00:30Hello, everybody.
00:32Thursday, June the 26th is here.
00:34And today is the day we ink in the name of the second finalist of Series 91 of Countdown.
00:40Tell the truth, we've already cheated a bit.
00:42We've penciled in the name, Tim, just the surname to sort out over the next 15 rounds of letters and numbers.
00:49I'm watching it all, of course, as our guardian of the dictionary, Susie Dent.
00:53Alongside all this week, music broadcasting legend and friend to every single musician who's ever walked the planet.
01:01It's whispering Bob Harrison, shouting out loud from the board, it's our Rachel Riley.
01:07And, Rach, we always talk about an anniversary or whatever at the top of the programme, which we love.
01:11This seems a little dull.
01:12Trust me, I think it's quite interesting.
01:141974 was the first scanning of a universal barcode packet of chewing gum in Ohio before anyone messages in.
01:24But I really didn't think about how they work.
01:27Like, I know it's light and there's bars.
01:29Is it mathematical for you or is it coding or a bit of both?
01:33Yeah, it's maths.
01:34I think it's just that long digit at the bottom, the eight or 13-digit number.
01:38It's just a way to write that in ones or noughts.
01:42So it's just a code that you have to transpose to have the light and the dark.
01:45And that's pretty much a barcode in a nutshell.
01:48All right, let's shine a light on today's two semi-finalists.
01:51It's second seed against third.
01:53Little fact for all the countdowners watching.
01:56There's just a little over one point on average during the run to OctoChamp between our two Tims.
02:02The Golden Gate is the slightly higher seed by that much.
02:08And Tim Bridgestock is in the champions chair for that.
02:10How are you, sir?
02:12I'm very well, thank you.
02:13Yeah.
02:13You survived a crucial countdown conundrum, but it was a great score of 99.
02:19So even though it was hairy, your confidence should be high.
02:23I think I've got a chance.
02:25I think Tim may be a class apart, but it'll be a good game.
02:29Tim B, you will be from here on in.
02:32This could get confusion.
02:33You're up against Tim J.
02:34I was going to call you TJ, but then I'd have to call him TB.
02:37And that just sounds all wrong, you know.
02:39They'll change your nickname to the illness.
02:41But no, how are you feeling, Tim J?
02:43Because you also survived a crucial.
02:45But can I just point out, both of you did not get the crucials in your quarterfinals.
02:49So how are you feeling?
02:50Yeah, pretty good.
02:52I mean, that was such a close quarterfinal.
02:53I couldn't believe it when I got through.
02:56And, yeah, anything else, absolute bonus, really.
02:59So let's play Countdown.
03:03Can't be it for this.
03:04It is going to be fantastic.
03:05And Tim B, you're picking the first letters.

06:09Seven's all the way.
06:10So Tim B and Tim J, top scoring as far as we can see so far.
06:15So if you were both nervous, you're not showing any signs.
06:18Let's get on to the numbers.
06:19Tim B, can we have three large, please?
06:21We can indeed.
06:22I wonder if the numbers are going to make a big difference today.

11:00Tim J? Just a six.
11:03This could be the moment. Six is...?
11:06Covers. And the eight? Coverage.
11:09Absolutely brilliant, yes. Well done.
11:11Very good.
11:12APPLAUSE
11:14I'm afraid, Mr James, you're going to have to put that one out of your head
11:18very, very quickly.
11:19An eight-point lead for Mr Bridgestock.
11:22How do we get on in Dictionary Corner?
11:24Well, if you put an S on the end of coverage,
11:28you get coverages.
11:30Yes, I could see Tim was weighing that one up.
11:32For a nine.
11:33It's a very specific definition, though,
11:35so it's a mass noun in almost every case,
11:37apart from American football,
11:39the manner in which a defender or a defensive team covers a player.
11:42I think it's best we turn the board round.
11:44I agree.
11:45And we get our second numbers round,
11:46and you're going to pick these four as Tim James.
11:48Six small, please.
11:50Six little ones, yes.
11:51We're not going to have too many easy ones
11:54if the gap's this small.
11:56Six little ones.
11:57Let's see what challenge we have.
11:58They're 10, 7, 9, 8, 3 and 4.
12:04And the target?
12:05504.
12:06504.
12:07Numbers up.

12:28The aim to fit.
12:33A skill choice is to decide a unique capacity from your calendar.
12:355.04, Tim James.
12:40Yeah, 5.04.
12:41Tim Bridgestock?
12:425.04.
12:43Yeah, thoughts so?
12:44Off you go.
12:45Seven times eight times nine.
12:48Perfect.
12:48504.
12:50Same weight?
12:50Same numbers in a different order.
12:53Can't accept it.
12:54Cannot accept it.
12:55Right, well done to you.
12:57So the gap is just for coverage.
13:00It could have been so much more with that S
13:02as we have our chat today with Whisper and Bob Harris.
13:07Now, does anyone want to guess where we're going,
13:09which superstar we're going with?
13:10I think he's got a big name for the second semi-final, I think.
13:15It's a big festival.
13:17I'll do.
13:18Actually, Colin.
13:19You know, because through the years,
13:22I've attended and compared some great music festivals,
13:26you know, Reading, Isle of Wight years ago,
13:29Country to Country.
13:30But there was one festival that I went to in the early 2000s
13:35that sticks in my memory
13:37as being one of the most beautiful experiences I've ever had.
13:40It was Merlfest in the Blue Ridge Mountains,
13:44a place called Wilkesboro, North Carolina.
13:47Yeah.
13:48And the main stage was called the cabin stage.
13:52And it's set back against a hill of trees
13:55that just stretched up almost out of sight.
13:58And at night, they put spotlights up into the mountainside.
14:03So the trees were sort of haloing the main stage.
14:08It was the most beautiful, beautiful place.
14:10And I was walking around the edge of the crowd
14:12with Chris Thiele,
14:14who's from a lovely group called Nickel Creek,
14:17who were discovered years ago by Alison Krauss.
14:20And Chris always had his mandolin on him, always.
14:25And we were walking around the edge of the crowd
14:27and there was a family gathering.
14:30Just as we passed,
14:31this little girl had got a little banjo.
14:36Her brother had a six-string guitar.
14:40And as we walked past,
14:41Chris stopped and said,
14:43hang on a second,
14:43hand me the guitar, hand me the banjo.
14:45And he tuned them
14:46and then handed them back to the kids.
14:49Amazing.
14:49And then started playing along with them.
14:52And the next thing we know
14:53is we're sitting down with this family,
14:55you know, in the sunshine on the grass,
14:57with Chris holding this sort of impromptu jam session.
15:01It was a great festival experience.
15:03Brilliant.
15:03Thanks for taking us on another journey.
15:05Appreciate it.
15:07Right, 47, it's 39.
15:11Let's get back to those letters.
15:13Tim B's got his nose in front and his pecanese.
15:16Could we have a consonant, please?
15:18Thank you, Tim.
15:19D.
15:20And another.
15:22N.
15:23And a third.
15:25S.
15:27And a fourth.
15:29R.
15:30A vowel.
15:32I.
15:33Another vowel.
15:34U.
15:35Another vowel.
15:37E.
15:40A fourth vowel.
15:42I.
15:44And a final consonant, please.
15:46A final D.
15:49And start the clock.
15:49R.
15:50R.
16:20Tim B? I'm going to try an eight.
16:23And Tim James? Just a six.
16:26OK, the six is? Sudden.
16:28And the eight, sundried?
16:31Ooh, um, no.
16:34This has been tried before, Tim.
16:36It's hyphenated, I'm afraid.
16:38Not even there is sundried.
16:40So, no can do, I'm sorry.
16:42Fair enough. What was there? Six or above.
16:44We've got... I've got insider.
16:47A nice spot. Well done.
16:48Which is a seven, isn't it?
16:49A few sevens, actually. Two sevens.
16:52Yeah, insured. Yeah.
16:54And ruggies. Ruggies.
16:56Make red in appearance.
16:58Oh, very good indeed.
17:00So, look at that. Just turns, doesn't it,
17:02on one word and all of a sudden everything's so tense.
17:05Well done, Tim J. Off you go.

17:42Start the clock.
17:53Tim J.
18:14Nine.
18:15Tim B.
18:16Eight.
18:17What a programme this is.
18:19All right, the eight?
18:21Bloaters.
18:22Right.
18:22Now, it has to be in first.
18:24So, what is it?
18:25Strobuli.
18:26What?
18:28Don't know if it's how to pronounce it.
18:29S-T-R-O-B-I-L-A-E.
18:32S-T-R-O-B-I-L-A-E.
18:37Strobuli.
18:37Absolutely right with the Latin plural.
18:40Yes, we didn't see this one, if you could not tell that already.
18:43Segmented parts of the body of a tapeworm in the plural.
18:47Strobuli.
18:47Well done.
18:48Wow.
18:48APPLAUSE
18:49Let me speak on behalf of 99.9% of the nation.
18:55We still can't see it, and Rachel's put it out on the board.
18:58Talk to us.
18:59Wow.
19:00Yeah.
19:01Fantastic.
19:01So, strobuli is just that, part of a body of a tapeworm, and give it the Latin plural,
19:07we get the A at the end.
19:08Well done.
19:09Well, listen, who'd bet against Tim B, taking 10 points here, and closing the gap again?
19:13It's been that type of show, Tim.
19:14Off you go.
19:14Well, let's go for three large again, please.
19:17Three large, and we need something tricky.
19:20We need to get those points back for you, Tim.
19:22Let's see if you can.
19:23Little ones, one.
19:24Ten and two.
19:26Big ones, 50.
19:27One hundred and seventy-five.
19:30And this target, 227.
19:32Two to seven.

20:10Off you go, my friend.
20:11Two plus one is three.
20:12Two plus one, three.
20:14Times the 75.
20:16Two to five.
20:17And then 100 over 50 for two to add on.
20:20Yep.
20:21That's actually the complicated way to get it on this one, yeah.
20:24Off you go.
20:25I added the first four together.
20:26Yeah.
20:2675, 150, and two.
20:28Last time you times these together, this time you just add the first four.
20:31Excellent.
20:32Right, our second Tea Time teaser, which I swear producer Damien has put in just to troll me.
20:40It's cause out.
20:42Cause out.
20:43They can cause you to look a bit silly if they're out of sync.
20:46They can cause you to look a bit silly if they're out of sync.

22:46All right, the gap remains the same as we get another letters round in before.
22:51Origins of words are number two seed behind, but certainly not out of range.

23:43Tim B, six.
24:06Tim J, try a seven.
24:09Going to try a seven to blow this wide open, right?
24:12The six. Outrun.
24:13What are you going to try? This is a risk. Outruns.
24:16Oh, yes, Tim. The other Tim.
24:19Yes, outrun is in the dictionary, so outruns would be a seven.
24:24That's exactly what you're doing right now,
24:26so the word really fits the bill.
24:28What else did we uncover in Dictionary Corner?
24:31Snorts.
24:33I like that.
24:35Yes, snorts were six. Outruns was our only seven.
24:38Outruns was the one, yeah.
24:39All right. 86-63. Let's get our heads around that.
24:4323 points in it.
24:44It's important to say that because in a normal countdown,
24:48that's a chasm.
24:49It really isn't with the calibre of contestant we have today.
24:52So let's just take a breath and get origins of words.
24:55Well, thanks to Mike Melia,
24:57who emailed to ask about the expression towing the line
25:01and where that comes from.
25:02And interestingly, Mike has spelt towing, T-O-W-I-N-G.
25:07We have tow line on the show quite often as a possible word.
25:12But the original is not about towing.
25:15It's about towing.
25:17It's about your feet.
25:18And it's spelt T-O-E-I-N-G.
25:21And there are several theories as to where this comes from.
25:24One is that it's from military parade grounds
25:26and that soldiers would have to come up to a certain line,
25:29almost up to scratch, which in sporting terms was a line drawn.
25:33And they would have to stay there during their drills.
25:37Another one, which is really popular,
25:40takes us to the House of Commons and Parliament.
25:43And it said that there were lines drawn, etched onto the floor,
25:47which would separate members of the opposition,
25:49which was pretty important because these lines
25:51were at least two swords length.
25:53And you will still find that some of the officers
25:58in the House of Parliament, they still have ceremonial swords.
26:03It is a symbol of office.
26:05And not only that, but loops of pink ribbon,
26:08apparently in the members' cloakroom,
26:09are hung still today for MPs to hang their swords on.
26:13So it's not too much of a stretch of the truth.
26:16However, there are no lines that we know of in the House of Commons,
26:19either past or present.
26:20By far the most likely origin is the Royal Navy.
26:24It goes back to the 17th century
26:25when you would have shipboard line-ups on wooden planked ships.
26:30And lines really would be etched.
26:32They would pretty much be the seams, if you like,
26:34of the planks themselves.
26:37So either the seams would work or there were actual physical lines.
26:40And sailors would have to stand there during calls or inspections.
26:44And we do know from 1831,
26:46one sailor writes of standing on quarter deck
26:49and being subjected to scoldings if they came over the line.
26:53And these scoldings were called toe-the-line matches.
26:56So that seems to be our very best bet, towing the line.
26:59Brilliant story. Thank you.
27:00You're welcome.
27:03OK, four rounds to go.
27:05Tim James, our number three seed,
27:07with a 23-point lead.
27:10Pick in these letters.

27:13Thank you, Tim.

28:24so I shall go for seven.
28:26OK, Tim J, these five points could all but end at mimes.
28:31Now, how silly is silly?
28:34Jemmies.
28:35Jemmies?
28:36We're in the dictionary.
28:37They are burglars crowbars.
28:39Not that you would ever have used one, but, yeah,
28:42short crowbars are used by burglars to force things open.
28:45Wow, and just like that, you've crowbarred in a word
28:50and you've jimmied open just a little bit of light.
28:5316 points in it now.
28:55Last letters and all of a sudden Tim B,
28:58Tim J just shifted slightly in his chair.

30:24Amnesia?
30:25Amnesia?
30:26Yeah.
30:27Yep, seminal.
30:28Yeah.
30:29All adds up to the same thing, and it adds up to this simple fact.
30:33Tim James is choosing the last numbers,
30:35and as long as he does the same or better than Tim Bridgestock,
30:39it is over.
30:41Tim, your choice.
30:42One large and five small things.
30:44Can't tempt you to get on board, no.
30:46One large, five, little you are the simplest,
30:48most straightforward, one second, one of all time.
30:51Let's have a look.
30:52Be a ticket for the final.
30:53Last numbers, two, one, three, four, seven,
30:59and the large one, 75.
31:01And the target, 728.
31:03728, numbers up.
31:157-2-8, Tim James.
31:377-2-9.
31:38Missed it by one, Tim Bridgestock.
31:41I think I'm moving the 10 away.
31:42Oh, wow! What a moment.
31:44Well done, Tim James, but off you go for 7 points.
31:477-75-2.
31:5075-2, 73.
31:537 plus 3.

31:56Times them together.
31:57730.
31:58Take away one.
31:59Yep, there you go. That's your place secured.
32:027-2-8.
32:04Oh, my goodness. How is this so difficult, Rachel?
32:06You have to leave it with me. I was the same,
32:08trying lots of methods and getting nowhere.
32:10My goodness, look at that.
32:11Well, Tim James is through their final.
32:12Not only that, just notched up a big century under pressure.
32:18Tim Bridgestock on 77 at the moment.
32:21Let's see if you can go out with a bang.
32:22Fingers on the buzzers.
32:24Are two Tims and just one countdown conundrum.
32:27We'll see if you can go out and see if you think we're going to find out.
32:36Bye.
32:36Bye.
32:37Bye.
32:38Bye.

32:53Tim B.
32:59An umbocracy.
33:01Oh, yes, I used to live in one of those.
33:03Not a good life. Let's have a look.
33:05No, of course not.
33:07Have a guess. Ready?
33:08Three, two, one, go.
33:10Come on, have a bit of fun.
33:12I can't see anything.
33:13Hold on a second. Give me another 35 minutes.
33:15I think I'll be able to get it.
33:17No, absolutely bamboozled by it.
33:20Let's reveal it.
33:22Oh, you weren't fine.
33:23Oh, my goodness me.
33:25Not far away.
33:26A mobocracy? Mob rule?
33:27Mob rule, exactly.
33:29So Tim was almost there.
33:30Goodness me. Well done.
33:32Listen, Tim, let me say this,
33:34and I know you'll get what I mean
33:35because you played the game in such good spirit.
33:37It feels like because of that nine,
33:39the right person won,
33:40you probably feel quite good about it.
33:43Yeah, I think the better player won there.
33:45And we've got a good final tomorrow.
33:47And your head must be absolutely spinning right now.
33:50Really? Yeah, very much so.
33:52We'll see you tomorrow for the final.
33:53Brilliant. Love it.
33:55Thank you, Bob.
33:55Thank you, Susie.
33:57Cheers, Cullen.
33:57Small matter of seven to eight.
34:00Yeah, a couple of ways to get there.
34:02We all missed it.
34:03But you could have said 75 divided by three is 25.
34:06Add one for 26.
34:08And then four times seven is 28.
34:11And 28 times 26 is 728.
34:14Brilliant.
34:15Lovely.
34:17Never in doubt.
34:18What a show today.
34:19And if today was the tale of the tapeworm,
34:21the tale of the tape tomorrow is one heck of a final.
34:24Our number one seed,
