00:30Hello, everybody. It's Countdown. It's Thursday afternoon.
00:35In fact, for so many people, it isn't a growing number of people.
00:39Stream Countdown, binge watch us on a Sunday morning.
00:42So whether you're watching in the afternoon or whatever time of the day,
00:45you're all equally as welcome.
00:47Thank you very much for staying with the show, for supporting the show.
00:49Hiya, Rachel. Hi, Colin.
00:51Listen, this day back in 1881,
00:54the Natural History Museum opened its doors in London.
00:58Now, I love this place.
01:00I think it's one of the most magical places on Earth
01:02because it goes back 80 billion years to the history of Earth,
01:06but it's also an active working centre of research.
01:12So whilst looking further back than anywhere you'll go,
01:15it's also helping with the future.
01:16Did you know you could do sleepovers there?
01:18Yes. I haven't done it yet. Do you fancy it?
01:21I've always wanted to do that.
01:23It looks brilliant.
01:23Yeah, I bet.
01:24Yeah.
01:24Well, listen, hang on to your hat here
01:26because this is dirty talk to Susie Dent.
01:28Maybe we'll tell Susie about it.
01:30The guy who founded...
01:32I wrote this down to get it right.
01:33The guy who founded the Natural History Museum
01:36is Richard Owen.
01:38And Richard Owen invented the word dinosaur.
01:42Yeah.
01:42Oh!
01:43Do you know this story?
01:44Well, I know that he called it that
01:46because it means terrible lizard.
01:48Yes.
01:49Yeah.
01:49And all other sores followed.
01:52Yes.
01:52So, yeah.
01:53Two Greek words put together.
01:54Yeah.
01:55Yeah, there you go.
01:55I thought it was a bit of lexicography
01:58she hadn't heard about, but no such chance.
02:00No, you'd have to get up earlier than that.
02:01Exactly, exactly.
02:03Well, there you go.
02:03That's a good way to introduce our Susie Dent.
02:05And the last day for a guy
02:08who's just a ray of light in this studio,
02:10it has to be said, J.B. Gillsback.
02:12J.B.
02:13Yes.
02:15Annie Gallagher is looking to make it to Friday.
02:17Two wins already.
02:20Absolutely lovely to have you back.
02:21And a bit of a career change for you over the while.
02:25Tell us a little bit about it.
02:26You've done a lot for someone who's only 32.
02:28Yes, I've worked in the care industry
02:30after I left school,
02:31and I studied part-time.
02:34And when I graduated in 2020,
02:37then I started working in research
02:38at my local hospital.
02:40OK, so all in and around care,
02:42NHS, et cetera, et cetera, and patients and all that.
02:45That's not a surprise, is it?
02:47It's not a surprise at all, as we've got to know, Annie.
02:49That's brilliant.
02:50Well, listen, looking for the hat trick today,
02:51you're going to have to be George McAleer,
02:53who lives in Essex.
02:55But as you get, guess from the accent,
02:57he certainly wasn't born there.
02:58He's a Glasgow lad.
02:59How are you doing, George?
03:00OK.
03:01Good.
03:01So far.
03:02Look at that.
03:02How long have you lived in Essex?
03:0524 years.
03:07Yeah, you ain't going to lose the accent.
03:08That's not going to happen.
03:09I love this, because people always think
03:12it's weird when I tell them
03:13that I didn't do my driving test
03:15until I was 31.
03:17You can beat that.
03:18How old were you when you passed your driver's test?
03:2163.
03:2263.
03:23And if you don't mind me asking,
03:25why so long did you used to be chauffeur-driven?
03:28Well, no.
03:29Could never afford a car for a start.
03:32Brilliant.
03:32And I took some lessons
03:33and wasn't really getting anywhere.
03:35Yeah.
03:35Then my wife said,
03:37I'm doing all the driving.
03:39You need to do some as well.
03:40Absolutely right.
03:42I learned.
03:42Well, you're technically in the passenger seat today
03:44in the challenger's chair.
03:46Let's see if you can take over
03:47and get the driving seat off, Annie.
03:49Best of luck to both of you.
03:50APPLAUSE
03:52But remember, it's not the destination,
03:55it's the journey,
03:56and it starts now, Annie.
03:57Hi, Rachel.
03:57Hi, Annie.
03:58Can I have a consonant, please?
03:59You can indeed.
04:00Start today with B.
04:01And another one, please.
04:03G.
04:04And another one.
04:06W.
04:07And a vowel.
04:09A.
04:10And another one.
04:12E.
04:13And another one.
04:14O.
04:16And a consonant.
04:18J.
04:20And another one.
04:21T.
04:23And a vowel, please.
04:25Good old challenge to start.
04:26A final E.
04:28Yes, indeed.
04:28At home on in the studio.
04:29Let's play Countdown.
04:30Good.
04:31Good old challenge.
04:35Good old challenge,
05:00Time is up. Annie?
05:03I think it's a five.
05:05Yeah, and George?
05:07Six.
05:07Six from George? Wow. Annie, what's a five?
05:10Begot.
05:11Begot. OK.
05:13And for yourself, George?
05:15Er, goatee.
05:16Oh, my goodness me, goatee.
05:19Goatee is absolutely brilliant. Well scored.
05:20Well done.
05:23Well started in the first round.
05:25Begot, absolutely fine. Begot, but, yeah, just a five.
05:28Is that it?
05:29Yeah, and we've got another six.
05:30TOWAGE.
05:31TOWAGE.
05:32Active towing a boat, or the charge for towing a boat.
05:35Yeah, the charge for us thinking as well.
05:37There you go. Well done, George, you're picking these letters.
05:39Hello, Rachel.
05:40Hi, George.
05:41Consonant, please.
05:43Thank you, start with R.
05:45And a vowel.
05:47I.
05:48And a consonant.
05:50T.
05:51And a vowel.
05:52E.
05:54Consonant.
05:55L.
05:57Consonant.
05:58M.
05:59M.
06:00Veral.
06:03A.
06:06Consonant.
06:08V.
06:09And a vowel.
06:10And lastly, U.
06:13And 30 seconds.
06:14L.
06:27Why do we trust?
06:28Vita.
06:28A.
06:29V Alien.
06:29Allow.
06:29File.
06:30Forward.
06:30And a vowel.
06:31許.
06:32There's a vowel.
06:33And a vowel.
06:35You're right.
06:35It's a vowel.
06:36innovations in the pub.
06:37So this scenario is not säger.
06:37Well done.
06:38You're right.
06:39So this department is not säger.
06:40Do not judge us.
06:40You're out.
06:41I'm sorry.
06:41I'm sorry.
06:42You're right.
06:42By the way.
06:43THEY CONFER
06:45George?
06:46Erm, seven, I think.
06:48And Annie?
06:49Seven.
06:50What do you think, George?
06:51Maltier.
06:52Yeah, Annie.
06:53Same word.
06:54Yeah.
06:55There you go.
06:57Yep.
06:58Maltier comes up again, so can we add anything else?
07:02Yes, we've got two more good sevens.
07:04Virtual.
07:05Yeah.
07:06And muriate.
07:07And just to tell you about muriate, it's a very old term for chloride.
07:11Good.
07:12Excellent.
07:13Annie's on the board.
07:14George continues to score.
07:15So that's 13-7 as we get to our first numbers.
07:18Annie?
07:19Can I have two large and the rest small, please?
07:22Luke Kennedy.
07:23Thank you, Annie.
07:24Two large, four little.
07:25First numbers of today's contest are 2, 4, 7, 9.
07:31And then the big ones, 150.
07:34And your target, 158.
07:37158.
07:38Numbers up.
07:39It's okay.
07:41It's fine.
07:42There goes, okay, do.
07:44I'll wait to see you in the next video.
07:45I'm gonna find out.
07:46You need to see it on the inside, like, I'm so busy.
07:47You never know that.
07:48Come on.
07:49You're going to need to see it on the inside.
07:50There's a bit of a good bed.
07:51A little bit of a kitchen, too, and you'll want to enjoy it.
07:53It's okay, it's not too, but it's not too late.
07:54That's time.
08:10The target, 1-5-8. Annie?
08:121-5-8.
08:13And what about you, George?
08:14No, 1-5-7.
08:15Missed it.
08:16Listen, you'll be wondering how.
08:18I'll tell you how.
08:19It's your first numbers game on national TV.
08:21It's the worst round for every challenger,
08:23so don't worry about it.
08:24Annie, off you go.
08:25100 out of 50.
08:26150.
08:28And then 2 times 4 for the 8.
08:29And add it on.
08:30Yeah.
08:311-5-8.
08:32Well done.
08:35Don't fret George at all.
08:37I tell you, it gets much easier, the numbers.
08:39Right, let's do it then.
08:40First tea time teaser of this Thursday afternoon
08:42is lied over.
08:43L-I-E-D.
08:45Lied over.
08:45He lied over and over again to cover his wicked deeds.
08:49He lied over and over again to cover his wicked deeds.
08:52Welcome back.
09:08A bit of a sinister tea time teaser.
09:10He lied over and over again to cover his wicked deeds.
09:13An evildoer.
09:14An evildoer.
09:15What a grim word that is.
09:17Right, just four points in it.
09:19Our champion is slightly in the lead.
09:21But George, you're on the letters.
09:24Consonant, please, Rachel.
09:25Thank you, George.
09:26P.
09:27Vowel.
09:28A final I.
09:54Let's go.
10:25That's time.
10:27George?
10:27Seven.
10:28Seven from you.
10:29Annie?
10:29Seven.
10:30Seven as well.
10:31What's the word, George?
10:32Packets.
10:33Packets.
10:34And Annie?
10:34And uptakes.
10:35And uptakes.
10:37Two sevens, but Susie's got a glint in her eye here.
10:41Well, very late, glint, because I thought this would be fine, but uptake is a mass noun.
10:46Slow on the uptake, you can understand that.
10:48I thought maybe you might be able to pluralise it when you're talking about the different taking
10:52up by different people, but not there, I'm afraid.
10:55Wow.
10:55Can we add any other sevens?
10:57Well, to go with the teapot, teacups.
10:58Excellent.
10:59Together.
10:59Perfect.
11:00So, George, I mean, I didn't think you wouldn't get the numbers.
11:03I didn't think Annie was about to lose points in the letters, and the upshot is you're bagging
11:07the lead.
11:07Annie, let's go again.
11:08Can I have a consonant, please?
11:10Thank you, Annie.
11:11N.
11:12And another one, please.
11:14Z.
11:15And another.
11:18G.
11:19And a vowel.
11:21E.
11:22And another.
11:23O.
11:25And another.
11:26E.
11:27And a consonant.
11:30D.
11:32And a consonant.
11:34S.
11:36And a vowel.
11:37And lastly.
11:39O.
11:40Start the clock.
11:41O.
12:07Time's up.
12:12Annie, how many?
12:13Five.
12:14A five from you.
12:15And George?
12:15Seven.
12:16Seven.
12:16The five is?
12:18Nodes.
12:19Nodes.
12:19And George?
12:21Snoozed.
12:21Exactly.
12:22You see, it's a word that George and I are very familiar with in the afternoon, aren't
12:26we?
12:27How do you get on, JB?
12:28I beg to differ.
12:29We had snoozed as well.
12:30Yeah.
12:30It's a lovely word, Susie.
12:32It is gorgeous, isn't it?
12:33Yeah.
12:34Just very languorous and lovely.
12:36Otherwise, we had goose, which is not so nice.
12:38Not so nice.
12:39We'll not be doing that this afternoon.
12:41OK.
12:42Numbers.
12:42Second time today, George McAleer, you're up.
12:45One from the top, please.
12:47And any other five?
12:48Thank you, George.
12:49One large.
12:50Five knots.
12:51And the second number scheme of the day is three, nine, two, four, one, and 50.
13:00And you need to reach the target, 128.
13:03Another little one.
13:03One, two, eight.
13:04Numbers up.
13:05One, two, eight.
13:35Time's up, George.
13:36One, two, eight.
13:37One, two, eight.
13:38And Annie?
13:38One, two, eight.
13:39One, two, eight.
13:39George only thinks, but that's OK, because you're going first, so off you go.
13:43Three times 50.
13:45Three times 50 is 150.
13:48Nine twos is 18.
13:51Yeah.
13:51Plus four is 22.
13:53Take it away from the 150 for one to eight.
13:56Lovely.
13:57Well done.
13:58That's the one several ways to go.
14:00Annie?
14:00I did it differently.
14:02I did 50 times two for 100.
14:05And then nine times three for 27.
14:07Plus the one for 28.
14:09And add a mum.
14:10Another ten points.
14:11Well done.
14:13Well done, both of you.
14:14Just ten points in it.
14:15Really tight game.
14:17As we talked to JB Gill for the last time in your stint in Dictionary Corner.
14:21I mean, we started with JLS because Rachel wouldn't talk to me if I hadn't have.
14:26And we talked a bit about that.
14:28We talked about the farming, which is the bit I wanted to talk about.
14:31How did we not get near songs of praise?
14:34Do you see your family ever with the amount of work that?
14:37Only when you're farming you get to see them.
14:40So just give us a sort of overall picture of sort of also the presenting and stuff.
14:44How do you just keep it all ticking over?
14:46What makes you most passionate?
14:48I mean, I've always been very much a people person.
14:52And so that, I think, is one of the things I love about presenting.
14:55A lot of the shows I'm involved in.
14:57I've got multiple, I suppose, things that I enjoy.
15:01Like songs of praise, for example.
15:02I mean, I've been kayaking down the River Tay.
15:05You know, I've gone to meet lots of different people, as you can imagine, from all sorts of places all over the world.
15:10I've done farm-based things, even for songs of praise.
15:12And, of course, there's a music tie-in.
15:14So, you know, I've always tried to stick to things that I'm passionate about.
15:17You know, I love my family, of course.
15:19I'm very much a family man.
15:20I do a family show, actually, called Cooking with the Gills.
15:24Yeah.
15:24So obviously tying in the food element to that as well.
15:27Do Springtime on the Farm, which I've done now for Seven Series, which has been fantastic.
15:31And, of course, down on the farm for CBeebies.
15:34So, yeah, you know, it's been great.
15:36And I love doing, meeting people and working on television.
15:39So what's next for you, apart from, you know, gracing us with your presence for a week?
15:44Well, I'm working on a new series, as I say, of Springtime on the Farm, which is very exciting.
15:48Of course, the weather's made a turn for the better, which I'm excited about.
15:52So there'll be lots of outdoors working for that.
15:54And also a new series, as I say, of Cooking with the Gills, which is fantastic.
15:58I'm looking forward to that.
15:59And then, of course, out you go, on to a JLS again.
16:02So you're able to change it up, go back on stage and just get a little bit of that proper stardom.
16:07How different is that from the farm to the stage?
16:10Absolutely.
16:10Well, I mean, it might not be too different.
16:12Of course, the summer tours are slightly different to the arena tours.
16:14So we will be outdoors.
16:16And, you know, with the British weather, I'm sure there'll be lots of rain.
16:19But it's all good fun.
16:20Of course, linking up with the boys and their families.
16:23And it's a summer holiday, so my kids will be on the road as well.
16:25Yeah, going through it all together.
16:27Love it.
16:27Thank you very much, mate.
16:31OK, back to the game and back to the letters.
16:34Annie.
16:35Can I have a consonant, please?
16:37Thank you, Annie.
16:38T.
16:39And another one.
16:41P.
16:42And another one.

17:22And a consonant.
17:35That's all the time we have. Annie?
17:38Six. Six from you and George?
17:40Five. The five is?
17:42Potty. Potty. You'll be going potty when you hear this.
17:46Tiptoe. Well spotted. It's a lovely little word as well.
17:49It just does what it says in the tin, doesn't it?
17:52We're tiptoeing through the tulips. Lovely for six.
17:55How do we do, Susie and Jay?
17:56Another six. Petite.
17:58Petite and tiptoe. Feel connected. That's nice.
18:00Yeah. That's very nice.
18:02All right. Four points now, the difference.
18:04Annie catches up and George, you're picking these letters.
18:08Consonant, please. Thank you, George.

19:21I wonder, was the seven she was contemplating the same as the one

24:58Hole in one, mate.
24:58Well done.
24:59Seven points for you.
25:01JB, can we beat that?
25:02Even match it?
25:03We can match it with a seven.
25:04A disco-ed.
25:06A disco-ed?
25:07Yeah.
25:07Kind of like a bit more like in the 70s for partied, really.
25:11We disco-ed together.
25:12Nobody says we disco-ed in the modern age.
25:15Nobody, even my generation, don't say that.
25:18We're going back 70s there, aren't we?
25:19It's always good.
25:20Bring it back.
25:21Right, 18-point lead now with four rounds left.
25:25Still enough time for a champion to pull this one out of the bag.
25:29But George is in good shape at the moment as we get our origins of words.
25:33Susie, what are we talking about?
25:35Well, credit for this subject goes to Leslie Blakesley from Rotherham,
25:40who asks where the phrase teetotal comes from.
25:44Mm-hm.
25:45And you have to go back a fair way.
25:49There are competing theories for this,
25:51but the most specific account of it
25:53is that it was first used by a man called Richard Turner of Preston,
25:58and this is in September 1833.
26:00And he gave a speech in which he promoted total abstinence from any alcohol,
26:06not just the really strong stuff,
26:07which is what most temperance reformers had been advocating.
26:12So some drinks were OK for them, others were not.
26:15But Richard Preston was saying absolutely no alcohol at all.
26:18And amongst the crowd listening to him was someone called Mr.
26:24Joseph Livesey, who went on to form the Total Abstinence Society.
26:29So this is still in the 1830s.
26:32And he founded a magazine for anybody who wanted to abstain from alcohol.
26:37And in one of the issues,
26:38he has a full-page spread of Dickie Turner,
26:41Richard Turner,
26:42who he says is celebrated for the creation of the word teetotal.
26:47And Richard Turner's tombstone, in fact,
26:50also credits him with inventing the word.
26:52So this all feels very definitive.
26:55Literally on his tombstone,
26:56it says created the word teetotal.
26:59But, and there is a but,
27:00there is proof that the adverb teetotally
27:03was already being used in the US
27:06just before the speech, the famous speech, was given.
27:11And it's actually thought to have been prevalent in Ireland
27:14from a much earlier date.
27:17But the teetotal, just to answer the question,
27:19is teetotally.
27:21Wonderful. Thank you.
27:26Four rounds to go.
27:29George, will you be popping open the champagne at the end of this?
27:33You could be a champion. Let's go.
27:34A consonant, please.
