Celtics rout Bulls- enter All-Star Break, 2nd in the East. With a JT return seemingly more, and more likely, Scheim poses this question... Which would be more shocking- That Patriots team that just went to the SB, or the Celts potentially making the finals?
Transcript
00:00So what we witnessed with the New England Patriots was a bit of a shock for all of us.
00:04Nobody really projected them to make it to the Super Bowl before the season started.
00:09And something similar is happening right now with the Boston Celtics.
00:13They got the win last night.
00:14They hit into the All-Star break now 35-19, second in the East, five and a half games
00:21behind the Detroit Pistons.
00:23Oh, and by the way, they don't have Jason Tatum.
00:25So I propose the question to you, what will be more shocking when the New England, having
00:32New England, the New England Patriots make the Super Bowl or if and when the Celtics make
00:38the NBA finals in a season Jason Tatum wasn't even supposed to play in, which will be more
00:43shocking?
00:44I would say the Patriots making the Super Bowl because you still had Jalen Brown, right?
00:51And these things, yeah, but well, and you only won four games last year, really just
00:57three games.
00:57So my thought though is, is like before the season started with Jalen Brown, there was discussion
01:02if they were going to be a play-in team, whereas with the Patriots, yeah, or even tank, right?
01:08And so, but with the Patriots, a lot of people thought they would be a borderline playoff team
01:12writer on that edge.
01:13Some believed they would be a playoff team.
01:15A lot of people had them as a wildcard team.
01:17They were clearly better than that, but like my thought was, I think we were lower on the
01:22Celtics to start the season.
01:23Well, I had them top three.
01:26Maybe not you, Corey.
01:27Yeah, you were right, my man.
01:28You were right about that.
01:28You had the Patriots winning six games this year and they made it to the Super Bowl.
01:32I think it's recency bias.
01:34You're thinking about it now.
01:35If you go back to the beginning of the season, if we ask the same question, who's more likely
01:40make the Super Bowl or the NBA championship without Jason Tatum, everybody would have picked
01:43Celtics.
01:45I don't know.
01:45There were a lot of people talking about before the Celtics season started that there's a chance
01:49they tank.
01:50Yeah.
01:50Well, I think that was just because people were like, oh, without Tatum, they should tank
01:54to get the number one overall pick.
01:55I don't think.
01:56But like, that's the point, right?
01:57Everybody thought they'd suck without Tatum.
01:59They have not at all.
02:00I think everybody was like, why be a fifth or sixth seed, a playoff team when you're not
02:05going to like your, like in the NBA being like a fifth or sixth seed, that's not really
02:09great.
02:10Because the other thing you have to look at with the Patriots, we all, I mean, I thought
02:14they'd win nine games and maybe have a chance to sneak into the playoffs, but you still had
02:18a deal with Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow.
02:22In the NBA, it was really the Knicks.
02:26Yeah.
02:26I mean, and people like Detroit was a good team, but it was really like, all right, the
02:30Knicks and Giannis wants out.
02:32No, I think it's the Patriots from my perspective, but it's a great question, Sean.
02:36Excellent question.
02:37Yes.
02:37It was so shocking to be back there after what we went through last year as a fan base.
02:46And then to be back there and people are like, my God, the Patriots are back in it and you're
02:51there and you're like, I'm like, this was such a shocking thing for me.
02:56But I don't think a lot of people had a Celtics team playing without Jason Tatum.
03:02That was going to do as well as they know.
03:05And that's kind of my whole thing is outside of Wiggy saying they're a top three team in
03:10the NBA, like nobody expected them at the all-star break to be the second best.
03:16No, no, but they did expect them to be like a fifth, sixth seed.
03:20Nobody, people were like, oh, they should tank because of this reason.
03:25But when you ask people, where do you think the Celtics will land?
03:28And they were like, ah, they might be a fifth seed, a sixth seed, even a playing team.
03:33Like they had them in the playoffs.
03:36I think at the beginning of this year, people were just, when they were like, oh, the Patriots
03:44will be a playoff team.
03:45I think that was them just, you know, wishing upon a stop.
03:49Do you think the better comparison than Wiggy would be like the Patriots?
03:52And if the Bruins made a cup run, like if the Bruins were in the Stanley Cup final, all
03:56of a sudden, would that be a closer comparison to the Patriots?
03:59Yes.
04:00Yes.
04:00Because they were, I mean, Jones and Keefer literally saying gag for Gavin in the first
04:05overall pick in the NHL draft.
04:07Yeah.
04:07Because I think there were a lot of people who thought the Bruins wouldn't even make the
04:12postseason this year at the beginning of the year.
04:14They were plus 400 to make the playoffs.
04:16Well, you still had Jalen Brown and you were like Pete Pritch, Derek White, and you looked
04:21at the Eastern Conference and the NBA.
04:23You're like, all right, they'll be a playoff team, but how far will they go?
04:26Where, yeah, I would say with the Bruins, you'd be like, oh my God, if they made it to
04:29the Stanley Cup finals, that's a shock.
04:31So the Celtics preseason over under for win total was 41 and a half.
04:36The Patriots preseason win total was nine.
04:39Eight and a half.
04:39Eight and a half.
04:40Eight and a half.
04:40So it's pretty close to the same.
04:42I mean, you're 500 of both.
04:44So to say it's this huge chasm, I don't think that that's...
04:46Wait, the Celtics were only 41 and a half?
04:48This is what...
04:49BetMGM right here, win totals, Eric Shun, 41 and a half was the win total.
04:56So they're only seven wins away already at the All-Star break from exceeding that number.
