00:00Hey, guys.
00:01Well, hey, guys.
00:02I need their help to expand.
00:04So this is just like a one-stop shop for everything go.
00:07Yes.
00:10There's a building on the outside of town.
00:12It was a granary.
00:13Dude, yeah, that's perfect.
00:15This is big.
00:17In order to make it movable,
00:19we had to take the lid off of the building.
00:23Hold up!
00:24We're stuck on something.
00:25Good Lord, this thing is wise.
00:27My rear wheels are barely touching the ground.
00:30I don't like this.
00:35That is bananas.
00:37In three, two, one.
00:40Oh, my God.
00:43My given name is Jared Cappy.
00:46But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:48This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:50Everyone clear?
00:51I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:55Woo-hoo!
00:56But a few years ago, I teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
00:59Whoa.
01:00It looks so good in here.
01:02We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:05Whoa!
01:06I'm awake now.
01:08What if we did use a plane?
01:09Wait, really?
01:10All right, Alex.
01:11She's all yours.
01:13Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:15Oh, my God.
01:16It's so amazing.
01:18And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:20Love you.
01:21I love you.
01:22Oh, my God.
01:23But the best part...
01:24Oh!
01:27...is we get to do it together.
01:28Come on, kid.
01:29Where are we off to today?
01:30Okay.
01:31So I found this really awesome lady.
01:32She's so cool.
01:33She has a stand at the farmer's market.
01:35But her main thing is goats.
01:36She makes, like, goat soap, goat, candles, goat everything.
01:40What's her name?
01:41Her name is Shelby Lunn.
01:42And she made...
01:43We went to high school.
01:44Really?
01:45True story.
01:46Yeah, she's so cool, and she seems so nice.
01:47Yeah, Shelby's great.
01:48And she mentioned...
01:49She's so cool, and she seems so nice.
01:50Yeah, Shelby's great.
01:51And she mentioned how she needs some sort of expansion on the farm.
02:08Like, she has a workshop.
02:09And it's in her garage.
02:10And it's just as the business is growing, the space isn't growing with her.
02:14The business is growing, the space isn't growing with her.
02:16She needs a designated space that's separate from her home.
02:20Yeah, I hear that.
02:28Oh my gosh, this is awesome.
02:31Oh, hey guys!
02:33Hi!
02:34How's it going?
02:35Hi!
02:37Hi darling.
02:38Hi!
02:39Oh my goodness, this is awesome.
02:41It's so pretty.
02:42You just like wake up in the morning with your coffee and be like, oh.
02:44We are living the dream.
02:46Yes, we have two boys.
02:48Odin is 13, Ulrich is 11.
02:51And this is our farm.
02:55This is my La Mancha Norma.
02:57I can get about a gallon of milk from her a day.
03:00What?
03:01Holy camole!
03:02Yeah, she's a good milker.
03:03Your goat products sound amazing.
03:05Just from the sustainability piece of it is like,
03:07it's farm to table as you can get, right?
03:09Yeah, it's all natural.
03:11It's all made by my hand.
03:12Yeah.
03:13So how long have you actually had the farm?
03:14We bought the property in 2016.
03:17Okay.
03:17And it wasn't a farm, it was just the house.
03:20Once we got out here and saw it, it was too good not to take.
03:23Yeah.
03:25Packed up the family and...
03:27Moved them out here.
03:28Moved out here.
03:29I was doing real estate then, and 2019, my dad was diagnosed with stage four cancer.
03:35Oh, wow.
03:36So, yeah, going through that really made me want to change my life.
03:42Something that just always resonated with me is my dad always lived in the moment.
03:51So, I knew I wanted to do what I wanted.
03:58So then we started getting goats and started building the farm.
04:01And so that's where I started to make the goat products.
04:04So, Alex said you guys talked about you wanting to expand.
04:08I'm really needing to expand my workshop.
04:11We're here to have Cappy and Alex help us with a new building.
04:18Where I make all my skin products is just too small.
04:23And I need their help to expand.
04:25So, this is a big place.
04:27What are you thinking?
04:28Well, we're kind of thinking over in that area.
04:31Like the way you come in?
04:32Yeah.
04:33Okay.
04:34So, if we want to walk over there, I can show that to you guys.
04:36Yeah.
04:37I also need somewhere to showcase all my products.
04:42You know, I get calls all the time of people wanting to come pick it up here.
04:45They come to my shop and it's kind of embarrassing because it's just a mess in there.
04:50So how many kinds of animals do you have?
04:52Well, we have around seven to eight different animals.
04:56Ducks, chickens, horses, goats, a donkey named Gus.
05:01There's a donkey?
05:02There's a miniature donkey.
05:03Oh, yeah.
05:04A donkey named Gus.
05:05He is so fun.
05:09And then here's kind of where I guess we're thinking of having the building put.
05:14So this is just like a one-stop shop for everything goats, right?
05:18Yes.
05:19And also storage.
05:20Okay.
05:21Like my soaps are quite the process.
05:23It takes about eight weeks to make just one bar because the way I do it is hundreds of
05:27years old.
05:28Wow.
05:29And so I need a lot of space for them to sit and cure.
05:32Do they need to be in a cold space, in a warm space?
05:36Room temperature to a little bit cooler would be perfect.
05:39Now, in terms of like style, what do you like?
05:42Definitely.
05:43I love the French country look.
05:45Okay.
05:46Like a lot of exposed wood.
05:47Yeah.
05:48And I love antiques anyway.
05:49I love the history.
05:50Gosh, you got all the questions, kid.
05:51I don't know if I have any.
05:52Yeah.
05:53I mean, I think I'm good because I have all sorts of ideas.
05:55Awesome.
05:56We'll go back and talk about the plan.
05:58Love it.
05:59Okay.
06:00Love it.
06:02Well, that was super fun.
06:11Oh, my gosh.
06:12So much fun.
06:13When we were hearing about all the things that she works with, it really sounds like we're
06:17almost making like an apothecary, like somewhere that sells natural products.
06:21Right?
06:22I like that.
06:23The goat apothecary.
06:25In terms of structure, obviously, we love to repurpose things.
06:29Well, I thought of it while she was talking.
06:32There was a farm on the outside of town.
06:34There's a building that still sits there.
06:36It's got like a rusty silver tin roof.
06:38Dude.
06:39Yeah, that's perfect.
06:40Yeah.
06:41What I like about it is let's start the project with something that's antique.
06:44Yeah.
06:45So I know the guy who owns it.
06:46I can give him a call.
06:47Yeah.
06:48100%.
06:49Hey there.
06:50How's it going, boss?
06:51Good.
06:52Sprout and I, we just left a client's house and we're trying to figure out some sort of
07:00workshop slash retail space.
07:04Awesome.
07:05You guys have that little white building.
07:07That was from the old Meyers property, old, old settlers in the area.
07:14And when we bought that property, everything got torn down except that little greenery building.
07:21Gosh, if you have somebody that would love it and use it, we'd sure be open to that.
07:26Rick, would you be open to Sprout and I popping in and taking a look at it?
07:29That would be great.
07:30Thanks, partner.
07:31Appreciate it.
07:32Have an awesome day.
07:33Bye-bye.
07:34You want to pop by and check it out on the way home?
07:35Heck yeah.
07:36Cool.
07:41Oh.
07:42There she is.
07:43There she is.
07:48This is big.
07:50I like the size of it.
07:51This siding has seen much better days.
07:55Yeah, this wood definitely needs to go.
07:57What do you think?
07:58It's got to be turn of the century.
08:00I bet it's early 1900s.
08:01Yeah.
08:02So, Rick said it was a granary.
08:04Can you imagine you grew grain and then had a dedicated building to store it to feed your
08:09animals for the rest of the year?
08:11Crazy.
08:12We just go to the mill and buy big sacks of it and they give it to us.
08:16Ooh.
08:17Looks pretty solid.
08:19Oh, I don't, I think all the walls got to go on the inside.
08:23Mm-hmm.
08:24I would like to salvage the wood, though.
08:25It's good.
08:26Like...
08:27Mm-hmm.
08:28I'd keep the walls in place while it's moved so the structure holds together.
08:32Well, what do you think?
08:35I really like it.
08:37I definitely want to redo the doors and windows just because a French cottage is very light.
08:42It's very airy.
08:43Awesome.
08:44Our plan for Shelby's dream workspace is to transform this antique granary into a unique
08:50one-stop shop for all things goat.
08:53First, we'll move the structure to Shelby's farm, then swap out the old exterior siding
08:58and remove the interior walls to make the building feel bright and welcoming.
09:03We'll give Shelby space to both craft her handmade products and showcase them in style.
09:08A boiler will keep the temperature consistent over long South Dakota winters and will create
09:13an eye-catching sign to draw folks in.
09:16The challenge is going to be moving the old granary all the way to Shelby's farm without
09:20damaging it, and then making sure the final space checks all the boxes on Shelby's wishlist.
09:27And then I think the next question is, how do we move it?
09:32It's really tall.
09:33Let me think about that.
09:34I don't know the legal height limit on the freeway, but I'm pretty sure this exceeds it.
09:38It's under this height.
09:41Before we can give the granary a new home, we've got to make sure there's a rock solid
09:45place to plant it.
09:47And that starts with a new foundation.
09:49First step, Tanner's digging out the footprint.
09:53Next, some of Shelby's friends help lay out the concrete forms.
09:56We're including a crawl space for pipes and wiring, and a bonus area out back.
10:01It'll be perfect for an outdoor deck, but even better if Shelby decides to expand her
10:06growing business down the line.
10:08We're pouring our concrete into insulated concrete forms that'll provide a proper frost-protected
10:15foundation.
10:17Finally, the site is ready for the granary.
10:20But now comes the tricky part, actually getting the granary to the site.
10:24The challenge is, the building itself is 18 feet tall.
10:28By the time I put it on my three-foot-tall trailer, I can't drive down the road with
10:32that.
10:33It'll put me about seven feet over the legal height limit of 14 feet.
10:38So in order to make it moveable, we're cutting off every nail that holds the roof down.
10:47And today, we're going to pick the roof off of the building and transport each section on
10:53two different trailers.
10:54Good, isn't it?
10:55The next step is its journey west.
10:58We're hauling this wide load 11 miles, first down a section of interstate, and then down
11:04a bumpy country road.
11:06So we made these custom plates that bolt to the building.
11:13This hole or this picking eye on this custom bracket is going to allow the chain to come
11:18up past this.
11:20We don't want to damage the roof or any of the roof structure.
11:23So we have to pick this outboard of the roof.
11:28I also fabricated a beam that extends over the length of the roof and welded mounts to
11:34it for chains that attach to the roof brackets.
11:41Kathy, I reckon this roof weighs about 6,000 pounds.
11:48Last time we picked something that was heavy, your welds didn't hold.
11:54Well, that's not ideal.
11:57It's going to be fine.
11:59I bet you a super burrito manadero that my welds hold.
12:04Yeah, with everything.
12:05Yeah, yeah, but that means when they hold you have to buy me the same thing.
12:09Uh-huh.
12:10All right.
12:11Get one weld, drop a big tank.
12:15Meh.
12:17You're on that corner, I'm on this corner.
12:19Okay.
12:20Going up.
12:22All jokes aside, watch those plates.
12:24If we drop this old granary, it won't bounce.
12:27It'll bust open like a sad pile of rustic firewood.
12:31It tends to go out a little bit.
12:34And now that the pressure's really on, it's time to raise the roof.
12:48Oh, oh, whoa.
12:50Hold up!
12:51We're stuck on something!
12:53Hold up!
12:54Looks like we're hung up on the front.
13:08And I got a board on the inside connected to the rafters.
13:14That much tension could break my weld, but at this point, I gotta go for it.
13:22I think if you keep pulling straight up, it'll come loose.
13:33I'm clear, I'm up!
13:34I'm clear.
13:35Nice job, boys.
13:37Go ahead and start backing up.
13:40Nice and easy.
13:53Good lord, this thing is wide.
13:56All right, let's go down real easy.
13:58Down?
13:59Down.
14:00Down!
14:06Okay.
14:09That went awesome.
14:10What do you know?
14:11Looks like my weld's held up.
14:13And Dustin owes me a burrito.
14:18Okay.
14:21The next step for us is to pick the actual building up.
14:24So in order to do that, it's so wide and heavy, I bet it's close to 10,000 pounds.
14:33We're using two telehandlers to pick it up, and the margin for error here is razor thin.
14:41Whoa, you're gonna roll that way, you're gonna roll that way.
14:46If the machines aren't synced perfectly, if the weight shifts unevenly, that means splintering
14:52timbers, warped walls, or a building that'll never sit square again.
14:56How's it look?
14:57I look pretty good.
14:59Okay.
15:00Now we'll back in my trailer and turn this building into a temporary mobile home.
15:07Am I close?
15:09You're close.
15:12Touchdown!
15:15All right.
15:18So we should be just under our legal height.
15:21We're allowed 14, we're 12-8.
15:25We're gonna be real careful, go nice and slow.
15:27But she's stable, and we'll get her strapped down, and we're gonna head up the road.
15:3511 miles doesn't seem far, but when you're hauling a historic, century-old structure that
15:44you've just sliced in half to the edge of the Wyoming border, you have to take things slow.
15:49How are you feeling, Dustin?
15:52Really wide.
15:53Copy that.
15:55Yeah, we'll just ride the right lane the best we can and just take her easy.
16:03Thank goodness I'm not on granary moving day.
16:06That sounds really stressful.
16:08Instead I'm focusing on the design features that'll help make Shelby's business stand out.
16:12I'm meeting with Tim, a local sign maker.
16:16I drive by a lot of Tim's signs every day.
16:20He would be the perfect person to make it for her, because he makes everything in house, and is local, and loves to do stuff around town.
16:28And that's exactly what she does.
16:30Hi.
16:31Hello.
16:32We spoke a little bit on the phone in regards to my client, Shelby Lund.
16:41We're making her a workshop and a storefront on her farm in order for her to sell soaps
16:48and candles and all sorts of things out of the milk from her goats.
16:52So what name will appear on the sign?
16:55Lund Valley Farm.
16:57So this is her current standing logo.
16:59Okay.
17:00Would you be interested in partaking in the production process?
17:04Absolutely, yes.
17:05I do paint, but I've never done something on this scale, so I'd love to learn something.
17:09That's good.
17:10Excellent.
17:11Lovely.
17:12All right.
17:13I think that's all I need to know.
17:14Okay.
17:15So you'll hear from me soon.
17:16His shop is so horrible.
17:27So we made it off the interstate.
17:29I'm glad that portion is done, but now we're on the dirt road on the way to Shelby's house.
17:37I'm trying not to take out any mailboxes, either.
17:46Okay.
17:47Come right a little bit with the wheels.
17:50Slow is smooth.
17:51Smooth is fast.
17:52We're approaching Shelby's farm.
17:55Stop it right here, fellas.
17:59The next challenge is threading this wide load through Shelby's gate without damaging the
18:06gate or the granary.
18:09So we're right at 19 wide.
18:13I'm 18 wide.
18:14Okay, so I'm 16, but we need to get the angle of our turn just right.
18:19If we come in too steep or too shallow, we're going to do some damage.
18:23The two things we're going to want to watch is this communications box right on the corner
18:27and the birdhouses.
18:28Those are her father made those birdhouses.
18:30Let's do it.
18:33Here I go.
18:35How's my front tire?
18:36You can go more.
18:39Okay, now turn it.
18:43It's tight.
18:48All right, buddy.
18:49You made it to the gate.
18:51That was the easy part.
18:52Now comes the nail-biter.
18:54I'm a little tighter than that.
18:56I think you are going to be tighter than that.
19:00The roof is two feet wider, so if Dustin drifts even a little bit,
19:04we might be in for some unplanned renovations.
19:08Hard left.
19:10Oh, you got to go that way a bunch.
19:15Yeah, I'm going to hit.
19:17Yeah, you're going to hit me.
19:24You can come this way a little bit.
19:25Cappy side of here.
19:27Go real slow.
19:28Real, real slow.
19:30Jeez, look at this.
19:31This is how much space he's got.
19:35I'm good.
19:36I'm clear on my side.
19:40Well done, boys.
19:42Dude, six.
19:44Oh, I had six on my side.
19:46That's amazing.
19:48We made it through.
19:49Nothing touched.
19:50No birdhouses, no gates, anything.
19:54Let's get it on the foundation.
19:59We have to pick up the building.
20:01I have to pull the trailer out from underneath it.
20:04And Ruby has to extend while Dustin retracts and moves the building over and sets it down.
20:12Why don't you put a little pressure on it?
20:27So it's right at your tipping weight.
20:29I was watching your tires.
20:30I thought so.
20:31Yeah.
20:32So we'll be real careful with that.
20:34This makes me nervous.
20:36My rear wheels are barely touching the ground right now.
20:40Because when you're boomed out this far with 10,000 pounds, you can teeter easy.
20:47If the telehandler tips, not only will the granary get smashed, but we'll also crack the foundation it's sitting on and put the telehandler boom out of commission.
20:57Tipping is not encouraged.
20:59I don't like this.
21:05Okay, Ruby, you drive forward and Dustin start retracting.
21:14Okay, let's lower it.
21:17Okay, both at the same time.
21:19I wish I can tell you that she drops right into place, but the reality is it goes something like this.
21:24Still gotta go this way eight inches.
21:27Okay, why don't you back out.
21:28Go ahead and go up.
21:29So you're gonna retract and you're gonna extend.
21:31We're really close.
21:32That way.
21:33Okay, and then you flop to that corner.
21:34Okay, you go down.
21:35That's a lot of mental gymnastics today.
21:36I'm gonna have you come to this corner.
21:37So close.
21:38You're gonna bump to that corner.
21:39Stand by.
21:40My brain hurts.
21:41Right?
21:42No problem.
21:44Okay.
21:45Retract.
21:47It's beautiful, boys.
21:48Beautiful.
21:49And just like that, 100-year-old building, brand new home.
21:52So the last piece of this puzzle is putting the lid back on our pot.
21:59But this is definitely a heavy, heavy lid.
22:03Daddy.
22:04This is really hard to line up because it has to be square to the building and front and back, left and right.
22:11It's hard when everyone's tired.
22:13We've been up since four this morning.
22:15Just watch your fingers and your head.
22:17It's a big day.
22:22All right, we're down.
22:23Yo, Tiffo.
22:24Nice driving, amigo.
22:26So big day yesterday.
22:39We got the apothecary all the way down to Shelby's farm.
22:42Today we're kicking off the renovation, starting with stripping off the old exterior siding.
22:47100-plus years of South Dakota weather have really taken its toll.
22:51We're also removing the inside walls, but luckily that wood's in good shape.
22:55And Sprout wants to save it for Shelby.
22:58I'm just excited that we can take this piece of history that has been around Spearfish for so long
23:02and repurpose it into this thing for Shelby and Derek.
23:05Turns out I'm not the only one who had an eye for this old granary.
23:09Some neighbors are just as fired up about saving the slice of history than showed up to lend a hand.
23:14Morning, fellas.
23:16Clark and Jackson, thanks for coming.
23:18So we're going to go ahead and strip all the exterior siding off.
23:21Alex did want us to save two good boards from the outside for a project she's working on for Shelby.
23:26The inside, however, we want to repurpose all that big fat one-by into some shelves for Shelby's stuff.
23:33I'm going to go get some tools.
23:40All right.
23:45It's easy.
23:48We're going to be done by noon.
23:51You know, we grew up across the creek in Spearfish from this building.
23:55So it's really nice to be able to help Cappy, Sprout, give this another life.
24:01Very cool.
24:05While Dustin and David tackle the inside walls, Sprout checks on the condition of the boards and finds a surprise.
24:12Oh, my gosh.
24:15There's writing on here.
24:171906.
24:19So this board is over, like, 120 years old.
24:23Wow.
24:28It doesn't look like much now, but I can see the goat apothecary is shaping up to be something really special.
24:33Just give me a few more days.
24:36I've got an idea to make this build extra special for Shelby.
24:39But I need Derek's help.
24:40Hello.
24:41Hey, Alex.
24:42How are you?
24:43Doing good.
24:44How are you?
24:45Good.
24:46I was just wondering if I could get some pictures from you of Shelby and her dad.
24:49I'm hoping that I can sneak them in the project somewhere.
24:50Absolutely.
24:51Yeah, we have a ton of them I could round up.
24:53She'd love that.
24:54That'd be great.
24:55Awesome.
24:56Well, I don't want her to see me, so I should jet.
24:58All right.
24:59Cool.
25:00Thanks, Alex.
25:01Bye.
25:02Bye.
25:03Bye.
25:04Bye.
25:05Bye.
25:06Bye.
25:07Bye.
25:08Bye.
25:09Bye.
25:10Bye.
25:11Bye.
25:13Bye.
25:14Bye.
25:15Bye.
25:16Bye.
25:17Bye.
25:18Bye.
25:19Bye.
25:20I'm at the sign shop with Tim, and he has one more step that he wants some help with,
25:31so I'm excited to learn something new.
25:34Hello.
25:35Hi, Alex.
25:39Is this our sign?
25:40Here it is.
25:41It looks so good.
25:43So I enhanced some of it, made the letters a little bit bolder, added full color on it.
25:49The edges of the letters are gilded in 23-carat gold leaf, which is what you're going to be
25:54doing on the ribbon.
25:55Oh, cool.
25:57You made a ribbon sign, too.
25:58I'm excited.
25:59Let's go over here, and I'll explain a little bit about gold leaf to you.
26:03Okay.
26:04I want you to hold this and rub it between your fingers.
26:07Oh, wow.
26:08It's so fragile.
26:09Do that.
26:10Just get a handful.
26:11Yeah.
26:12It's three millionths of an inch thick.
26:13It just disappears.
26:14Yeah, and then it's gone.
26:15All right.
26:16Now we're ready to start gilding, so why don't you bring your stool over.
26:19Hey, Gus.
26:20What's up, boys?
26:21I brought you some lumber.
26:22Hey.
26:23Good morning.
26:24Sweet.
26:25That's perfect timing.
26:26It's going to be the cutest little deck ever.
26:27First step to making a cute little deck, hauling some seriously heavy beams.
26:42Good thing my crew's got clever ideas, and a big piece of machinery that makes us look
26:49strong.
26:50Why don't you go get the tally, and we'll just slide it onto the tally.
26:52We can slide it onto the tally, too.
26:53I like that.
26:54This is a technique that's been used.
26:56The Egyptians used it.
26:57When you see all the artifacts, they're gilded in gold leaf.
27:00Oh, wow.
27:01This is the very same thing that we're doing right now.
27:05We're off and running, building the deck.
27:08When I pull this up, the gold will only stick to where I've got glue painted.
27:13So go ahead and pull a sheet off of there, and do just what I did.
27:21And lift your sheet up.
27:22Terrific.
27:25Very good.
27:26That's fabulous.
27:27Okay.
27:28Here's where Sprouts got me beat.
27:31She can handle both power tools and fine design detail.
27:36So I stick to what I know, making the pieces fit together.
27:39Because when it comes to the sparkle, that's all her.
27:43Terrific.
27:44I'm going to grab you another book, and we'll keep going.
27:46Only 11 more letters to go.
28:03Right there.
28:05So we just picked up our custom door that we had made for Shelby and Derek's project.
28:10Spray foam insulation's done, electricians are done, and siding gets delivered today.
28:15Yeah, here in the next day or so, we'll be ready for paint.
28:19But I don't want Shelby and Derek seeing our progress and spoiling the surprise.
28:23So I managed to convince them to spend a few days kicking back at our property at Shortgrass for a well-deserved getaway.
28:33Hey, chickens!
28:35Here, I have food.
28:37But Shelby would only leave her animals if Alex stepped in to take care of them.
28:40Building all sheeted up, looking good.
28:47Oh yeah!
28:49First item on the to-do list, install the door.
28:53This beauty comes with side lights, these skinny little windows on each side of the door, which will add a little extra light into the space.
29:00Oh, nice!
29:05So I like how it looks.
29:06I like it's a little wider, and then these aren't too overbearing.
29:09Like, they're nice, clean glass.
29:10We didn't want to do any patterned glass.
29:12That is a sharp-looking door.
29:13I can see that sign now.
29:15London Valley Farm.
29:17Cool.
29:19Next step is siding.
29:22So we went with a traditional look.
29:26This stuff is tough as nails and should have no problem standing up to our crazy South Dakota weather.
29:31This is actually 70% fly ash.
29:35It's basically a byproduct from the mining industry.
29:38So they take that, they mix it with a polymer glue, press it together, and this woodgrain texture is actually embossed in the wood.
29:44Now, it has a different finish on each side, but I don't know which side Sprout wants out.
29:54Hello?
29:55Quick question for you.
29:56The siding came this morning.
29:58Do you want a smooth side, or do you want a wood-textured side?
30:02I want wood-textured side out just because of, like, the overall aesthetic of the build.
30:08Cool.
30:09Let's do that.
30:10Bye, love you.
30:11Love you.
30:14Hello.
30:15Hey, how are you, Sprout?
30:16Good.
30:17Nice to see you again.
30:18Yes, nice to see you again.
30:19I hear you got some boards for us.
30:20Yes.
30:21So, I was hoping that we could turn them into some pieces I could use for some shelving.
30:25Oh, cool.
30:26Yeah, they're in good shape.
30:27There are a few with some nails in them.
30:29We'll get those pulled out, no problem.
30:30Okay.
30:31So, are you wanting any of them cut, or just surfaced?
30:33Just surfaced.
30:34Okay.
30:37Thank you so much.
30:38We'll let you know.
30:44So, Ruby and I are working on siding the front of the apothecary building.
30:59When you install siding, if you're going to do it yourself, every three or four courses, throw a level on it and make sure you're not doing this.
31:09Because over the course of a 16-foot tall building, if you're off a sixteenth of an inch over that far, literally it starts to do this.
31:19And you get up to the top and your pieces are visibly slanted.
31:22It's not good.
31:24Well, we're looking good on that.
31:27Oh, there's Dustin.
31:29Yeah, I think let's back him right up to the deck.
31:31Dustin's worked his fair share of old floors, and today he brought all his tools to give Shelby's boards a proper facelift.
31:42I'm a one-man job, and I love it.
31:46We're sanding off a century's worth of grain and grime, so this building can start a fresh chapter in its old story.
31:52I'm going to leave a little character in it.
32:00I'm not going to sand all the way, but it'll look really nice.
32:04It'll look fairly new.
32:06I'm not going to land it, but I'm not going to land it on theCraft banner.
32:27Oh, bro!!
32:29Hey!
32:30Holy crap!!
32:32That's just two cuts that is
32:35Bananas that that was what was underneath it. Oh, yeah, it's not in the same room. This is so cool, dude
32:42You've been working hard brother. Take a break before you finish up. Yep
32:45amazing
32:56Oh, that chip
33:02I'm getting to the build side a little bit early to take care of Shelby's farm animals
33:20They're crazy while Shelby and Derek have a little bit of relaxation time at short grass
33:24I have a long list of things. I have to make sure are done. I need to feed the goats
33:32Hello, oh my no, that's not happening right now
33:42Everyone's head make sure that they have enough water
33:48Make sure the horses are brushed oh hi
33:53It sure is beautiful out here, but smells a bit stronger than I thought it would
34:02I need to feed the chickens
34:06Oh, hi ducks and I need to let the puppies out
34:18Feed Gus there you go such a diva, but that's okay. Cappy is too
34:25Y'all poop a lot. I promise it's not food
34:30Wow, I really have a new appreciation for what Shelby does every day. It's a lot of hard work
34:37What
34:39Time to finish transforming this granary into a one-of-a-kind workshop and bring Shelby back home where she belongs
34:46The inside walls are getting a coat of whitewash which will give them a classic French sort of farmhouse charm
34:52Whoo smells like progress. Yeah. Oh, dude. That looks so good. Yeah, it brings it up quite a bit
34:59It's just great. I think she's gonna love it. Awesome. Sweet. Thank you. Appreciate it
35:04The whitewash dries in no time and David jumps right into the install of the custom shelves sprout designed
35:15So Alex wanted to put shelves in here from the salvaged wall we took out
35:22She took them and cleaned them up finished them brought them back and she wants me to install them in here
35:34She has great vision
35:36Shelby said that the temperature is extra important for making her products
35:40So we're also installing a wood-burning boiler that'll pump warm water through the radiators in the apothecary during the snowy winter months
35:49real slow
35:50Okay, perfect
35:52They already burned wood on the property. They have wood stoves. This is just an easy transition to have a high-tech
35:58Unit that they can feed once a day that'll keep consistent heat and Shelby's workspace and her shop. This is gonna be a game-changer for them
36:11Now for the last piece of the puzzle
36:14Shelby told us that her dad was the inspiration behind starting this farm and her business
36:20So we need to cut here
36:23Chop this guy off. I know how strong that bond can be
36:31Since her dad is no longer here. I wanted to turn this old exterior siding into a special surprise for Shelby
36:37To honor him and to keep his spirit close
36:42Okay, let's go puppy
36:55It's a gorgeous day in our little corner of South Dakota
36:59And after getting all the final bits and pieces into place
37:02It's time to bring Shelby and Derek back to the space that we've poured all our love into
37:08I'm so excited. It looks so good in here. I think you knocked it out of the park on this one. This is very cool. Thanks
37:14Awesome. I think I hear their truck. All right. Well, I'm ready if you're good to go and get Michelle be Derek. Oh, thanks, girl
37:22All right, no peeking just keep your eyes down
37:29Perfect so excited can't hardly take it
37:34Okay, how are we feeling anxious nervous? Yeah, thank you excited kind of like I'm gonna throw up
37:50Well, don't do that
37:53All right, should we put them out of their misery and let them turn around and see yes, okay in three two one
37:59Oh my god
38:13Yeah, so the building itself had a former life we found writing inside the building from 1906
38:19On some of the boards inside so it's 120 years old
38:22It was a granary and it was part of a farm on the west side of spearfish
38:26So we ended up moving it down the road and then we set her down on its new home. Awesome. It's so heartwarming that the history of
38:34Spearfish is still gonna continue on on our property
38:38Where did you get the sign?
38:40I worked with a sign maker in town and we worked with the original design on the soaps and all of your products
38:48So it still has that same look. Yeah, it's perfect. This sign that's on the building is
38:53bigger and
38:55So eye-catching compared to the sign that I have
39:00It's definitely a scale up. Yeah pops a little more. Yeah
39:04All right, would you like to head inside? Yes, we would go for it after you. It's all you. Oh my gosh
39:10Here we go
39:12Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god, it's beautiful
39:19Wow
39:22Oh my god, everything looks so perfect
39:26Chills
39:28My goodness, it just all looks so good. Wow
39:32It's so perfect guys
39:46Glad you like it. Yeah. Oh, this is so pretty
39:51When I walked in one of the first things I noticed was a picture of my dad and I
39:58Don't want to cry, but yeah, it was beautiful
40:02That's a great picture
40:04I
40:05Actually made that frame from the original siding on the building. It's just a little surprise for you both
40:10I really wanted the inside to feel like an elegant antique and so in order to do that
40:17We left most of the original wall. So these are the real like interior laws that we just whitewashed and then in terms of
40:25Separation it's not like a rope that says don't come past you it's just for employees only
40:32But it's a visual separation from the storefront to the workshop
40:37Yeah, it's just so perfect
40:39We had the floors refinished
40:41We put in an air conditioner
40:43And we also installed an exterior wood boiler so you have hydronic heat in here to keep everything nice and warm in the wintertime
40:50That's amazing
40:52Yeah, there's a lot of steps involved to take it from the original granary and turn it into this
40:57Goat apothecary
40:59The goat apothecary perfect
41:02Yeah, it is amazing
41:04Well to say thank you and for something special
41:07Sprout, I made you your own goat soap
41:10Oh my gosh
41:12Yes, sprouts goat soap
41:14And that's gonna be your original one for Lund Valley Farm
41:18Oh I love it, thank you so much
41:20That's so cool
41:21Oh my gosh, thank you
41:22And then for you Cappy
41:24Isn't that beautiful? It has your face on it
41:29Oh my gosh
41:31Cappy's noggin' nectar
41:34That's gonna do wonders
41:36No kidding
41:37And you can also use it as your beard oil
41:39It's a win-win all around
41:41I love it
41:42Yeah
41:43We'll let you guys get back to it
41:44Thank you for this very much
41:45Thank you guys
41:46Appreciate it
41:47Thank you so much
41:48You guys are
41:49Thank you Sprout
41:50You guys are awesome
41:51You guys are so amazing
41:52Thanks guys
41:53Thanks
41:54When people come onto the property and come to the shop
41:58I just want them to have the whole experience of the farm
42:02And the fact Alex and Cappy did capture that
42:05They stepped up and it's amazing
42:08In this building, every board, every shelf, it all has a story
42:14And it's part of our history here
42:16And so we just get to add on to that chapter
42:20And continue and make new memories
42:23And it's gonna be wonderful
42:25I'll hand over a soap and you have to figure out what the scent is
42:38Cinnamon oatmeal
42:39It's just vanilla but okay
42:42This is like a favorite one of mine
42:44Slushies?
42:45No
42:46After the rain
42:47Good lord
42:48Alright
42:49Man musk
42:50Don't call it that
42:51Tobacco and bay leaf
42:52That's pretty close
42:54He he he he
42:55He he he
42:56lighting
42:57They're
43:02You
43:16My
