00:00Seven years ago, I promised your mother
00:02that I'd build her a greenhouse, 120 feet long.
00:05Are you crazy?
00:06It's going to be epic.
00:07It's about right here.
00:10It's an off-grid, botanical, organic greenhouse.
00:15Nine planters cut out of propane tanks.
00:18It always has to be capsized, huh?
00:21Think how many tomatoes we can grow.
00:2360,000 pounds of concrete.
00:26When you pour concrete, it gets everywhere.
00:30What do you think, kiddo?
00:32That is big.
00:34I want to get polycarbonate started today.
00:37Solar-powered greenhouse.
00:38Three, two, one.
00:40Hydraulic glass ore.
00:41Wow!
00:45My given name is Jared Capp.
00:49But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:51This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:53Everyone, Claire, I've been a professional builder
00:56for over 15 years.
00:58Woo-hoo!
00:59But I've recently teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
01:01Whoa.
01:02It looks so good in here.
01:04We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:07Whoa!
01:09Awake now!
01:10What if we did use a plane?
01:11Wait, really?
01:12All right, Alex, she's all yours.
01:15Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:17This is no she shed.
01:18This has turned into a she palace.
01:21Oh, my God.
01:22And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:25Love you, man.
01:26I love you.
01:27That is so beautiful.
01:28Oh, my God.
01:29Look it, look it, look it.
01:30But the best part...
01:31...is we get to do it together.
01:34Anyone who knows me knows that nothing is more important to me than family.
01:52Oh, my goodness.
01:54It's the reason I love doing what I do.
01:55Do you see that over there?
01:56Whoa.
01:57Oh, wow.
01:58Building unconventional things for the folks here in South Dakota.
02:00Seriously?
02:01That is so beautiful.
02:02Oh, my gosh.
02:03Did you see what Daddy did?
02:04And the people I love more than anything else?
02:05That's my family.
02:06My stepdaughter, Alex, and my wife, Rachel.
02:07Rachel and I actually met on a project almost 10 years ago.
02:09She went from being a client to a friend to the love of my life.
02:14I proposed to Rachel just right over there on that rock.
02:16And we come up here at night sometimes and sit and watch the sunset.
02:19Every time I come to our property here at Shortgrass, it reminds me of a promise I made a long time ago.
02:24And the people I love more than anything else, that's my family.
02:27My stepdaughter, Alex, and my wife, Rachel.
02:29Rachel and I actually met on a project almost 10 years ago.
02:31She went from being a client to a friend to the love of my life.
02:34I proposed to Rachel just right over there on that rock.
02:37And we come up here at night sometimes and sit and watch the sunset.
02:41It reminds me of a promise I made a long time ago.
02:48And as usual, I'll need Sprout's help to pull it off.
02:51She's meeting me here to hear my very special pitch.
02:56I wanted to show you something that I've been chewing on for a hot minute.
02:59So I don't know if you know this.
03:01Seven years ago, I promised your mother something.
03:04This was before we were married.
03:06That I'd build her a greenhouse.
03:09Okay.
03:10I've built a lot of greenhouses.
03:12They're really popular here in South Dakota for a couple reasons.
03:15They protect plants from extreme summer heat, as well as extend the growing season in the cold winter months.
03:20But this one is unlike anything anyone's ever built before.
03:25Your mom, she's always, always wanted one.
03:28Every time we travel, she visits greenhouses and the botanical gardens that she likes.
03:32Nature and growing things is a lifelong passion for mom.
03:35I want this to be not only a sanctuary for her, but to fulfill that passion.
03:41And I want to go big on this one, kid.
03:43I want to start near the old outhouse, 120 feet long.
03:52Are you crazy?
03:5320 feet deep.
03:54And I want a bermed greenhouse.
03:56All right.
03:57I'm out.
03:58No, no.
03:59You got to help me.
04:00120?
04:01120 feet.
04:02Do you know how big 120 is?
04:04I do.
04:05No, like in real life.
04:07I'll show you.
04:09Walk up just this side of the outhouse.
04:11Okay.
04:12Okay.
04:13It's about right here.
04:24This is giant.
04:25It's pretty big.
04:26I could feed the entire city of spearfish in this thing.
04:31It always has to be capsized, huh?
04:34Think how many tomatoes we can grow for you.
04:36Tomatoes?
04:37I could grow a whole forest in this thing.
04:40It's going to be epic.
04:41It's because obviously we have to cut down into the hill and excavate it out.
04:44Okay.
04:45And we'll build it embedded into the hillside so the earth can help warm it in the winter.
04:49But it's also going to be heated with our well water.
04:51So we'll have a geothermal heat loop that goes through the greenhouse to keep it at an even temperature all year.
04:57Okay.
04:5820 feet of it, the start of it, will be what I call an airlock.
05:01Mm-hmm.
05:02This is the airlock.
05:04Okay.
05:05You'll come in here and there'll be big planter beds down the middle.
05:09Okay.
05:10Does mom know that we're building this right now?
05:13She does not.
05:14And I know what you're going to ask.
05:16Uh-huh.
05:17How are we hiding this from mother?
05:18Yes.
05:19I don't think there's any way we can hide the construction of a 2,000 square foot building from her.
05:24No.
05:25That's impossible.
05:26Yeah.
05:27But what we can hide is all the stuff on the inside.
05:28Right.
05:29All the details, the things that you and I do.
05:31What are the light fixtures?
05:32What do these beds look like?
05:33What plants did we put in?
05:35But it's still 120.
05:36It is big.
05:37It's huge.
05:38I admit.
05:39But I just, I want it to be, I want it to be a promise that I kept for her.
05:47Um, yeah.
05:48She works so hard and she deserves it.
05:50I don't want to build it for her.
05:53Okay.
05:54Yeah.
05:55Okay.
05:56Okay.
05:57All right.
05:58Enough of that.
05:59Enough of that.
06:00In the air.
06:03What do you think?
06:04I'll do it.
06:05Do it?
06:06Sweet.
06:07You're lucky that you have me.
06:09I'm super lucky I have you.
06:11I know this.
06:24I work up the blueprints and sprout noodles on the details of how to make the greenhouse perfect
06:29for Rachel.
06:30And then we reconvene over coffee.
06:32Be proud of me, kid.
06:33I actually have a blueprint for you.
06:34I'm so proud.
06:36You never draw up blueprints.
06:39You must be serious about this greenhouse.
06:41I have the footprint that we talked about drawn up.
06:44One of the things I think is important is this spot is going to be for mechanical stuff,
06:48some of the solar batteries and things like that.
06:50This will be an off-grid greenhouse.
06:52I'd like to put solar panels out on the east side facing south.
06:55Other than that, it's a pretty blank canvas.
06:57Mm-hmm.
06:58I do want it to be a designated space for her, so we should make it in her design style.
07:04Industrial, steampunk, Edwardian, stuff like that.
07:07What does that mean?
07:08Edwardian.
07:09It's post-Victorian.
07:11Okay.
07:12I have something for you.
07:14I'll grab it.
07:15Well, Victorian, I know what that means.
07:18Edward, is he a vampire?
07:20I don't know.
07:21Okay.
07:22Edwardian.
07:23When did you make this?
07:26This is how I spend my Friday nights.
07:28Most teenagers go out and party.
07:30I build a tri-fold poster on a greenhouse.
07:33Yeah, that stare is rad.
07:35Mm-hmm.
07:36I picked out some of these from Mom's favorite greenhouses that we've actually seen,
07:41and then here's just some inspiration for some flowers that she might like.
07:44Oh, man, that thing's beautiful.
07:46What do we think about, like, a water feature somewhere in here?
07:49Either a fountain or, like, a pond.
07:51Something that is a bit more of a rustic feel, like, steampunky.
07:56And the nice thing about it is you can grow water plants, which is cool, but you can also
07:59use that water to water the plants.
08:02And maybe we can use that same steampunk look for the planters.
08:06Definitely don't want to do a boring, traditional planter.
08:08Yeah, I think we might have to go on a field trip with Mom where we go and pick out plants
08:13together because as much as I would like to keep the majority of this a surprise for her,
08:18she should also have a say in this bit especially.
08:22To make this the greenhouse of Rachel's dreams, we're going big, more than 2,000 square feet.
08:29The build will be divided into two sections, an airlock entrance, which will house equipment
08:34and work as a mudroom in the actual greenhouse.
08:37The greenhouse itself will be a sanctuary filled with fruit trees and flowers.
08:42It'll have a unique water feature, a space to dine in or chill out, and it'll be solar powered
08:48and geothermally heated to keep it warm all year long.
08:52The size of this thing is by far the biggest challenge, and I'm hoping we can pull it off
08:57before winter and give Rachel the happy place she deserves.
09:02This is a big project.
09:04Yeah.
09:05Is this our biggest project to date?
09:07This is the biggest one you and I have ever worked on together.
09:09That's crazy.
09:10You work on all the cool, pretty things.
09:11I'll work on all the mechanical stuff, and I'll start getting subs lined up.
09:14Okay.
09:15All right, kiddo.
09:16Okay.
09:17Love you.
09:18Love you.
09:19We have big plans for a big greenhouse.
09:26Now we need to break a lot of ground.
09:28Luckily, my guy Tanner works for an excavation company.
09:32He's the first of what will be many I know a guy calls.
09:37Tanner can literally do this job five times faster than I can.
09:42That machine, one scoop is worth five scoops of my small excavator.
09:47In between loads, I jump in the skid steer, and I can move all this stuff over next to
09:52his big machine so he can keep moving.
09:55The name of the game is never let Tanner slow down.
09:59The next step is to lay the foundation.
10:04That's going to happen in stages.
10:06But before pouring any mud, we need to build the forms for the footers that will support
10:11the walls.
10:16Our first load of concrete and the pump truck are on their way.
10:21It'll be close, but our forms will be ready.
10:31The footers are just that.
10:32They're literally the base for the walls.
10:34And these footers alone are 17 cubic yards of concrete.
10:3760 plus thousand pounds.
10:39And that's more than a humpback whale weighs.
10:44Our footers extend into cuts that we've made in the hillside behind the greenhouse to brace
10:49the concrete wall against the soil.
10:51We have the start of the foundation.
10:53This is going to be a massive, beautiful greenhouse.
10:56The love of my life.
11:05Sprout just finished up school, so she's on her way out to short grass.
11:08She said she couldn't wait to see the build.
11:11Well, how are you?
11:16This looks amazing.
11:17Dude, how fun is this, yeah?
11:19This is a capsized greenhouse.
11:20That is for sure.
11:21I'd give you a hard time about capsizing things, but this is a good capsize.
11:25Dude.
11:27Oh, give me a second real quick.
11:28This is the voice.
11:29Okay.
11:30Hello, sir.
11:31Yeah.
11:32Yeah.
11:33Sorry, Cap.
11:35He hates when people mark up wet concrete.
11:38I'm not an advocate whatsoever of stamping things in concrete.
11:42Stamps?
11:43Yes.
11:44Initials?
11:45No.
11:46Don't do it.
11:47But come on.
11:48He's got to make an exception this time.
11:51R for Rachel.
11:53Love you, Mom.
11:54Once the base cures, we'll put up the forms for the next stage.
12:03More footings and sidewalls.
12:05We'll end up pumping about a half a million pounds of concrete.
12:09But it doesn't matter how many humpback whales worth of mud we have to pour.
12:13I'm keeping my promise and building Rachel her dream greenhouse.
12:26One of the things Sprout and I decided there needed to be some sort of water feature.
12:30Ultimately, I want a place to grow water plants in.
12:33I want a place to maybe have some little fish.
12:36Up in the boneyard is a rail car of some sort.
12:41I'm going to make a little fake set of railroad tracks in the back corner of the greenhouse.
12:46We're going to set this on there.
12:47And then we're going to do a steampunk water feature.
12:50It's always a happy thing for me when I get to use some of my scrap.
12:54Especially for a project for someone I love.
13:06I brought the talent handler with me because I know exactly where this thing is.
13:09This is going to be our water feature inside the greenhouse.
13:13It's overbuilt for sure.
13:15Someone else capsized this long before me.
13:21This is my plan.
13:22I'm going to get all this scrap dumped out on the ground.
13:24Take the telehandler, boom, pick this thing up.
13:26Get it back over into the yard where I can work on it.
13:28Clean it up and get it ready for its new life.
13:31I'm not sure what this was, but I know it came out of the gold mine because of the small gauge wheels they used to run the ore cars on.
13:40Just south of us in Leeds is Homestake Gold Mine.
13:44It opened about a decade after the Civil War and went on to become the largest gold mine in the Western Hemisphere.
13:51Until it stopped production in 2001.
13:53Doesn't get any more steampunk than that.
13:59Maintaining a plant friendly climate inside is crucial.
14:02It's especially important here in South Dakota where summers are short and the winters can hit really hard.
14:08And that's what these tubes are for.
14:11This is to convey air.
14:13The fan will push air from the hottest part of the greenhouse down through the tubing and out of one of the coldest parts of the greenhouse.
14:21And that's a way to do two things.
14:23It's to circulate the air, but it also uses the soil as a thermal battery to store that heat in the colder months.
14:32After this step, we're going to fill this whole thing up to level.
14:35All the air tubes and everything will be underground and we'll be ready to build a structure on top of it.
14:40We pile the topsoil two feet deep to cover all the air tubes.
14:55But it isn't just dirt, it's nutrient rich soil.
14:59Rich will be able to grow things right in the ground as well as in the planters.
15:03We're filling our foundation with topsoil.
15:06So right now it's a lot easier because we have our big equipment and it's easy for us to just dump it.
15:11But once we have the greenhouse on there, if we don't have our soil in, then we'd have to haul it all by hand.
15:19Tons of concrete later, the last wall is going up.
15:23This is so exciting for me.
15:26All the hard work, all the planning, the promise from 10 years ago to Rachel.
15:31It's happening. It's all happening right now.
15:36Now we actually have to start building the walls of the greenhouse.
15:52It's going to be a good day. Big changes today.
15:54This is going to be all our studs.
15:56We've got headers for this big door that we're putting in.
15:59And then we're going to start banging this thing out.
16:01I've got another crew of guys ready to help me start framing up the walls.
16:08Many hands make light work.
16:10Gosh, I love it when a plan comes together.
16:16The Boneyard Bonanza continues as I head up to the south side of Shortgrass to retrieve another relic for our steampunk water feature.
16:37These have been sitting here for a little while.
16:40I got these a long time ago.
16:43They're two giant gears I got from a scrapyard in Rapid City.
16:46In Rachel's greenhouse, I'm going to do a huge steampunk art piece on the wall for her.
16:51These gears are going to be a perfect way to frame that out.
16:54They're covered in grease, so we're going to get that cleaned up.
16:58Get them shined up and ready for their new life.
17:04And so far, this is a lot harder than I expected.
17:17Yesterday, we started tracking down some of the interior pieces for Rachel's dream greenhouse.
17:22Today, we'll start making them look pretty.
17:28These thousand-gallon steel propane tanks need to be cut down to size.
17:33We're going to take the plasma cutter, and we're going to start cutting these into 36-inch slices.
17:39Not only are they durable, but they'll act as a thermal battery, so when the sun hits this tank, it actually absorbs the heat.
17:46And as at night, we want that heat to dissipate slowly in the greenhouse.
17:53Ow.
18:00That's sick!
18:03As Ruby and Dustin are cutting down the tanks, I have some problem-solving to do to get my big gear cleaned up.
18:11I'm scraping all of this old grease off of this giant gear set.
18:15We tried with the power washer at first, but it wouldn't move it, even at like 200-degree hot water.
18:20Then I figured out if I added fire to it, the grease is so old, it sort of turns it into powder.
18:27Then we're going to come back to the power washer.
18:29This has turned into a lot bigger job than I thought it was going to be.
18:33And to do away with any residual propane, the tank planters get fire treated, too.
18:46Sort of a post-apocalyptic kind of day here at the job site.
18:50With the planters and the gear getting sorted out, it's back to the greenhouse and the airlock.
19:02The total length of our building is 120 feet.
19:05This first hundred feet is the actual greenhouse.
19:09This is the planted space.
19:11The brains of the greenhouse is what we call the airlock.
19:14So that is the part that you enter the greenhouse from, but we decided to put in-floor heat in it.
19:20Shortgrass has an artesian well that comes out of the ground at 71 degrees.
19:24It goes through the thousand feet of pipe and then through our concrete floor.
19:28The water comes out of that floor, flows back through the greenhouse, and that's what we use to water the plants and the planter beds and all the trees and stuff.
19:38The next step for us is to put four inches of concrete over this entire thing.
19:43I can't even tell you how excited I am about this.
19:47No matter how hard you try, when you pour concrete, it gets everywhere.
19:52Before the concrete cures, we'll stamp it to make it a little extra special for Rachel.
19:58Then it's time to get working on the interior.
20:09While Cappy's at Shortgrass, I'm at the nursery with my mom to brainstorm plants for her dream greenhouse and sneak in some quality time.
20:17Oh look, I like the moss and that kind of small plant that's like in the back.
20:22Oh look, that fish is staring at you.
20:25These do not look real.
20:28It's like furry.
20:29You know what they make me think of is those underwater plants in some aquariums?
20:32Yeah, and they like...
20:34And they wave.
20:37Man, these are fun.
20:38Does this kind of stuff fit the vision you had for the greenhouse?
20:42Cappy always imagines that the greenhouse is going to be a production greenhouse, like vegetables and things like that.
20:49Like, I want a botanical greenhouse.
20:51Mm-hmm.
20:53I've been talking to Cappy about having my own greenhouse for a really long time.
20:58I've gone to greenhouses everywhere I go.
21:00I love botanical greenhouses, so I'm happy every time I go in a greenhouse.
21:04Leaving the nursery, I get why my mom loves being around plants so much.
21:08And I've got some great ideas for her greenhouse.
21:20We're making amazing progress.
21:22The framers have been working to get all the walls up.
21:25We're ready to fly rafters today.
21:27But before we do that, there's some big elements that have to go in the greenhouse.
21:31Our propane tank planters, the freshly sandblasted rail car, and the one I'm most nervous about.
21:35The main component of the steampunk piece is this giant gear, 10 foot in diameter.
21:41So I have to raise this up and over the wall and set it down, but it probably weighs 6,000, 7,000 pounds.
21:47I hope we never have to take them out.
21:51Dustin and my buddy Timbo are giving me a hand with the big lifts today, starting with the gear.
21:57It is one big, heavy brute, so we're going to pick it with a husky chain.
22:02Okay, I'm going to come up a little bit.
22:03The gear is right at the telehandler's limit.
22:06To start, I'll just see if we can get it upright.
22:09Just don't be on the downhill side of it.
22:16Yeah, you and Timbo, guide it.
22:18I'm moving.
22:20We're off to a good start.
22:22The tele managed to lift the big gear upright.
22:24Now the hard part.
22:26Once I've started extending the boom, it's the dangerous balancing act.
22:30One careless move, or if I move too fast, the telehandler could easily tip over.
22:35Have Timbo hold it. He can hand it off to you.
22:38Ah, yeah.
22:48Okay.
22:50Just real easy.
22:52He's going to want to spin.
22:53Okay, so far so good.
22:57But the gear is just clearing the front wall.
23:00Okay, I'm driving forward.
23:02There's no points for speed, ever.
23:05Coming down.
23:07I know what the crane operators feel like, because I can't see them.
23:11I can see the top of their heads.
23:15I have to move it forward and down at the same time, because I don't want it too high, because that's what will tip me.
23:21Just up, forward, up, down, up, down.
23:25We're setting it down right behind the tracks Dustin built for the rail car.
23:31We're touching.
23:32Woo.
23:33Wow.
23:41That looks awesome.
23:44It's so tall, dude.
23:46It's so big.
23:48Dude, it looks amazing, you guys.
23:51I'm so excited to see it in its place.
23:53Now we're going to bolt it to the wall and make some steampunk.
24:02And with the big gear planted in place, it's time to plant some planters.
24:09We get to fly all of our propane tank steampunk planters into our greenhouse.
24:17Right now it looks big and open and empty.
24:20In a year's time, there'll be trees that are up to the ceiling that are 14 feet tall.
24:24There'll be bushes.
24:25There'll be tomato plants.
24:26So you have to accommodate for the amount of space you need for the future of the greenhouse, not just today.
24:33With the final planter in place, it's time to fly in the rafters.
24:37We're cutting what we call bird's mouth notches into each end of the rafter to ensure a tight fit on the angled roof.
24:44And it's so satisfying when they drop into place.
24:51While the guys place the rafters from the left, I'll fly in the sandblasted rail car on the right.
24:57Talk about multitasking.
25:01This is the last big thing that has to go in before we can seal up the roof.
25:09Touchdown!
25:10And with the rafters all up, it's window time.
25:16We're gonna have nine down the front side, nine down the back side lined up with each other.
25:21We're taping all the window frames to make them waterproof.
25:24I'm super excited to get these windows put in.
25:29So there's a bunch of different styles of windows you can choose.
25:33We decided to use awning windows in the greenhouse.
25:35That means the hinges on the top and they open from the bottom like that.
25:39We want air to be sucked in from the bottom underneath and exit out the top set of windows.
25:45This beauty is one step closer to being done and one step closer to being weathertight as well.
25:51It's a good thing because winter's coming.
25:53David and Dustin are already prepping to install the polycarbonate panels that seal up the greenhouse.
26:07It's a good time to get Sprout up to speed on the build.
26:10What do you think, kiddo?
26:13Whoa, that is...
26:15Big.
26:17Do you want to see it inside?
26:18Yes.
26:20Here is the airlock portion.
26:22Yeah.
26:23I've been thinking of an effective way that we could use this as sort of a loading dock without taking up too much space inside.
26:29So check this out.
26:30This is a big 10 foot by 10 foot hydraulic glass door.
26:35That's cool.
26:36It's going to be super cool.
26:38Here's all the planters.
26:39And down at the end, the rail car and the big gear.
26:42It looks so cool.
26:44Yeah, it's a little bigger than...
26:46A little.
26:48That's going to be the framework for the steampunk piece.
26:51And then this is your tank.
26:54We sandblasted it down.
26:56So you can see it's starting to rust up a little bit.
26:58Yeah.
26:59But I have an idea how to control the rust by making this a floral steampunk thing.
27:05Okay.
27:06Do some impressions of some leaves and things like that.
27:07And it would be so much fun if we had like some vines that were like up both sides.
27:12Yeah, like some trumpet vine or wisteria or something.
27:14Yeah, yeah.
27:15That would be cool.
27:16I never thought about climbing stuff.
27:17Should we do some work?
27:18Okay.
27:19Yes.
27:20Polycarbonate started today.
27:21Okay.
27:22If we want to keep everything inside dry, we've got to get a roof over our head.
27:29Well, in true South Dakota fashion, the weather is starting to turn on us.
27:32We need to race to install the roof panels today.
27:39The modern choice for the greenhouse is a polycarbonate product.
27:42It's a lightweight but very durable plastic that insulates well and offers plenty of UV protection.
27:48It's perfect for growing stuff.
27:50And yes, it stands up to the elements, even the snow.
27:55Assembly line style is what we're doing.
27:57So we've got a table set up and what these are is a two-part channel system.
28:01So you have this bottom channel.
28:03There's a gasket that lines on both sides and then you have a top piece that snaps into that.
28:09And that all gets sort of ice cream sandwiched together.
28:12And that's what actually seals the polycarbonate from the weather.
28:15And we've got weather in South Dakota.
28:18The wind's really starting to pick up.
28:20Winter is definitely blowing into the Black Hills.
28:23We're running out of daylight and a cold front is moving in.
28:35We need to get this roof over our heads.
28:38Okay, David, you good?
28:39Good.
28:40The first piece is always the hardest piece to put on.
28:43So all these components have to go on correctly and perfectly.
28:46Perfect layout, perfect placement.
28:48Okay.
28:50I got three more inches.
28:52Because if you don't do it right the first time and it leaks,
28:55you have to go back and tear it all apart and redo it.
28:58Right there.
29:00I like that if you guys like that.
29:01Yeah.
29:07Seems like every time we try to fly something overhead,
29:10the universe knows it and they make it windy.
29:12We got weather coming, so we're gonna get this done.
29:14One down, 24 to go.
29:16It's so much more.
29:17Well, just like that, it went all South Dakota on us.
29:34We knew the weather was coming in.
29:38We worked late to get all the polycarbonate on,
29:40so we are in the dry.
29:42With the snow melting and the roof over our heads,
29:47we can comfortably turn our attention to the interior of the greenhouse,
29:52starting with our planters.
29:55We've got all the planter beds set.
29:58And the next step for us is to start these hugelkultur beds.
30:02And what these are is sort of a way to use wood and decaying organic matter to build up the base of a bed.
30:10Dustin yesterday cut up a bunch of older firewood that we had.
30:14And we're gonna fill about two-thirds of this bed with.
30:17Then we're gonna top it with straw and a bunch of shredded paper.
30:21That lets worms, bacteria, beneficial soil things happen underneath that.
30:27And as it decomposes, it settles.
30:29And then you just dress the top of it with compost or more soil throughout the years.
30:34Each one of these planter beds has an individual irrigation line.
30:38The reason we did that is every plant is different, right?
30:41If it's potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, they all require different amounts of water.
30:46So this way we'll be able to mechanically control what bed gets what water requirements.
30:51And there'll be a similar system down the back when we plant all the fruit trees.
30:55Oh, there's some good manure.
30:57Woo!
31:01Seemed like a good idea at the time.
31:06Now that the plants have some homes to grow in,
31:09we still have to make sure that the greenhouse retains the heat.
31:12So we'll apply a heavy layer of spray foam insulation
31:15then it's time to pick up our siding for the interior of the greenhouse.
31:20Today, we're putting up all of our wall board that we have.
31:24So this is in replacement of sheet rock.
31:27This is really, really cool.
31:28This is a tongue and groove setup.
31:30It's super durable.
31:31And we're gonna get this party started.
31:33It's a beautiful day for it.
31:41The kid just got here.
31:42She got done with all her homework early.
31:44So she jumped right in and she's gonna help us sling up some wall boards.
31:50This slat wall has little arms that stick in here.
31:53Yeah.
31:54And make shelves and baskets and hooks for hoses and coats and all this stuff.
31:57So it's like a peg wall, just.
31:58A peg wall, yep.
31:59Except you can put it anywhere you want, which is cooler.
32:01I love how clean it looks.
32:02It does look really nice.
32:03Yep, mama's gonna like this.
32:05Once the paneling is installed inside, we can focus on the siding outside.
32:10One of the things we wanted to do was one of a kind siding.
32:14We had a pallet of sheet steel that was left over from another project.
32:17What we'll do is we'll spray them with apple cider vinegar, make this rust in a completely one of a kind pattern.
32:23You couldn't duplicate this if you tried.
32:26Completely hail proof.
32:28It goes on pretty fast.
32:30Cappy texted me earlier this morning to meet him at the greenhouse to work on our steampunk water feature.
32:39Aunt Ren has been helping us out by giving the real car a unique look, using some leaves and apple cider vinegar to accelerate the rusting.
32:47That looks so good.
32:52I didn't even like.
32:54Hi kid.
32:59What are you doing?
33:04I was waiting to scare you.
33:06It looks like a coffin.
33:07It's very sarcophagacy looking, isn't it?
33:10Alright, let's get to work.
33:12Sprout and I are building out this steampunk feature, starting with what was an old aircraft oxygen tank I found in the barn.
33:21And Alex has some copper tubing that she'll be adding to the piece.
33:25One thing's for sure, like the rest of this build, will be one of a kind.
33:29So I'm always excited when I get packages in the mail.
33:45I'm even more excited when there's solar panels.
33:51We've got our rack set up, got all the wires pulled, everything's ready to go.
33:55Now we start stacking the panels.
34:00We pulled these wires through 120 feet of conduit, all the way up to inside this box.
34:07So this inverter is what changes the direct current, or the DC voltage, to AC voltage, which is what your household runs on.
34:14We turn the switch on the side, that lets power from the array to come in.
34:18Solar powered greenhouse.
34:22Alright, you're feeling good?
34:24I am.
34:25Three.
34:26Two.
34:27One.
34:28Perfect.
34:29I shouldn't have looked right at him.
34:41The crew is here to install our door.
34:43It's more like a huge window.
34:45This baby will save space and better yet give Rachel a grand view of the Black Hills she loves so much.
34:54The door Sprout and I decided on is 10 by 10.
34:57It weighs almost a thousand pounds and is a hydraulically operated hanger style door.
35:03Super excited about getting this one installed.
35:05With that in, we're ready for the finishing touches and we'll be able to reveal this dream greenhouse to mom.
35:15Today is the big day, 10 years of love and planning and dreaming and we're just moments away from gifting my wife Rachel the greenhouse she's only ever dreamed of having.
35:28Ooh, the llamas. I like it.
35:29I'm not sure why mom likes it so much.
35:30Because you painted it goofball.
35:31Well, when I was like seven.
35:32Those are the best.
35:33I'm surprised she didn't say anything when we swiped it.
35:34I know.
35:35speaking of mom, she's only about five minutes away.
35:37You guys to go.
35:39Rachel, the greenhouse she's only ever dreamed of having.
35:46Ooh, the llamas.
35:48I like it.
35:49I'm not sure why mom likes it so much.
35:51Because you painted it, goofball.
35:53Well, when I was like seven.
35:54Those are the best.
35:55I'm surprised she didn't say anything when we swiped it.
35:57I know.
35:58Speaking of mom, she's only about five minutes away.
36:01We gots to go.
36:03All right, ready for this?
36:05Ten years ago, I promised you something.
36:09I promised you lots of things.
36:11Yeah, where do we begin?
36:13Let's start counting the leaves.
36:14Okay, hold up right here.
36:15Okay.
36:16Okay, and we had to stay away, which I know is driving you a little nuts,
36:18but we wanted to build something for you.
36:20I can tell you're excited because you keep squeezing my hand.
36:23Okay, we should not let her wait any longer.
36:26Yeah, because it's cold up here.
36:28You're doing great.
36:29Okay, baby.
36:30Go ahead and take your blindfold off.
36:31Okay.
36:32It's your brand new greenhouse.
36:35Oh, my God.
36:36It is so big!
36:39Wow!
36:39It is so big!
36:41Wow!
36:43That is amazing!
36:45The main growing part is 2,000 square feet.
36:48Another 400 square feet, that's all prep.
36:51Oh, man, that is so amazing!
36:54The structure itself is made from concrete and local lumber.
36:57In the siding, we rusted these steel plates for a one-of-a-kind steampunk vibe.
37:01That is awesome.
37:02And covering the growing space is this massive 2,400 square foot polycarbonate roof.
37:08Oh, it's gorgeous.
37:09Love that window.
37:10That's beautiful.
37:11Yeah.
37:11So it's not a window.
37:14It's not a window.
37:15It's a door.
37:16How does that work?
37:18Oh, look at you with the remote in your back pocket.
37:23No way!
37:24And it's all hydraulically controlled with this.
37:27You'll be able to take a golf cart right in there.
37:29We need the stuff that you're bringing.
37:30Any compost, potting soil, anything like that.
37:33Love it.
37:34It's overwhelming.
37:35It's overwhelming.
37:36What, do you want to see the inside?
37:37I do, of course.
37:38Okay.
37:39Let's go.
37:39Let's go.
37:39This 10-year promise, it's come true, but in this times-a-million way that he always does.
37:46We tease Cappy all the time about capsizing.
37:49I actually love that it's so big.
37:50Maybe don't tell him, but I'd love it.
37:54Yay!
37:57Oh, man.
37:59Look at this place.
38:01This is the airlock portion, which, as Cap said, can be used for prep work.
38:05We have our main prep island, and you have your big end-end sink, and then all of these
38:12customizable slotted walls, which can hang everything you'll need.
38:15Literally, you can hang hoses, stick tools, you have baskets for overflow stuff, shelves
38:19for, like, all your jars of things.
38:20I bet we're gonna hang all kinds of stuff in here, and it'll be so full.
38:24We won't be able to walk in here pretty soon.
38:26And then this gorgeous thing.
38:27Yeah, it's the only thing I don't really recognize.
38:29What is this thing?
38:29This big, tall thing with blinky lights?
38:31Yeah, the blinky lights.
38:32You might have missed the panels on your way in, but the greenhouse is solar-powered.
38:37And this is a 20KW battery wall.
38:40So, basically, we're off-grid greenhouse.
38:41It's an off-grid, botanical, organic greenhouse.
38:45I love that so bad.
38:46We've been dreaming about it for a long time.
38:48All right, are we gonna go in?
38:49You will not need your coat.
38:50Not need my coat?
38:51Okay.
38:51Not need your coat in that part.
38:52Or the scarves.
38:53Okay.
38:54All right, Mama.
38:55Ready?
38:57We're good.
38:58What?
39:00That's crazy.
39:02Oh, my God, look at it.
39:04We've got you set up with all different kinds of plants, fruit trees, vegetables, perennials,
39:09annuals, you name it.
39:11I know they all look tiny now, but once these babies have a chance to grow, this greenhouse
39:16will look like an organic wonderland.
39:18Down the middle, there's nine separate planters that were cut out of 1,000-gallon steel propane
39:23tanks.
39:24Now they're big, permanent planters.
39:26Can't wait to try it out.
39:26Well, Kate, do you want to show her what's all the way down at the end of our football field
39:29greenhouse here?
39:30Yes.
39:30Let's go look.
39:31Go ahead and take her, Kate.
39:32Okay, all right.
39:34Way beyond anything I could have possibly imagined.
39:39I love that it has so much of Cappy in it.
39:41This beautiful steel work that he loves, and he has this really artistic touch, and then
39:45having Alex kind of get to add her softness, thinking about how the plants will look, perfect.
39:51It's really great.
39:52Wait, wait, what is this space?
39:55What?
39:56This is amazing.
39:57So this is all your space.
39:59And to make sure that this space hit that Edwardian-themed home, we got keycups, candles,
40:05flowers, and fluffy pillows, which I'm surprised that you haven't mentioned anything about them.
40:10I did notice some things missing, because I also noticed the iconic painting up there.
40:15The OG.
40:15What's going on over here, babe?
40:18What?
40:19That little thing?
40:20It's just a 10-foot steampunk art piece.
40:22It also doubles as a place to grow some water plants.
40:25Really beautiful.
40:25I think we made a new term.
40:27I don't know if this exists.
40:28Botanical steampunk.
40:29That's what we were going for.
40:31Sprout picked out some cool water plants for you.
40:33That is gorgeous.
40:35There's actually one thing from every build Sprout and I did this year.
40:39Really?
40:40In this design.
40:40Yes.
40:41Yep.
40:41I'll give you the first one for free.
40:43The long white sticks there.
40:44Yeah, what are those?
40:45Those were parts from inside the airplane.
40:48No way.
40:48Yeah, that was part of the flight controls of the 757.
40:51I would never have guessed that.
40:52It's gorgeous.
40:53Yeah, we just wanted you to have a space, babe, that you could come in and just be.
40:57I really love it so much.
40:59There's pieces of me in here and there's pieces of you in here and pieces of you in here.
41:03Really beautiful.
41:06I love you guys.
41:07I love you too.
41:08Thank you so much.
41:09You're welcome.
41:11All right, well, I invited some friends of yours to come check out your new space.
41:15You did?
41:16You guys hang out?
41:16I'll go check in with them.
41:17Okay.
41:18Cool.
41:18Okay, we'll see you later.
41:20Family and Cappy go hand in hand.
41:23He loves the opportunity to bring people together.
41:25That's his real magic.
41:27And we're going to spend a lot of time in this greenhouse together.
41:30It's pretty awesome.
41:31Hi.
41:33Come in, come in.
41:36Let's keep it.
41:38Do you have a ski pass?
41:39I do.
41:40Okay.
41:40I do too.
41:41This is good.
41:43Yeah, so the rail car dad was just full of scrap iron and garbage.
41:48And we sand blasted it down and then did all the, put apple cider vinegar on leaves and
41:54used them as stamps and different things.
41:56They're all treasures, dad.
41:58The treasures just haven't found a home yet.
42:01More pictures.
42:02More pictures.
42:03So after we put all the pieces down, we're going to move to the top pieces.
42:25So we have all our pieces set up.
42:27You guys got to be quiet.
42:28So we've got this assembly line system sort of set up.
42:32We're running the gaskets, Dustin, Sprout, David, Ruby.
42:35And then when we start doing the actual roofing part of it, we can just carry them up there
42:38and go and get started.
42:39So look at this.
42:42Look at this, people.
42:44Trying to make a TV show here.
42:45And I got this goofy peanut gallery over here.
42:50I'm going to get a drink.
42:51I'm going to get a drink.
42:52I'm going to get a drink.
42:53I'm going to get a drink.
42:54I'm going to get a drink.
42:55I'm going to get a drink.
42:56I'm going to get a drink.
42:57I'm going to get a drink.
42:58I'm going to get a drink.
42:59I'm going to get a drink.
43:00I'm going to get a drink.
43:01I'm going to get a drink.
43:02I'm going to get a drink.
43:03I'm going to get a drink.
43:04I'm going to get a drink.
43:05I'm going to get a drink.
43:06I'm going to get a drink.
43:07I'm going to get a drink.
43:08I'm going to get a drink.
43:09I'm going to get a drink.
43:10I'm going to get a drink.
43:11I'm going to get a drink.
