00:00This is Police Interceptors, and you're riding with the pride of
00:10Northamptonshire, Ace Pursuit drivers, with air support, and a crack dog
00:23unit, they bring down the bad guys, keep the streets safe, and battle 24-7, in the war on crime.
00:44A dangerous driver and his wanted passenger, go for a spin, a shocker in Northampton,
01:10and a donut at the Holiday Inn, gets his just desserts.
01:21There he is, 6-1, contact, contact.
01:40A shadow's approaching the sunny town centre.
01:45One of West Mid's most wanted has been spied on North Hans Patch.
01:53Wanted for suspected kidnap, stalking, and assault, he's believed to be in a silver A-Class Merc.
01:59An unmarked armed response unit is tracking the Merc.
02:17And it's eyes down for a full house, because the driver teams up for a game of chase.
02:30And the Merc's two-up, with the suspect believed to be the passenger.
02:42It looks like this driver wants to join him on the wanted list.
02:51Another unit joins the pursuit.
03:01And a growing convoy hurtles towards the M1.
03:04Cops need to stop him reaching the motorway, and they're booked in at the traffic.
03:23Lady Luck saves something for the bad guys.
03:28But they'll need more than luck to lose the four cops on their tail.
03:32Especially elite driver Paul Bertie Bertram in a Beamer M340i.
03:38The plan is to perform a box as Bertie takes the lead.
03:42He's on the Merc's bumper, and just needs to get past.
03:55Bertie's a wizard at the wheel.
03:57A T-pack trained advanced driver with over 20 years worth of tricks up his sleeve.
04:01Including misdirection.
04:03He sells a dummy, then unleashes the 368 of the Beamer's horses.
04:16The Merc is now the filling between an Interceptor sandwich.
04:20But this driver seems a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
04:30As he makes contact with the two-tonne ARV.
04:35And nearly loses it into the central reservation.
04:41The pursuit is now only a few miles away from reaching the M1.
04:45But will the Interceptors be able to stop him before there's mayhem on the motorway?
04:50The Interceptors are after a runaway Mercedes in Northampton.
05:06The Interceptors are after a runaway Mercedes in Northampton.
05:11Off road, briefly, medium rate.
05:14The passenger is wanted for suspected kidnap, stalking and assault.
05:23Bertie's pulled ahead of the Merc, which is caught between two cop cars.
05:27They need to stop it...
05:29...before it hits the M1.
05:31But with no way past Bertie's smart car at the front, they plan to turn the screw from behind.
05:42Then slow the whole thing down.
05:45The runaway's not shy of a game of bumper cars.
05:48But he's playing with the wrong drivers.
05:52As Bertie continues to block, the ARV goes for the bash.
06:02The armed response coppers on scene have come prepared.
06:16The passenger and driver feel the full force of the law.
06:34Yeah, offender's here. Just lock him up, kidnap.
06:38The passenger is confirmed as their suspect, and both blokes are going in bracelets.
06:43Calm, calm, calm, calm. I've got a man fast.
06:45Right, you're under arrest. First to start dangerous drive.
06:47First to say anything, man. In fact, we're going to make sure there's a question.
06:49First to make sure there's a question.
06:50Let's call it.
06:51First to say anything, give it an evidence.
06:56With the Merc driver willing to smash into the cop cars.
07:02The only way to bring this pursuit to an end was to slow him down with the block.
07:08And finish with a perfectly executed tactical contact.
07:14What's your name?
07:16Sorry?
07:17Right, you'll come to no harm if you're compliant.
07:19You understand me?
07:20OK, OK, OK.
07:22Just behave yourself from now.
07:26Despite risking their own lives, the lives of the interceptors and innocent members of the public,
07:31the driver thinks it's all a big joke.
07:34Bear in mind what you've just done. Do not laugh.
07:38It's to kill people, you know that.
07:41But the repercussions of his actions aren't so funny.
07:44You'll go to prison for that?
07:47The driver pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without a license or insurance.
07:55He received a 15-month suspended sentence, a 24-month driving ban and had to pay over a thousand pounds in costs.
08:01No action was taken against the passenger for the alleged kidnapping.
08:06However, for stalking and assault, he received a 12-week suspended sentence and a five-year restraining order.
08:14Give us two seconds.
08:15It's been a good result for the interceptors, but they're not only highly skilled in stopping cars.
08:24It's OK here then.
08:25Just wait there for a second.
08:26OK.
08:27They're also pretty handy at getting them moving again.
08:29You sponge up a little bit.
08:32You come forward.
08:33Then you.
08:34Two minutes.
08:44Take a step back.
08:45The interceptors pride themselves on their negotiation skills.
08:48You can go onto the other side of the road.
08:50I just want you to stay away from me.
08:52But there are some confrontations that can't be resolved with talk alone.
08:56Taser!
08:57Taser!
09:01And there's nothing like a carefully aimed red dot.
09:04Don't move.
09:05Stay there.
09:06Stay there.
09:07To end the conversation.
09:15The benefit of having taser rather than spray or a baton is if you've got someone waving a knife or a sword around,
09:20you don't want to be that close because, in the nicest sense there, it's going to be bigger than yours.
09:25With taser, you've got the distance, so should you need to deal with someone who's uncompliant,
09:30is likely to cause harm or injury to someone, you've got a good 25 feet to deal with them.
09:39You haven't got to put yourself in danger, basically, whereas the other bits of kit, you're more likely to get injured.
09:43Early doors on Thursday morning.
09:50Also be advised yesterday, the caller reports that he tried to attack the staff with a pair of scissors.
10:01Multiple cars are responding to an assault in a supported housing unit.
10:06Remy of Papa One One dropped me on that as well.
10:08And Chris Guttridge isn't far behind.
10:14Staff at the unit are worried about the safety of the other residents.
10:19Making threats, I believe, to somebody and trying to break into a room and causing a bit of damage.
10:25So Chris floors his beamer and zeroes in on the address.
10:28Offices already on scene report the suspect has locked himself in his room and may be armed.
10:42Has he got scissors? Do you say he got scissors?
10:44No, he said he got scissors.
10:46Public safety is the interceptor's top priority and uncertain whether he's got a weapon, they draw their tasers.
10:53Mr. Police, can you answer me?
10:58There's no reply, so the team enter with caution with tasers at the ready.
11:03Do me a favour, mate.
11:07Where are you going?
11:09Where are you?
11:11Here.
11:12Can you just stand up for me?
11:14What are you doing? Are you laying on your bed at the moment?
11:16Yeah.
11:17OK, I need to speak to you, so could you do me a favour and just stand up and let me see you?
11:22The man has violence markers and they suspect he may be getting ready to defend himself.
11:27I'll just speak to you, so come here a second.
11:29He's getting something, Sam.
11:30What are you getting?
11:31That's a blade, mate. That's something metal.
11:34The interceptors are on high alert.
11:37What's he arrestable for?
11:39I'm going to stop walking.
11:41See you, Al.
11:43Why is wrong?
11:44Do me a favour.
11:45Why so many people?
11:46Why so many people?
11:47Why so many people?
11:48What?
11:49OK.
11:50Do you want to just say the word?
11:51You're under arrest, OK, for common assaults.
11:53OK, you don't have to say if it would have been harm or defected if you don't met you in question.
11:56Something that you let around the court and if you do say maybe we've been in evidence, all right?
11:59You've assaulted some staff here today. It's an allegation.
12:02We'll get it sorted, mate.
12:03Just follow my commands for me.
12:05Turn around for me. Place your hands on your head.
12:07Mate, please don't have a taser.
12:09Around 50,000 cops are assaulted in the line of duty each year
12:12and Chris has no plans to be one of them.
12:15Let's just get it sorted, yeah?
12:17Nah.
12:19You're going to take this back now and leave me there.
12:21I don't want to make this any more difficult, right?
12:24You're going to make this difficult, right?
12:25You're going to make this difficult.
12:27You're going to make this difficult.
12:28Listen.
12:30Colin behind me has a taser at the moment, OK?
12:33I don't want you to do anything silly.
12:36The suspect's not complying and appears to be reaching for something.
12:40Just turn around.
12:41Take your hands out of your pockets.
12:42Hands out of your pockets. Do it now.
12:43Take your hands out of your pockets.
12:44You've got two red dots on you.
12:46If you pull anything out of us, you're going to get tasered.
12:49Turn around, put your hands on your bank. Do it now.
12:52There you are.
12:54Stay there. Do not move.
12:57He's got a history of violence and may be armed.
13:00They're running out of options.
13:02Stay back.
13:04Stay back.
13:05Stay there.
13:06Stay there.
13:07Stay there.
13:08Stay there.
13:09F***.
13:10F***.
13:12F***.
13:13Yeah.
13:14Come on.
13:16There we are.
13:18Hands around you're back.
13:2050,000 volts have done their job and it's on with the bracelets.
13:24I told you to keep your hands out of your pockets.
13:26One, one. Subject secure.
13:29You alright mate? You're okay?
13:31Yeah?
13:32You sound? You sound now?
13:33Yeah?
13:35A taser shock can cause uncontrollable muscle contractions, but the effects soon wear off.
13:41We're going to have to take the barbs out of your face, alright?
13:43Yeah.
13:44Ready?
13:45Do you want to stand up mate?
13:46Yeah.
13:47One, two, three, onto your feet.
13:48There we go.
13:49A barb from the taser is still in his leg.
13:59And another one's lodged somewhere much more delicate.
14:02Are we going to say leave that one in and HGP do it?
14:04Yeah?
14:06Taser pulses can also temporarily affect brain and speech function.
14:14But this bloke's mouth seems to be working just fine.
14:17Do it.
14:18You can get away from me.
14:21The taser team aren't going to let a few barbed comments shock them.
14:25You're just going to get out of here.
14:26It's fine mate, you're fine mate.
14:27You're going to be alright in the back of the head?
14:29It's fine mate.
14:30But while they're happy to take a few insults on the chin.
14:33Don't start that.
14:34Threats to police property aren't taken so lightly.
14:38Don't start being silly.
14:39Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
14:42Relax.
14:44He's come to the door.
14:45He's hidden intoxicated through something.
14:46Quite aggressive towards us.
14:48We've heard something metallic sounds like a knife or weapon.
14:51He's putting his hand in his pocket.
14:52He's advancing towards us.
14:53He's been challenged with a taser and he's not stopped.
14:55So he's been tasered.
14:57He's absolutely fine.
14:58Safely resolved the incident without any harm to anybody.
15:00And should be off to custody shortly.
15:02Mr. Short Fuse pleaded guilty to three counts of common assault.
15:08And using threatening behaviour.
15:10He received a 20 week suspended prison sentence.
15:13100 hours of unpaid work.
15:15And 25 rehab days.
15:32It's a late spring evening in Northampton.
15:36And while most of the town are already home from work, Chris is back on patrol.
15:42This time with Callum Donoghue, they're responding to the first job of their night shift.
15:47We are going to a report of a vehicle driving erratically a Mercedes A200 at the Holiday Inn on the Bedford Road in Northampton.
15:59The boys hammer it over to the three star hotel.
16:08To check in on a five star donut doing laps outside reception.
16:12Hotel guests film the wannabe boy racer complete lap after lap of his very own Holiday Inn Grand Prix.
16:23But this isn't Silverstone.
16:25The whirling donuts know Lewis Hamilton.
16:28And the only points he'll win are the ones likely to go on his licence.
16:32With Chris and Callum still a few miles away.
16:46Donut's dizzy enough to need a quick pit stop.
16:51Where he comes face to face with another unit.
16:54He can drive in a straight line after all.
17:00The response cops not pursuit trains so can't follow.
17:04Luckily Callum has passed every test there is.
17:09There is.
17:10And absolutely can.
17:126-1, contact contact, Bedford Road, general direction of town centre.
17:16The target flies past at F1 speeds.
17:18Vehicle is failing to stop. Can I have him on channel please?
17:23The Merc's in danger of disappearing.
17:27But Callum hits warp drive and reins him in.
17:33At lane 2 or 2 traffic is medium.
17:36No pedestrians.
17:38DRA is low and proportions continue.
17:41The runaway raises the stakes as he goes wrong side of the tracks.
17:44Offences in question at this time is a domestic twot.
17:49Information comes in that the suspect's in his mum's car.
17:54Left left green ATS.
17:56But with driving this bad he's going to face more than just being grounded.
18:01Victoria Prom, advanced TPAC driver, unmarked advanced vehicle.
18:06Delivery driver ahead, 10 o'clock.
18:08At high risk temporarily, nearly a collision.
18:14Just eat was nearly dead meat.
18:19The Merc missed him by inches.
18:21And while the boy racer blows a red with no thought for other drivers.
18:27Callum can't afford to be so reckless.
18:31We're held ATS, wait.
18:36The runaway's disregard for the public gives him a big advantage.
18:41Temporary loss, keep going straight, keep going straight.
18:44And Chris and Callum have, once again, been held up by traffic.
18:48Straight on, red ATS.
18:50He's continued on past the wee binding car to the offside.
18:53We're held, red ATS, temporary loss.
18:55Again, such a high risk driver, the odds were always against them on the busy roads.
19:05Have you called up total loss?
19:08Yeah.
19:09It's total loss this time.
19:11Mate, we were never going to keep up with him like that going through the traffic.
19:14But he would drive like nothing.
19:15Let us know that slippery fish inevitably resurface.
19:20And with a net round the area, it's not long before they land Mum's 40 grand Merc and haul in the one that got away.
19:28Doughnuts down at the Nick, where Callum and Chris drop in for a few words.
19:45You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you don't mention them in question.
19:48Something which you later on in court, and if you do so, maybe you'll never lose.
19:51The driver received no further action for taking his mum's car.
19:57But for dangerous driving and other unrelated offences, he received a total of 19 months behind bars and a 38 month driving back.
20:10It's been a frustrating but ultimately successful end to their shift.
20:14I don't really know why he's driven the way he has.
20:18He's now going to lose his licence for essentially a two minute pursuit, which was a really bad decision.
20:24But he's now going to have to deal with the consequences for the rest of his life.
20:28His insurance is never going to be cheap.
20:30And he's probably going to get disqualified for a couple of years for it.
20:33But we all have the choice in life and he's picked the wrong one today, unfortunately.
20:37Still to come.
20:44Okay, he is continuing, er, weaving through the traffic at high speed, have I?
20:48A pursuit across multiple counties.
20:51Okay, the vehicle's offered to the services.
20:54Comes to a smashing end for Dan and the team.
20:56This chap's under arrest for section four, he's off his face.
21:05And a drug-fuelled driver on the M1.
21:08What are they?
21:10Antibiotics.
21:12Antibiotics, what for?
21:14Looks to be on more than just prescription medicine.
21:17He is probably one of the most intoxicated people I've seen.
21:20Temporarily high risk through a red ATS.
21:36When a runaway makes a play too dangerous to follow.
21:40Oh, it's an abort from us, he's gone the wrong way, down Bedford bypass.
21:44Bypass.
21:47The interceptors have an ace up their sleeve.
21:51Yeah, impasse 5-1, Bedworth bypass northbound on the wrong way, stand by.
21:58And with the eye in the sky.
22:00Impasse 5-1, crash, crash at Newton Road.
22:03Guiding the game on the ground.
22:05Got two outs, stand by.
22:07Hey, no! I'm just flying now!
22:10Person on the ground nearest the road is you're going to be a driver.
22:14It's always a winning hand.
22:20Impasse is probably one of the most valuable tools that we can use.
22:24Mainly because they can have a bird's eye view of the whole situation, the whole pursuit.
22:32So impasse just allows us that bit of time to back off, formulate a plan,
22:36keep eyes on them, keep commentary and tell us where they are basically.
22:39It's the wee small hours on Monday morning.
22:46And Impasse is tracking a Skoda Octavia on clone plates that's failed to stop for the West Midlands Force.
22:54OK, vehicle is still late to M6.
23:00They don't know why the driver's made off, but he's clearly got something to hide.
23:07Light traffic ahead still as he approaches the Corley services.
23:12The choppers track the runaway Skoda into Warwickshire.
23:16Vehicle straddling lanes two and three, still passing slow moving vehicle at speed.
23:21And it's heading for North Hans at a high rate of knots.
23:24OK, he is continuing, weaving through the traffic at a high speed level.
23:32Good comms between air support and the units below will be the key to stopping the target.
23:38Thanks. I've notified North Hans.
23:43They're asking if you can go to their in-tops three, channel three,
23:48and they can start planning some stuff up ahead to try and get it stopped.
23:52North Hamptonshire ground units, including Dan Bradley Brophy,
23:57start to gather a greeting party.
23:59We're just going to head towards the M1 now, just see if we can get in a decent position to try and help out.
24:06OK, vehicles moving to lane one near side.
24:10The Skoda is weaving its way towards a warm welcome.
24:14He's undertaking lorries and the slow moving vehicles.
24:18It is just about to approach Junction 1M6 over.
24:21Because units from all over the county are plotting up, prying to intercept.
24:25We'll head up to the north of the town just in case it should come off 14 and come down forwards.
24:32North Hamptons.
24:34And he's off on the 508, off on the 508.
24:40However, the suspects come off the motorway and taken a different route.
24:44Yeah, he's gone into, left into Mercedes Avenue, or he's just pulling up at the side at the moment, over.
24:50He's either trying to give the interceptors the run around.
24:53And looks to be doing a reciprocal bank.
24:57Or is completely lost.
25:01He's just slowing down. No, he's doing a reciprocal 180 standby.
25:04But there's no escaping the eye in the sky.
25:07OK, back on the roundabout of the A14.
25:09Just half a mile away, Dan joins up with a firearms unit.
25:21Tom, I think I'm with you now.
25:23And the interceptors assemble.
25:24As N-PASS guides them into their target.
25:37I think we've got mobiles now with this vehicle.
25:39The ground units finally have their prey in sight.
25:50OK, the vehicle's offered to the services north side of the A14.
25:54Just up towards the lorry park.
25:56He's going the wrong way down the road.
25:57They clearly haven't to scooby where they're going, or that North Hand's finest are about to pounce.
26:05Look to reinforce.
26:08When the driver pulls onto the garage forecourt,
26:11the cops have a prime opportunity to bring this two-hour cross-country pursuit to a close.
26:17Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
26:30Oh, no.
26:32Oh, it's alleviate the, it's okay.
26:35So, it's like that.
26:37Oh, it's a little bit.
26:40Oh, yeah.
26:42Oh, yeah, we're going to go.
26:43On the floor!
26:45On the floor!
26:47On the floor now!
26:49Down! Down!
26:51Down!
26:53Down!
26:55The driver
26:57and passenger are finally
26:59in bracelets.
27:03Despite their best efforts
27:05to escape with a reverse ram.
27:07And having tracked these guys
27:13for over 75 miles.
27:15Edgy, firm pass.
27:17If it's in order, we'll head back towards base.
27:19The eye in the sky bows out.
27:21Thank you very much.
27:27Back on the ground,
27:29it becomes clear why they've been so shy of a meet-up
27:31with the cops.
27:33Yeah, yeah.
27:35Back eye looks like a load of gear
27:37that we suggest relates to
27:39cannabis grows.
27:41So we've got plants,
27:43lamps, all that sort of stuff.
27:45So whether they've emptied it,
27:47stolen it, we'll find out.
27:49But we've got two in custody for it
27:51at the moment, so great work.
27:53These guys could have robbed a cannabis farm.
27:55Or it could be their own crop.
27:57Either way, they're in it
27:59up to their necks.
28:01Stand up now.
28:03So I don't want you standing up
28:05with your hands behind your back, mate,
28:07because you'll fall over.
28:09Your trousers are also around your knees, mate.
28:11I'll get some more of everything.
28:13He's a happy soul, but the contents of his footwells
28:15are far from funny.
28:17In the car.
28:19There's a big coffee knife on the footwell
28:21and a carry bag full of cannabis as well.
28:23There'll be a few hundred quid's worth of cannabis there.
28:25These two herberts are clearly up
28:27to no good tonight.
28:29While Dan likes a trip to the zoo,
28:31his real preference is to see
28:33criminals behind bars.
28:35And one of the herberts
28:37has a confession.
28:39The weed's mine, yeah? I ain't fussed.
28:41I can't lie,
28:43if these I didn't get it,
28:45then I would have made it into any vows, yeah?
28:47Masterchefs cough to the weed,
28:49and the exhaustive search continues.
28:51No.
28:53It's a catalytic converter, is it?
28:59As for the herberts,
29:01their cross-country jaunt is over.
29:03Thanks to North Hans,
29:05and a little help from above.
29:07Good teamwork between us,
29:09so, and off the impasse,
29:11kept observations all the way through,
29:13so without them, I think we potentially
29:15could have lost that, so, yeah, fantastic.
29:21The case for possession of a knife
29:23in a public place, and possession of cannabis
29:25was transferred to another force.
29:29Following an investigation,
29:31the suspects received no further action,
29:33due to insufficient evidence.
29:35The case for possession of cannabis.
29:39Do you take drugs at all?
29:41No.
29:42Once upon a time,
29:43it was tough to prove a driver
29:44was under the influence of drugs.
29:47Just get some saliva on the MDX 24, mate.
29:50That all changed in 2015,
29:52with the introduction of a lick and nick game-changer.
29:55It's testing positive for cocaine.
29:58The roadside drug wipe.
30:00So, at this moment in time,
30:01you're under arrest.
30:02OK, I'm suspicious of drug drive.
30:08Before, it was simply down to doing a FIT test,
30:11a field impairment test.
30:13And that's where you get people at the side of the road
30:15putting their finger on their nose
30:16and trying to balance.
30:18We were sort of limited with how easy it was
30:20to detect the drug.
30:21But with the drug wipe screening device,
30:23it would tell us at the side of the road
30:26pretty accurately
30:27if they're over the limit
30:29for cannabis and cocaine.
30:33Drug wipes have driven a steady rise
30:35in convictions of drivers
30:36influenced by coke or weed.
30:39Unfortunately,
30:40some drivers use other drugs
30:41and catching them is a bigger challenge.
30:48It's the morning shift
30:49and Interceptor Tom Williams
30:51is invisible on the M1.
30:53We're in the unmarked car today.
30:55The advantages of the unmarked car
30:56is obviously people don't know we're there.
30:57So, it's kind of
30:58seeing people's true driving
31:00and just gives us that element of surprise.
31:05A touch of wood so far,
31:06everyone's been fairly well behaved.
31:08It's a sunny day with clear roads.
31:12Roger.
31:13But things look less rosy
31:14a few junctions ahead.
31:16I'm called from the Highways Agency
31:18that they've got a car
31:20that's in the live lane
31:21with a driver unresponsive.
31:23We'll have to see what he's like
31:25when we get there.
31:26Here we go.
31:32Show me 10-6.
31:34We should put the matrix board on.
31:35The driver's out of the car
31:39and all over the shop.
31:40Hello.
31:41Hello.
31:42How are you?
31:43You alright?
31:44You alright?
31:45What's going on?
31:46I don't know.
31:47What are you here for?
31:48I don't know.
31:49What are you here for?
31:51I don't know.
31:52Okay.
31:53Come and have a seat in my car
31:54for two seconds mate.
31:55I'm just going to grab hold of your hand
31:56because you've...
31:57No.
31:58No.
31:59He's not filming me.
32:00No, he's not filming you.
32:01He's filming me.
32:02He's filming me.
32:03He's filming me.
32:04Yeah, he's filming me.
32:05It's a moment in time
32:06you're under arrest
32:07on suspicion of driving
32:08whilst he's running.
32:09No.
32:10No.
32:11He's filming me.
32:12He's filming me.
32:13He's filming me.
32:14Yeah, he's filming me.
32:15It's a moment in time
32:16you're under arrest
32:17on suspicion of driving
32:18whilst unfit through drugs.
32:19Alright?
32:20Pass me that hand.
32:21Pass me that hand.
32:23I'll be putting the clothes around.
32:25Cheers, buddy.
32:26Let go of your vape.
32:28Let go of your vape.
32:30As I say,
32:34you're under arrest
32:35on suspicion of driving
32:36whilst unfit through drink
32:37or drugs at the moment in time.
32:38In case you don't have to say anything
32:39but it may harm you defence.
32:40Do you want to mention
32:41when questioned something
32:42which is allowed in court
32:43anything you do say
32:44may be in evidence.
32:45Alright?
32:46Let's go and see you
32:47in back of my car.
32:506-1.
32:51You got an ETA 4-1-1?
32:53Just come up to 15 now, mate.
32:55Lovely.
32:56Cheers, mate.
32:57This chap's under arrest
32:58for section 4.
32:59He's off his face.
33:00Erm...
33:01Just might need a hand
33:02with transport
33:03if that's alright.
33:04He might need a hand
33:05with transport
33:06to Tom's car.
33:07Cheers, mate.
33:09Alright.
33:10You plunk yourself in there
33:11for two seconds, mate.
33:12Alright.
33:13Is it your car, mate?
33:14Yeah.
33:15Watch your head.
33:16Just before you get in
33:17let me just quickly
33:18give you a search.
33:19Just stand up a second.
33:20What have you got on you?
33:21What?
33:22What have you got on you?
33:23Just cigarettes?
33:24No.
33:25What are they?
33:26Antibiotics.
33:27Antibiotics.
33:28Antibiotics.
33:29What for?
33:30Yeah.
33:31What for?
33:32No.
33:33What for?
33:34It looks like he's on
33:35more than antibiotics.
33:37Do you want to take a seat
33:38in there for me?
33:39The question is...
33:41What?
33:42Pop that foot in there, mate.
33:43What's going on?
33:44You're under arrest
33:45at this moment, Tom,
33:46on suspicion of driving
33:47whilst unfit through drugs.
33:48Alright.
33:49And the reason being,
33:51you're very unsteady
33:52on your feet, okay?
33:53Your speech is very slurred,
33:55and you've got white powder
33:56all up your nose.
33:57Okay?
33:58Could be a tough case to crack.
34:00Are you known to the police
34:01for anything, mate?
34:02Erm...
34:04Say it again.
34:05Are you known to the police
34:06for anything?
34:07No.
34:08Have you got any medical problems,
34:09anything like that?
34:10No.
34:11No, you're all good, yeah?
34:12No.
34:136-1, I think...
34:14Did you say an ambulance was called?
34:15If so, you can cancel them.
34:16There's nothing on this bloke.
34:17I think he's just
34:18under the influence of drugs
34:19rather than anything medical.
34:20Copy.
34:21His behaviour isn't consistent
34:22with cocaine or cannabis use.
34:24He's more spaced out.
34:26Though Spaceman
34:27is occasionally
34:28coming back to Earth.
34:30Oh, no way.
34:32What?
34:33We're being filmed for this.
34:36Say again, bud.
34:37Yeah.
34:38Tom isn't bothering
34:39with the roadside drug wipe
34:41as he suspects this guy
34:42is on something other
34:43than coke or weed.
34:45And he has the right
34:46to haul him into the neck
34:47for a blood test.
34:48What the plan is going to be,
34:50just waiting for my colleagues
34:51to come down, OK?
34:52Then we're going to be
34:53taking you to custody, OK?
34:54Yeah, you understand that?
34:56It's pretty clear.
34:59Say that again.
35:00So my colleagues are going to be
35:02coming here very shortly
35:03and we're going to be
35:04taking you to custody.
35:05Police station.
35:06OK.
35:07OK.
35:08We need to do some procedures
35:10with you in terms of you
35:11potentially being under the influence
35:12of drink or drugs.
35:13All right, mate?
35:14Can I go to prison all night?
35:16No, not necessarily, mate.
35:17I don't think so.
35:18The driver has a date with custody,
35:20where a blood test
35:21should provide some answers.
35:22I think he's said to
35:23our highways colleagues
35:24that he's taken some ketamine.
35:25Which might not be necessary.
35:27It turns out spaceman's told highways
35:29he's spaced out on ketamine,
35:31an anaesthetic that distorts perception
35:32of sight and sound.
35:33Basically, the M1's worst nightmare.
35:36It turns out spaceman's told highways
35:38he's spaced out on ketamine,
35:40an anaesthetic that distorts perception
35:42of sight and sound.
35:43Basically, the M1's worst nightmare.
35:46I know highway said that he was unfit,
35:49but he is probably one of the
35:52most intoxicated people I've seen.
35:54Clearly not fit to drive,
35:57can't speak, can't walk,
36:00and has got the remnants of
36:02obviously a good night last night
36:03up his nose still.
36:05So thankfully he's only
36:07crashed into the barrier
36:08and not someone else
36:09because I think he potentially
36:10could have caused some serious problems
36:12on the motorway.
36:13But thankfully we've got him now
36:14and we'll deal with him.
36:15And once Rachel searches the car,
36:18there's potentially more to deal with.
36:20I've found what I believe
36:24is going to be the drugs.
36:26He's got a silly bag of white
36:28rustling powder.
36:30Yeah, I've got his drugs.
36:31Beautiful.
36:32You further underestimate
36:34on suspicion of possession
36:35of controlled substance.
36:36OK, mate, you're still under caution,
36:38alright, but...
36:39Under caution?
36:40He's lucky he's not under six feet of soil.
36:43He's lucky he hasn't killed himself,
36:45but he's lucky he hasn't killed anyone else.
36:47Come to rest in lane one of the M1.
36:50At least we've got him.
36:51No one's hurt.
36:52He's not hurt.
36:53We take it to Preston,
36:55look after him there.
36:56We're good to go, mate, alright.
36:57We're going.
36:58We're going.
36:59The spaceman,
37:00who landed himself on the M1,
37:02pleaded guilty to drug driving
37:04and received an eight-week suspended sentence
37:06and a 29-month driving ban.
37:08He also received a community resolution
37:11for possession of a Class B drug.
37:13No surprises there,
37:14given he coughed up to taking ketamine.
37:17That is used normally as a horse tranquiliser,
37:20you know, to put animals under sedation.
37:23So the fact that he's been driving
37:25whilst basically sedated,
37:26beggars belief,
37:27if he hadn't crashed into the barrier
37:28and crashed into a family driving,
37:30you know,
37:31he potentially could have been looking
37:32at the fatalities on the motorway.
37:33You know,
37:34you're driving a two-ton killing machine
37:36that you've got no awareness of,
37:38you know, what you're doing.
37:39It's just a recipe for disaster,
37:41in my opinion.
37:42Still to come...
37:47All I wanted was...
37:48What?
37:49Some crisp.
37:50You don't need to sweat.
37:51A motorist with the munchies in Wellingborough.
37:54That's it.
37:55You've tested positive for cannabis.
37:57So this might have been positive
37:58about two hours ago.
38:12Number plate cloning is a growing problem in the UK.
38:18The cops are keen to end that trend
38:20and in Wellingborough,
38:21firearms units have just stopped a Vauxhall Astra
38:24they suspect to be on false plates.
38:27Sandra Payne and Joe Wood
38:29are heading over to assist.
38:31It's pulled over as if it was
38:34stopping,
38:35taking a natural stop.
38:36And then as they've put the lights on next to it,
38:39it's made off, albeit briefly.
38:42And the clone could just be to disguise
38:45documents offences
38:46or it could be more sinister,
38:48used in crime.
38:50Sinister or otherwise,
38:52Joe and Sandra are en route.
38:54The clone-mobile contain four wannabe TV stars.
39:10We're on interceptors, man.
39:12Oh, we're on interceptors, Wayne.
39:14How are you doing all right?
39:16Oh, we're on interceptors.
39:18Who you got?
39:20Hey, that is mad.
39:22What's your name, chap?
39:24Jamie.
39:25Jamie Norris.
39:26Joe deals with one of the passengers.
39:29This chap's been detained for a section one search.
39:35While Sandra tackles the driver.
39:37And where are you from?
39:38I'm from London.
39:39You are from London.
39:40He's already been arrested for no licence or insurance,
39:44so it could be a long walk home.
39:46What are you doing in Wellingborough at the minute, then?
39:48What's the purpose of your journey tonight?
39:50No comment.
39:51No comment?
39:52No comment.
39:53Tricky types, like the no comment kid,
39:55don't faze a pro like Sandra,
39:57whose least favourite customers are drink and drug drivers.
40:02Because you briefly fell to stop,
40:03I'm going to ask you to provide me with a specimen of breath.
40:05Have you had an alcoholic drink in the last 20 minutes?
40:07No.
40:08Have you had any mouthwash, dental preparation,
40:09cigarette or e-cigarette in the last five?
40:11No, no, no.
40:12I did want one just now.
40:15Is that because of the stress?
40:16Yeah, you've got a stress in me out,
40:18because now I've got to find my way home on foot, you know?
40:23Keep going, keep going, keep going.
40:24That's zero.
40:25Zero!
40:26Told ya!
40:27There's no booze in his blood,
40:28but there's something dodgy in his boot.
40:30The cops suspect these are the Vauxhall's genuine plates.
40:33I'm going to take my glasses off and get a quick shot of them.
40:36He's remarkably chipper for a man facing multiple charges.
40:40You know, I've got excited because I've never been on TV.
40:41Yeah.
40:42There you go.
40:43Am I free to go, yeah?
40:44Yeah, just stay away from these guys.
40:45The bit-park passengers exit stage left for the long trip home.
41:00But there's a soft bed at the nick for the star of the small screen.
41:04Do I have a cigarette?
41:05No, you're under arrest.
41:07It's not allowed.
41:08Yes.
41:09And it's not just fags on the superstar's rider.
41:12All I wanted was a bit.
41:13What?
41:14Some crisps.
41:15You don't need to swear.
41:16Okay.
41:17Yeah.
41:18Denied treats, his mood seems to be changing.
41:20I appreciate that.
41:21Yeah, no, but I've tried to be nice.
41:22I have tried to be nice.
41:23Have I not?
41:24I've not been disrespectful not once.
41:26You're going to let me speak?
41:27Not once.
41:28No, I'm not even going to speak no more,
41:29because it's just like, you know what?
41:31The respect is not being shown back.
41:32Okay.
41:33Joe's return with the packet.
41:35Unfortunately for the driver,
41:36it doesn't contain any crisps.
41:39Have you done a drug wipe before?
41:40What?
41:41Have you done a drug wipe before?
41:42No, you did a breath test for alcohol.
41:45So, because I've got reasonable grounds to suspect that you've committed a moving traffic offence
41:49under the terms of Section 6 of the Road Traffic Act 1988,
41:52and requiring you to provide a sample of saliva for a roadside drug wipe?
41:56What if I don't?
41:57Failure to do so without a reasonable excuse is an offence,
42:00and will render you liable to prosecution.
42:02Do you agree to provide a sample of saliva for a roadside drug wipe?
42:05Not yet, I want my solicitor.
42:06And if not, what is your reason for refusing?
42:07I want a solicitor.
42:08I want a solicitor first, please.
42:09Okay.
42:10Luckily, Joe knows a bit about the law.
42:13Requesting a solicitor.
42:14It's not a reasonable excuse.
42:15Before I say anything more, I want a solicitor.
42:18That's it.
42:19So, I'll ask you one more time.
42:20Are you willing at this moment?
42:21I'm willing.
42:22I'm willing, but not at this point.
42:23Okay.
42:24So, because you're not...
42:25I'm not refusing.
42:26Because you're not willing to provide me with a sample here and there.
42:27You can hear me on camera.
42:28I am not refusing.
42:29Okay.
42:30I am not refusing.
42:31And that'll be liable, do I?
42:32And to really prove he's not refusing...
42:34All right.
42:35Go on.
42:36Take the saliva.
42:37Go on.
42:38Sit down, buddy.
42:39I don't want to sit down no more.
42:40I'm done with sitting down.
42:41Well, you do need to calm yourself down, though, because you're getting yourself a bit excitable
42:44for not much of a reason.
42:46Just stop talking to me.
42:47Just stop talking to me and then I'll be fine.
42:49He seems to like opening his mouth, which is perfect for Joe.
42:53Stick your tongue out.
42:54Nice and far.
42:55Right out.
43:00That's it.
43:01You were all smiley a minute ago.
43:04What after a cigarette?
43:05That's it.
43:06Took your saliva ting.
43:07Take me to the station.
43:08Let's go.
43:09The saliva ting takes eight minutes to come through.
43:13Plenty of time to get to know each other a little better.
43:16What's your name?
43:18Hello.
43:19What's your name?
43:21Me.
43:22Joe.
43:23Joe?
43:24Mm-hmm.
43:25Nice to meet you, Joe.
43:26You too.
43:27What's your name?
43:28Sandra.
43:29Sandra.
43:30Nice to meet you, camera lady.
43:32And now we're all best friends.
43:34Let's hope we never meet again.
43:36What is it?
43:37We can't swerve tough conversations.
43:39See, it's a CL there, control line.
43:41That means?
43:42That means that for cannabis and cocaine, the test is working, which is why there's a line
43:45at each.
43:46Yeah, so what is it?
43:47Unfortunately for you, also under TL, which is trace line, there's also a sign for cannabis,
43:51which means that you've tested positive for cannabis.
43:54It's been a bad night for him, but he's trying to look at the positives.
43:55Oh well.
43:56Night away from the kids, eh?
43:57Good night sleep.
43:58Sleepy Head's nightmare turned into a reality.
43:59That's it.
44:00This is a bad night for him, but he's trying to look at the positives.
44:05Oh well.
44:06Night away from the kids, eh?
44:07Good night sleep.
44:08It's been a bad night for him, but he's trying to look at the positives.
44:24Sleepyhead's nightmare turned into a reality
44:27when he was banned for 12 months for drug driving
44:29and without a licence or insurance and on fraudulent plates.
44:36He was up and down, wasn't he?
44:38He wasn't happy with me when the drug wipe came out
44:40and then at the suggestion that he might not be coming into the cells if he passed it
44:44he was all nice again, but it didn't work out for him in the end
44:47so no, good result, getting him off the street.
