00:00Hello there, welcome to your Tuesday evening weather update from the Met Office.
00:04First of all, let me take you through the rain warnings for the next 24 hours and beyond.
00:10It's Scotland seeing the worst of this wet weather which has been relentless through the last five or six weeks.
00:16You can see where our warning zones are, covering Grampians, Aberdeenshire, down towards Fife.
00:22And then also for the southwest of Scotland, so that's just north and west of Glasgow, extending southwards as well.
00:30So we could see here 30 to 40 millimetres of rain, surface water issues wherever you are, the land is that saturated.
00:38As we head through Wednesday evening and overnight, the snow line will fall.
00:41So increasingly this rain here will fall as snow above around 200 to 400 metres, locking in some of that wet weather.
00:50Now this is the pattern it has been so for so long now.
00:55Low pressure towards the west, slow moving weather fronts which stall across more northern areas with that easterly wind
01:02and further weather fronts just scraping the south coast as we head through Wednesday and into Thursday.
01:08But notice the air is turning colder from the north.
01:11Now this will herald a slight change in the weather pattern as we head through Thursday, Friday and into Saturday.
01:18Certainly you're going to feel, well it's going to feel a lot colder in the north with somewhat wintry showers
01:22and the risk of hill and mountain snow.
01:26And by the south we still hang on to slightly milder conditions with low pressure in charge.
01:31But more about the outlook into the weekend in a moment.
01:35For the time being it's a messy picture outside.
01:38We have a lot of cloud, low cloud at that.
01:40If you're travelling you may run into some bursts of rain and also that low cloud causing poor visibility.
01:46Not only at the higher routes into the early hours of the morning we could see some patchy fog as well.
01:51This rain band here continues.
01:53It's persistent particularly across Scotland with some mountain snow.
01:57Outbreaks of rain extending from Liverpool Bay, Midlands, Wales.
02:00Showery bursts towards the south with a brisk breeze and further bouts of rain just coming in across Northern Ireland.
02:06Mild in the south, cold in the north, clearer skies across Shetland where you'll see that wind change as we head through Wednesday.
02:13And into Thursday the air turns colder here.
02:16So through Wednesday morning you will wake up to a lot of cloud and also some outbreaks of rain
02:21which will be showery across more southern and western areas with that fresh wind coming in from the south.
02:27This rain will be persistent across the north there with that mountain snow.
02:31So clearer conditions across the far north of Scotland and we could see some brighter breaks emerging just for a time
02:37across east Wales down towards central southern England where temperatures will reach 11-12 degrees Celsius.
02:42Five though across eastern Scotland.
02:45Through Wednesday evening and overnight this is the rain.
02:47It's edging north with some clearer skies as another batch of rain just clips the south coast
02:53and showers continue across more western and south-western areas.
02:57Into the early hours of Thursday morning a clearance coming in across Aberdeenshire in terms of the rain where it's been so wet for so long.
03:05And notice the wind change here coming in from the north-west across the northern isles with some wintry showers.
03:11Through Thursday afternoon rain continues across northern Ireland and western Scotland.
03:16It will extend down the spine of the country towards Wales, central southern England with further blustery showers towards the south-west
03:21and maybe some clearance coming in along this eastern strip of England as well.
03:27Temperatures then still 10-11 in the south but only four in the north, three across the far north
03:32and that cold air digs further south as we head through Thursday into Friday
03:36with a jet stream covering most of Iberia where the weather remains very lively indeed.
03:41The air becomes even colder through Saturday.
03:44A slight ridge of high pressure through Saturday so it could be a frosty start.
03:48You may catch some sunshine still windy though across this eastern strip of England
03:52and then we wait and watch as this area of cloud and rain moves in preceded by possibly some snow
03:58through Saturday night and into Sunday with further rain coming in across northern Ireland later in the weekend.
04:05Wherever you are, take care.
04:06Remember this week on Tuesdays it's the Deep Dive and this week it's with Ada McGiven.
04:11Check out that and I'll see you again soon.
