00:00This week, I have an SUV I have really enjoyed. It's the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580,
00:14the flagship SUV in the Mercedes lineup, and the most powerful of the GLS models.
00:24I was pretty familiar with many of the features. You see, I have this SUV in my garage, except
00:31it's a 2022 GLS 450, the six-zoned version. This is a sharp-looking SUV with a sculpted
00:39hood, distinct lines running throughout the body, beautiful 21-inch wheels, chrome dual
00:45exhaust tips built into the rear bumper, and a nice spoiler. The emerald green metallic
00:51paint is simply stunning. Under the hood, there's a 4-liter twin-turbo
00:56V8 engine with a mild hybrid assist that is mated to a 9-speed shiftable automatic transmission.
01:03Together they produce a heart-pounding 483 horses and a strong 516 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration
01:12is not an issue with this SUV, and it sounds great. This is the 4-Matic, which signifies
01:20it's all-wheel drive. As you enter the luxurious cabin, it is all Mercedes. The GLS has one of
01:27the most spacious and comfortable cabins I've tested since I had its little sister, the GLE
01:33model. Leather seats are inviting and slightly bolstered, and they're firm, but not too firm.
01:38These power-adjusting, massaging seats are also heated and cooled. It was nice to see a light-colored
01:45interior, you get mostly black these days. There's a 12.3-inch gauge cluster that is one of the
01:52most configurable I've ever seen, and it connects to another 12.3-inch digital dash.
01:59Mercedes has their MBUX infotainment system, which still utilizes a console touchpad when
02:06navigating the system, but the touchscreen for me was easier to use, although I hate the
02:12fingerprints on it, but it's unavoidable. The learning curve was not bad, and the screen
02:18is colorful and vibrant. The infotainment system is where you operate the navigation system,
02:23Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, the amazing Burmeister sound system, voice activation, ambient lighting,
02:31Bluetooth, and it houses a terrific rear-view camera. Beautiful dark wood runs throughout
02:37the cabin from the door panels, and it continues across the dash. The center console houses the
02:42drive modes, shortcuts to the infotainment screen, and the trackpad if you prefer. You
02:49can choose from individual, sport, comfort, or eco. There are USB-C ports, a couple of big
02:56cup holders that are heated and cooled, and there are very comfortable grab handles for both front
03:01seat passengers. There's also a cell phone charger. Moving to the back seat, it's very
03:07roomy with two heated captain's chairs, and those occupants get their own air conditioning
03:12vents and controls, and more USB-C charging ports. The third row seat will hold two adults
03:19very comfortably with good leg and headroom, and you can fold it down quickly with the push
03:24of a button. The tailgate is power operated from the key fob or from a pull switch on the
03:30driver's door. Cargo area is spacious, with up to 84 cubic feet behind the front seats.
03:38Also from the rear, you can lower the GLS for easier loading of cargo. Under the floor is
03:44the full-size spare and a small amount of storage. This is a bend, so it comes extremely well equipped
03:50with a start-stop-disable button, brake holds, ambient lighting, the Burmeister sound system,
03:56a massive panoramic power sunroof, power tilt wheel, soft closing doors, side steps, all power
04:04assist, and a lot more. On the safety side, you get active steering assist, active lane change
04:11assist, emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control
04:18with stop-and-go and traffic sign recognition. Fuel economy is okay given the size of this
04:24SUV. It's rated at 16 in town and 21 on the highway. The GLS 580 came out late due to the
04:33chip shortage, so I've not gotten a window sticker yet, but duplicating it online, the MSRP is
04:39about $120,000, which is well in line with other large luxury SUVs. I don't find the price out of
04:48line at all looking at the competition. This SUV is truly a joy to drive, handling is amazing,
04:55and it just feels heavy and substantial. If you need to tow something, it can handle up to 7,700 pounds.
05:02It is incredibly quiet inside, and acceleration is fantastic. It's a wonderful, roomy, daily driver.
