2004 premiership-winning Canterbury Bulldogs player Matt Utai is fighting for life after being shot in Sydney’s south-west, with police investigating a suspected targeted attack.

00:05being shot during an early morning attack in Sydney's southwest. Emergency
00:09services were called to Greenacre shortly after 6 a.m. where the 44 year
00:14old was found with gunshot wounds to his stomach and leg. He was treated at the
00:18scene before being rushed to hospital in a critical condition. Police allege
00:22shots were fired from an SUV outside a home before the vehicle fled. Officers
00:27later located a burning SUV nearby which is being examined forensically.
00:32Investigators are treating the incidents as linked and are probing whether the
00:35shooting was targeted. Utai played 162 NRL games including a Premiership winning
00:41season with the Canterbury Bulldogs in 2004.
