.
12:42Yeah, it's a bit on the heavy side.
12:43The best we can do.
12:44When we install our systems here, typically on these Mopars,
12:48we'll start at the exhaust manifold
12:50and I'll work our way all the way back to the exhaust tips.
12:53With the Magnaflow system,
12:55we actually had to start and reverse engineer it, if you will,
12:59reverse the order that we installed it.
13:01So starting from the tips, moving back up to, in this case, the TTI headers.
13:06I will go in first.
13:08You guys will see a motorcycle strap here.
13:12And it helps in case we drop it, right?
13:14Yeah, it really does.
13:15I can set it up there.
13:16At least get it over the top so it doesn't fall to the ground.
13:19You'll notice that we installed electric exhaust cutouts in the system
13:22because that's what the customer wanted.
13:24And I'll probably hide the switch somewhere, maybe by the ashtray under the dash.
13:30Nobody will know it's there.
13:31Now we'll walk that in there.
13:34So now I've got to go up parallel so he can slide that onto the tailpipes.
13:39And if you see I'm below the collectors, you let me know when you have a good vibe on it.
13:43Give her a little push.
13:45That's pretty good right there on that side.
13:47There we go.
13:48Liking it.
13:49Liking it.
13:50We're going to need to get these bolts in right up here.
13:52All right.
13:52I'm going to ratchet this up a little bit here.
13:57Okay, we lost her, bud.
14:03We're going to need to get these bolts in right up here.
14:06All right.
14:06I'm going to ratchet this up a little bit here.
14:10Okay, we lost her, bud.
14:11Okay.
14:12That's okay.
14:13We'll go.
14:14As I mentioned before, this system was welded together first and then we had to put it into the car.
14:20So starting from the rear, we have a system that has the pipes that go over the rear axle.
14:26We've got the mufflers.
14:28We've got the exhaust tips.
14:30It's a bulky, chunky, heavy piece of metal that we're trying to lift up into the car.
14:37And I'm really glad that I had an extra set of hands for that.
14:40It came out the back.
14:42Yeah.
14:42Both of them did.
14:43Do you want to just try to put them in as one or do you want to take it back
14:47apart and put them in?
14:48One more time.
14:50You can go to the back probably.
14:52I probably can go to the back if you've got the front.
14:54Okay.
14:55Yeah, we'll be fine.
14:56This is just one of the things we're kind of cheating.
14:59Yep.
15:00Okay.
15:01Towards you a little?
15:02Towards me?
15:03Yep.
15:03Okay.
15:05I don't know if we can.
15:06I think we're going to have to come all the way apart.
15:08Okay.
15:09Maybe.
15:09Oh, there we go.
15:11So once we had the tailpipe assembly slid into the mufflers and through the muffler hangers,
15:17we were able to move forward and make the final connections at the collectors.
15:21These are a three inch collector and each one takes three nuts and bolts.
15:26Well, the old graveyard has changed.
15:28We're a sellout now.
15:29That's what Darren would say.
15:30Why are you sold out, buddy?
15:32You used to be OEM.
15:33Only OEM.
15:34That was all you were going to do.
15:35Now look at you, you butcher.
15:36So I'm going to jump in here on the rare occasion that I ever do, but I'm going to have
15:41to agree with Mark.
15:42I promise you people, Darren literally drove everybody crazy.
15:46Go back to the early days with him and just listen to the negativity.
15:50That's who he really is.
15:53You know what you do.
15:54I don't know what you're talking about.
15:55They want me to quit playing the game.
15:57You need some help.
15:58I don't know.
15:59I don't know what the game is.
16:00Why do you guys fight so much?
16:01Don't even start, dude.
16:03You are the culprit of this whole entire thing.
16:05You.
16:05Mark's going to destroy our relationship.
16:07Come on, buddy.
16:08We need you in there.
16:09Hey, can we kill the breaker in there for the light?
16:14I'm pretty easy to get along with.
16:16I'm going to forgive her.
16:17You know, just like I'm going to forgive Holly today.
16:18I'm trying to figure out why Mark actually hired you.
16:22It's a wonder she's made it this long.
16:25Oh, no.
16:26Darren, will you stop that?
16:28You're sick.
16:29You're sick.
16:30All you're trying to do is wind me up.
16:31No, I thought you're an OEM guy.
16:33I am an OEM guy.
16:34What's wrong?
16:35Because you need to stop.
16:36What's wrong with you?
16:37You're getting in my head and I hate you right now.
16:40This is an antibiotic-free pumpkin.
16:42Yes, it is.
16:43What?
16:44Take that pumpkin back where you got it.
16:45I'm just worried about you and your job.
16:47I like you and I don't want you to have to leave or anything.
16:52There you go.
16:53That is exactly what life was like around here 10 years ago.
16:57Some of you at home, you guys may like it.
16:59You might love it.
17:00If you do, just head over to our YouTube channel,
17:03sit back and watch all the Darren you'd like.
17:05Putting Hellcats and stuff and headers and stainless steel exhausts.
17:11Yeah, well, it pays the bills.
17:15All right, I'm happy with those.
17:16Okay.
17:17I don't think they're going anywhere.
17:18Here's some collectors and some bolts then.
17:20All right.
17:22You want to do one side at a time, you think?
17:24I think they're, yeah, they're really close.
17:26This is a beautiful alignment right here.
17:31All right, let's see what we do.
17:32I just can't say how nice it is when everything lines up like it should.
17:35No twists in, no plan.
17:37Did you get the header?
17:38Yep.
17:38That's neat.
17:39And you put the Mopar bolts directional front to back like Mopar did.
17:44I like it.
17:45That's the way I like it.
17:46Cheers, mate.
17:47You like that whole cheers thing?
17:49Cheers, mate.
17:50Sure, why not?
17:51I don't know.
17:51If you're from England, it's fine.
17:54Down under?
17:55Yeah, Australia, but not if you're from America.
17:57You know, don't come from New York saying cheers.
17:59I like chow.
18:00That's the Italian in me, you know.
18:02Chow.
18:03You have no Italian, didn't you?
18:04Yeah, sure I do.
18:04Your last name's Hilkey.
18:05Right, it's German.
18:06England, you know.
18:08But I did the DNA thing.
18:10May I say it?
18:11Yes.
18:11That'd be great, thank you.
18:123% Italian.
18:140.3?
18:15No, no, 3.
18:163 whole percent?
18:173%.
18:17You know, that's bull****.
18:193% is a lie.
18:20I want to see the DNA test.
18:21That's impossible.
18:22Italians have hair, okay?
18:24He doesn't have any hair.
18:25Was Uncle Fester Italian from the Adams family?
18:28I don't think so.
18:29Pac-Man.
18:30Pac-Man?
18:31Was he Italian?
18:32No.
18:32There's no Italian in them, and he has no Italian.
18:35That's why he's bald as an eagle.
18:37That dog don't hunt.
18:393% or nothing.
18:41I mean, I know you're a math guy.
18:43Three wholes.
18:44Okay.
18:443 whole percent.
18:45All right.
18:45Well, I'm getting ready to do mine because I believe I am exactly 50% German and 50% Italian.
18:52Really?
18:53That's what I think, which is exactly what Rambo was.
18:57So once we were done comparing DNA results, we got the rest of the bolts in and finished tightening up
19:03the system.
19:04There you go.
19:05Look at that.
19:06Beautiful fit there.
19:07As Hannibal would say, you got to love it when a plan comes together.
19:10Oh boy.
19:16Hey, when I stand back and take a look at this system completely installed, it really does look nice.
19:22In fact, it looks like something the factory would have installed.
19:25We're going to be using these systems a lot down the road.
19:31After the break.
19:32I have never seen this color combination before, and I seriously doubt that I'll ever see it again.
19:36The factory code was H5X9.
19:40See, Mark's not the only one who knows codes around here.
19:42I'm Mike Mancini from Performance Car Graphics.
19:45I came out today to deliver Mark a very special set of stripes.
19:48Holy cow.
19:50Holy cow.
19:51Keep in mind folks, even though we make these decals perfect, it's up to you to install them correctly.
19:56See, you got a hair in there.
20:05Once we finished the assembly of the exhaust, I was able to start putting the interior together.
20:09Hey listen, I've really been looking forward to this one because of the hemi orange paint with the houndstooth interior.
20:15I have never seen this color combination before, and I seriously doubt that I'll ever see it again for a
20:20long time.
20:21If ever.
20:24How can you not love that pattern?
20:25I mean, that is so 1970s.
20:28And remember, this isn't custom.
20:30This is something you could actually order from the factory in 1971.
20:33Hey, and for those of you out there who might be thinking about ordering that interior trim kit for your
20:37car,
20:38the factory code was H5X9.
20:42See, Mark's not the only one who knows codes around here.
20:51I'm Mike Mancini from Performance Car Graphics.
20:54I also own Instrument Specialties.
20:56I came out today to deliver Mark a very special set of stripes, fluorescent orange, which is a very rare
21:01color on Mopars.
21:03You don't see it very often, and this being put on an orange car should be really spectacular.
21:08I've never seen it before.
21:09How on earth did you come up with the color?
21:14Nobody's making the fluorescent orange decal.
21:18How did you know what that was?
21:20Mike's been out a few times now, and I always enjoy his visits.
21:24Mike is at the top of the game.
21:27He has won so many accolades.
21:29He's in every magazine in the country.
21:31I mean, back to back to back to back, he wins OE gold for everything that he does.
21:35And it's not just Mopar.
21:36He does everything.
21:37We showed you what he did on the 66 Hemi Charger.
21:39His attention to detail is absolutely the best in the industry.
21:45The very, very best.
21:46So I have a lot I can learn from him, too.
21:48It goes way back to the beginnings of the business, partially.
21:52Dave Paddock, who was the original founder of Performance Car Graphics, he had this vinyl produced.
21:58He had it printed and manufactured for him.
22:02And so that's why Performance Car Graphics...
22:05Oh, you have the bulk?
22:06Yeah.
22:06Oh.
22:07Yes.
22:07So when we run out of it, we need more printed.
22:10This has to be silkscreen printed again.
22:12Holy cow.
22:14Holy cow.
22:15Now, see, guys, I don't just hold people to a high standard.
22:19I hold ourselves to the same high standard.
22:20What you see us doing here is as good as we can do possibly on a Mopar.
22:25That's what Mike does.
22:26That's what Instrument Specialties does.
22:29Detail is where it's all at.
22:30It's a little bit difficult to see on this one because this has the UV protectant clear overlay on it.
22:36But you can feel slightly the different layers.
22:39Each color is its own layer application of ink.
22:42It's very important to us to make the colors 100% correct on all of these small printed decals.
22:47All the original small printed decals were done with a silkscreen printing method.
22:51We've honored that original process and we do the same thing in all of our reproductions.
22:55And so you can feel a slight ridge over every color separation.
23:01Right, right.
23:01This one is a little bit more obvious.
23:04More prominent.
23:04It's only the yellow vinyl and the red ink.
23:07You can feel and you can see...
23:09It bridges right over it and you can...
23:11A definite change from the vinyl to the ink.
23:16He duplicates the factory.
23:18So it's not a single layer that has ink printed on it.
23:22It's multiple layers.
23:24The one color, then the next color, then the next color, the way the factory did it.
23:28That's the kind of attention to detail that if you exercise it, you can have a car that when it's
23:34setting at a show,
23:35everybody that walks by is going to just notice it's a little bit...
23:38Something about it's a little nicer, a little better.
23:40Something grabs your attention.
23:42It's all those details when they come to fruition.
23:44We spend a lot of extra time on the colors because if you select a color and then you silkscreen
23:50it,
23:51you may not get the right coverage.
23:52It may be a little different.
23:54It might be lighter, darker.
23:55So we really play around and spend a lot of time to ensure that all the color applications and layers
23:59ultimately are exactly to the originals.
24:02I'm colorblind as a bat, but that's kind of an orangish yellow.
24:05That's almost a school bus yellow.
24:07Yeah, correct.
24:07Isn't it?
24:08Yeah.
24:08Oh, gosh.
24:09That's funny because a lot of them I see, they're bright.
24:12Yep.
24:12They're bright yellow because you think it's purple and yellow with the orange stock at the back.
24:17Or they don't do enough layers to get proper coverage.
24:20Right.
24:21Transparent then.
24:22That's one of the inherent problems with digital printing.
24:23If they print this and they do a one layer print, you're only going to get that one layer of
24:28yellow on that reflective and it's going to be light.
24:30Got it.
24:31But when you do the proper applications of all the silkscreen layers, you can really get the coverage.
24:37You also brought a shaker decal.
24:39Now, guys, this would be the one that if you had a 70 or 71 e-body with a shaker
24:43hood, this would go on the bottom.
24:45You've seen me apply those several times.
24:46The last couple I've gotten from you, so I know that they're right.
24:49Yeah.
24:49But tell them why that one's right over just a decal that's been cut out of a computer piece of
24:54paper.
24:54Well, again, these are silkscreen printed and they have a UV protectant final coat.
24:58But the big difference is these are printed on a foil backed vinyl.
25:03So they have a rigidity to them that isn't going to be just like a flimpy piece of vinyl when
25:08you peel it.
25:09They drop when you pull the back off.
25:11Correct.
25:11When you peel this off and when you do this on original cars, and I know you've done that on
25:15the show, you can see that silver foil on the backing.
25:18And we've sourced the material and made the decals exactly like they were originally.
25:23One of the crucial things to the authenticity of our products is having all the original blueprints and masters and
25:29new old stock samples of every single product that we produce.
25:32I actually have original blueprints of every graphic that we make, so I know it's 100% original.
25:38We're able to cross reference all the radiuses and measurements, color schemes and so forth.
25:43Have you installed any of your own decals?
25:45I have, yes.
25:45Yeah.
25:46What's the toughest decal to install on a Mopar?
25:48I would say a Daytona bumblebee stripe followed by a billboard.
25:52Yep.
25:53Okay.
25:53All right.
25:54I agree with Mike 100% on this.
25:56They are the most difficult.
25:57The Daytona, it's not just a matter of making sure the trajectory from the quarter panel lines up with the
26:03deck lid.
26:04It is making sure that it lines up with the deck lid, follows the trajectory down the side of the
26:09car, and that the letters, Daytona, go right in the middle.
26:13The middle of the letter should be the middle of the style line.
26:15You get over to the 71 Kudos, they're just as bad.
26:18If you look at the quarter panel decal, it gets wider like that, right?
26:22It starts on the door, might call out 383, and keeps getting wider.
26:26If it's too far forward, it's going to be way too wide.
26:29If it's too far back, you're going to go on your door, drop down half an inch, and there's going
26:33to be the decal for the quarter.
26:34So it's very specific, the location of them.
26:37Then once you've got all that, you have to put on this massive, huge decal without getting any air bubbles
26:43and any dirt in it.
26:45Will and Alyssa failed terribly.
26:48Didn't we pull it off the other way?
26:51Okay, you come on this side.
26:53What are you doing?
26:54How dirty are your hands? Look at that. Did you wash them?
26:56Yes.
26:57Oh, God. Look what you've done. Uh-oh.
27:00What have you done?
27:01We've got problems.
27:01What have you done?
27:03I didn't do anything.
27:04Then how?
27:05I don't know.
27:06Why is this happening?
27:07Lay it back down.
27:08Keep in mind, folks, even though we make these decals perfect, it's up to you to install them correctly.
27:13Yeah.
27:14Thanks, Ricky.
27:15Thank you, brother.
27:16All right.
27:17Well, I've got to go do some work.
27:19All right.
27:28Okay, let's just double-check our dots right here, make sure we're lined up.
27:33Guys, it's going to be a phenomenal color on there. I've never done it.
27:36Fluorescent orange.
27:38Okay, so right there puts me at the bottom of the backing paper.
27:42With your line lined up.
27:43And I've got about three-quarters of an inch overhang.
27:47Yeah.
27:48And that's pretty close to you.
27:49Three-quarters, yep.
27:50And I've got a pretty good center on this door handle.
27:53Okay.
27:54When I first heard about this, I had to go into Mark's office and sit down and say,
27:57Hey man, are you sure about this?
27:59Factory orange stripes on a factory orange car.
28:03I've never seen any like it.
28:05I figured the man had gone insane.
28:07But he got his book out and he actually showed me in his book where the factory orange stripe on
28:12the factory orange car was an option.
28:14And then he got out a picture of the original car that we're actually emulating with this restoration.
28:20Mind blown.
28:21I think we'll go ahead and dope it up.
28:23Okay.
28:24We'll dope the door first here.
28:26I would, just load it all up.
28:27Yep.
28:28It's always best.
28:30So on the 71 Challenger, one thing that will establish the fore and aft, the location of the decals, is
28:37the door handle, the exterior door handle.
28:38Because the decal is actually cut out for it.
28:40So if you put the door exactly in the middle of the cutout for the handle, then you have it
28:47forward and backwards.
28:48The only thing you have is, did you locate it beautifully on the handle, but it went uphill at the
28:54front?
28:55Or did it go downhill?
28:56Because back here, you can't tell it.
28:58But three feet away from you at the end of the door, if it's down an eighth of an inch,
29:01a sixteenth of an inch, you have to follow that trajectory.
29:04So by the time you get to the end of the fender, it'd be really messed up.
29:07Having the door set and established is very, very important.
29:11Now we're going to start squeegeeing.
29:13I see you got a hair in there.
29:15It's probably Mancini's hair.
29:16I'll have to call him and ask him.
29:18Mancini's hair.
29:19Well, that's good ratio of soaps, by the way.
29:24Oh, thank you.
29:25Really coming out nice, moving like it should, not catching air underneath it.
29:30Now the solution we're spraying on here is something Mark's kind of taught me how to mix up.
29:34And, you know, you want to get it slick enough so that the decal has a little bit of movement
29:38and you can get it exactly where you want it.
29:41But not so slick and so soapy that it takes forever for the decal to want to adhere to the
29:46car.
29:46In this case, I think we hit on the exact combination of dish soap and water and it went on
29:51like a dream.
29:55Now that we have the door decal located height-wise and front to rear and level where it's supposed to
30:02go,
30:02we know where to put our quarter panel and our fender.
30:05And those are the next two that we're going to work on.
30:07The easiest things the novices do is they put it on and it seems right.
30:12It seems level. Everything looks great.
30:14They stick it down.
30:15And then when you get down like this and you eyesight, you'll see that this one's actually either going uphill
30:23just a hair or downhill just a hair.
30:25So that's why we don't need marks out here.
30:28We're going to make this a horizontal plane that's perfect.
30:31All the way through.
30:33And where it ends up on the front is where it ends up on the front.
30:36Now, listen, we didn't talk about it in a bit, but you'll notice that on the hood are some photos,
30:40some printed out photos off the computer.
30:42Those are photos that I took of a 1971 Dodge Challenger 383 automatic car.
30:47There was an original paint car when I got it.
30:50Beautiful.
30:51Beautiful meaning that it was very complete and needed to be restored with a very complete numbers matching car.
30:55And when you've got original paint and original decals, measure those.
30:59They may not be perfectly in line with the engineering drawings, but it gives you a great example of what
31:05was accepted at the factory.
31:08Original cars don't lie.
31:10I'm going to set this about where I think the gap is.
31:13Okay, there's our approximate gap.
31:15I think you need to come up just a hair.
31:19Ah, there you go.
31:22To me, that's perfect.
31:27Yep, that's gold.
31:28There you go, brother.
31:29Gold, Jerry.
31:30Gold.
31:30Gold.
31:31This is the very first 1971 Challenger RT decal that I've been able to put on a vehicle since I've
31:37worked here.
31:38In fact, it's probably the coolest decal I've put on any car since I've been here.
31:43Okay, kids at home, little boys and girls in TV land.
31:47Before we can put that quarter panel on, we've got to get both of these end decals laying in place.
31:53Yeah.
31:54So we are going to cut and get these two laid down where they belong so we can close the
31:58door again, then we'll put the quarter on and we'll be done.
32:00Sweetness.
32:01Done, done, and done.
32:04Still to come.
32:05It's time to go on the initial road test.
32:07We are out of time.
32:08We've got to have this car on the trailer tomorrow morning at 7 o'clock.
32:13There's parts of the decal installation that you really have to take your time on.
32:18This car represents the epitome of that era, the wildest colors, the wildest options.
32:25These things are beasts.
32:26This car went every which way but loose.
32:34There's parts of the decal installation that you can absolutely breeze through.
32:39And there's other parts of the installation that you really have to take your time on.
32:43The way this decal is designed, it actually gets wider as it goes back towards the quarter panel.
32:49We've got our door decal in place and we've got our fender decal in place.
32:53So how far forward or backwards this decal goes will determine whether or not it's actually going to line up
33:00with the door.
33:00This looks good.
33:01Okay, we've got all of our lines here, so we're going to take it off.
33:04Yeah, and we'll see how much we have left over hanging if we need to trim it at all.
33:09Not bad.
33:10That's pretty good.
33:11I would stick it.
33:12Lick it and stick it.
33:12Lick it and stick it.
33:14Alright.
33:23Nice overhang.
33:24Yeah, you're going to have to play with it forward and backwards maybe.
33:27But not much.
33:28I mean, boy it's right there.
33:30Yeah, it's got a nice swoosh up.
33:32I call it a swoosh.
33:41Okay, we've got these laid out.
33:43We'll let that set for a couple minutes.
33:44Pull the backing paper off and see what kind of damage we've done.
33:49Okay, we'll let that set.
33:51Take five.
33:52With the decals all laid out, wrapped around the corners and just literally drying, evaporating out so that we pull
33:58the backing paper off.
33:59We're going to start on the passenger side of the car.
34:03Once we had the driver's side all done and installed and Mark signed off on it, I went ahead and
34:08grabbed Dylan for an extra set of hands.
34:09And we went ahead and installed the passenger side decals.
34:12This is great education for him.
34:14I need the extra hands.
34:16He needs the education.
34:17It's a win-win situation.
34:44It's a win-win situation.
34:47The semi-orange with the fluorescent orange stripes, the black interior, the window louvers.
34:52That car is stunning.
34:54This car represents the epitome of that era.
34:59The wildest colors, the wildest options, wildest graphics all come together on this 1971 Challenger Tribute car.
35:07Just remember, guys, as you're looking at it in all of its glory and all of its beauty, that car
35:12was a green-on-green 73 Challenger 318 automatic car just a few years ago.
35:18And now it has transformed into an absolute masterpiece.
35:24Now I have all my bragging out of the way for how the car turned out.
35:27It's time to go on the initial road test, what we call a shakedown.
35:33All right, so we're finally at a point where we're going to road test our 1971 Challenger.
35:37We've ran it inside the shop.
35:39We actually took it down and had an alignment done on it, but we used the tow truck to roll
35:42it down there and back.
35:43If everything goes good in this drive and everything is working like it should and there's no squeaks, leaks or
35:47rattles, something weird like that,
35:48then I'm going to get the camera team and we're going to go out on the road, get some really
35:52nice driving footage.
35:53Now, something really cool about this car is the owner wanted a Dakota Digital Dash.
35:59It's a replica of the original Raleigh instrument cluster, but it's all digital.
36:05And is it cool?
36:06This thing, I did not realize how much research they went into this, but it fits perfectly.
36:12This thing looks, function, and for the most part appears at a glance as an original A46 Raleigh instrument cluster.
36:20But it's a Dakota Digital and it works with the key, it comes on, goes off with the key.
36:25When we turn the lights out in the house, you see how bright those gauges are.
36:30You could see those things at night, which one of the problems that we run into many times with these
36:34cars is they're still a little dim at night.
36:36Not this one. This looks like a brand new car would look.
36:39So just big props to Dakota Digital for a phenomenal product that, again, is right in the spirit of Mopar.
36:44It just isn't an original part.
36:47Let's just give that a fire up.
36:49We also, to point out, put in a 240 kilometer per hour, which was an option on cars that were
36:55getting exported overseas or to Canada.
36:57They had a kilometer speedometer.
36:59We put that one in this car.
37:00That car started up nice.
37:03I ran it many times inside.
37:05We have no lights on.
37:06This part of the Dakota dash is it'll tell you engine failure code.
37:10We got nothing.
37:11So right now we've got a half tank of fuel.
37:14The car's warmed up.
37:16Great oil pressure.
37:18Clock is working.
37:19Tac is working.
37:21Let's go drive this thing.
37:22That clutch feels nice.
37:23This is a hydraulic clutch.
37:28Feels fantastic.
37:29Okay, we're gonna take a left here.
37:35Now this has got the Magnum Force power rack and pinion coil over front suspension.
37:42Nice shift.
37:44Tracking good.
37:46Now that feels good.
37:47Okay, the power steering feels nice.
37:49These are a lot firmer than the power steering you would have on an old integral system.
37:54A lot of times, remember those as a kid, you could drive those cars with one finger.
37:57You can't.
37:58Well, you could, but you must have a pretty strong finger.
38:00Now notice when I'm moving that steering wheel and I'm giving it just a little bit of a turn,
38:03that thing's like it's on rails.
38:06It's following the road.
38:07It's following directly in proportion to what I'm doing.
38:11Go back to the 1966 Hemi Charger when I was doing a half of a turn both ways,
38:15and the car was tracking straight down the road.
38:17That was the old integral system.
38:18It wasn't worn out.
38:19It's just that's the old integral system.
38:21There's a lot of components to it that make that up.
38:23The rack and pinion is tight and fast and reactive.
38:26Plus it's power, so that helps.
38:29So far, I'm not hearing any rattles and the engine sounds good.
38:36Boy, that's peppy.
38:37These things are beasts.
38:42Second gear feels fantastic.
38:44Boy, it's a crazy world when you start mixing these things together.
38:48New and old age.
38:48You got that old age, super awesome look that's just timeless, but you got today's modern technology.
38:54See, and I try to tell people, you notice right now you can't see any of this stuff,
38:58but I'm actually doing probably 45 miles an hour.
39:01I'm in third gear and it's idling.
39:03I can't do anything with it.
39:04You'll never need a six speed with this car.
39:07These cars aren't meant to go 200 miles an hour where you need six gear.
39:10If you're building one, put a five speed in it.
39:12That's my advice.
39:13You have to cut up a lot less of the floor.
39:15It just leaves it a lot more solid for drivability and stability if you put a five speed in it.
39:21The vintage air is blowing ice cold right now, which is good because it's about 80 degrees out.
39:35That feels good, folks.
39:38All right.
39:39Boy, that's a nice drive.
39:41We are out of time.
39:41We've got to have this car on the trailer tomorrow morning at seven o'clock.
39:46So that means that as soon as I get back to the shop,
39:48I'm going to grab the rest of the camera team, the audio people,
39:51and we're going to go out and do some really cool driving footage with it.
39:55Very nice.
39:55Boy, it downshifts nice, handles nice.
39:58I'm not getting any clunks, no vibrations, not getting any resonating inside the car.
40:02The mufflers, the entire system that we put on this car,
40:05we got it from Magnaflow and what a nice system.
40:09All bolted in, had all the different pieces that we needed for it for the saddle.
40:14I think they call them saddle clamps.
40:17Everything came, and it is a beautiful system that bolted right in.
40:20It's just important because the mufflers that you put on and the system that you put on
40:25can't restrict all the horsepower.
40:26You just put a 700-horse engine in, you put the wrong mufflers, wrong pipes,
40:29and now you're only going to get 500 out because you've throttled it down.
40:32So make the right call to the right people.
40:33And I am officially back at the shop where I am going to round up everybody,
40:39and we have the rest of the afternoon to film, and then it goes away.
40:42That also means we have to come in late tonight and buff and polish the car.
40:46Beautiful job. Fantastic.
40:56Look at that little beauty going down the road.
40:58This is so cool.
40:59When was the last time you saw a 1971 Dodge Challenger RT EV2 fluorescent orange stripes on a houndstooth interior
41:07loaded with a 707 horsepower engine and a six-speed manual transmission?
41:12The survey is none. You haven't seen it.
41:14Just imagine that's your custom car. GraveyardMotors.com
41:21One of the things I put up with quite a bit in social media is how we just baby our
41:25cars.
41:25So starting this season, I put these cars through the paces.
41:30Go back and you look at our Hemi Cuda.
41:31I did launch burnouts with that thing.
41:33If something's going to bust, it's going to bust right then.
41:39This car I even pushed harder.
41:41But it's not hard to push a 707 horsepower car.
41:45You hit the gas and it goes.
41:49This car went every which way but loose.
42:07Okay guys, well that is it. I hope you enjoyed the show.
42:09This is our season finale.
42:11Be sure and go over to our Graveyard Cars YouTube channel.
42:14You're going to watch some of your favorite old episodes but we're creating new content over there as well.
42:19New episodes visible in a lot of places.
42:21It'll be streaming on a lot of devices.
42:23So thank you everybody, everybody at home for watching our show for 15 years.
42:29We are the longest running show on the network.
42:33When we started out, I was told there's no way a show about one line of car is going to
42:39take off.
42:40It's got no legs.
42:41Well, it did have legs.
42:4315 years worth of legs.
42:46Primetime, over 250 episodes.
42:49Nobody did that.
42:51We did that.
42:51We did that because of you guys at home watching Graveyard Cars.
42:54You've really made Graveyard Cars what it is today.
42:57We hope to continue making stuff for the next 20 years as long as I'm vertical.
43:02Maybe after I die I can even make some episodes.
43:05There's a lot of stuff that hit the cutting room floor that you don't want to see spray painted on
43:09an overpass.
43:10Trust me.
43:11Tiny is that?
43:12That's accurate.
43:13That's accurate.
43:14Thanks guys.
43:27Thanks.
43:28Thanks.
