00:00Thank you
00:30Well good afternoon, welcome to the Countdown studio. Here we are, Bankholdy Monday, and it's a hundred years ago, this very day, since poor old L. Frank Baum pegged it.
00:42Who, you cry? He's the chap that wrote The Wizard of Oz. Classic, a classic. He's been turned into so many things, films and stage shows and all the rest of it, and of course with some wonderful characters in The Wizard of Oz. Fantastic.
00:56Fantastic. None perhaps more memorable than The Wicked Witch of the West. What a brute she was. Do you remember?
01:04Mm-hmm.
01:04The long nose and all this. Oh, of course there are many terrible people in literature. Who would you claim perhaps to be your favourite wicked person in literature?
01:15Well, I think the worst one is in Game of Thrones. Oh, now you're talking to the uninitiated.
01:20OK, there's a guy called Ramsay Bolton. You don't want to mess with him. He messed with someone and he cut off a part of his body that he probably would rather have kept.
01:32He cut off?
01:33It's called Ramsay Bolton, and I went to a lovely event with David Attenborough there for the environment and for animals, and the actor was there.
01:42And I thought, I'm not going near him. He's a tiny little Welshman, but the character is so infamous.
01:48Really?
01:48And I have actually met the actor as well, Alfie Allen, who had part of his body cut off at the football, so he seemed fine.
01:55He seemed fine. He's all right about it.
01:56He walks OK.
01:57He walks fine.
01:58I know that you're a big fan of that show.
02:01Yeah.
02:01It's been going a long time now.
02:03Well, it's the last series now, and then it's what I do with my life.
02:07Really?
02:07Yeah.
02:08Do you know, I'm ashamed to say I've never seen one single film.
02:10That's perfect, because you can box set the whole thing now.
02:12Perfect. How many episodes would there have been in the whole thing, do you reckon?
02:16Oh, 70-odd, I'm not sure. I think it's something like eight series.
02:22Twelve a series, and all the rest of it.
02:24They did fewer per series, though the longer it went on, because I think it's the most expensive programme ever made,
02:30so each episode is like a feature film. It's brilliant.
02:34Amazing.
02:35Sort of thing for Desert Island.
02:37Oh, you'll entertain yourself for however many hours of footage there is. It's brilliant.
02:41Perfect. All right. Thanks for that tip. Lovely.
02:43Now, who's back? Rachel, we've got Katie back.
02:47Katie Wolvin, a data entry operator from Workshop.
02:49Three wins on Friday, going in for the fourth today.
02:53Yep.
02:54Brilliant. Well done.
02:55And you're joined by Sandra, Sandra Pilsen, a management consultant from Whiston, near Rotherham, who loves to travel.
03:02And what intrigued me about the notes here is that, okay, you've been skiing in France, you went cruising around South America,
03:09but you drove across Canada, a road trip. Who did you go with?
03:15Just with my best friend, a bit Thelma and Louise style, across the Rockies.
03:20How brilliant. How long did that take?
03:22Just three weeks we had.
03:23Was it really wonderful scenery, food, people, what?
03:27Well, I hate the word awesome, but I came back saying it all the time,
03:31because you just see such spectacular scenery across, you know, every corner you turn around.
03:37Yeah.
03:37It's just magnificent.
03:39And not too many people walking around.
03:41Er, no. It's really friendly and great food, and if you love the outdoors, you've got to go.
03:47I'm going.
03:47Yeah.
03:47Thank you very much, Sandra. Excellent. Big round of applause now for Sandra and Katie.
03:51Yeah, Canada.
03:58A wide open space. It's over in the corner there, in the wide open space over there in the corner.
04:03Susie, and joined for the last time until we get him back, it's the wonderful Al Murray.
04:10Al.
04:10Now, Katie, off we go.
04:17Hi, Rachel.

05:33Yeah.
05:34It would be two Ds for sure, I'm afraid. Sorry, Katie.
05:37I thought so.
05:38Al and Susie.
05:39Yes, so we have godlike.
05:41Yep.
05:42And we can do even better than that, can't we?
05:44Yes, you can have sidelong, sidelong smile, sidelong glance.

14:51Well done.
14:52Well done.
14:54Very good.
14:56So, 41 plays 14.
14:59Sandra, blistering pace you set there.
15:01But now we turn to Al.
15:03Al Murray.
15:04Look at this.
15:05Landlord of hope and glory.
15:06A 40-city tour.
15:08Yes.
15:09How tough is that?
15:10And what are you going to give them?
15:11Well, the last thing I'm going to do is complain about my terrible life in show business.
15:16People at home don't want to hear about how being a comedian is ghastly and lonely and depressing.
15:21But I rather feel I know my way around too many motorway service stations.
15:28More than a man ought to.
15:31And I spend a great deal of my time travelling.
15:33I love the shows.
15:34I love gigs.
15:35I love audiences.
15:36I love doing my pub landlord waffle to people.
15:39But some of the to and fro involved can get to you.
15:45My tour manager always says we know we're in the right place if we're by the bins.
15:49Because stage doors.
15:51If the car stops and we're by a skip, I know we've arrived.
15:54Whereas if we stop somewhere nice, I don't get out of the car.
15:59So it skips, it's stage doors, it's bin bags.
16:02And we tend to go to a stage door, to a hotel, to another stage door.
16:06And life's in this not particularly glamorous cycle.
16:10And sometimes I get a very profound Groundhog Day thing.
16:14And there was a there's a hotel in Birmingham, a very nice hotel in Birmingham.
16:17We don't stay at anymore because one evening I sat down at the bar and it was the same barman who'd been there 18 months previously.
16:23He poured me the same wine.
16:25I was in the same room.
16:27He asked me, how are you?
16:28What have you done since I last saw you?
16:30And I said, I don't know.
16:31Because the 18 months had just vanished because it was all so familiar.
16:36So the schlepping of it is tiring and annoying and boring and frustrating.
16:43But I absolutely love theatres and audiences.
16:46And, you know, I got into this because I like the applause of strangers.
16:50Because I'm a...
16:51You get a kick out of the smell of the crowd.
16:53Absolutely, yeah.
16:54Nothing beats audiences.
16:56I mean, listen to this one now.
17:01How into it they are.
17:04You know, nothing really gets any better than the thrill of an audience hanging on your every word.
17:09Am I right?
17:13I'm a shameless Huckster, Nick.
17:15It's as simple as that.
17:17But, yeah, I love touring.
17:18And what's been really interesting the last few years is events have moved quite rapidly and sometimes in unexpected directions.
17:26And so shows have to be rewritten in a great rush and changed.
17:30And that's fun.
17:32That's a challenge.
17:33Because when you've been doing it as long as I have, you want to be sort of refreshed when you come to it.
17:38So events, dear boy.
17:40Yeah.
17:40Well, next Wednesday, it's Chelmsford, then Stoke, then Wrexham, Bedford, St Albans.
17:45It goes on and on.
17:4740 cities.
17:48Yeah.
17:48I hope it's a huge success.
17:49Thank you very much.
17:50And I'm playing...
17:50Where you've been, I've been Leeds City Varieties, where you've just been.
17:55I've just been, yeah.
17:56You were on the board and you'd signed a guest book.
17:59And it's nice to go somewhere where your friends have been.
18:03That's right.
18:04Because, of course, Susie's on to it.
18:05But I'm going to talk a little bit later about her.
18:08All right.
18:09And now we turn to Katie.

25:51It's good.
25:52Having it both ways there with the letters.
25:54Yeah.
25:55Seven.
25:56The best we could do, reviled and builder first.
25:5976 to 49.
26:02Susie, you're on.
26:04It's your origins of words, Susie.
26:07Well, thanks to Danny Morris, who asks why we speak of someone having a chip on their shoulder.
26:14He guesses it has nothing to do with French fries, and he would be right.
26:18You have to go back to the 1800s, and you have to go back to North America.
26:23And although we use chip on the shoulder these days to mean that someone's got a grudge about something,
26:28you know, some grievance over some harm that they believe has been inflicted upon them,
26:34it was originally all about bare fisticuffs.
26:38So if you go back to the Long Island Telegraph in the early 19th century,
26:42you'll find the explanation that when two churlish boys were determined to fight,
26:46a chip would be placed on the shoulder of one,
26:48and the other demanded to knock it off at his peril.
26:52In other words, it was the equivalent of a medieval knight throwing down his gauntlet
26:56or a wronged party challenging somebody to a duel.
26:59It was pretty much the same thing.
27:01But in this case, if the opponent knocked the chip off the shoulder,
27:05the fight was on, and onlookers would gather,
27:08and you'd have a big sort of scuffle wherever it was.
27:12Pretty much, I guess, sort of putting a chip on your shoulder is like throwing your hat into the ring,
27:17which is, of course, another expression that comes from the same thing.
27:19You threw your hat in, you were ready to fight.
27:22But how it got from there to the kind of grievance bit is a little bit murky,
27:26but it seemed to move from this kind of physical squabbling to any display of bad temper
27:31or quickness to take offence, really.
27:33And that is how, of course, we use it today.
27:36But chip on the shoulder goes back to a very real chip,
27:38just not a potato one.
27:39It was a wooden one.
27:41It's a wooden one.
27:41Yeah.
27:46I was wondering all along, a chip of what?
27:49Oh, sorry.
27:49So it's a little chip of wood, is it?
27:51Chip of wood.
27:52All right.
