00:01We're looking to transform this backyard.
00:03This build's really about us spending time together.
00:06OK.
00:07I like the idea of a hot tub.
00:08What can we do to make it fun?
00:10Dude, the bottom of the drum.
00:13Oh, yeah.
00:15I guarantee it's the first time anybody in the world
00:18has done what you're doing.
00:19This is scary.
00:21What's on your face?
00:22Concrete.
00:25That'd be a dumb way to die.
00:26I don't want to be a pancake.
00:28Oh, my God, it looks amazing.
00:30One, two, three.
00:32Oh, my gosh.
00:35Making it happen today.
00:38My given name is Jared Cappy.
00:41But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:44This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:45Everyone clear?
00:46I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:50Woo-hoo!
00:51But a few years ago, I teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
00:54Whoa.
00:55It looks so good in here.
00:57We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:00Whoa!
01:02I'm awake now.
01:03What if we did use a plane?
01:04Wait, really?
01:05All right, Alex.
01:06It's all yours.
01:08Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:09Oh, my God.
01:11It's so amazing.
01:13And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:15Love you, man.
01:16I love you.
01:16Oh, my gosh.
01:17Look it, look it, look it.
01:18But the best part...
01:19Oh!
01:20Oh!
01:20Oh!
01:21Oh!
01:22Oh!
01:22we get to do it together.
01:36Summers don't last long in South Dakota, so when Sprout and I get a chance to hop on
01:42the bike, we take it, and it's the perfect way to visit our new clients.
01:50Paul and Tracy are the parents of Sprout's friend, Sophia, and they also love motorcycles.
01:56Sophia's a year ahead of Sprout in school, so she's off to college soon, which means Paul
02:01and Tracy are about to be empty nesters.
02:05I don't know what kind of build they've got in mind, but I do know this, I'm going to soak
02:10up every second I get with Sprout before it's her turn to fly the coop.
02:18Well, hello, sir.
02:29Man, that is a pretty bike.
02:33Shiny.
02:34Wow.
02:35Yeah, just getting her ready to go out for a ride with Tracy in a little while.
02:38Nice, yeah, our first ride today, too.
02:39Yeah.
02:40Awesome.
02:41I'm super excited to see what we have in store.
02:42Should we go back and take a look?
02:44Yes.
02:45That blue is awesome, dude.
02:47Tracy, they're here.
02:49Hey, Cap.
02:50Hey, Alex.
02:51Hello, Miss Tracy.
02:52This is the cutest backyard.
02:53How are you?
02:54Good.
02:55How are you?
02:56Good.
02:57Well, yeah, so Sophia graduated this year.
02:58Yes, she did.
02:59I got a year, so tell me what it feels like.
03:01It's a little tough.
03:02You're going to have all the emotions hit you at one time.
03:07We have two kids.
03:09Jacob is a junior in college, and Sophia just graduated from high school, and we are becoming
03:17empty nesters.
03:18And it's like, where have the last 20 years gone?
03:22You're almost there.
03:23Tell me a story.
03:24I don't know much other than what Sophia told Alex.
03:27Yeah, I was told that the backyard could use some love.
03:30We're looking to transform this backyard into a fun place to hang out with each other.
03:37This build's really about us spending time together.
03:41Although we love each other very much, the time isn't always there for that one-on-one
03:46time, so we're looking for some place to connect.
03:51We are West Coast originally, so something with water in it.
03:56You always had access to water.
03:57Anything for relaxation, definitely.
04:01So what was this fenced-off area here?
04:04Is that an old garden?
04:05It is an old garden, but as we both got busier and busier with our kids, we kind of just let
04:12it go.
04:13I want a smaller space that I can manage myself.
04:17Sure.
04:18Okay, so now we got a little patio.
04:19That's a cute little patio.
04:20It'd be really nice to extend that hangout space to invite friends over.
04:26Yeah, I see you got custom slopage on your concrete there.
04:29It's buckled over the ears.
04:31Not a super usable space.
04:35All right.
04:36Is there anything else that you're looking for?
04:37I just really would like to be surprised.
04:40Okay.
04:41I'm quite excited.
04:42Good.
04:43Cool.
04:44That's all I got for questions, kiddo.
04:45Yeah, if it's all right, I'd love it if we could stay for a little while and just see what
04:49we're working with.
04:50I know there's a shiny bike out there for you.
04:53You guys take as long as you like.
04:55Awesome.
04:56Space is all yours.
04:57We're out of here.
04:58Awesome.
05:00Have a good ride up the canyon.
05:01Okay.
05:02See you guys.
05:03Sure.
05:04See ya.
05:05A little shady spot.
05:06Yeah.
05:07Okay.
05:08We've got two empty nesters who want to reconnect and not a lot of space to work with.
05:18Mm-hmm.
05:19We know that they like the element of relaxation because they haven't really had a chance to
05:24allocate much time for that in the past, what, 20 years?
05:27Kids ruin everything, dude.
05:29Hey.
05:30We also need a space that has something with water.
05:34If the goal is relaxation, I like the idea of a hot tub thinking about just end of the
05:39day, relaxing.
05:40But what can we do that's interesting?
05:42What can we do to make it fun?
05:47What if we...
05:49Dude, the bottom of the drum of the beehive.
05:52Oh, yeah.
05:53That is so beautiful.
05:55A couple of years back, we turned an old concrete mixing drum into a beehive hangout for
06:02our friend Donovan and his family.
06:04Oh, my gosh.
06:05But we didn't use the bottom of the drum.
06:08It's eight foot in diameter.
06:10That's easily four people.
06:11I like that.
06:12So thinking about the drum, we need a seat inside it and then maybe something to like
06:17protect the rim.
06:18It'd be nice to have a little bit of a shelf around the top.
06:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:22Around the top.
06:23I think we could bring this concrete drum full circle.
06:25I know a guy who handcrafts really unique high-end concrete furniture.
06:29Let me make a call about that one.
06:30Okay.
06:31But supporting it, because this thing is going to weigh eight, ten thousand pounds, that's
06:36including the people, any concrete fixtures, and the water inside.
06:41Mm-hmm.
06:42So to support it, I think we're going to need a pretty substantial column that will concrete
06:46in the ground for sure.
06:47What about the heat source?
06:49I can put fire under it.
06:51Wait, like actual fire?
06:52Yeah.
06:53Where would we get that from?
06:54Well, I know we can use natural gas.
06:56Right.
06:57I don't have a burner solution.
07:01Okay.
07:02Let me think about that.
07:04We're also going to need a custom deck for easy access to the tub.
07:08Okay.
07:09And then we also need to contain the garden ones.
07:14So let's do a couple little raised beds or something.
07:17Yes.
07:18The plan is to build Paul and Tracy, a one-of-a-kind backyard oasis with a standout centerpiece.
07:25To do this, we're transforming the base of our concrete drum into a truly original hot tub,
07:32complete with the unique concrete fixtures for a footrest, seating, and shelving.
07:37We'll mount the tub on a support column that'll also house a customized burner.
07:42We'll surround it with a tailored deck and privacy wall and add low-maintenance garden boxes for Tracy.
07:48Finally, we'll redo and expand the crumbling concrete patio.
07:53Easier said than done, though.
07:55Pulling all this off in this tight backyard space is going to take some serious creativity and a whole lot of hustle.
08:02I love it.
08:03It'll be really exciting.
08:05Okay.
08:06We can't wait to get started.
08:08I'm dropping Sprout off at Granny Flats to work on some personal touches for Paul and Tracy.
08:14That's also where the concrete drum base ended up.
08:17So I'll take that over to my master welding buddy Rodney's shop to start fabricating the parts we need.
08:23Ready for a name?
08:24Yep.
08:25I'm going to need a bigger ride for that job, though.
08:35So we've got the bottom portion of this concrete drum in the back of the truck.
08:39We actually took it away from Rodney's.
08:41What are the chances you still have the bottom of that concrete drum?
08:46Oh, now you want it?
08:48We didn't end up using it for that build.
08:50So this morning, we're bringing it back to Rodney's shop.
08:53It's sort of like a bad penny for him.
08:55Like, he keeps turning up.
09:03What?
09:06You can take that away from my place.
09:09I swear, last time.
09:10Okay.
09:12I'll walk you through it.
09:13Can you see?
09:14Yeah.
09:15So I've got a real plan this time.
09:16It's not in writing or anything, but I have a real plan.
09:19As long as I get it on paper or something.
09:21A napkin.
09:22How about a drawing?
09:23So it's a hot tub.
09:24Okay.
09:25We'll have a central support column.
09:27Cool.
09:28But there will be a burner in here that heats this thing up.
09:33What I'd like you guys to fabricate is we're going to have a plate like this that the drum sits on, right?
09:42And we need some brackets made that's going to support a cast concrete edge, like a lip.
09:48And then inside the drum, we're going to do another bracket, and there's going to be a seat.
09:55Okay.
09:56So can we unload it?
09:57For the last time.
09:58Nice promise.
09:59Pinky promise.
10:00Last time.
10:01Last time.
10:02Okay.
10:03Thanks, dude.
10:04There you go.
10:05That's a good pick.
10:06All right.
10:07Fantastic.
10:08Awesome.
10:09Cool.
10:10Thank you guys.
10:11Appreciate it.
10:12Well, it's quite the project, ain't it?
10:13Yeah, it is.
10:14Rodney and his brother Austin jumped right to work removing the old concrete mixing blades
10:31and fabricating the brackets that will support the concrete fixtures.
10:42So I'm on my way over to Paul and Tracy's place.
10:47Paul wanted to help get us started, so him and a couple of buddies tore out the old concrete pad and hauled it away.
10:53I love it when clients want to jump in and get their hands dirty.
10:56And now we're going to drill a three-foot diameter hole five feet deep, and that's going to have the pipe centered in it,
11:02and that's what's going to support our new hot tub.
11:11So, kiddo, hold me on the fence there.
11:14Okay.
11:15So we've got four-footed deck, give or take.
11:18Right.
11:19And we've got eight-footed tub, which brings us to the 12-foot spot.
11:23And then we've got another four-foot, and this is where the deck ends.
11:27Yep, I think it works.
11:28Okay.
11:29I'll mark our spot, you go jump in the skid steer.
11:32Okay.
11:33Cool.
11:34That thing's huge.
11:49So if one can't tell by the look on my face, I'm a little stressed.
11:55Just because this is a bigger auger, it's three-foot in diameter, which is a lot bigger than the ones I've used in general.
12:07So we're really trying to make sure that we do this right the first time.
12:10So, yeah, hopefully this goes well.
12:13Slow is smooth.
12:15Smooth is fast.
12:22Okay, kid, so we're going right for this blue stake.
12:24Center line, please.
12:27Okay, go ahead and go right down for the tip of my stake.
12:30Boom.
12:31Okay.
12:32So you've used that little one before, the 12-incher.
12:35This one takes way more power.
12:37So the challenge with that is you need to throttle this guy almost all the way up, but that also makes your controls...
12:44Super touchy.
12:45Real touchy.
12:46Because you have more hydraulic fluid flowing through, so.
12:48Okay.
12:49All right, good?
12:50Okay.
12:51Okay.
12:52Let's drill a hole, kid.
12:54This is a much bigger auger than Alex is used to working on.
13:01Yep.
13:02Yep.
13:03Yep, this folds in.
13:04So I'm glad she's nervous.
13:08There you go.
13:10Now all she has to do is prove to herself that she's got this.
13:15There you go.
13:22I'm going to have you try to pull some out.
13:25Look at that chocolate cake.
13:27Ooh.
13:28It's so satisfying.
13:31Love it.
13:32All right, kiddo.
13:38I'm headed to my buddy Kent's place because he said he has a pipe that might work for the big hot tub support car.
13:45We're going to take it back to the shop and start fabricating it to accept the burner that's going to be a heat source for this hot tub.
13:54I never miss an opportunity to poke around a boneyard.
13:59There's some kinds of stuff back here.
14:00He's holding out on me.
14:03Look at all this stuff.
14:04I spend all day here.
14:06Shaker screens and all kinds of stuff.
14:08Hi, rabbit.
14:10Sorry.
14:11Just looking for treasures.
14:12Okie dokie.
14:19Good news, bad news.
14:20Good news, we're 20 inches across, which is great.
14:24Bad news is we're just over 14 feet.
14:26Now we only need about six feet for the build, but I need to get it back to my shop to cut it to size.
14:34Problem is I can't haul this length of pipe and the skid steer at the same time on the trailer.
14:40Hmm.
14:44All right, I know what I'm going to do.
14:49While Cappy's picking up pipes, I'm on the way to go pick up our client's daughter, Sophia.
14:55We know how much Paul and Tracy love taking motorcycle trips together.
14:59And Sophia has an Uncle Kevin who we've looped in because he has a motorcycle shop.
15:04And I'm hoping that we can find a part that we can transform into a handle that'll turn on the burner for the hot tub.
15:11I think that would be really cool.
15:16Hello.
15:17Hi.
15:26Yee-haw!
15:28Rodney's shop is a lot closer to here than my shop.
15:34So, I'm just going to take this to Rodney's shop.
15:38But he doesn't know I'm coming.
15:41Surprise!
15:42I'm so glad we can do this project for your mom and dad.
15:58I feel like they should have something special because, like, my mom's heart stuff.
16:04Oh, yeah. She had a hole in her heart, right?
16:07Yeah.
16:08It sounds like that it helped kind of bring everyone together and realize that, like, it's better to spend time when we have it, right?
16:16Yeah, which is probably a good thing as well.
16:19Yeah.
16:25Hey, girls. What's going on?
16:27Hi, Kevin.
16:29I was wondering if we could possibly root around here a little bit because we're looking for a part that we can use for a handle.
16:35Oh, I think we got some for you guys around here.
16:37Okay. Awesome.
16:39Help yourselves.
16:41We could start over here.
16:42Something like this might be fun.
16:44Maybe this could, like, turn something on.
16:47Oh, yeah. We could use that.
16:49Yeah, I'll make a pile over here.
16:51Okay.
16:52We can look over here.
16:54I think these were my dad's old handlebars.
16:56Cool.
16:57So, that's, like, something that he actually had.
16:59This is definitely in the pile.
17:01There's this.
17:03That's crazy.
17:07This must be a pile.
17:12I'm not too far from Rodney's shop with this pipe, but instead of driving all the way around the front,
17:17I'm taking a little shortcut, pioneer cross-country sort of thing going on.
17:22It'll be fine.
17:23It'll be fine.
17:32I've just got to squeeze past these unused parts of my old builds.
17:36Hi, buddy.
17:37Oh, man.
17:51What are you doing breaking this?
17:53I brought you some pipe.
17:54Here I am trying to get rid of something.
17:55And then you bring something else.
17:56I promise this won't stay for long.
17:57This is the support for the hot tub.
17:58Okay.
17:59This is my stem.
18:00But this we need to cut off about six feet.
18:16Okay.
18:17And then we need to cut out these holes.
18:19So, inside this pipe is the burner.
18:22I need to put three or four of these all the way around it so air can get in as this burner does its job.
18:28Sure.
18:29Awesome.
18:30Well, I'll just stash it out of the way for the moment.
18:31For some reason, I know this won't be the last time you drop something off.
18:34This is for you, Rodney.
18:37Thanks, buddy.
18:38You know, sometimes it helps if you have two people that do that.
18:40Oh, see?
18:41That's good.
18:42Oh, man.
18:43Okay.
18:44I'm done.
18:45Thanks, dude.
18:46We'll get to work.
18:59So, I'm on my way over to Granny Flats to meet my buddy, Brandon.
19:03He makes concrete furniture, beautiful pieces of art.
19:07His work is durable and treated to be completely waterproof.
19:11He is a concrete aficionado.
19:15He just drove up from Kansas to help with this build.
19:18And today, we're going to form up these three concrete rings that will be the footrest, the seat, and the rim for the hot tub.
19:26I'm really excited to see him.
19:28What's up, handsome?
19:30What's up?
19:31How's it going, brother?
19:32Dude, it's good to see you.
19:34Oh, man.
19:35Thank you so much for making the trip.
19:36Yeah, man.
19:37I'm so excited about this.
19:38I love the elegance of, like, your furniture and the stuff you do with sort of this, like, big, chunky, industrial metal tub.
19:45I guarantee it's the first time anybody in the world has done what you're doing.
19:48So, I'm happy to be a part of it.
19:51Yeah, I love it.
19:52For this hot tub project, we wanted to do something really elegant.
19:55So, we came up with these one-inch-thick concrete seating elements.
20:00So, right now, he's putting together these giant tables using three-quarter-inch plywood and leveled perfectly.
20:06You ready?
20:07Yep.
20:08The reason we do that is this stuff is all self-leveling, and then you don't want it to slope to one side or the other, because that will make your pour off.
20:15Looks good.
20:16And then the forms themselves get set on those tables, fragile little things.
20:21Uh-huh.
20:22Tape them down, silicone in place, let the silicone cure for at least six hours, so tomorrow we'll actually pour the pieces of concrete in the room.
20:33Hey, kiddo.
20:35Hello.
20:36Hi.
20:37What have you got?
20:38I have motorcycle parts from Uncle Kevin's shop.
20:43First, some handlebars off of Paul's old bike.
20:47Oh, that's fun.
20:48I like that.
20:49Disc brakes.
20:50A random red spring.
20:51That looked cool.
20:52Dude, fun.
20:53Yeah.
20:54A bike chain.
20:55I like that.
20:57Oh, I know what it is.
20:58You put your helmet on it.
20:59Dude, fun.
21:00And then I talked with Sophia a little bit, learned about Tracy, and how she had some hard
21:05heart issues and had heart surgery.
21:08She has a tattoo across the top of her chest that's a heart with wings out of it to hide the scars.
21:14Wow.
21:15Yeah.
21:16I was thinking that I could connect with Aunt Ren, and maybe we can think about some ideas for some sort of art piece that we can do to help honor that for her, because I think that's pretty important.
21:27Wow.
21:28Yeah.
21:29Good idea, kid.
21:30All right, well, let's get some supper, and we'll get at it tomorrow.
21:31Yeah.
21:32Nice.
21:35Rodney and I used his fancy robot arm torch to cut out the air holes in the hot tub support pipe.
21:51Now I want one of these.
21:54Then he welded the base plate for the hot tub on top of the pipe.
22:00Now we're cutting the pipe to the right length, and I'll hustle it over to Paul and Tracy's house for a big day on this build.
22:11Thanks, brother.
22:12Appreciate it.
22:13Talk to you soon.
22:14See ya.
22:15It's concrete pour day.
22:18We're using concrete to set the pipe into the whole sprout duck, and we're also going to pour the new patio.
22:25Paul and Tracy have agreed to stay at a friend's house so they stay out of our way, and then we can actually surprise them.
22:31That means we have to work a little quicker so we can get them back home.
22:37Today's going to be an awesome day.
22:38Of course, my concrete guys are never late.
22:40So we're going to get the mini off.
22:42We have to pick up the giant pipe in the back of the truck, rig it up with straps, and set it in the hole.
22:47So I'm making it happen.
22:55So a big challenge today is just getting everything done in time.
22:59We never want to make these concrete guys wait.
23:03These guys show up, especially with this giant pump.
23:06We want to be real respectful of what we're doing in the time that we said we'd be ready.
23:12So it's sort of all hands on deck to get this piece done.
23:16How are we doing?
23:17I think we're pretty good.
23:18Let's suck it in a little bit, Cap.
23:21Down.
23:23We're centered in the hole.
23:24I think it looks good.
23:25All right, toodaloo.
23:27Toodaloo!
23:28Thanks for coming!
23:32Now it's time to pour.
23:33And who amongst us will handle the pump truck's massive boom?
23:38All right, kid, we ready?
23:39I think so.
23:40That's what I'm talking about.
23:42I told you Alex never shrinks from a challenge.
23:45And I'm proud of her because she volunteered to wrestle with 10 tons of concrete.
23:49Here it comes.
23:55Probably need to be on this side of this route.
23:58It's a little bit of a rodeo, huh?
23:59Uh-huh.
24:00This is a lot more exciting than I would have imagined.
24:03This is scary.
24:05Do you remember what you told me the first time we poured concrete?
24:07That this is not on the list of dream jobs.
24:11Still isn't.
24:12I'm a bit winded because there is no way to stop it once it's coming.
24:16It's on your face.
24:17Concrete.
24:19So as one can see, I learned that lesson the hard way.
24:23The patio is done and while the guys smooth it out, I'm going to pour the concrete for our hot tub base.
24:33So we're pumping a little bit of concrete inside the tube and a little outside the tube because I want it to be equal pressure.
24:39I don't want to fill up the middle and have it wander.
24:42So as I'm going, I'm checking level.
24:45We have to make this perfect because the hot tub itself sits on top of this and full of water.
24:50It's going to weigh about 10,000 pounds.
24:53Ooh, that's looking nice.
24:54Today we're pouring the elegant concrete rings that'll be the foot rest, the seat, and the rim of our hot tub.
25:12Ready?
25:14There we go.
25:15I'm really excited. This whole thing is all new for me.
25:17We're mixing up a special kind of concrete because these pieces are only one inch thick, but they need to be tough enough to last under water.
25:26And Brandon just told me we need 50 pounds of ice.
25:29It turns out adding icy water to the concrete slows down the curing process, which gives it a smoother texture.
25:38So we're going to load 10 of these bags dry, and then we have to weigh out the water.
25:44The reason we do weight is it's precise.
25:45So like a conventional concrete is more like cooking, and yours is like baking.
25:51Yeah. This is going to age gracefully. It's going to live forever.
26:04There we go.
26:08This is cool.
26:09All right, you want to kill it?
26:14Kill it.
26:16Ooh, that looks a lot like cake batter.
26:20So I'm going to pour in one spot.
26:21Okay.
26:22I'm just going to let it flow out.
26:24That is awesome.
26:26I can see why, in the beginning, we worked so hard to make these tables so level.
26:34It's because four pieces come together to make one big ring.
26:38So when they meet up with each other, then they're perfect.
26:41Cappy built the wall that will go behind the hot tub to give Tracy and Paul some privacy from their neighbors.
27:02Now, Aunt Ren and I are going to decorate it with a mural that has a special meaning for the family.
27:09Normally, the gaps in the slatted design would make painting on it difficult, so I'm thinking outside the box.
27:15Hello.
27:17What are you wearing?
27:19I'm wearing our solution to our issue of trying to superimpose an image on here.
27:23Really?
27:24Mm-hmm.
27:25So I can take, like, an image and I can download it into the program and I can superimpose it here.
27:31All right, let's get started then.
27:33So I'm currently superimposing a picture of Tracy's tattoo that she got after her heart surgery.
27:40From talking with Sophia, it really brought their family together, so we thought it would be really nice if we put her tattoo on the boards to remind her that she's made it through and she is so strong for it.
27:53All right.
27:56I mean, it looks good.
28:07Rodney just finished adding the brackets to the concrete drum.
28:11Let's get it out of here so you never see this again.
28:14Yeah.
28:15Right there.
28:17Now, Ruby and Omai are taking it out for a multi-step makeover.
28:21I got the tank right there on the trailer.
28:23My co-pilot, he's not helping me do much of anything.
28:27First step, sandblasting.
28:29This deep clean will strip off all the old paint and grime.
28:34Next step, powder coating at my buddy Brian's shop.
28:37This is a finely ground powder that is baked onto the drum to protect it from South Dakota's toughest weather.
28:44Once the powder is applied, it is off to the oven where the high heat bonds the coating to the drum.
28:50When it cools, I get a call for pickup.
28:52Oh, my God.
28:53It looks amazing.
28:54This is perfect.
28:55From gritty old concrete drum to custom hot tub centerpiece, the transformation is complete.
29:06Time to move this hot tub into its new home.
29:08So we're going to fly it into the backyard.
29:14The challenge is today it's only Dustin and I.
29:18Ruby's out of town and Sprout's finding the garden boxes for Tracy.
29:22So we only have two of us to do a job that should probably take four.
29:25Wish me luck.
29:31What do you think?
29:33Wow, this looks great.
29:34Rodney did a nice job.
29:36Okay, so I have a plan.
29:38We're going to use the mini to carry the tub into the backyard.
29:41But I want to test it first.
29:43I just want to pick it up off this cradle just a little bit to see where we're at on tipping weight.
29:47Gotcha.
29:48Okay.
29:50So I know the mini will handle the weight of the drum.
29:52The challenge is in order to accommodate the size of the tub, the boom of the mini needs to extend pretty far.
29:58Sort of think about holding a bowling ball right here versus holding a bowling ball arm's length.
30:03It's a little tougher to do.
30:05We're just going to pick it up real slow.
30:06We don't want the machine to tip and then we'll track it into the backyard.
30:09We got this.
30:10We got this.
30:17How does it feel?
30:18I like that as long as we don't swing.
30:22Okay.
30:27Am I clear?
30:28Yeah.
30:29Okay, I'm coming down.
30:38I'm going to set her down.
30:39Now we need to access the bottom of the tub to bolt on the mounting plate that'll connect it into the support pipe.
30:49I'm using the mini to tilt the tub so we're not working under 2,000 pounds of steel.
30:55That'd be a dumb way to die, getting crushed by a concrete mixer or hot tub.
30:59Yeah, I don't want to be a pancake.
31:01This dusting cake.
31:02Okay, perfect.
31:03I like that.
31:13The next part is we have to bolt the first plate to the bottom of this.
31:18Rodney left this plate on top of the base.
31:21And then this plate then gets bolted to the second plate which is welded to the base.
31:26Well, let's look at the plates.
31:29So, if this, uh, wait.
31:33I messed up.
31:39So, uh, one thing I forgot to tell Rodney.
31:43I need a hole in the mounting plates so the flame hits the tub.
31:49Oh.
32:00Hola, amigo.
32:01Hello.
32:03You betcha.
32:04Well.
32:05You built exactly what I asked.
32:07I just forgot to ask for a hole.
32:09It happens.
32:10Yes.
32:11Well, I appreciate that.
32:12So, Rodney to the rescue yet again.
32:15That's the kind of guy he is.
32:16He came over with his mobile rig.
32:24He's got a hundred feet of hose.
32:26And he's gonna cut out this piece for us.
32:31Boom.
32:33Now, we'll cut the plate that mounts on the tub.
32:40He just spart a kickin' out of the hole.
32:43Thank you, brother.
32:44Appreciate it, dude.
32:45Yeah, we'll see ya.
32:46Get that last one.
32:53Okay.
32:54Awesome.
32:55All right.
32:56So, we got the mounting plate on.
32:57All right.
32:58Tracking towards you.
33:07Stop.
33:08Okay.
33:09Really slow.
33:10Ready?
33:11Okay.
33:16It's in.
33:17All right.
33:18Dude, put some bolts in it.
33:19Quick.
33:22Dude.
33:23Nice.
33:24All right.
33:25Concrete tops are next.
33:26Sweet.
33:29It's a bit warm.
33:30On the scale of one to hot pockets, how are we...
33:32Oh, you can handle it.
33:34Okay.
33:35Okay.
33:36The first one that goes in is our big donut.
33:37And that's the floor of the hot tub.
33:39We'll tip it down.
33:40Oh, my God.
33:42You just want to be really careful with it.
33:44There.
33:45All right.
33:46There.
33:47All right.
33:48Concrete donut.
33:49So, what's next is the bench pieces.
33:52Four of them that'll go in.
33:53We'll dry fit those to make sure they look great.
33:55There we go.
33:58Lastly, we'll dry fit the lip around the top of the tub.
34:02Got it?
34:03Yep.
34:04Okay.
34:05Awesome.
34:06Nice.
34:09So, the next step is to get everything perfectly level.
34:12And we'll do that with shim and silicone.
34:14And then the weight of these pieces on the silicone cures,
34:17that's what holds these things down.
34:19Awesome.
34:20So, back at Granny Flath's today, working on this burner plan for the hot tub.
34:36We went to a commercial kitchen supply store and got this giant burner.
34:40So, this is 160,000 BTUs.
34:43BTU stands for British Thermal Unit.
34:47It's a common way that we measure heat.
34:50So, for reference, the kitchen burner that you have at home is 7,000 BTUs.
34:56So, this burner is 20-plus times bigger.
34:59That's more than enough to heat up our hot tub.
35:02So, the part I want to work on right now is how we actually turn the gas valve.
35:08So, the girls went over to Uncle Kevin's shop and came up with some motorcycle parts
35:13that I think we'll be able to use on this.
35:16And the million-dollar question is, which piece is it going to be?
35:19We've got this as an option.
35:20Vinny, what do you think?
35:21The handlebars.
35:25Handlebars.
35:26We could, you know, maybe cut this off here and use this as a, like a throttle.
35:31Like .
35:32I think we'll do that.
35:33Vroom, vroom.
35:43Now that the hot tub's landed, the next mission is to make it part of a backyard paradise
35:49that's both functional and easy on the eyes.
35:52Step one is crafting a custom deck that hugs the tub's curves.
35:56We've got all this blocking in here that we have to do because we're going to curve this decking around the tub.
36:05Then, we need to bring the heat.
36:07So, we've made this custom throttle that'll stick down through the deck onto the valve.
36:13And this is how you'll actuate the burner and light it.
36:18Let's see if this thing lights up.
36:20The gas line has been run.
36:22It's under the ground.
36:23And it's in our sprinkler box.
36:25I have to get this shaft all the way down through this decking, through the lid of that box, and to touch the top of the valve.
36:33Okay, here it goes.
36:40So, that's wide open.
36:43We have ignition.
36:48Now, we finish installing the railing.
36:58It's 95 today, so I'm hiding under this deck in the shade.
37:02And after a quick wardrobe change, because my shirt looks like I took a dip in the tub, Scotty and I put up the privacy fence with a special touch for Tracy.
37:11So, I'm excited to see what she thinks when she sees it for the first time.
37:15Yeah.
37:16Awesome.
37:25Sprout and I are up bright and early, putting the final touches on Paul and Tracy's hot tub haven.
37:31We're hoping it will provide the perfect spark to kick off the next chapter of their adventures together.
37:40I like your lights, kiddo.
37:41I know, right?
37:42It looks super sharp.
37:43I love, love, love that.
37:45Same here.
37:46Obviously, she'll recognize it, but I'm interested to see how she'll react.
37:50React to it?
37:51You want to get them?
37:52Yeah.
37:53Cool.
37:54Okay.
38:00So, wait here, and once we hit three, then it's ready.
38:05Okay.
38:06Quick, quick, quick.
38:07Yes.
38:08Okay, quick.
38:09You're right here.
38:10Okay.
38:11All right.
38:12What are we doing?
38:13We're counting to three.
38:14One, two, three!
38:16Oh, my gosh.
38:17Oh, wow.
38:18Hey, you two.
38:19Hi.
38:20There's no words.
38:21Yeah.
38:22Give me a ride.
38:27Hey, you two.
38:36Hi.
38:40There's no words.
38:46Kill your brother.
38:50Oh, this is awesome.
38:51This is her.
38:53That's amazing, kid.
38:58It's like in a restaurant when the food comes out and it gets real quiet.
39:02It's always a good sign.
39:03It is.
39:04What do you think?
39:06It's so amazing.
39:08And you even have a concrete patio without a crack in it.
39:11That's amazing.
39:13Yes.
39:15Well, we took what you guys had said and thought a lot about the empty nester piece of it because it's a natural part of you raised your children to be capable, fully formed adult humans, and they're leaving now.
39:26And then this idea that you guys get to relearn you.
39:31Yeah.
39:31Right?
39:32You know, the next chapter.
39:34But also, you guys talked about entertaining.
39:36So we actually expanded the patio three feet farther this way and a couple feet out this way so friends can come and hang out.
39:44That's awesome.
39:45Yeah.
39:45And then we took your vegetable garden.
39:48We cleaned that up.
39:49And then we brought in some of these boxes for you.
39:51So easier to work on.
39:53You don't have to crawl around.
39:54Oh, my gosh.
39:55It's amazing.
39:56But, yeah, so we ultimately decided we wanted to tie the patio into this hot tub space for you guys.
40:01Just a little place you could come at the end of the day and relax.
40:04Very cool.
40:05And then the privacy screen was Sprout's idea.
40:08Mm-hmm.
40:09Yes.
40:09So Fia and I sourced some parts from your old bike.
40:13And on the way out there, she was explaining the story of your heart.
40:17And I worked with my aunt, Ren, to have it on the back wall.
40:20I can't believe you did that.
40:22The mural that Alex painted for me, I don't know if I'll ever be able to say in words how much it means to me.
40:32The surgery made us more aware our time could be short with each other.
40:38And Tracy is our heart, so it's extra special.
40:44It's pretty cool.
40:46That is so cool.
40:47The top rim on the tub, we did custom-made cast concrete.
40:51Very cool.
40:52So there's a cast bench inside and a little place for your feet.
40:55That is so cool.
40:57Oh, I'm so excited.
40:58Guaranteed no one else has one of these.
40:59No.
41:00Mm-hmm.
41:00One off.
41:01Absolutely.
41:02There's a lot of welding.
41:04A lot of fabric.
41:05Oh, yeah.
41:06Wow.
41:07This is amazing.
41:08Look at it.
41:09Holy smokes.
41:10They obviously know us quite well with our modern clean lines, the darker, deep colors, just a space where it's very comfortable.
41:22We can come and sit, relax.
41:24To heat this, you tapped onto the side of your house and brought a gas line under with a commercial burner off of a kitchen stove.
41:30There's a grip off my old handlebars.
41:32There you spotted it.
41:34So this turns.
41:38Turns the gas on and off.
41:40Oh.
41:40Oh, my.
41:40And then that's how you light it.
41:43Shut up.
41:44So from the tub, if it's getting a little cold, open her up.
41:48If it's getting a little hot, run her down.
41:50Seriously?
41:50Mm-hmm.
41:51I love it.
41:52It's amazing.
41:54Couldn't have asked for anything cooler.
41:56I love it.
41:57Thanks, brother.
42:01Well done.
42:03Thank you, darling.
42:06Okay.
42:07All right, kid.
42:07This is going to be a great space for us and some quality time, and I think we should go enjoy it now.
42:15Let's do it.
42:16Okay.
42:16Let's go.
42:18I know.
42:19Look at these nice chairs.
42:22Oh, yeah.
42:23Yeah, I could do this.
42:25This is nice.
42:27For sure.
42:29What is this thing?
42:31This is a robot arm that allows you to cut out custom stuff, and here I've got a sign for Cappy.
42:37You know, he likes to store everything here.
42:39He left his shipping containers.
42:41From the swimming pool, the grain bin project, the beehive material.
42:46Got a little growing collection back here I should probably come take care of.
42:49Cappy's storage fee, $1 per foot.
42:53That's funny.
42:54Yeah.
42:55Okay.
42:56Okay.
