00:06ago, a tale about a great kingdom, a new king, and a big, big decision that changed everything.
00:13Imagine a huge, united kingdom, like one giant, happy family. This was the kingdom of Israel,
00:20ruled by the wise king Solomon. But after Solomon's time, his son, Rehoboam, was next in line to be
00:27king. The people of Israel came to Rehoboam with a simple request. They said, your father, Solomon,
00:33gave us a lot of work to do. Could you please make things a little easier for us? If you do,
00:39we will happily serve you. It sounded like a fair deal, right? So, what did Rehoboam do? Well,
00:47he decided to ask for advice, which is a really smart thing to do. First, he went to the elders,
00:52the wise old men who had advised his father, Solomon. They had seen many things and had years
00:59of experience. They told Rehoboam, if you are kind to the people and serve them, they will serve you
01:05forever. Basically, they said, be nice, lighten their load, and they'll be your most loyal friends.
01:11That sounds like great advice, doesn't it? But Rehoboam wasn't so sure. He wanted a second opinion.
01:18So, he went to his friends, the young men he had grown up with. These guys were his age,
01:24and they saw things very differently. They told him, you should show them who's boss.
01:29Tell the people, my little finger is thicker than my father's waist. My father gave you heavy work,
01:36but I will make it even heavier. He used whips, but I will use scorpions. Whoa, that's the total
01:42opposite of what the wise elders said. Their advice was all about being tough and showing power,
01:49not about being kind and understanding. Rehoboam had a choice to make. Would he listen to the wise,
01:55experienced elders, or would he listen to his young, tough-talking friends? This was a huge moment,
02:02a turning point for the entire kingdom. After three days, the people came back to hear his answer.
02:07Rehoboam stood before them and, sadly, he chose to follow the advice of his friends.
02:13He repeated their harsh words, promising to make life even harder for the people.
02:18He chose power over compassion and force over friendship. You can probably guess what happened
02:24next. The people were shocked and hurt. They had come hoping for a kind king, but instead,
02:30they got threats. Ten of the twelve tribes of Israel said,
02:34We've had enough. We have no part in this king. Let's go home. And just like that, the kingdom
02:40split in two. It was like a giant pizza being sliced right down the middle. The ten tribes in
02:46the north broke away and decided to form their own kingdom. They chose a man named Jeroboam to be
02:52their new king. This new northern kingdom was called Israel. Meanwhile, Rehoboam was left with just two
02:59tribes in the south, Judah and Benjamin. This southern kingdom was called Judah. So now, instead of
03:05one big, strong kingdom, there were two smaller, separate ones. This division made both kingdoms
03:11weaker and more vulnerable. They weren't a united family anymore. They were neighbors who didn't
03:17always get along. Let's talk about Jeroboam, the new king of the north. He had an interesting
03:23backstory. A prophet named Ahijah had once told him that God would give him ten tribes to rule
03:29because of Solomon's mistakes. But Solomon didn't like that and tried to get rid of Jeroboam,
03:35so he had to run away to Egypt to stay safe. After Solomon passed away and Rehoboam made his terrible
03:41decision, the people called Jeroboam back to be their king. But Jeroboam was worried. He thought,
03:48If my people keep going down to the temple in Jerusalem to worship, their hearts might turn
03:53back to King Rehoboam. Jerusalem was in the southern kingdom of Judah, so he was afraid of
03:58losing his people. So, he came up with a plan, but it wasn't a good one. He decided to build two new
04:05places of worship in his own kingdom. And in these places, he put up two golden calves for the people
04:11to worship. He told them, It's too much trouble to go to Jerusalem. Here are your gods who brought
04:18you out of Egypt. This was a huge mistake. The people were supposed to worship only the one true
04:24God, but Jeroboam led them down a path of idolatry, which means worshipping false gods. He even set up
04:31his own festivals and his own priests. This decision set a bad example for all the future kings of the
04:37northern kingdom of Israel. It was the beginning of a long story of disobedience and turning away
04:43from God's commandments. Back in the southern kingdom of Judah, things weren't perfect either.
04:49Rehoboam's prideful leadership had already cost him most of his kingdom. The split created all sorts
04:55of problems. The two kingdoms were often in conflict, and they were more easily attacked by other nations.
05:01The unity that had made them so strong under King David and King Solomon was gone.
05:07Both kingdoms had good times and bad times, with some kings trying to do what was right and others
05:13leading the people further away from God. Prophets were sent time and time again to warn them to turn
05:19back, but often, the people and their leaders wouldn't listen. The consequences of this single
05:24decision were massive. It shaped the rest of Israel's history. The political division led to spiritual
05:30division. The story of Rehoboam teaches us such an important lesson about leadership.
05:35A good leader listens. A good leader is humble and compassionate. They care about the well-being
05:42of their people, not just about their own power. Rehoboam had the chance to be a servant leader,
05:48as the elders advised, but he chose to be a harsh ruler instead, and he lost almost everything.
05:55And Jeroboam's story is a powerful warning too. He was given a great opportunity to lead,
06:00but fear and a lack of trust caused him to make a terrible compromise. He tried to control his
06:06people by creating an easier, but wrong, way to worship. This shows us how important it is to
06:12trust in the right way, even when it seems hard, and to never replace the real thing with a cheap
06:18imitation. So, what can we learn from this big, dramatic story of a kingdom divided?
06:24First, wisdom is so valuable. It's often found with those who have more experience,
06:30so it's always a good idea to listen to the advice of parents, teachers, and wise mentors.
06:36Second, kindness and compassion are strengths, not weaknesses. Treating others with respect
06:41builds bridges, while pride and harshness burn them down. And finally, staying true to what is right
06:48is always the best path, even when we're scared or worried. The choices we make, big or small,
06:55can have huge effects, not just on ourselves, but on everyone around us. The split of the kingdom is
07:01a sad story, but it's filled with lessons about leadership, wisdom, and faith that are still super
