00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:35And we're continuing now with our wonderful Champion of Champions Tournament.
00:40An exciting, exciting tournament it's been.
00:43And we go into the final match before the quarterfinals kick off.
00:48So, very special.
00:49But very special for another reason.
00:51They say, oh, there's one born every minute.
00:54Well, I can't name the minute or the hour.
00:56But I can say that 30 years ago, Ma Reilly gave a groan.
01:02And Pa Reilly gave an absolute shriek of delight.
01:06Because, Rachel Reilly, you popped into the world 30 years ago.
01:10Happy birthday to you, Rachel.
01:11Yes, nice birthday to you.
01:13Well done.
01:16Now, I don't know what sort of presents you're getting today.
01:20I wonder if you'll receive anything as extravagant as this.
01:24The most expensive jewel ever sold at auction.
01:2832 million big ones.
01:3032 million pounds.
01:33The 12-carat blue diamond was bought by some businessman or other.
01:37And then presented to his seven-year-old daughter.
01:39Seven years old.
01:40Seven years old.
01:41But what's it...
01:42I mean, this little girl, I bet he's going to grab it back a little bit later.
01:44Well, what's she going to get for her 18th or her 21st or her 30th?
01:48The big, big one.
01:49Exactly.
01:50The big one.
01:50Well, happy birthday to you.
01:52Thank you very much.
01:52And I hope you have a wonderful time tonight.
01:54Lovely.
01:55Now then, birthday girl, who have we got?
01:56Rachel, we've got Callum Todd, a lab technician from Leeds.
02:00Last on the show as champion back in 2013.
02:05It's been a while since you were here.
02:06How's it been?
02:07Yeah, it's been good.
02:08It's been two years since I was last here, so it's good to be back.
02:10Still playing at home and so forth?
02:13No, so it'll be interesting to see how this goes.
02:17That is not the right answer, Captain.
02:19It should be a lot of debate.
02:19You are devoted to Countdown.
02:21But you're joined, I think, by a great guy, Samir Pilica.
02:26Samir is from London, a post office customer advisor, came in June 2014 as an octo champ and a semi-finalist.
02:33And I was so impressed because, of course, it's not long that you didn't speak any English at all.
02:40That's correct, yeah.
02:41Fantastic.
02:41From Bosnia, you came here, you've got a job and learnt English to such an extent that your vocabulary is so wide that you became a semi-finals on Countdown.
02:50I think that's amazing.
02:51So welcome our contestants, Samir and Callum.
03:00Hanging in the corner, Susie, of course, on this Monday, joined once again by John Inverdale, a regular on this show, TV and radio sports presenter.
03:08Welcome back, John.
03:09Great to be here, Nick, in such august company as well.
03:12I know.
03:13I wish you both great good fortune as Callum kicks off with a letters game.

04:38Nine as well.
04:40Well, confident nine.
04:41Callum?
04:42Valorised.
04:44Mm-hmm, Samir?
04:45Valorised as well.
04:46Both of you?
04:48We came up with valorised as well.
04:50At least I didn't, but Susie did.
04:52All right.
04:53And valorised means what?
04:55Give value to something.
04:56Give validity to something.
04:58Valorised.
05:01I'm trusting.
05:03Valor.
05:04All right.
05:0518 apiece.
05:06Well done, guys.
05:07That's one way to kick off the champion of champions show.
05:10All right.

06:22Diaper.
06:23Diaper and paired.
06:26And paired.
06:27Absolutely fine.
06:28Yes.
06:29Can you beat six, chaps?
06:30No, we've got peaked.
06:32As in P-I-Q-U-E-D.
06:34But that's six as well.
06:35That's the best we could do.
06:36Pretty good.
06:3724 points apiece.
06:39Callum, it's numbers time.
06:42Could I have six small ones, please, Rachel?
06:43You can indeed.
06:44Thank you, Callum.
06:45Six little numbers to kick us off this week.
06:47And for this challenge, they are four, nine, two.
06:52Another two.
06:53Eight, seven.
06:55And the target, 161.
06:58One, six, one.
07:01One, six, one.
07:31One, six, one.
07:32Not fully written down.
07:34Samir?
07:35One, six, zero.
07:37One, six, zero.
07:38Callum.
07:38Okay, I did eight times two is 16.
07:41Yep.
07:42Add the seven.
07:43Four, 23.
07:44And then nine minus two gets you another seven.
07:46It does indeed.
07:47And then multiply that by the 23.
07:49Perfect.
07:49One, six, one.
07:53Giving Callum a ten-point lead now.
07:55Thirty-four to twenty-four.
07:57Let's have a tea-time teaser.
07:59It's itchy sea.
08:01And the clue.
08:02These people are always itching to get on the sea.
08:05These people are always itching to get on the sea.
08:08One welcome back.
08:25I left you with a clue.

09:48Yeah, Samir's Osteria is an interesting one.
09:52It's an Italian restaurant.
09:53Typically a simple or inexpensive one.
09:55Osteria.
09:56Very good.
09:56Yeah.
09:57We had rather more mundane words, like artiste and rotates, but we also had the eight of tostia.
10:04Well done.
10:04Well done.
10:05All right.
10:05So, forty-two to twenty-four.

11:18And Samir?
11:19Amniote.
11:21Amniote?
11:22Yeah, I saw the countdown words coming back.
11:24Amniote is all about embryonic stage of a mammal in amniotic fluid.
11:29It's all related to that.
11:31Omental is related to the omentum, which is a fold of peritoneum connecting the stomach with other organs.
11:38Two good countdown words.
11:40Well done.
11:40John?
11:42What have you got?
11:43I'm feeling overwhelmed already.
11:44We've barely got to the second ad break.
11:47I've got words like ailment, which is kind of more my level.
11:50And then we had matinee as well.
11:53Well done.
11:5349, please.
11:5431.
11:55And we're with numbers.
11:57And it's Samir's numbers game.
11:58Samir?
11:59One last, please, Rachel.
12:00Thank you, Samir.
12:01One from the top row and five little ones coming up.
12:05And this time, your numbers are three, four, seven, nine, another three, and the big one, 100.
12:13And the target, 861.
12:16861.
12:16861.
12:19Let's check on найд часов.
12:38Samir?
12:48860.
12:49861 away, Callum?
12:51861.
12:53861.
12:54Got a mathematician here.
12:56So?
12:58100 minus 4.
12:59100 minus 4, 96.
13:01Times that by 9.
13:02Times it by 9 for 864.
13:05And take away 3.
13:06Well done, 861.
13:07Well done indeed.
13:09Well done.
13:12Yeah, you see why Callum was a champ.
13:16Let's turn to John.
13:18John, what beckons you this year?
13:21Rio.
13:22You lucky, lucky man.
13:23I know, lucky man.
13:24Looking forward to it massively.
13:25I mean, the summer's going to be full of all these images of the Cork of Varda and Sugarloaf Mountain.
13:29And I do think, actually, I've seen some of the venues and they are just going to be spellbinding.
13:33I mean, they really, really are.
13:34I mean, like the triathlon, you know, just starts on the Copacabana Beach, as you do.
13:39You know, so if there's any, you know, if there's any event you want to take part in, it's that.
13:42Anyway, so I thought, but, you know, in the run-up, here we are, you know, at the start of the new year.
13:47And it's still, a lot of the publicity about the Olympics at the moment is very negative because of all the Russian drug issues.
13:53And there are maybe other people who are going to get dragged into that, you suspect, as well, between now and the summer.
13:58So I thought I'd try and lighten things by just telling a few tales of Olympics past that shows us sort of the humanity and also the absurdity of Olympic Games over the last century or so.
14:07And I was just looking up odd incidents, like, for instance, a guy called Sumner Payne, who won the first shooting gold medal in 1896 in Athens, which he did with the aid of a whiskey flask, which he drank from copiously between each shot.
14:23So can you imagine what he was like by the end of it?
14:25But anyway, but it actually served him very well five years later when he was charged for the attempted murder of his wife's lover.
14:33And his defence was that as he'd shot this guy, or he had aimed at this guy from point-blank range and missed, as an Olympic champion, he must have missed deliberately because otherwise he would surely have actually taken him out.
14:47So as a consequence of which the police dismissed all the charges.
14:50Anyway, so I thought, well, that's an interesting alcohol and sportsman.
14:53But I thought I'd just finish today, because you're a real softie, and you will love this story, about an Australian rower called Henry Pearce at the Olympics in Amsterdam in 1920.
15:04He actually won the gold medal in the single skulls, but in his quarterfinal, he was miles clear and literally hammered on the brakes, and everybody caught him up and almost got him on the line.
15:16Why did he hammer on the brakes, your starter for ten, to mix questions?
15:21Did you make others feel better for not losing to a pump height?
15:25No. There was a flotilla of baby ducklings going in front of him, and he couldn't bear the thought of taking any of them out.
15:32So he ground to a halt and kept going just quickly enough to win the quarterfinal on the line by that much.
15:39Got to the semi-final, got to the final, won the gold medal.
15:43A kind of, for that humanitarian gesture alone, I think he deserved to be a great Olympic champion.
15:48Lovely stuff. Well done.
15:49But I think, you know, that Susie's explanation tells you everything you need to know about Susie, because that's exactly what she would have done, so as not to be showing off, and to enable everybody else to feel that they haven't been thrashed.
16:07Had I known the ducks were involved, I would have gone for the ducks, had I known, because it's actually, when you're rowing, it's very easy to take out a duck. You have to be very careful.
16:14Well, you wouldn't know, it'd scuttle out of the way, wouldn't it?
16:17Well, usually they do, but sometimes they don't, especially if they're...
16:20Have you killed on the water?
16:21I've never killed, personally.
16:22What is the collected man for ducklings?
16:26Um, do you know, I've no idea. I'm going to look that up.
16:30That's right.
16:30Leave that one with me.
16:31That's, well, shameful, I think.
16:33What, actually, what, guys, do you know?
16:35Meat.
16:36Oh, what?
16:37Meat?
16:37A meat of ducklings.
16:41A water kill of ducklings.
16:42There's a flock, a badling, a paddling, and a plump.
16:46I like the plump.
16:47A plump of ducklings.
16:48That's quite nice.
16:49That's a bit like the meat.
16:51All right, Jack.
16:52Well done.
16:53Well done.
16:5359 plays Samir's 31, and it's Callum's letters game now.
16:58Callum.
16:58Could I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
17:00Thank you, Callum.

18:05And eight, Samir?
18:06I think eight as well.
18:08Callum?
18:09Canalise.
18:10Yes, both of you?
18:11Canalise.
18:13Canalise.
18:15And Susie?
18:17That's superb.
18:17It's to convert a river into a navigable canal or simply to convey something through a channel.
18:23Indeed.
18:24And John?
18:26What's John got?
18:28Well, I had snail, which is a bit what I feel like today.
18:31And we also had clans and canoes.
18:36All right.
18:36Canalise takes it, though.
18:38Another canoe.
18:39Yeah.
18:39All right.
18:40Well done.
18:41All right.
18:4167 through 39.

19:58Well done.
19:59And what of the corner?
20:01John?
20:02Well, Susie had Medusa, I had totems.
20:05Yes.
20:06And outdates as well is the best we could come up with.
20:09And you could have Medusa without a capital M?
20:11Yes, it's a jellyfish actually.
20:13Oh, that?
20:14Yes.
20:15Alright.
20:16Not one you'd like to meet.
20:17No.
20:18No, indeed.
20:19Alright, 75-47.
20:20Callum in the lead okay and it's Callum's numbers game now.
20:23Some mathematician Callum is proving to be.
20:26Could I have one large one and five small please?
20:29You can indeed.
20:30Thank you Callum.
20:31One big five little this time.
20:33And these numbers are three, seven, six, ten, four and the big one 50.

23:46Siaj. Siaj. How are you spelling that Samir? Siaj. Siaj. Yes. Candle in French is a wax candle especially one used in religious ceremonies. Very very good.
24:00Very good. Excellent. John. We had kerchief as an eight.
24:05Oh that's good. That's a lie actually. Susie had kerchief. Pass for Hankey. Very good. Kerchief. All right. 85 for Callum. Samir on 63 and it's Callum's letters game. Callum.
24:18Can I have a consonant please Rachel. Thank you Callum. D. And another one please. B. And another one. L. And a vowel please. O. Another vowel. E. And another one.
24:36A. A consonant please. N. A consonant please. D. And a consonant please. And the last one. G. Stand by.
24:54A consonant please.
25:24Well Callum. Seven. And Samir. Six. You're six. Blonde. Blonde and. Dangled. Blonde and dangled.
25:36It's tough on this one. John. Yeah well um. I thought. I had blonde. Yes. And then I thought there had to be a word. A verb to go with that. Blonded.
25:47Yeah. You know I've. I've blonded my hair or something. But it doesn't exist. Not in the dictionary. Sadly.
25:51In the dictionary. Okay. So we had dangled. And we also had a word that I confess I've never heard of. But anyway. Dogbane.
25:57What on earth is that? Dogbane. It's a North American plant. With bell shaped flowers. Um. And so called because it's apparently poisonous to dogs.
26:06Dogbane. Dogbane.
26:06Dogbane. Dogbane. Yeah. Bane of wonders dog. Yeah.
26:09Um. 92 to 63. And now Susie. We're back with you and your wonderful origins of words. What have you for us this Monday afternoon?
26:20Well I don't know how you feel about your star sign Nick. I'm not even sure what star sign you are.
26:26I'm an Aquarian. I'm proud of it. Okay. Um. Well I thought I'd talk a little bit about um horoscopes.
26:32Because obviously it's Rachel's birthday and you're a Capricorn. Um. But I'm going to start with the word horoscope itself.
26:37That goes back to the Greek meaning time observer. The scopo idea is linked to telescope etc.
26:43And the idea of looking. Uh. So you were looking at the time because of course it's based on the idea of forecasting predicting a person's future based on the position of the stars and the constellations at the time of birth.
26:56Uh. Now Rachel's a Capricorn. Uh. That's represented by the goat.
27:00And yeah. Uh. The characteristics that are attributed to Capricorns are being determined, practical, helpful and independent.
27:08That do. Yeah. That's pretty good. Um. And the reference to goats is uh. Relevant.
27:12Because I'm going to move on to the word zodiac. And that comes from the Greek as well.
27:17Uh. For animal and circle. The two words blended together.
27:21And the zodiacos was a circle of little carved animals. Uh. Because the names of the constellations very often given by the Greeks were rooted in Greek mythology.
27:29And they were very much the heroes and the beasts that had performed amazing deeds.
27:34And so were um. Uh. Given memorials if you like in the stars.
27:39Of course in the western zodiac we don't always attribute um animals to the constellations.
27:44But they certainly did then. Um. And the idea of little carved animals is also linked to a zoo believe it or not.
27:51So the zodiac and zoo have a surprising link.
27:54Because back on earth. Uh. Real animals of course. Especially exotic ones have long been a source of fascination.
28:00And the first modern facility that was dedicated to the investigation of animals opened in London in 1828.
28:07They were the zoological gardens of the Royal Zoological Society.
28:12And the word zoological goes back to that same zoo meaning an animal plus uh logica which was the study.
28:18So it was all about the study of animals. In other words as I say there's a very close link and a surprising one for me.
28:23Between the zodiac and the study of animals in a zoo.
28:26Very good. Thank you Susie.
28:32So old the London Zoo.
28:34Yeah 1828. Really? Amazing.
28:38Well the zoological gardens yes. That was mostly for the investigation I think.
28:41And then the sort of observation and visiting.
28:43Yeah. Yeah. Brilliant stuff.
28:4592 to 63. And Samir.
28:48It's a letters game for you.
