00:00It is Friday, it's 5.52pm, and it is the end of the first week with my new clients, Alistair
00:13and Margot Hartnell. They say that coming here is the last roll of the dice for them.
00:18They had been on the cusp of getting a divorce.
00:21Walk forward, turn right, turn right, turn left, no, no, wait, no, sorry, that's my life.
00:27For God's sake, Alistair! Love has been replaced by hostility.
00:32You're useless at this, that's enough! Sorry, darling. All trust has gone.
00:36For sake. Sorry, sorry.
00:39Compounded by the fact that they seem unable to communicate in a meaningful and a reciprocal way.
00:45I feel unheard when I talk to you about how I'm feeling.
00:50Well, often, when you do want to talk, I've got work on my mind, and that's important, too.
01:01So it's just a case of bad timing, that's all.
01:04Their marriage doesn't make sense to them anymore.
01:07Over the course of the coming weeks, I'd like to see if we can retrace the steps that led to this situation,
01:13see if we can work out how they got here.
01:14Next, we have Luke and Stacey Warber.
01:19I believe the fault lines don't run as deep with them.
01:22I'm grateful for how patient you are, and that you're here with me now, doing this,
01:29because I know I'm not giving you what you need.
01:33That's so sweet, babe.
01:34On the surface, they have a loving marriage, but...
01:38Now can we try taking each other's hands, please, and maintaining that same eye contact?
01:44By their own admission, there are significant intimacy issues.
01:48How can't you do this?
01:50Mm-hmm.
01:50Uh...
01:51I'm sorry.
01:54I'm sorry, sorry.
01:55Can we take five?
01:55It's okay.
01:56Of course.
01:57It's okay, Luke.
02:00Take your time.
02:02I mean...
02:02It's okay.
02:03It's all part of the process.
02:04It's Friday, it's the beginning of the weekend now, but Monday will be a big day.
02:11I have exciting plans.
02:12I think that there could be a real breakthrough.
02:18Hello.
02:18Darling.
02:21Mine's good.
02:23This looks nice, doesn't it?
02:25Yeah.
02:25Hi, everyone.
02:26Hi.
02:27I just wanted to say thank you very much for all your hard work and your commitment this week.
02:32You should be very proud of yourselves.
02:35There's more for us to do next week, but for now, enjoy your evening.
02:43Right.
02:44Bon appétit.
02:45Cheers, everyone.
02:46Cheers.
02:49Cheers.
03:00Cheers.
03:02I just feel like every single thing I say is wrong.
03:15Every word, every utterance.
03:18She pounces on it like a wild animal.
03:20Yeah.
03:21She certainly has a way with her words, your missus.
03:25I thought you'd never ask.
03:28It's only duty-free.
03:29It's Kira's stuff.
03:34Can't still be swimming, can she?
03:35Can't still be swimming, can she?
03:35Can't still be swimming for a...
03:36I think she's swimming for like a little baby.
03:41I'm so excited.
03:41She's doing this.
03:42Come on, I'm so excited.
03:43Come on.
03:43I didn't do that.
03:44I really want to hear you.
03:48I killed her.
03:49I said there was something waitress.
03:50It's when he finally lost it.
03:51I was about to rest.
03:53It was fun.
03:53I mean, more than 20-year-old, Ariats....
03:54I hug her son of an old man, oh my father's never even seen a fa'an.
03:56No, I'm so excited.
03:57Can't, that's crazy.
03:58I love to stay on that one cara.
03:59And once again, we're still taking the way of my life.
04:00I love to tell him and he's doing all our life.
04:01My ex wanted me to try that kind of thing, couples therapy, not my cup of tea.
04:14You don't think it could be good for a relationship?
04:17Opening up more and sharing with each other?
04:21Nah.
04:22Ah, crime scene.
04:25Inspector, I don't think you should wear that to the crime scene.
04:28Why not?
04:29Because it's got iHeart St. Marie on the front of it.
04:35Hmm?
04:37Still haven't gotten your clothes back then.
04:39I must have left 50 messages for Solomon.
04:42This is the only shirt he didn't take.
04:43But I've got a mate from the Met to call in a favour, and I've got him to triangulate his phone for me.
04:48Yeah, that's a very good use of their resources.
04:50Hey, listen.
04:52He stole from me, and that is a crime.
04:56Inspector, I just think you should take the hat off.
04:59Yeah, alright.
05:09Victim is Kira Mayhew.
05:1142 years old, fully qualified clinical therapist.
05:14Ran a couples retreat here.
05:16Cars of death looks like a drowning.
05:18Went for a swim at 7 o'clock yesterday evening,
05:21and at 9 o'clock, two fishermen came across a body about 100 metres out, directly opposite this spot.
05:27They watched over the body until the paramedics arrived.
05:30Who else was here last night?
05:32About six people in total, four residents, two staff, the chef and the waitress.
05:37There's some bruising around her neck and shoulders.
05:39Looks like finger marks.
05:40Paramedics say they're recent.
05:42More likely from someone forcing her down under the water.
05:45They reckon it's murder.
05:46That's why they called us.
05:48So what?
05:49She swam out to sea.
05:50Somebody was with her and did this.
05:52Or maybe somebody was waiting for her out there on a boat.
05:55Inspector, what would you say if I told you I just found a bingo ball at the crime scene?
06:00I'd say, have you actually found a bingo ball at the crime scene?
06:03And I would say yes.
06:05Yes, I did find a bingo ball at the crime scene.
06:0813.
06:10I'm looking for some.
06:10I mean, it probably doesn't have much to do with Kira May, who's murdered, all right?
06:17We don't know yet.
06:18Let's bag it.
06:19Oh, okay.
06:20The bingo ball's officially evidenced now.
06:22Bag in the bingo ball.
06:24All right.
06:25Sergeant Fletcher, you talk to the staff.
06:27Officer Rose, see if there's any security cameras in the place.
06:30And DS Thomas, let's talk to the guests.
06:33Oh, I'll keep on with that.
06:35Sorry, did you just say murder?
06:41What, I thought it was an accident.
06:42Well, it wasn't.
06:44So we need to ask you where you all were between the hours of seven and nine last night.
06:47Are you saying we're suspects?
06:48When did you last see Kira Mayhew?
06:51Before dinner, we were having some aperitifs, and she came and told us to have a nice night.
06:55Enjoy your evening.
06:58What time was that?
06:59Just before seven.
07:01She went for a swim and didn't see her again until she was...
07:04Was, um...
07:06Dead.
07:09Just say it.
07:12And was that a regular thing, her going for a swim at that time?
07:15Seemed to be, like, most evenings.
07:17Kira said it was her own therapy.
07:20Getting into the sea after a long day, she found it restorative.
07:24And during the two hours between you seeing her and her body being found, you were...
07:29We were all together having dinner.
07:30Look, it wasn't one of us, okay?
07:36Nobody told us that we were going to be grilled like this.
07:38None of us have even been to bed.
07:40And I took a sleeping pill.
07:45Don't apologise for me, Alistair.
07:46You know I hate it when you do that.
07:48Sorry, dear.
07:49And don't call me dear, either.
07:50No, of course not.
07:51Sorry.
07:52Forgot.
07:52God help us.
08:02I spoke with the staff who can alibi each other for the time of the murder.
08:11They were preparing dinner between seven and nine.
08:15You think you're listening?
08:16I'm listening.
08:17Just checking, sir.
08:18What did they say about the victim?
08:20Well, that she was a decent boss.
08:21Always paid them on time.
08:23Was friendly.
08:24Any idea you'd want to harm her?
08:25Nope.
08:26They reckon she didn't really know anyone here.
08:28Never saw her go out much.
08:29Kept herself to herself.
08:31I checked her phone.
08:33All her texts and all her emails were related.
08:36Apart from her mum back in England.
08:37How's she doing?
08:39Not great.
08:40We said we'd speak tomorrow when she might be a little bit calmer.
08:43I found this.
08:46Date and time is yesterday.
08:505.52 in the afternoon.
08:53That's just over an hour before her swim.
08:59It's the weekend now, but Monday will be a big day.
09:05I have exciting plans, and I think that there could be a real breakthrough.
09:14My instinct on this is that a lie is being told.
09:20If I can draw out the truth, the fallout would be truly devastating.
09:25And only a couple of hours later, she's been murdered.
09:32You're thinking one of the guests here did it?
09:35I'm thinking maybe one of them did.
09:38On one hand, all the four guests were having dinner together at the time of Kira Mayhew's murder.
09:45Oh, look.
09:45There are only two cameras in the resort.
09:48Just before 7 o'clock, Kira Mayhew goes for a swim.
09:50But on the other hand, all the guests leave the table once during the evening.
09:55So, in theory, it could have been any one of them.
09:58All right.
10:00Now here.
10:01At 18 minutes past 7, Mr. Hartnell goes to his bedroom to get his glasses.
10:06And then here, 7.46, Stacey Wabo goes to the bathroom to check her makeup.
10:12And at 8.03, Mrs. Hartnell goes to grab her shawl.
10:15And after that, at 8.30, Luke Wabo goes to his bedroom to get a bottle of rum.
10:21So, each of them had opportunity to kill the victim during the dinner.
10:26Except, on the other hand, no one leaves the table for more than two to three minutes.
10:32And they all returned dry as a bone.
10:35Okay.
10:35So, how did one of them manage to leave the dinner table, run down to the beach,
10:40get themselves somehow out to sea 100 meters, drown Kira Mayhew...
10:44Then come all the way back, dry off, before returning to the table in less than a few minutes.
10:51Well, that's just not possible.
11:05All right, Sebastian.
11:06I'll read the victim's notebook.
11:08You make us start listening to these tapes.
11:10Focus on the ones recorded since the four suspects arrived.
11:13Oh, these tapes are teeny tiny.
11:17Look, they make me look like a giant.
11:19Says the giant.
11:20Yes.
11:22So, printed the victim's schedule the day of her murder.
11:25Trust exercises in the morning.
11:27Sounds fun.
11:28Lunch, followed by one-to-one sessions in the afternoon with Stacey Walbert, then Alistair Hartnell.
11:34Inspector, I came to check in on the murder case.
11:38The minister gets nervous when one of our resorts is hit by a crime.
11:42I'd like to reassure her it's in harm.
11:46Yes, sir.
11:47We're currently working on the basis that one of the four residents did it.
11:51We just need to work out which one it was and how they did it.
11:55And why.
11:56So, pretty much everything.
11:58You look smart, sir.
12:04Going somewhere nice?
12:05Yacht club.
12:06Lobster night.
12:08Hmm?
12:10Lobster night, eh?
12:12That's why you're looking so snappy.
12:16You know, snappy.
12:18Like claws.
12:20No, no, no.
12:21Lobster claws.
12:21I get the joke, Inspector.
12:23I just didn't find it very funny.
12:28Enjoy your evenings?
12:30You too, sir.
12:30Snappy.
12:31Like claws, you know.
12:35Nope.
12:36I need to get this.
12:38Hello, mate.
12:41Excuse me, Commissioner.
12:45Anton Cousset.
12:48How long has it been since we last...
12:50Frost pads?
12:50Or were you going to say, crossed swords?
12:54I hadn't decided before you caught me off.
12:58How can I help you, Mr. Bousset?
13:00Anton, please.
13:02We're going to publish an article about you, Commissioner.
13:05And I want to give you the right to respond.
13:09Here is a draft copy of the piece.
13:13Let me know when you're ready to talk.
13:16Inspector, that was your contact at the Met, wasn't it?
13:23You know where Solomon is?
13:25Palm Beach Hotel.
13:26I'm coming with you.
13:27It's something I could easily live without, but once you have your own private jet, it's hard to give that up, you know.
13:50I love it, ladies.
13:53It's a fun night, right?
13:59Solomon.
14:01Merlin!
14:02Oh!
14:03I'm just seeing you here, man.
14:05I was just talking about you.
14:06Come, come, come, come, come, come.
14:07Meet Tashel and Tashana.
14:11This is my brother, would you believe?
14:13Murphy!
14:13We're half-brothers.
14:14Where's my stuff?
14:15You stole from me and I want my things back.
14:17I never stole anything.
14:19He gets confused sometimes.
14:21Had a bump to his head a few years back.
14:22Solomon!
14:24I'm not joking around.
14:25You get me my things now or I arrest you.
14:28It's your choice.
14:29Okay, man.
14:31I understand.
14:33Let me just...
14:33Oh, God!
14:41Are you okay?
14:42I'm fine.
14:43Come on, get him!
14:44Oh, God!
14:55Fuck!
14:59Fuck!
15:00Fuck!
15:00Fuck!
15:00Fuck!
15:01Fuck!
15:02Fuck!
15:02Fuck!
15:03Fuck!
15:03Fuck!
15:03Fuck!
15:03Fuck!
15:03Fuck!
15:03Now you can't have the salt in the police office. It's a theft and breaking and entering.
15:10Mervyn, my brother, please don't do this to me.
15:14I'm sorry, all right? I just, I really needed the money.
15:18I'm in debt, and it's the kind of person you don't much want to be in debt to.
15:25I'm sorry I let you down, I just, I didn't know what else to do.
15:31I just need my stuff back, so.
15:3424 hours. Otherwise I'm pressing charges. Do you understand?
15:39Appreciate it, ma'am.
15:55So, we dusted the bingo ball for prints, sir, like you requested. What got nothing from it?
16:00Oh, oh well, worth a try, eh?
16:02Right, what else we got?
16:06We've done background on both couples.
16:09The Hartnells live in Islington in London. He's a barrister. She runs a luxury interior design business.
16:16Oh, very Islington. They did a brief spell of grief counselling with another therapist shortly after their daughter died.
16:22She was only 17. Seems their marriage has been struggling ever since.
16:28What about the Warbers?
16:30Also live in London. Luke works in finance earns well. Has been married to Stacey for three years.
16:37I've been reading the victim's notes on both couples. She records a lot after her sessions with them, especially on the dictaphone. But it's okay. Officer Rose is working on it.
16:46Yes. Yes, I am. I am totally on top of it. So don't you worry, Inspector.
16:52It seems the Warbers came out here because they've been having intimacy issues. It's been 18 months since they were last intimate with each other.
17:05When you say intimate, you mean intimate?
17:08Yes. And according to the notes, the issue is entirely on Luke's side. And in one of their last sessions, Miss Mayhew got him to admit why he was like this.
17:19Go on.
17:2018 months ago, Luke was unfaithful. He had a one-night thing.
17:24Naughty, naughty boy.
17:26Mm-hmm. With him wife's sister.
17:29Cha-cha. Oh, sorry, what?
17:31Mm-hmm. And ever since he's been wracked with guilt and shame.
17:34Why? He's been a busy, busy man.
17:37I mean, that explains why he can't do the business.
17:40Mm-hmm. Now, Kira told him that he needs to confront it, that he can't ignore it anymore.
17:48She was suggesting he tell Stacey.
17:51I think she knew their marriage couldn't move forward based on a betrayal like that.
17:55Is that what Kira Mayhew was referring to when she said...
17:59My instinct on this is that a lie is being told.
18:03So, Luke killed her to silence her? Stop the truth coming out?
18:08It's a cliche, isn't it?
18:15Saying something's the biggest mistake of your life.
18:17How did it happen?
18:18I don't know. I just...
18:20People flirt, you know?
18:23With Stacey, we go for a night out and the blokes swarm in.
18:28I mean, you've seen her. She's gorgeous.
18:29Because she could have anyone if she wanted.
18:32And what happened with me and Cheryl, her sister, it felt like I was...
18:37Like I was proving myself that I've still got it too, you know?
18:41But something in you must have wanted to come clean because you admitted it to Kira Mayhew.
18:46I thought she'd help.
18:47In what way?
18:47Absolve me of the guilt if I opened up.
18:52I think that's a priest you're after.
18:53But all she said was that the marriage couldn't survive if it was built on a betrayal like that.
18:59She's normally so calm and measured, but with that...
19:03It really bothered her.
19:05Like she wasn't going to let it go.
19:06And that's what worried you.
19:09Panicked you that she would tell Stacey herself.
19:12And then you'd lose your gorgeous wife completely.
19:15But you weren't going to let that happen.
19:16And that is why you murdered Kira Mayhew.
19:18No.
19:19No.
19:20That's why I've come to you.
19:21Because I know what it looks like.
19:24But it wasn't me who killed her.
19:26I swear to you.
19:30Alright.
19:33That's all for now.
19:36What a moron.
19:48It's her.
19:53Inspector.
19:55Post-mortem's in.
19:56Confirms what we thought.
19:58Water in the victim's lungs confirms she died due to drowning.
20:02Finger marks on her shoulders and neck suggest she was forced under the water.
20:07But how did the killer manage to do it?
20:09To leave from the dinner table here, run down to the beach, drown Kira, then get back to the dinner table, seemingly with not a spot of water on them.
20:19And in just a few minutes.
20:21And how does this figure into all of this?
20:23Why was it at our crime scene?
20:25You do know things get washed up on beaches all the time.
20:29Yeah.
20:30But a bingo ball?
20:33Officer Rose.
20:36Officer Rose.
20:39Officer Rose.
20:41Huh?
20:42Have you made any progress with the tapes yet?
20:44No progress as such.
20:46But I assure you, when I get something, you'll be the first to know.
20:49Inspector, I just spoke with the victim's mom, Sandra.
20:52Go on.
20:53To this day, her mom doesn't know why Kira left the UK.
20:57She didn't just want a change of scene.
20:59No, it was totally out of the blue.
21:01Overnight, Kira left her fiancé, announced that she was setting up a practice abroad, never even kept in touch with any of her friends.
21:08So it got me thinking, could Kira Mayhew's murder be connected to something that happened back in the UK?
21:18Also, sir, Kira's mom spoke with her just before that swim, while she was heading down to the beach.
21:27And she's...
21:29Officer Rose, see what's going on out there, will you?
21:36Anyway, she said Kira seemed distracted.
21:41Distant, even.
21:42Her mom said it was like she wasn't even present.
21:45Inspector, some big-headed brother in her sports car is asking for you.
21:59So, you got my stuff then?
22:01Not in a physical sense, no.
22:03What's that supposed to mean?
22:05Been a busy day.
22:06Bit of business here, bit of business there.
22:08Always somewhere I got to be in Salomon land.
22:12But, I know who has your thing, so...
22:17Jump in, and let's go get there.
22:19So, this is where all my stuff is.
22:30Nice.
22:31Smurta, just the next place.
22:33You ever come across her?
22:35No.
22:35Funnily enough.
22:36She's the kind of person you go to if you have some things that sell it.
22:39Maybe other people may be less...
22:40So, she fends your stolen goods.
22:42It's not for me to put a label on what...
22:44So, that's a yes.
22:44We'll have you reunited with your stuff in no time.
22:49She's a very amenable woman.
22:52Who is it?
22:53Murtal.
22:54It's Salomon Clark, remember me?
22:56Got my brother here with me.
22:58It was his stuff I sold you, and...
23:02We were wondering if we could get it back.
23:03No.
23:04No, clear up.
23:06Murtal.
23:07Honey.
23:07Don't you honey me, master.
23:09She's a lot more vexed than I remember her being before.
23:11Murtal.
23:12I'm going to cut to the chase.
23:13You are currently in possession of items illegally taken from my home.
23:19Murtal.
23:24Think she's thinking about it.
23:29What the...
23:30What's she doing that for?
23:33Where is this stuff?
23:35It's in my eyes.
23:37It's burning.
23:38That's ass.
23:39Why did she pour hot sauce over me?
23:41I don't know, man.
23:42Oh, but she got that meat.
23:44Girl.
23:44I know funny.
23:48Murtal, I'm not playing at.
23:50How much hot sauce did she got?
23:51Why has she got so much of it?
23:52I think it's some bullet things she got going on.
23:54And if that's not sent you back in, then I will set Tiberius on you.
23:57Who's Tiberius?
23:58Feels like we come at a bad time.
24:02Maybe we should come back for another day.
24:07They're threatening to publish this article.
24:11Doesn't hold back, does it?
24:13After everything I've done for this I learn, this is the thanks I receive.
24:21And the fact that Anton Lucet is sharpening the knives is of no surprise to me.
24:27You and he have history?
24:29Because I have no respect for this gossip-mongering rag.
24:34This isn't journalism.
24:36This is attention-running rhetoric.
24:41What?
24:45This island petitioned to get you your job back.
24:49And you walked away without any explanation, like you didn't care.
24:53And now, months later, you come back as if nothing happened.
24:58I do care.
25:01You know that.
25:02But others don't.
25:05All they know is that their commissioner of police abandoned them.
25:11It's up to you to change their minds.
25:15Oh, my eyes won't stop singing, man.
25:17Tell me about it.
25:18The sun should go down in some of my trousers.
25:20Oh, my eyes won't stop singing, man.
25:20Oh, my eyes won't stop singing, man.
25:21Oh, my eyes won't stop singing, man.
25:21Oh, my eyes won't stop singing, man.
25:22Oh, my eyes won't stop singing, man.
25:23I'm telling you, Mervyn, there's hot sauce in place.
25:26There's hot sauce that's not supposed to go, Mervyn, man.
25:35That's some mighty fiery sauce Mertal's been cooking up.
25:39I mean, look at us.
25:40We're covered in this stuff.
25:42Like a couple of chicken wings.
25:52Oh.
25:52Oh.
25:59You're a liability, Saul.
26:03You know that.
26:05My life has been turned upside down since you came into it.
26:09Yeah, I kind of have that effect.
26:14I can't live like that, man.
26:15I'm a detective inspector.
26:20Do you understand that?
26:24And I need my clothes back.
26:26And I need to not be chasing around after you.
26:32This is not how I...
26:33I'm sorry, man.
26:42I'm sorry, man.
26:42I'm sorry, man.
26:42I'm sorry, man.
26:46But I'm sorry, man.
26:59I'm sorry, man.
26:59Oh, hey, Sarge.
27:21Yeah, right there.
27:22Are you same boat?
27:23Yeah, just, um, yeah.
27:25What are you doing here?
27:26Been having drinks with a friend from Jamaica.
27:28I was just on my way home when I see the lights are on.
27:31And I realise, Officer Rose is working late.
27:34Why is Officer Rose working late?
27:37I'm asking myself.
27:38Yeah, just, um, going through these tapes.
27:42Still.
27:44Still on these tapes.
27:48And which one you on now, then?
27:50Tape number two.
27:53Two? Tape two? Is that all?
27:55I'm sorry, Sarge.
27:56It's just every time I start listening, my mind just wanders somewhere else.
28:01Then I start thinking about other things.
28:03So then I rewind the tape to the beginning.
28:06But then the same thing happens all over again.
28:08It's just...
28:09It's just...
28:14My brain, you know?
28:16I get a bit fidgety sometimes.
28:18Like, I know what I'm meant to be doing.
28:21And I intentionally try to do it.
28:23But my mind just does its own a thing.
28:25I just want to finish this.
28:33Hmm.
28:34Alright.
28:35How about...
28:37We go through this together.
28:39You and me.
28:41You sure, Sarge?
28:42I know if it was me here needing assistance, you would do exactly the same thing.
28:49Right?
28:52No.
28:54I'm just joking.
28:55Of course I would.
28:56No question.
28:57So there you go then.
28:59Ah.
29:00Alright.
29:01Let's do this thing.
29:06Ah.
29:06My boy.
29:07Woo!
29:08So, you have a good time with your friend?
29:11Oh, it was cool, you know.
29:13Yeah?
29:13Nice to hear all the gossip going on back in Kingston.
29:18You know, you never did tell me why you left Jamaica.
29:27I left because of a guy I was seeing.
29:33Things got complicated between us.
29:35And, um...
29:37I just realised the best thing that I could do...
29:43Was just to turn and walk away.
29:45Mmm.
29:46Mmm.
29:48Mmm.
29:48Mmm.
29:49Mmm.
29:49Mmm.
29:50Mmm.
29:52Mmm.
29:53Mmm.
29:54Mmm.
29:55Mmm.
29:56Mmm.
29:57Mmm.
29:58Mmm.
29:59Mmm.
30:00Mmm.
30:01Mmm.
30:02Mmm.
30:03Mmm.
30:04Mmm.
30:05Mmm.
30:06Good morning, Isaac.
30:27Good morning.
30:28Good morning, Clarence.
30:30Good morning.
30:30Ah, how was the catch this morning?
30:33So soon.
30:34So soon?
30:35Let me look.
30:35Let me look.
30:36Let me see.
30:36Okay, I want that one there.
30:39That thing.
30:40Good morning, Sash.
30:45Morning.
30:46Morning.
30:49Inspector.
30:51I'm here.
30:53We got your message.
31:02So, I was doing a bit of nosing around the old place and, uh, bingo.
31:06Literally.
31:07Oh, so that's where it came from.
31:09Yeah.
31:09Apparently this place used to be a resort for the over-sixties.
31:12So this must have been here since then.
31:14Okay.
31:15So, how do you explain one of those bingo balls ending up on the same beach as our crime scene?
31:20Well, it didn't magic itself there, did it?
31:22Somebody must have taken one of those bingo balls ending up on the same boat.
31:23Somebody must have taken it from this, so we're going to have to dust it for prints.
31:27I could do that for you, sir.
31:29Oh, nice one.
31:32How about you two?
31:33You got something?
31:33So, the tapes care of me who recorded over the last week, there was ten hours of it.
31:38And throughout it all, when she talks about Alistair and Margot Hartnell, she doesn't
31:43once mention they lost a daughter.
31:45She was only 17.
31:47Seems their marriage has been struggling ever since.
31:52Which was kind of odd, right?
31:54So, we did some digging.
31:56Their daughter, Charlotte, was killed in a car accident, a hit and run.
32:00But the person who did it was never found.
32:03All that was known was that it was a female driver.
32:06Only, the hit and run happened outside the family home in Islington.
32:11Kira Mayhew's practice was just over a mile away.
32:15Also, it happened on the 1st of April, 2021.
32:18And Kira Mayhew, she moved over here six weeks later.
32:21Is it possible that that's what it was?
32:25Kira was behind a car accident?
32:29That's good work.
32:30A pair of you.
32:31Well done.
32:33You go and get that dusted and we'll go and talk to the Hartnells.
32:38So, who's going to hold this then?
32:41We didn't come here because we suspected Kira Mayhew was a woman who killed our daughter.
32:46We came in a last ditch attempt to save our marriage.
32:49Truly, we did.
32:50Then, why did you never mention to Miss Mayhew the fact that you lost your daughter?
32:55By your own admission, your relationship problem started five years ago at the same time.
33:02We didn't talk about it with her.
33:05Because we never talk about it.
33:06It's easier if we don't.
33:09Margot tries, bless her.
33:10Or used to, you know, to try to get me to open up.
33:12But I just can't bear it.
33:18I don't want to lose her.
33:19I want to fix our marriage.
33:21But I can't if I have to churn all that up again.
33:24I'm just not strong enough.
33:28It's all right, my love.
33:29If the Hartnells didn't come here for revenge, then the question still remains.
33:44Why did Kira Mayhew leave London five years ago?
33:46What happened to make her suddenly up sticks and move to the other side of the world?
33:49Oh, please give me a call when you get this.
33:52Just, just let me know you're okay.
33:58So, it's Stacey.
34:00I think she's had a meltdown.
34:02I haven't seen her since yesterday.
34:05I think she knew.
34:06I think Kira told her about me and her sister.
34:11Mishnah, everything all right?
34:12We'll look into it.
34:29I saw she was upset, crying.
34:32So, I went over.
34:34As soon as she said she was staying at the conference retreat, I called you.
34:38Couldn't get much from her.
34:39Except, she didn't want me to phone her husband.
34:45Yeah.
34:45Well, that's hardly surprising.
34:48Uh, sir.
34:49Um.
34:51Maybe I should take this one.
35:05Everyone knows, don't they?
35:07Only us.
35:08May I?
35:09Can you tell me when you found out, Mrs. Warbur?
35:21Thursday night.
35:22I went to get some air on the beach and Kira was there.
35:26She'd been drinking.
35:27She'd not seen it like that.
35:29She'd always been so composed.
35:31She could hardly stand up, so...
35:33I helped her back to her bungalow.
35:35She was sort of rambling.
35:36Talking about some guy who had betrayed her back in England before she moved here.
35:42I'd been cheating on her.
35:44I got her home and put her on the couch.
35:46And she looked me in the eyes and spoke to me.
35:49Stacy.
35:50Like it really mattered.
35:51Don't be like me.
35:53Don't be, Stacy.
35:54There was just something in the way she'd said it.
35:58And I knew she'd had a one-to-one session with Luke that day and maybe whatever he'd said had, like, triggered her.
36:04It reminded her of her own betrayal.
36:06That's why she was drunk.
36:07So, when she was asleep, I saw her notebook.
36:15I felt sick.
36:18Couldn't even process it.
36:20Couldn't even breathe.
36:23So, I just pretended I didn't know.
36:26Stacy, you've been through a lot in the last couple of days.
36:30If you were in denial, if Kira was pressing you to confront what you'd found out...
36:37No.
36:38No, I didn't.
36:40I admit there was all this pent-up stuff inside me, but I didn't kill Kira.
36:45I swear.
36:45All right.
36:55Well, thank you for talking with me, Mr. Shaw.
36:58What did the ex-boyfriend have to say for himself?
37:00The ex-fiancé.
37:02The affair he was having had been going on for three whole years for Hankira's back when she found out.
37:08Wow.
37:09That must have floored her.
37:10I mean, her job is to provide relationship advice when all the time she was blind to a three-year-long deception.
37:16Explains why she suddenly upped and left for another country.
37:19And why Luke's betrayal triggered her so much.
37:22And why she had one or three over the limit.
37:24But it still doesn't explain why she was murdered three nights ago.
37:29Inspector Diaz-Thomas, I think we got something.
37:39Patrick Campbell, therapist.
37:42Consultation fee, $150.
37:44She's based in Guadalupe.
37:46Specializes in hypnotherapy.
37:49Kira called him Friday afternoon, asking for advice.
37:53He offered to share their conversation as part of our investigation.
37:57On what?
37:58She said a client of hers, Margot Hartnell, had just opened up to her and was struggling with the memory of an event of her recent past.
38:05Because she had completely blocked it out.
38:07Which, apparently, is not uncommon for people dealing with traumatic experiences.
38:11And according to Mr. Campbell, it's a pretty unorthodox approach for Kira to resort to hypnotherapy so early on in the process.
38:18But she was convinced it was necessary.
38:20So, this forgotten memory, do we know what it has to do with?
38:24The night their daughter was killed in a hit and run five years ago.
38:28Mrs. Hartnell does not remember a thing about it.
38:32But ever since, she's been growing this feeling of guilt.
38:36You know?
38:36Like, maybe she might have done something bad that night.
38:41Wait.
38:42You don't mean...
38:45All that was known was that it was a female driver.
38:49Mrs. Hartnell wanted it all off the record.
38:52That's why there was nothing in her notes or recordings.
38:56Right.
38:57We need to talk to Mrs. Hartnell and that therapist.
38:59We need him here sharpish.
39:01Come on.
39:03Well, at first, it was just guilt I felt.
39:06Our grief counsellor said it was normal as a parent to feel a sense of responsibility.
39:11Look, whatever I did five years ago, I want the truth to come out.
39:15If you think I killed Kira Mayhew because I wanted to stop that happening, you're wrong.
39:20She arranged for me to have hypnotherapy today.
39:22Well, that can still happen, Mrs. Hartnell.
39:25We've arranged for a hypnotherapist to speak with you, if you feel you're able.
39:31Inspector!
39:32If you wouldn't mind going with Sergeant Fletcher.
39:35Yeah.
39:36I guess all we can do now is wait.
39:48Ah.
39:49We're back to the bingo ball.
39:51Inspector!
39:52Sarge.
39:53Just got back from dusting off the bingo ball machine for prints.
39:57Unfortunately, nothing.
39:58What's up with the inspector?
40:06Am I all right?
40:10Inspector!
40:11Everything all right, sir?
40:12You've got something?
40:15Sir, what are you doing?
40:19It's a little experiment.
40:20The bingo balls float.
40:36The bingo ball floats.
40:39Okay, so why take it out of the bingo ball cage thingy and bring it to the sea, to the water's edge?
40:49Was it just to see if it floats?
40:51Or, maybe it's to see where it goes?
40:54Or, maybe it's to see where it goes.
40:58In which case...
41:00So how did one of them manage to leave the dinner table, run down to the beach, somehow get themselves a hundred meters out to sea, drown Keira Mayhew?
41:08None of them left the table for more than two to three minutes at a time.
41:13And was that a regular thing, her going for a swim at that time, like, most evenings?
41:19She said Keira seemed distracted.
41:26Of course!
41:27That's why you were there, you little beauty!
41:30Mwah!
41:31Okay, I need to speak to a fisherman, or an oceanographer, ologist type of person, basically anyone who knows the currents in this bay.
41:41T.S. Thomas, I need a toxicology report done on Keira Mayhew.
41:44Officer Rose, I need you to collect some evidence from her office.
41:47But, you know who did it?
41:49I do.
41:50And I know how they managed to drown Keira Mayhew a hundred meters out of sea, without even stepping a foot in the water.
41:57Come on!
42:01For those wondering why Margot Hartnell isn't here with us, it's because she's currently with a hypnotherapist,
42:08doing what she was always supposed to be doing today, trying to recover a buried memory of what really happened five years ago,
42:16the night her daughter died.
42:19Why am I telling you this?
42:20Because Margot's therapy sessions were meant to be conducted by Keira Mayhew,
42:26until somebody tried to stop the truth from coming out, by murdering her.
42:31Mr. Hartnell.
42:35Me? I did no such thing.
42:38Oh, but you did. I know you did.
42:41But how? I was at dinner when it happened, on dry bloody land.
42:44Yeah, you were. Which is why it was so clever of you.
42:48But now that I've got a better understanding of what's going on, I believe you created a small window of opportunity in which to commit murder.
42:55But not 100 metres out at sea.
42:57You drowned Keira Mayhew right outside your own bungalow.
43:02Because, from the very start of this case, we've worked on the assumption that as Miss Mayhew's body was discovered 100 metres out at sea,
43:12in a straight line from where she swam, that's where she was drowned.
43:16But what if, actually, when Miss Mayhew went for her evening dip, she preferred to swim along the shore, rather than out from it?
43:25That would mean she'd have to swim past your bungalow farther along the beach.
43:31And that would give you opportunity to commit murder.
43:36But when? I told you I was at dinner when it happened.
43:40Yeah, we have security camera footage that shows you leaving the dinner table to get your glasses at 18 minutes past seven.
43:47I was gone, what, a couple of minutes, three minutes at the most.
43:52You're not seriously suggesting I was able to physically drown a fit and healthy woman in that time without getting soaked in water?
43:59Yeah. Sounds impossible, right?
44:01But I don't think Miss Mayhew was as fit and healthy as she might normally be.
44:06I believe you sedated her.
44:09We know that your wife uses sleeping pills.
44:13None of us been to bed.
44:14None of us took a sleeping pill.
44:16And we also know that you are the last person to have a one-to-one session with Miss Mayhew that day at 5pm.
44:22One-to-one sessions in the afternoon with Stacey Warbur and Alistair Hartnell.
44:28And while there...
44:30We believe you spiked her drink when she wasn't looking.
44:37We didn't believe Kira was drugged because the finger marks on her neck suggested she was held down by force and drowned.
44:43We're awaiting the toxicology report and results from the glass Kira drank from.
44:48And I've no doubt we'll get confirmation that there were significant traces of sleeping pills in her system.
44:54And so, while Miss Mayhew was swimming, she suddenly felt drowsy and swam ashore.
45:02When you returned to your bungalow under the pretense of getting your glasses, you ran down to the beach where Miss Mayhew was lying unconscious on the sand.
45:12And then you did two things.
45:14First, you grabbed her neck and shoulders, making sure to leave bruises so it would look like someone had strangled her and forced her under the water.
45:24Before moving her into the sea for her to be carried away, making sure that she was face down so that, still unconscious, her lungs would fill with water.
45:34It took less than a minute.
45:37All you had to do now was hurry back to the dinner table and leave Kira to drown and let the sea do the rest of the work for you.
45:47We checked with a local oceanologist at the university.
45:51And the current in this bay moves in a north-westerly direction, which means it would have carried Miss Mayhew's body diagonally.
46:00Taking her from your bungalow here to where her body was discovered here.
46:05And with her clothes being left on the beach here, we'd all assume she swam in a straight line.
46:13Now, you had no idea where the currents would take Kira's body.
46:16So, you had to test it first, didn't you?
46:19You went and found this.
46:23And you threw it into the sea to observe which route it took, which was conveniently in a north-westerly direction.
46:29From your bungalow directly to where Kira began her nightly swim.
46:33And that's when your plan finally came together.
46:36Kira's body was found still at sea, not long after she drowned.
46:41But this ball, left overnight, ended up washing up a shawl.
46:45And that was your undoing.
46:47But, why would he do this to her?
46:49Because he didn't want Kira to help his wife remember.
46:53Remember what?
46:54What he did.
46:55I remember, Alistair.
46:56I remember all of it.
46:57All the horror of it.
46:59You rushing in and telling me someone had hurt our little girl.
47:02And I remember the ambulance and the police and the shock and the pain.
47:06And I remember you coming in and holding me in tears shaking.
47:13Both of us heartbroken.
47:14And I remember in tears shaking.
47:15Both of us heartbroken.
47:16And I remember in tears shaking.
47:17Both of us heartbroken.
47:18And I remember in that moment, the smell of alcohol.
47:25And I remember you coming in and holding me in tears shaking, both of us heartbroken.
47:42And I remember in that moment the smell of alcohol on your breath.
47:52And I remember coming back inside and seeing you.
48:05I checked the original case file, Mr. Hartnell, and the phone call to the police in which the
48:10hit and run driver was described as female came from an anonymous caller.
48:15That was you, wasn't it?
48:19Time to direct suspicion away from yourself.
48:26I would have lost everything.
48:34Alistair Hartnell, I'm arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Kira Mayhew.
48:41You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defense if you do not mention when questioned
48:47anything you later rely on in court.
49:02I want to see you ever again.
49:09Well, well, well.
49:20Good evening to you both.
49:22Good evening.
49:23Catherine, we spoke at Marian Edwards' charity barbecue, I think.
49:28I don't remember.
49:29I certainly enjoyed our little chat.
49:32Commissioner, can I get you a rub?
49:35That won't be necessary.
49:36This won't take that long.
49:38I think I'll have one.
49:39Catherine, if you wouldn't mind.
49:42I appreciate you giving me an advance copy of the article.
49:47Here is my written statement in response.
49:51Saying?
49:53I agree with every single word you've written.
50:00Sorry?
50:01After receiving some sage advice from my good friend here, as I say in my statement,
50:07it hurt to think that the bond I had forged with this island had been broken.
50:13But the circumstances were of my own making.
50:16So, I will be the one to fix it.
50:19And how will you do that?
50:21As of tomorrow, I will be commencing an initiative with my team.
50:25And with a little help from the Highlands Mayor.
50:28An initiative to strengthen our relationship with the community.
50:34So, if you will excuse me, I have work to do.
50:37Good evening.
50:38Well, he just killed my article, didn't he?
50:47With one single shot.
50:50I think he maybe just has.
50:55Enjoy your room.
51:08Sorry, mate.
51:29That's my hat.
51:38Hey, Sol.
51:51Look.
51:52I just got home and I saw you brought all my stuff back.
51:56Oh, you know.
51:57Worth the old Salomon Clark magic.
52:00Yeah, well, I just wanted to say thank you.
52:02Did you have to give my little money back?
52:04I mean, you're not in debt still, are you?
52:06Ah, don't worry yourself.
52:07Anyway, man.
52:08Got to get a boat back to Antigua.
52:10Got some business over there that needs attendant.
52:13Of course you have.
52:14I mean, there's always something going on in Solomon land, right?
52:17You said it.
52:20Um, look.
52:23What about us now?
52:27I mean, what do we do next?
52:30I don't know, man.
52:32Like you said, I am troubled.
52:34The detective doesn't need that in his life.
52:37Look, Sol.
52:38I didn't mean...
52:39Maybe I shouldn't have said that.
52:41No disrespect to you, bro, but...
52:44Ain't much good to me having a police officer around.
52:47Got a reputation at the key.
52:49Yeah, yeah.
52:50No, I...
52:51Help me understand.
52:52Look, man.
52:53We tried this and...
52:54Maybe it just wasn't meant to be here, no?
52:56Look after yourself, brother.
52:57Yeah, you do.
52:58Look, Solomon, I...
53:13Look after yourself, brother.
53:18Happy Happy Mona, you do your learning in the Lana, and what you're doing is runner.
53:37I saw you passing by.
53:43Hello, neighbor.
53:47Quiet morning.
53:48Was.
53:49Henry Ashby moved to St. Marie 10 years ago.
53:52Henry was definitely mixed up in something murky.
53:54The victim's copy of this book was missing from his bookshelf.
53:57So, where is it?
53:58I need to reassure you that this island still matters.
54:03Why did the detective knock by the swing of?
54:06Why was your moped seen outside the victim's villa up in the hills?
54:10Did you ever catch them, Inspector?
54:11I sleep much better knowing you did.
54:13It wasn't.
