00:00Hello and welcome. Today we're diving into one of the most powerful stories of provision in the entire Bible.
00:07It's a story about a desperate mother, a crushing debt, and a miracle that flowed from a single jar of
00:13oil.
00:13This is the story of the widow and the prophet Elisha from 2 Kings chapter 4.
00:18And trust me, what we uncover here has the power to change how you see your own impossible situations.
00:23So, let's set the scene.
00:25We meet a woman who is in the deepest kind of trouble.
00:28Her husband, who was part of the company of prophets, has died.
00:31And he didn't just leave her a widow.
00:33He left her with a massive, unpayable debt.
00:36In ancient Israel, this wasn't just a financial problem.
00:39The law at the time, while designed to protect people, could be harsh.
00:43If you couldn't pay your debts, your children could be taken by the creditor and forced into servitude to work
00:49it off.
00:49Imagine the terror.
00:51This woman had already lost her husband.
00:53And now she was facing the horror of losing her to sons to slavery.
00:57It was a situation with no apparent way out.
01:00She was facing a complete and utter nightmare.
01:02In her desperation, she does the only thing she can think of.
01:06She cries out to the man of God, Elisha.
01:09She explains her predicament.
01:11Your servant, my husband, is dead.
01:13And you know that he feared the Lord.
01:15But now, a creditor has come to take mighty boys as his slaves.
01:19Her appeal is wrong.
01:20It's honest.
01:21And it's filled with anguish.
01:22She isn't just asking for help.
01:24She's reminding Elisha of her husband's faithfulness.
01:27It's a cry that says, we followed God.
01:30We did what was right.
01:32How can this be happening to us?
01:34How many of us have felt that way?
01:36We try to live right, to honor God.
01:38And yet disaster strikes.
01:40It's a very real, very human moment.
01:42Now, Elisha's response is fascinating.
01:45He doesn't immediately say, don't worry, God will provide.
01:49He doesn't offer a simple prayer and send her on her way.
01:52Instead, he asks a very practical, very personal question.
01:56He says, how can I help you?
01:59Tell me, what do you have in your house?
02:01Think about that.
02:02He's shifting her focus from what she's about to lose her sons to what she already possesses.
02:07From the overwhelming knack to the small seed of a solution.
02:10This is such a crucial principle.
02:12Often, when we're in a crisis, all we can see is the giant problem in front of us.
02:17Our vision is consumed by the debt, the diagnosis, the broken relationship.
02:22But God, through Elisha, invites us to look again.
02:25To look inside our own house, our own lives, and find what we do have.
02:30No matter how small it seems, the widow's reply is almost heartbreaking.
02:34She says, your servant has nothing there at all, except a small jar of olive oil.
02:39She practically dismisses it.
02:41Nothing, except this, to her, it's insignificant.
02:45A little bit of oil for cooking, maybe for a lamb.
02:47It's next to nothing when compared to the mountain of debt she's facing.
02:51But for God, that, except is everything.
02:54That small, seemingly insignificant thing is the very seed he is going to use for her miracle.
02:59He doesn't need us to have it all together.
03:02He just needs our, except.
03:03He needs our five loaves and to fish.
03:06He needs our single jar of oil.
03:07He is the master of taking our little and making it more than enough.
03:11So, with this tiny bit of information, Elisha gives her a very strange set of instructions.
03:17He tells her, go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars.
03:21Don't ask for just a few.
03:23This was a step of faith.
03:25Can you imagine her going door to door?
03:27Hi.
03:27Can I borrow your empty pots?
03:29All of them.
03:30No.
03:31I don't have anything to put in them.
03:33I'm just collecting them.
03:34It must have felt foolish.
03:36It required humility and it required her to act on a promise she hadn't seen yet.
03:41But faith isn't about feeling comfortable.
03:43It's about obedience.
03:44Even when the instruction seems illogical.
03:47She had to act like the provision was already there before she saw a single drop of new oil.
03:52And then comes the next part of the instruction, which is just as important.
03:56Elisha says, then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons.
04:00Pour oil from your jar into all the other jars and as each is filled, put it to one side.
04:06Why shut the door?
04:07This wasn't for a magic show.
04:09The miracle was to be a private, intimate affair between this family and God.
04:13Shutting the door was an act of separating themselves from the world's doubt and scrutiny.
04:18It was about creating a sacred space where their faith could operate without distraction or disbelief.
04:23Sometimes the most profound work God has in our lives happens behind closed doors, away from the public eye.
04:29It's in the quiet place where we shut out the noise and focus only on him and the instruction he's
04:35given us.
04:35Now, picture the scene.
04:37The widow and her two boys are in their small home, surrounded by a mountain of empty jars.
04:42She takes her one small pot of oil, the one she said was all she had, and she begins to
04:47pour.
04:48And as she pours into the first empty jar, the oil doesn't run out.
04:52It keeps flowing.
04:53She fills the first jar to the brim.
04:55Her sons hand her another.
04:57She fills that one too.
04:58And another, and another.
05:00The oil from her tiny pot just keeps coming.
05:02This isn't just a multiplication.
05:05It's a creative miracle.
05:06Oil is appearing from a source that should have been empty long ago.
05:09It's flowing supernaturally, defying or logic.
05:12The text says she kept pouring as her sons brought the jars to her.
05:16This was a team effort.
05:17The boys, who were the very ones in danger, became active participants in their own rescue.
05:23Their hands were a part of the miracle.
05:25They were witnessing firsthand that God was their true provider, not some creditor.
05:29And the oil keeps flowing until a critical moment.
05:32The widow says, bring me another one.
05:35But one of her sons replies, there isn't a jar left.
05:38And the Bible says, then the oil stopped flowing.
05:41This is probably the most profound lesson in the entire story.
05:44The miracle didn't stop because God ran out of oil.
05:47God has an infinite supply.
05:49The miracle stopped when the widow ran out of empty vessels.
05:52The provision was limited only by her capacity to receive it.
05:56The number of jars she collected, the amount of faith she exercised by going to her neighbors,
06:02determined the scale of her blessing.
06:04It makes you wonder, doesn't it?
06:06What if she had collected more jars?
06:08What if she had gone to the next village?
06:10God's ability to provide for us is limitless.
06:12But often, our readiness to receive it is not.
06:15How much space are we creating for God to work?
06:18How many empty jars are we bringing to him in faith, expecting him to fill them?
06:23So, with a house full of valuable olive oil, the widow goes back to Elisha.
06:28She doesn't just assume what to do next.
06:30She seeks wisdom.
06:31And Elisha gives her the final piece of the puzzle.
06:34Go, sell the oil and pay your debts.
06:36You and your sons can live on the rest.
06:39Notice the order.
06:40First, pay the debt.
06:41God's provision wasn't just to make her rich.
06:43It was to bring her freedom and restore her integrity.
06:47He is a God of order.
06:48He dealt with the immediate crisis first.
06:51But look at the sheer abundance of his provision.
06:53It wasn't just enough to pay the debt.
06:55It was more than enough.
06:56There was a surplus for her and her sons to live on.
06:59This is the nature of our God.
07:01He doesn't just meet our needs.
07:03He provides abundantly.
07:04Above and beyond all we can ask or imagine.
07:07This story is so much more than a historical account.
07:10It's a living blueprint for faith.
07:12It teaches us that when we face impossible situations, we should first cry out to God.
07:17Then, we need to look at what we already have, no matter how small.
07:21Our nothing except is God's starting point.
07:24We must then take steps of obedient faith, even if they feel foolish.
07:28By collecting empty jars, we need to shut the door on doubt and create a space for God to work
07:34privately and powerfully in our lives.
07:36And finally, we must realize that the size of our miracle is often determined by the capacity of our faith.
07:42So, what's your nothing except what's the little jar of all in your life that you've been dismissing?
07:48Maybe it's a talent, a small amount of money, a relationship, an idea.
07:53Today, I want to encourage you to see it differently.
07:56See it as the seed for your miracle.
07:58Bring your empty jars to God, your needs, your worries, your hopes, and expectantly watch what he will do.
08:04He is the God who fills empty vessels, pays of every debt, and provides more than enough for the journey
08:10ahead.
