00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34It's another first round in our Champion of Champions match and certainly a big buzz of excitement here in the Countdown Studio.
00:43And talking of buzz, I read recently that archaeologists have found some traces of pottery with beeswax coated to them.
00:53So, suggesting that we've been keeping bees for 9,000 years. Imagine that.
01:00They weren't any fools. 9,000 years ago, people had hives with bees buzzing around. Fantastic.
01:05And honey, of course, is a wonderful sweetener. I'm reading here, it's baking on toast perhaps.
01:10For me, I think honey and brandy or whiskey with a little lemon and a little bit of ice at night.
01:16Don't you think? A little hot toddy?
01:17Oh, yeah. And a bit of ginger as well. I'll shove that in there.
01:21Ginger is marvellous.
01:22Marvellous. Yeah. What's your favourite sort of tonic for getting or staving off a cold?
01:27Do you have anything special?
01:27Oh, yeah. Well, I think it's supposed to be manuka honey. That's supposed to be the good stuff, isn't it?
01:31Isn't it lovely?
01:31The unpasteurised stuff that's still got the antiseptic properties and then the numbers next to it.
01:37And the bigger the number, the more expensive it is. I don't really know what that refers to.
01:41It's expensive. But the manuka honey is actually, I swear by that, I think it's brilliant stuff.
01:47Now, Dylan Taylor. Dylan, welcome back. You were the runner-up back in 2013.
01:53And when you were in that series, I think I'm right in saying, and you'll correct me, I'm sure, if I'm wrong,
01:58that as an octochamp, when you reach the octochamp status, you scored the highest score ever as an octochamp.
02:06That's right.
02:06With 974 points. Is that right?
02:08That is right.
02:09And you were only a little chap then. 17?
02:13Still stands to this present day.
02:15I'm delighted to see you back here in our Champion of Champions series. Well done, Dylan.
02:20And Tracy, you're joined by Tracy Mills. Welcome.
02:24Not far from Stockport, mother of three boys, with your husband of 20 years, Mark.
02:30Yes, that's right, yeah.
02:30And they're all watching, or are they in the audience somewhere?
02:33My husband and son are in the audience at the moment, yes.
02:35You've brought him along?
02:36Yes.
02:36Well done. All right.
02:37Runner-up at the start of 2015 and married 20 years.
02:41Yes, that's right.
02:41Brilliant stuff.
02:42Let's have a big round of applause then for Tracy Mills and Dylan Taylor.
02:49And over in the corner, as ever, Susie and the wonderful TV and radio presenter.
02:56We love her, Gloria Honeyford.
02:58Welcome back.
02:58I'm definitely signing you as my manager, definitely.
03:00The introductions have been fabulous this week.
03:03All right.
03:04Welcome back.
03:04Now then, Dylan, take us away on the letters game.
03:07Thanks, Nick.
03:08Hi, Rachel.
03:09Hi, Dylan.
03:09Can I have a vowel, please?
03:11Start today with O.

03:48Music.
03:49Yes, Dylan?

04:16An eight?
04:17Eight as well.
04:18Mm-hmm.
04:19Dylan?
04:20Ascribed.
04:21Ascribed.
04:21Now then, Tracy?
04:23Idiocraze.
04:24I toss that carefully to Susie.
04:27How are you spelling that one, Tracy?
04:28I-O-D-C-R-A-S-E.
04:32I-O-D-C-R-A-S-E.
04:36It's actually idocraze.
04:38I-O-D-O.
04:39I-O-D-O rather than I-O-D.
04:43I-O-D-O is a mineral.
04:44You'll find it in limestone,
04:45and apparently it's the one stone
04:47that's sometimes mistaken for jade.
04:49By jewellers, even.
04:51So it's a great eight.
04:53Just felt that way, I'm afraid.
04:55All right.
04:56So there we are.
04:57Dylan off to a furiously fast start
04:59with eight points.
05:00And Gloria.
05:01Gloria and Susie?
05:02Yes, well, I would have had the eight points as well
05:03because we had a scribe.
05:05Yeah.
05:05Very good.
05:06Nothing beyond that, really.
05:07No line.
05:08All right.
05:09Now then, Tracy, let's have a letters game from you.

07:37Dylan?
07:37I went nine times the eight.
07:39Nine times eight, 72.
07:41Five over the five is a one.
07:42Yep.
07:43Ten subtracted two ones.
07:45Ten minus that one and the other one for eight.
07:47Times 72.
07:48Perfect.
07:48Five, seven, six.

12:05Parietal.
12:06With an uncertain look.
12:08Yeah, it's brilliant.
12:09It's a term from anatomy and biology relating to the wall of the body or a body cavity.
12:15That's brilliant.
12:18Well done.
12:19Parietal.
12:21Did you know that, Dylan?
12:22Because you gave me a funny look, which said you were taking a risk.
12:26I thought it was in between.
12:28You were there or thereabouts.
12:29Well, well done.
12:30There we go.
12:30Now, what have we got?
12:31Nothing back at that.
12:32As soon as we had to have plaited.
12:34Yeah, plaited.
12:35There's dipteral as well.
12:37Dipteral is another eight.
12:38And that is describing an open space as a double row of columns surrounding it.
12:43The rows of columns are known as peristiles.
12:46Yes.
12:46And if they've got a double row, that means it is dipteral.
12:50Well, I'm done.
12:51All right, very good.
12:5241 plays 25.
12:54And it's Tracy's numbers game now.

14:05Just show Tracy.
14:07Well done.
14:10Well done.
14:11And now we turn to Gloria.
14:13And Gloria, when are you with us last in the studio?
14:16The last of a visit.
14:17You told us the story about your husband trying to buy shoes.
14:20And you saying they looked awful.
14:22At what turned out to be his current pair.
14:25It seems his luck with shopping hasn't improved.
14:28No.
14:28My poor husband comes in for a lot of stick.
14:30And his shopping leaves a lot to be desired.
14:31Funny enough, a couple of weeks ago, he went in Dubai like a shaver.
14:34You know, electric shaver thing.
14:35And he said to the girl, is it portable?
14:39And she went, no, Spain.
14:42He said, no, no, no, no, no.
14:43Is it portable?
14:45She said, no, no.
14:47It's Spanish.
14:49He said, no.
14:50I mean, is it portable?
14:52She went, not Portugal, Spanish.
14:56But Cliff Richard's been a great mate for about 45 years.
15:00And a couple of years back, we were at a mutual friend's house for a bit of a holiday in Dubai.
15:06And, of course, the shopping is fantastic.
15:09Anyway, Cliff was looking for skinny jeans.
15:10I mean, really skinny jeans being very thin anyway.
15:13And so we, when we were shopping, found them and said to him, we find the right shop, you know, for the skinny jeans.
15:19So in he went, perfect.
15:21And my husband happened to say, would you have those my size?
15:24And the guy in all sincerity went, no.
15:26He said, try fat face just across the corridor.
15:31How brilliant.
15:33So his shopping is actually quite entertaining, I have to say.
15:37I went to Dubai once.
15:39I spent my whole time on an industrial estate.
15:41We were filming for The Apprentice in those days.
15:43Yes.
15:43But they have this mall, this shopping mall.
15:46It's the biggest in the world, apparently.
15:47It is.
15:48I mean, it's bliss.
15:49Tell us a little bit about that.
15:50It's extraordinary.
15:51Yeah, it is, actually.
15:52But I do find in Dubai that once you're tired of shopping and eating, and if you don't really like hot, hot, hot weather, not a lot left to do.
15:59That's just a personal opinion.
16:01Yeah.
16:02There we go.
16:03Good.
16:03So he went to fat face, and he was happy ever after.
16:06Oh, he's a happy boy since, yes.
16:08Well done.
16:08All right.
16:10Now then, Dylan on 51, Tracy on 35, and we turn now to Dylan.

24:41distance and distance for me as well there we go just swap notes and over in the corner
25:00we have something different over here land ties right yes lots of architectural terms today uh
25:07land ties a beam or piece of masonry that supports a wall or another structure vertical structure
25:12there you go all right anything else no that was that eight land ties good enough thank you 86 base
25:1956 and we're back with you susie for your wonderful origins of words now then uh well i have to thank
25:26jim sutherland because he's um done a lovely book that he sent me which is called the graphic lexicon
25:31and it's just um some nice drawings uh together with the etymologies of some of the words that fascinate
25:37him and he says at the beginning i'm a designer i'm not an academic but i'm fascinated by etymologies
25:41um and a lot of the words that he includes are words that i love because they carry their history
25:47quite openly and yet we overlook them because we don't really probe the meaning of them secretaries
25:52being something that i've mentioned before the secretary being somebody who was entrusted with
25:56the secrets of their master if we called them secretaries it would be a little bit more obvious
26:02a freelancer is another one a freelancer was a knight who wasn't tied to anybody uh no nobleman or royal
26:10king or queen instead he was free to use his lance uh to basically whoever paid him so he was a bit
26:17like a mercenary a freelancer uh most freelancers today of course are not mercenaries and sometimes
26:23they're not paid particularly well but that was their origin they have knightly origins
26:26um and jim also mentions disease if you break up disease it means that you are not at ease you are
26:34in some discomfort but again it's not something that you would necessarily think about an arrival
26:38shares a route with river uh because originally your rival was the uh the enemy who said shared the same
26:44stretch of water as you the same stretch of river and of course water being incredibly valuable to
26:49all human life they were if you like looking to share the same supplies as you and possibly to steal
26:55more uh from you than you would like uh so thank you to jim sutherland because it's just reminded me
27:00of all those words that carry their history right on their sleeve but we often overlook them
27:05all right 86 to 56 dylan in charge as we move to tracy and the penultimate letters again tracy

30:05as well two spaniels two little cocker spaniels over here what have you got a few wallies here
30:11beg your pardon a few wallies I don't believe that a wally you allowed to have a wally you
30:16could don't have well yes I've been in the dictionary for ages no it probably does come
30:22from the name Walter there's a lovely story attached to it that somebody who went to a pop concert in
30:27the 60s was separated from his companions and it was announced over the tannoy and the crowd started
30:33chanting Wally Wally Wally that's one of the theories as to why it became popularized but yeah
30:38then it became where's Wally and then where's Wally that's they should have shouted in the first place
30:43all right a hundred Dylan look at this to Tracy's 63 and Tracy final test to you it's a numbers game
30:57as it's my last time could I have one from the top and any of the five of your choice please thank you
31:03why great addition thank you Tracy one large five little and for this round your five little ones
31:07are five another five nine eight and six and the big one 75 and this target 923 nine two three
31:37well Tracy nine two three and Dylan I think I've got 93 but it's not written down well take us as far
31:57as you can Dylan okay so let's go for the nine minus the five should give you a four yeah subtract that from
32:06the 75 71 and then eight at the other five yep product of two primes and 1371 well done well
32:13done indeed and Tracy done exactly the same way well done 110 therefore to Tracy's 73 to two good scores
32:27as we go into our final round which is our conundrum round Dylan Tracy fingers on buzzers let's reveal
32:35today's countdown conundrum

33:17And you.
33:18All right.
33:19Gloria, I'll see you tomorrow.
33:20Oh, yes, I'm going home to swat up on all those words that Dylan does,
33:24the way he just learns those every night.
33:26It's amazing.
33:26Fantastic.
33:27Amazing.
33:28I might be better tomorrow.
33:29Amazing.
33:29But the truth is, on the maths and things, you can't learn that.
33:33That's true.
33:33And the speed of that conundrum is extraordinary.
33:35That's very true.
33:36I'm glad you pointed that out to me.
33:38See you tomorrow, Susie.
33:40See you tomorrow, Nick.
33:41And Rachel, too.
33:42Well, it shows the standard that Dylan's disappointed with that performance
33:45just because the clock's lit up at the end there.
33:48Very disappointing, yeah.
