00:00We want something that's tasteful, but also unique.
00:06Oh, it's good pizza.
00:07We're building this outdoor kitchen, hangout, barbecue space.
00:14Today is rammed earth day.
00:18I don't know why people go to the gym.
00:21Ever.
00:23Little more.
00:24Shoshugiban.
00:25It's a Japanese technique to preserve the wood.
00:27Oh, oh.
00:31Good chap.
00:32Thanks, Teej.
00:33Good chap.
00:34What is this?
00:35It's a smoker.
00:36You can bake in it.
00:39I could grow herbs in those.
00:41I love this.
00:44My given name is Jared Capp.
00:48But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:50This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:52Everyone, Claire, I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:57Woohoo!
00:58But I've recently teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
01:00Whoa.
01:01It looks so good in here.
01:03Who specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:06Whoa!
01:08I'm awake now.
01:09What if we did use a plane?
01:11Wait, really?
01:12All right, Alex, she's all yours.
01:14Into one of a kind creations.
01:16This is no she shed.
01:18This has turned into a she palace.
01:20Oh, my God.
01:21And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:24Love you, man.
01:25Love you.
01:26That is so beautiful.
01:27Oh, my God.
01:28Look it, look it, look it.
01:29But the best part is we get to do it together.
01:33We're headed to Chad and Mandy's today.
01:36The last time you were at their place was the greenhouse, yes?
01:38Seven, eight years ago?
01:39Yeah, that was one of the first projects you ever worked with me on.
01:40Big geodesic dome.
01:41I remember you were very excited about the shape of it.
01:43I was like, this is so cool.
01:44I was like, all the panels are in triangles.
01:45You're so small.
01:46I remember you were very excited about the shape of it.
01:50I was like, this is so cool.
01:51I was like, oh, the panels are in triangles.
01:52You're so small.
01:53Like, this is a project.
01:54I remember that you were all the design.
01:55I remember you were very excited about another picture.
01:56I remember that they could have ended up in a tree.
01:57It was pretty supportive.
01:58It was a huge city in a tree.
01:59Oh, it was like a huge building she's having to go around.
02:00I did that right now.
02:01That's everything.
02:02I was like, I'm so lucky.
02:04You guys are wonderful.
02:05We're just so wonderful, and this is so beautiful.
02:07We're just extremely beautiful.
02:08like this is so cool I was like all the panels are in triangles you're so small
02:13you couldn't hold the extension cords up so you'd roll them on the ground and
02:16then I'd pick them up and hang them up you'll remember they have the log house
02:21in the forest up above lead I'm not sure what they're looking for but I know
02:25they've been doing some upgrades on the landscape and things like that long
02:29before you were born they used to own in town an English pub called the night
02:33cellar yeah it was so cool it was in this
02:36basement of this hundred and thirty year old limestone building it felt very
02:41English pub it was really cool that's crazy yeah I'm excited to see what they
02:46think we can do for them
02:49you
02:58how are you guys good amazing nice to see you thanks for coming up absolutely
03:14yeah tell me a story I'm not sure what uh why we're here we've been here 25 years yeah we're
03:20the second owners really wanted to invite you guys out to see if you could spiff it up a
03:24little bit sure we like to entertain we had an English pub for a number of years so it was
03:28like having a house party every night and we don't have that anymore we miss that just hanging out making
03:34some food that's our style we have family and friends out a lot and uh outdoor space we're
03:39going to outdoor space along that line okay kind of sounds like you need an outdoor kitchen that'd be
03:45great yeah is there a specific place on the property that we're thinking kind of the greenhouse that you
03:51helped with in that area that vicinity awesome well I see pretty green things in it yeah must be
03:56doing well it's producing we thought this is an area right between the greenhouse and the garage where
04:05we'd love to sit around we've got a fireplace there maybe spruce it up and entertain have some friends
04:12and family out open on the sides I think covered just for elements be able to capture that view of you
04:19yep yep absolutely nice how many people are we thinking that you'll have there we're not talking
04:2450 people probably you know six to ten people we want something that's uh tasteful but um
04:31also unique has character I mean our our place has a lot of character and I think they would do a
04:37phenomenal job with that and then are there any things that we should stay away from in terms of
04:42colors or are there things that you want us to highlight we're very earthy very timeless yeah
04:48blend in to the to the area all right I think I'm good love it very cool thank you guys thank you so
04:56much for coming awesome you bet thank you guys we'll talk to you guys in a bit thanks see you later
05:00well it's almost lunchtime uh hey why don't we head home and fire up the pizza up and figure this
05:07out sounds good to me oh what is this it smells good it's a lunch time looks like we lost the sun
05:23yeah but it's perfect pizza weather little crispy I figured you'd want just cheese on yours let's talk
05:31Chad and Mandy they entertain that means family friends food and drink think in outdoor kitchens
05:38just what they need oh it's good pizza is it good the challenge I think is to make it fit their style
05:45mm-hmm so if you did sort of a square back here with a roof on it like some sort of cover and then we
05:51did uh this is where that fire pit is yep and then people could sit out here because here's the greenhouse
05:56mm-hmm and here's that view I mean is just nothing but view that way yeah I think they definitely need
06:01a food prep space to just set the food out the question is what would we build it out of I clearly
06:07love my natural materials how about rammed earth you know we'll take the native soil and compress it
06:13into forms and use that as the base for the food prep area that would be really cool actually it's
06:20it's natural but it's not crunchy it is very modern looking when it's done it's modern looking it looks
06:26really clean there's no maintenance it is just there yeah what would the roof be would that just
06:33be like wood it's because what I'm thinking about is we have this gray scale build right and then we
06:40have these bright wood brown beams it feels a little out of place burn them show sugar bottom
06:46hold up what is this called show sugar bond I swear that's like a roasted pepper or something
06:54it sounds like it is that's a shishito different close sugar bond just take a weed torch and you burn
07:02them used to do it to preserve wood a long time ago in Japan the plan is to create an outdoor kitchen
07:09there will be a space for Mandy and Chad to host family and friends and relive their time as pub owners
07:15we'll build a covered area with wooden beams heavy enough to handle a big snow load and treat them
07:22with an ancient Japanese technique to blend them into Mandy's earthy palette under the roof will be a
07:29food prep area including a mini fridge a barbecue grill and a countertop made from natural materials all
07:36supported by a rammed earth base a round concrete pad will extend in front to handle seating for a few
07:42guests or for dancing during jam sessions when we normally have a build like this there's kind of
07:49already an area that's kind of rough and tough that we can mess things up a little bit but for this we
07:54really need to be careful about all their finished finished space yeah and all of those lawns are off
07:59limits you're gonna figure out a color palette for the rammed earth for me yes I'll source timbers
08:04okay cool should heat your pizza back up I'm gonna warm up mine too thank you you're welcome
08:19with fall here and winter on the way we can't waste any time getting the foundation set but with Alex's
08:26mandate of protecting the lawn we have to be careful with the heavy machinery so instead of using the skid steer
08:33we've rented a sod cutter to do the job I miss my air-conditioned skid steer with Ruby and Dustin's help we
08:54get the area cleared and ready for concrete forms don't tell Sprout but I was able to use a baby
09:02excavator to carefully dig out the excess dirt after compacting the soil the forms are set and the
09:10rebar is put into place all we need now is 11 cubic yards of concrete and a bunch of muscle
09:18soft plastic and a bunch of muscle
09:20not a beautiful day
09:33today is concrete stamped patio day at Chad and Mandy's we have all the rebar in with the electrical conduit in
09:44and we're 100% ready, and like clockwork,
09:48our concrete guys are here.
09:57We brought in a pump this time
09:59because we didn't want to drive a concrete truck
10:01fully loaded across their yard.
10:03It makes really, really deep ruts.
10:06All right, the boys got their gum boots on.
10:07I better get mine on and jump into this.
10:10It's not like you can hide a concrete pump truck,
10:15so to keep the build a total surprise,
10:17Chad and Mandy are staying with friends while we work.
10:20We pump in the concrete, oftentimes called mud,
10:23filling the form as evenly as we can to the top
10:25to make a level surface.
10:27Too much mud's just as bad as not enough mud.
10:33Then we go over it all with a series of trowels and screeds,
10:36each of which have a specific job,
10:38until we're left with an even, smooth surface.
10:47And then it's just a waiting game for it to set up enough
10:50for us to actually stamp the texture into it.
10:55Sprout and I decided to do a stamped patio for them.
10:58She picked out a random slate pattern,
11:01which is this sort of timeless-looking stamp
11:03that'll be really cool for this outdoor space.
11:06A powder release agent keeps the rubber form
11:09from sticking to the wet concrete
11:11as Dustin and I tamp them down.
11:13But it also adds a dash of color.
11:15This one's black,
11:16the point being to make the concrete look
11:18a little more like natural stone.
11:20I'm headed over to my buddy Levi's shop
11:31to pick out a piece of countertop
11:34for Chad and Mandy's outdoor kitchen.
11:36Sprout and I talked about a couple different things.
11:38We talked about pouring a concrete top.
11:40We talked about even doing butcher block.
11:42Ultimately, we decided wanting something
11:45as little maintenance as possible.
11:47So we landed on a stone countertop.
11:49My buddy Levi is the guy that can make that happen.
11:52One of the funnest things about what we get to do
11:54is sort of this challenge to recycle and upcycle things.
11:57In this case, instead of going to buy a whole slab,
12:00there's a chance that Levi has a remnant of a countertop for us,
12:03and hopefully we can score that,
12:05and it'll work for our project.
12:12We really wanted to do something sort of next level,
12:16something elegant.
12:17A quartz or a marble or something like that
12:19we wanted to make just really, really sharp.
12:21I like this one.
12:23How we doing, Cap?
12:24Hey, Daddy-O. How's it going?
12:25Doing all right.
12:26What have we got cooking?
12:27This is for a local couple
12:29that were building this outdoor kitchen hangout.
12:32barbecue space.
12:34So if you're going to be doing something outside,
12:36you're going to be looking at natural stone,
12:38granite.
12:39Probably going to be your best one.
12:40Okay.
12:41Are any of these granite?
12:42This one is granite.
12:43That one is granite.
12:44I did like the black and white one.
12:45Do you have any rems of this?
12:46Let's go look out in the yard
12:47and see if we can find any remnants.
12:49Okay.
12:50Holy camoly.
12:52Got a few options.
12:53Look at that boneyard of stone.
12:55So these are all pieces
12:56that come from obviously other jobs,
12:57so the remnant or the leftover piece
12:59is what these all are.
13:00Correct.
13:01This will be what we were looking at inside there,
13:03the discount light.
13:04Oh, sure, sure.
13:05Okay.
13:06That looks like about a half slab.
13:07That's plenty big for what we're doing.
13:09Perfect.
13:10I'll definitely take that one.
13:11We'll get it tagged.
13:12We'll be in touch.
13:13Appreciate it, dude.
13:15The town of Leed is above 5,000 feet in elevation.
13:31That means Chad and Mandy's place gets snowed on more than we do down in Spearfish.
13:36In one blizzard, they got hammered by like four and a half feet of snow.
13:40I'm having my favorite fabricator, Rodney, build four custom posts for the outdoor kitchen.
13:46Cappy has dropped off more material, of course, here at the shop.
13:50I need to build it with material strong enough to hold up the chunky beam roof,
13:54plus a couple of tons of wet snow, while still looking sleek and elegant to suit Chad and Mandy's style.
13:59Good chat.
14:00Okay, I figure rather than track up the driveway, we can just walk these over there.
14:09So our front left corner is going to be our start, because that piece of conduit has to feed up inside this first post for an outlet.
14:16For a blender or a hot dish thing or an amp for Chad's guitar, things like that.
14:22Easy peasy.
14:23Yeah.
14:24You feeling lucky?
14:25We're perfect.
14:26That's pretty dang good.
14:27We'll take it.
14:28I will, all day long.
14:29Let's anchor that.
14:30With the post going up and being anchored down, Mandy and Chad's outdoor kitchen is starting to take shape.
14:48Sweet!
14:49I'm taking a really large torch, we're burning the top layer of the wood and sealing it.
15:05It's a natural way to protect it rather than painting it.
15:10Today I'm putting Sprout behind the wheel of the telehandler.
15:25It looks a little different than usual because we have a jib attached to the front.
15:29That'll extend the reach of the machine so we can fly these heavy beams in without tracking across Chad and Mandy's lawn.
15:40Wee!
15:41We're gonna go up the driveway, swing wide, and we're gonna come in at an angle.
15:48Okay.
15:49Okay.
15:50If one of these beams clips the house, not good.
15:53So why am I letting Sprout drive?
15:55You gotta let kids practice stuff.
15:58You gotta let them practice driving.
15:59You gotta let them use machinery.
16:01Or they're never gonna know how to do it.
16:03Slow and smooth.
16:04Swim fast.
16:05Okay.
16:07Let's go up.
16:08All right, Ruby, we're moving.
16:13Real easy.
16:14Real easy.
16:15Nice and slow.
16:21Okay, are you close to where you like it?
16:22I'm pretty dang close to where I want to be.
16:24Okay.
16:25Nice driving, kiddo.
16:26Thanks.
16:27One down, one more to go.
16:30We're coming down.
16:31Real slow.
16:33Awesome job.
16:34That was fun.
16:35At this rate, I'm gonna lose my job.
16:48With her I-beams bolted into place, Sprout heads to dance class, and it's time for the
16:56rest of us to get our wood planks prepped and ready.
17:05We set the first rafter up on top of our beams to mark the bird mouth, which is a little notch that we cut.
17:11So when the rafter sits down, it sits flat on top of our I-beam piece.
17:15We're gonna cut this first one, and then we're gonna use that one as the template for the other six.
17:21We always want to use the same template every time.
17:24So we're gonna get this one set.
17:26As soon as we cut them, we'll burn the ends and make everything match with our cool shishugi bomb that Alex got sorted.
17:31And as we start flying rafters, we'll be on the roof boards today.
17:47Let's go!
17:48We got our first beam cut.
17:51Bird mouth.
17:52Burned.
17:53Ready to go.
17:54We're gonna start stacking this on the far side, working our way back towards the garage.
17:58We're gonna do a lovely dance that the boys are gonna keep cutting.
18:01Ruby and I are gonna keep flying.
18:03We're gonna have a roof today.
18:07Woohoo, buddy!
18:09Like a glove.
18:10This is the first time I've ever sugar bonded anything.
18:13I don't know.
18:14What is this again?
18:15Show Shuggy Bon shows to burn.
18:20Shuggy is cedar or cypress.
18:22Sure.
18:23And Bon is plank.
18:24I learn something here every day.
18:26We just got our first burned plank secured.
18:29Just five more to go.
18:32One by one, we get each plank slotted precisely between the I-beams.
18:37That's perfect.
18:40That was the last of our rafters.
18:42I just gotta get this one squared up and bolted down.
18:45Dustin and David make quick work of installing the roof.
18:48Which means we've got the covered portion of this build done.
18:51Now we can get to work on the kitchen part.
18:53I'm on the hunt for rain chains and I know just where to find them.
19:04Instead of using a normal downspout, rain water will run out of our gutters and trickle down the lengths of our chains into pots.
19:12It'll be fun and elegant.
19:14Most people have a garage full of stuff they won't throw away.
19:19Happy has a full scale junkyard.
19:21I'm here searching for the perfect set of chains.
19:35I have no idea where these are from, what their past life was, but I guess I'll ever know.
19:44I can haul this back to Granny Flats so Cappy can chop it up.
19:49Having his own boneyard really does come in handy.
19:52Now it's time for the part I've been looking forward to all week.
20:11Today is Rammed Earth Day.
20:14I'm so, so excited.
20:15One of my favorite things ever is natural building.
20:17And what's really cool about this technique, it's thousands of years old.
20:21This beautiful, completely natural.
20:24We have limestone crusher fines, which is a byproduct from the limestone quarry here.
20:28It's all the little chips and the limestone dust that falls out as they make gravel.
20:33We mix this with about 7-10% Portland cement and you pneumatically or mechanically ram it in.
20:41Just like concrete walls, we assemble the forms in the shape of our Rammed Earth creation.
20:45So just.
20:53Dustin and Ruby are at the beginning of our production line, churning out the wet mixture.
20:58Here we go.
21:08I love it.
21:09That's perfect, huh?
21:10Yup.
21:11While David and I dump it into the forms and start compacting.
21:15That's it.
21:19Then it's like washing your hair.
21:20Rinse and repeat.
21:21Bucket after bucket.
21:24At least that's what I'm told.
21:25I don't know why people go to the gym.
21:35Ever.
21:50The guys start adding dye to make the mixture darker and darker.
21:53When it's done, you'll see the color gradation go from light to dark.
21:59Bottom to top.
22:01It's going really smooth.
22:02We'll finish this guy up.
22:03Clean up all our tools.
22:05And the only sad thing is I have to wait to strip my forms.
22:08It's like Christmas morning as a kid.
22:10I was never very good at waiting for that either.
22:11While we wait for our rammed earth to cure, I'm headed over to Granny Flats to unearth something that will add a very personal touch to Chad and Mandy's outdoor kitchen.
22:29If I was a keg, where would I be?
22:39Aha!
22:41Got an idea.
22:42But before I tell you what it is, I do need to admit something.
22:45I don't know how to tap a keg.
22:48I understand how the concept works.
22:51I know it's under pressure.
22:53And I know there's liquid in here.
22:56Which I imagine is aged like a fine wine.
23:00I'm gonna get made fun of on the internet for this.
23:06Gross.
23:08It's a different color.
23:10That did not age like a fine wine.
23:12Chad and Mandy used to own a bar a long time ago that they don't have anymore.
23:18But Chad's still a big fan of beer and brewing.
23:21What I thought would be neat is if we cut some bands out of this, we could actually do some sort of little planter just to sort of spice up the back of the outdoor kitchen.
23:30The idea is these are just gonna have little culinary herbs like your cilantro's and your basil's and your things like that.
23:37Because Mandy loves to cook, so I wanted to give her a little something that was literally right above the counter, right above the barbecue grill.
23:44Now that I have these three rings, I'm just gonna clean them up, mount my attachment points, put a little half-moon piece of aluminum in there, and we'll be ready to go.
23:55There's a lot of smells going on in that.
23:57I hope Chad and Mandy love this so much.
24:00My goal is that Chad knows what this is the first time he sees it.
24:03We'll see how far he is from his pub days.
24:05So we'll weld a piece of aluminum across the bottom here, and then that'll be the actual planting space.
24:12Here.
24:14Like this.
24:16And this.
24:17Planters with love.
24:18Today is the big reveal.
24:34But not for the client, for us.
24:37We're ready to strip the rammed earth forms off, and this is always my favorite part.
24:41We make a plan, we put the colorant in, we tamp the levels, but we don't actually know what it looks like until we strip all the forms.
24:49So the boys are just about done pulling pins.
24:51I'm gonna jump in and help them, and then we're gonna get to pull back the forms and see what everything looks like.
24:56We're gonna get to see the wave that we created in there with what I'm gonna call monochromatic colorant.
25:09All right, you pull those too.
25:11I got one on this side.
25:13Look at him like it's a present on Christmas morning.
25:16It is! This is it!
25:17Are you ready?
25:18Let's go.
25:19No!
25:27My!
25:28I love it.
25:29We got our colors!
25:30We did.
25:31Nice job, dude.
25:32Let's just take her apart.
25:33We'll pop all the end caps first.
25:34All right.
25:35Both sides.
25:36Hold on.
25:38Oh, sh...
25:39Dude.
25:40Look at that wave.
25:48All right.
25:50Last one.
25:55That's a cool outdoor kitchen.
25:56It's gonna be awesome.
25:57And this granite countertop is gonna be perfect.
26:11Today is a very crisp fall morning.
26:13It was in the 20s this morning when I woke up.
26:15I'm on my way up to Chad and Mandy's outdoor kitchen project.
26:19Dustin, David, and Ruby are already there.
26:22And it's gonna be a big day.
26:24We've got the roof on.
26:25The rammed earth structure's in.
26:27It looks incredible.
26:31Levi and his team are cutting that gorgeous granite remnant to size.
26:35Dustin's prepping the rammed earth wall to accept the granite countertop.
26:39The next steps for us, we have a copper gutter going on the backside of the building.
26:44David actually brought some copper gutters that he'd had from a job site 20 years ago.
26:49He'd brought those for us to use on this project.
26:52And then we're gonna get to dress this thing up and show it to Chad and Mandy.
26:57Have a beautiful day.
27:03Morning, fellas.
27:04Come on, Cap.
27:05So I'm trying to flatten out this rammed earth for the granite.
27:13Taking a grinder, I gotta have my levels here to make sure everything's just proper.
27:18Cause when we set the slab on it, it can't teeter.
27:22So we're making it flat.
27:24What'd you do?
27:25That's a $150 coat.
27:27Wow, that was fantastic.
27:28It's time to get real.
27:29Hey, hey, hey, Dustin.
27:30Dustin.
27:31Oh.
27:32Hey, do you know what David's gonna teach me to solder today?
27:33It's definitely an art, dude.
27:34To do that is an art.
27:35I'm gonna do a sample piece first.
27:36One that we can hide?
27:37One that we can hide.
27:39Soldering is the process of using molten metal, like glue, to join parts together.
28:07It creates a solid connection.
28:09I'm going to cut a little piece off of this gutter to practice on.
28:17No pressure, just everyone's staring at me to it.
28:24All right, David, go easy on me.
28:26Oh, you're going to just be a whiz at this.
28:28Okay, so we're clamped, we're good.
28:30Now, the fun begins.
28:32The term we use is chase the flame.
28:35You're going to actually bring the flame away from this
28:39because you're not trying to heat the solder.
28:41This has to be warm enough to melt this.
28:44All right.
28:45Chase your flame.
28:49Slow down.
28:50Chase your flame.
28:53Don't get behind your solder.
28:56You're done.
28:57Don't go back.
28:58You can see where when you came back here, you left that rough.
29:01If you hadn't come back, that wouldn't have happened.
29:03Gotcha.
29:04That's the mistake.
29:05Okay.
29:06That's it.
29:07So you get a B-plus.
29:08That's way better than I got in high school on anything.
29:11Look, Dad.
29:12Look what I did.
29:13With the pieces falling into place for the roof and the gutters,
29:19it's time to make something to manage where the water will flow.
29:23Rather than traditional downspouts, we're going to do a rain chain.
29:27We'll have two chains, 94 inches.
29:31And that'll give us a little bit of extra to go all the way to the ground
29:36or sit in the big potted plant or anything that Mandy wants to change up there.
29:40So she'll have a little option for that.
29:45Before we can hang chains, we need to hang the gutters.
29:48In order to do that, we need some support brackets.
29:50So I'm headed back to Granny Flats to source some scrap steel to build some custom ones for the kitchen.
29:56David and I soldered the new copper gutter sections together, and now the challenge is to hang them from a custom bracket.
30:05They sell brackets online, but I need a bracket heavy enough to hang a rain chain from.
30:10I'm going to use some scrap steel that I have, but it's a thick enough gauge steel that I can cut these custom brackets,
30:16which will bolt to the end of the rafter tails, and that's what will support our new copper gutter.
30:21So we'll get those shaped up, cut out, we'll paint them black so they match the Shoshuggie Bond beams that we did.
30:28This gets mounted to a plate, which will get screwed to the rafter tail, and we'll drill our little holes in there.
30:33You've got to have gutters, by the way. Please have gutters. They're super helpful.
30:37You've got to have gutters. Cabby out.
30:42Those custom brackets are made to hold some serious weight, and they'll need to because Sprout picked out some beefy material
30:49that we're going to use for our rain chains.
30:53So this is a set of wheel chains off of Skitter. Skitter is a big articulated loader with a hydraulic grapple.
31:01Yeah, they're real big. But what I like about them is these crazy knuckles.
31:06So I'm going to work on separating these into two long strings that are 94 inches long.
31:12We'll hang these on our new gutter brackets. Then when it rains, rainwater will trickle down these cool looking things.
31:35One custom rain chain. I like it.
31:53We've got a big day planned for Chad and Mandy's outdoor kitchen today.
31:57Sort of all the finishing pieces are coming together in one swoop.
32:02Granite countertops are showing up this morning. It's the first time we get to see them put on the rammed earth.
32:06We're installing the copper gutters. We're installing the rain chains, barbecue grill that we're going to put in there.
32:12And yeah, it's all coming together.
32:18The donuts are still warm.
32:21Countertop boys beat me here. Not by much.
32:32Good morning, fellas.
32:33Good morning.
32:34I did. You made it here.
32:35You beat me.
32:36Oh, yes. Look at these.
32:38Hope you're feeling strong today.
32:40Since this granite slab weighs over 400 pounds, we're going to use this mini cart to get it close and the clamps to deadlift this thing over the rammed earth walls.
32:49One, two, three.
32:52High way just a little bit.
32:56Excellent.
33:00Those wheels are slicked.
33:02Big, fat, wide wheels.
33:03All right.
33:04One, two, three.
33:06All right.
33:07We'll just lean.
33:08Come down just a little bit.
33:10Okay.
33:11Oh, no kidding.
33:12Slide.
33:15Excellent.
33:16Oh, my gosh, dude.
33:17How sharp is that?
33:18It's fun to see it in the daylight.
33:19Yeah.
33:20Makes a big difference in the way it looks.
33:23Oh, yeah.
33:25Moment of truth.
33:26If I measure right, it fits underneath here.
33:28With room to spare.
33:29Well, how about them apples?
33:31Awesome.
33:32All right.
33:33We'll get it finished up.
33:34Glue down.
33:35Cool.
33:36I'll get my tools to get back to work on my end.
33:37Thanks, dude.
33:38Appreciate it, brother.
33:39The countertop really helps me imagine the final kitchen.
33:42You know what else would help with that?
33:44The fridge.
33:45I was trying to come up with a couple of refrigerator puns, and we settled on, this is cool.
33:53This is one of the things I enjoy about building things, especially custom things like this,
33:58is take a little time, put the conduit in, put an electrical outlet inside your cabinet,
34:03and no one will ever see the cord.
34:23We're getting really close on Chad and Mandy's outdoor kitchen.
34:26All the components are going in, looks great.
34:28But no outdoor kitchen would be complete without a really big barbecue.
34:33So that's what we're headed to get this morning.
34:40This is a ceramic barbecue grill.
34:42This thing is so heavy.
34:44They put it in in the pallet, but we have to hand unload this when we get up to Chad and Mandy's.
34:51And the cool thing about these, these are on wheels.
34:53They can put it anywhere they want, so there's multiple configurations of the kitchen
34:57to be able to help just make it the most versatile we can.
35:08Okay, we've got the grill.
35:09Now we just need to place it.
35:12You and I are going to hand it to David and Josh.
35:18Oh yeah, just wait.
35:23Keep coming out a little bit more.
35:24More people.
35:25Oh yeah.
35:26So you need to turn it?
35:27Okay.
35:31Nice.
35:32Flush that front corner up.
35:33Thank you, fellas.
35:34I love it.
35:35Very cool.
35:36Alright, beautiful.
35:37Nice.
35:42But before Chad and Mandy can start grilling steaks outside,
35:46we have an essential item to help prepare them for the elements.
35:49First up are soldered copper gutters.
35:52Good looking gutter, boys.
35:54You did a great job, Cap, for your first time soldering.
35:57Thanks for having the patience to teach me.
35:59You're easy to teach.
36:02We're going to just roll it in.
36:04And once you're set,
36:06and then we're going to roll the back in right behind the gutter apron.
36:10Woo hoo hoo!
36:11Very satisfying.
36:13What do you think, Cappy?
36:14It fits those brackets like a glove, almost like we measured it.
36:18Dude, that is cool.
36:20Screw it down?
36:21Let's screw it down.
36:24Once these gutters are secured, the last piece to install are the custom rain chains.
36:31Dave had already cut holes in the copper to help the rain drain down the chains.
36:36We're just going to use this old chain link, and that's how that whole chain system will hang down from that.
36:42I love it.
36:58Water comes down, straight down the chain, into our big pot.
37:03Now that is a husky custom rain chain.
37:07It's always so satisfying to see the things that you plan get put together in real life.
37:17Just a few more tweaks, and we can reveal this one-of-a-kind pub-inspired outdoor hangout to Chad and Mandy.
37:26With our patio furniture and our fire pit in place, it's just about time we go grab Chad and Mandy.
37:43Well, after Sprout finishes practicing for her upcoming recital.
37:48How's your stuff going?
37:51Good! We're almost at the bow section, which is a bit of a tough piece to wrangle.
37:55The what section?
37:56The bowing at the end.
37:58What is this? It's gentle. It's very small.
38:04Smile.
38:06That's adorable.
38:07Okay, so we should actually show this thing, huh?
38:11Okay.
38:12This looks really sharp, kid.
38:14It does look really good.
38:15Alright, is everything where you want it?
38:16I have a few more things I'd like to zhuzh up while you go get them, if that works.
38:20Okay. You want to go get them?
38:21Yeah. Okay.
38:22Just going right over to the edge of the grass, no peeking.
38:37How long do we make them wait?
38:39Alright.
38:41Open in three, two, one.
38:44Oh my, wow.
38:46I can't believe it.
38:51It's just so gorgeous.
38:56Oh my God.
38:58Wow.
39:00The silence is freaking me out there for a minute.
39:07This looks so beautiful.
39:10Welcome to your new outdoor kitchen.
39:12Sprout, the boys and I wanted to give you guys something that harkened back to your life.
39:16So we came up with an area that you can cook, serve drinks, host parties, or just sit out by the fire.
39:23Oh.
39:25It looks beautiful.
39:27Wow.
39:28Go on up. It's yours.
39:33Oh my gosh.
39:35Is it what you thought it was going to be?
39:36No.
39:37It's better.
39:39So when we met, y'all wanted a place to have friends and family.
39:42You wanted a space to cook and a place to maybe have the band and hang out.
39:46So, of course, this outdoor kitchen comes with all of the essentials.
39:50A barbecue, a mini fridge, plus plenty of storage and counter space.
39:54Yeah, this is, uh, we'll be able to do that easily with this.
39:59This is a dream.
40:00Look at the countertops.
40:02Yeah, we decided to go with the granite countertop for the clean, natural look.
40:06And speaking of natural, the countertop sits on a structure we made using technique called rammed earth.
40:10It's limestone in Portland cement.
40:13You take a jackhammer that we pounded into form work with.
40:17Once it sets up, it's essentially limestone again.
40:19No weather problems whatsoever.
40:21Oh.
40:22It is beautiful.
40:23The coloring, I like natural colors, and it just blends in with the concrete, the countertops.
40:29Ties in nicely.
40:30And this, actually, this cabinet rolls out from underneath here.
40:33Oh, nice.
40:34So then it's matching, of course.
40:36So you have an electric outlet there.
40:37Oh, great.
40:38Oh, great.
40:39So now you can bring that over.
40:40You can have a blender.
40:41You can have a speaker or an amp for the musicians in the room.
40:44And then when you're done entertaining or you're not using it, it just tucks back away.
40:47Yeah?
40:48Yeah.
40:49Yeah, and also, uh, we wanted a barbecue that had multiple functions.
40:51You know, I wanted to be able to, you guys, if it's just the two of you and wanted to grill some steaks,
40:54but also it's a smoker, you can bake in it.
40:57Oh, awesome.
40:58Things like that.
40:59Yeah.
41:00I love these.
41:01I could grow herbs in those, right?
41:03Yep, that's what those are for.
41:04Yeah, essentially.
41:05Chad, what are those planters?
41:08Kegs?
41:09Mm-hmm.
41:10Are they kegs?
41:11Yeah.
41:12What?
41:13Cut out some kegs.
41:14Look at the beans.
41:15Those are dug fur timbers, and they're sealed using a blowtorch in a technique called shoshugiban.
41:20It's a Japanese technique to preserve the wood.
41:23And rounding out this kitchen, we have custom copper gutters and rain chains repurposed from
41:28my boneyard that empty into pots.
41:31You can have culinary herbs in or flowers and things like that.
41:34Oh, we love the copper.
41:35That's unbelievable.
41:36Yeah.
41:37It is beautiful.
41:38I just have a big smile on my face, and I just sense this is so gorgeous.
41:42I love it.
41:43Well, should we let these lovely people enjoy their kitchen and their evening?
41:46Yes.
41:47Awesome.
41:48Well, thank you for your trust in doing this for you.
41:50Appreciate it.
41:51It was easy.
41:52It was easy.
41:53Thank you, Alex.
41:54Awesome.
41:55Very cool.
41:57Cappy and Alex, they knocked it out of the park.
42:00We asked for cohesiveness.
42:02We asked for simplicity.
42:04They hit everything and more.
42:05I love the design.
42:07That rammed earth.
42:08It was just beautiful.
42:09It reminded me of the hills.
42:10The design was really cool.
42:12I love the countertop.
42:14Yeah.
42:15Get the guitar out.
42:16Get the guitar out.
42:17Get some friends out.
42:18Get a piano out here.
42:19Got a stage.
42:21I can't wait to have our friends and family out.
42:25We'll have plenty of moments shared there.
42:28It's going to be a party.
42:30It's a cake.
42:35No way.
42:37They cut the cake.
42:38They got inspired by you.
42:40Yeah, from the car.
42:41Oh, you got the guitar.
42:43Oh, my goodness.
42:44So we could sit down here and you could be up here.
42:46Aww.
42:47I can see now.
42:48Aww.
42:49Yeah.
42:50Woo!
42:51Woo!
42:52Woo!
42:53Woo!
42:54Woo!
42:55Woo!
