03:37this first panel discussion is for you.
03:40We're going to explore the rise and the risk of weight loss trends
03:44that have so many of us in a chokehold.
03:47Now, I'm of the belief that the summer gonna get the body, I'ma give it.
03:53Am I alone in my belief?
03:55Okay, I know that's right.
03:56The summer gonna get the body, I'ma give it.
03:58All right?
03:58So, please welcome to the stage Essence Senior Lifestyle Editor,
04:04Victoria Owumarogi, board-certified physician,
04:08Dr. Courtney Arianne Washington,
04:11and international doctor and public health educator,
04:14Dr. Eric Griggs.
04:16Make some noise!
04:17Hello, hello, hello.
04:26How's everybody doing out there?
04:30Well, good morning, Essence family.
04:32As you heard, my name is Victoria Owumarogi,
04:35and I am the Senior Lifestyle Editor for Essence Magazine,
04:38and I am so excited and honored to be here
04:41to dive into this much-needed conversation
04:43about the new era of diet and weight loss
04:45with Dr. Courtney Washington and Dr. Eric Griggs.
04:48Everybody give it up for them real fast.
04:50Go ahead and sit down.
04:53All right, so let's get started.
04:55Dr. Washington, let's start with you.
04:57So, we're here to talk about the importance
04:58of protecting our bodies as black women.
05:01As a primary care physician here in New Orleans,
05:03I'm sure you see firsthand some of the issues
05:05our community faces when it comes to obesity
05:07and the resulting complications.
05:10Can you talk a bit about your experience with this
05:12and why you think it impacts our community
05:13even more than others?
05:15Yes, so, being from New Orleans,
05:18I see three groups of women
05:19that struggle with their weight.
05:21Either they've had a problem with their weight
05:24when they were younger and their relationship with food,
05:26maybe it was for comfort.
05:28The second group is those who gain weight
05:30from a stressful life event or pregnancy,
05:32and then also as we age.
05:34So, when it comes to that,
05:35it's deeper than just the outward appearance
05:38is how it makes you feel.
05:40And also, the comorbid conditions
05:42that come along with that,
05:43like the risk for diabetes
05:44or development of that or hypertension.
05:47And so, not only is it just like a physical issue,
05:50it's a medical issue as well.
05:53So, a lot of people are hesitant to talk about it.
05:57They're scared of medications
05:58and they go and use Dr. Google.
06:00But, the impact is so great
06:02because this is your life.
06:04This is your livelihood.
06:05It affects pregnancy,
06:06leading to preeclampsia
06:08and different things like that.
06:09So, I just try to make women feel welcome,
06:12explain the science,
06:14the need for medication
06:15and healthy lifestyle changes,
06:17and make them understand it more
06:19than just saying,
06:20oh, just try this drug.
06:21No, we're going to explain it.
06:22We're going to talk about it
06:23so you know your health conditions
06:25and how to get better.
06:27Nice.
06:27Dr. Griggs,
06:28you're both here locally in New Orleans
06:30and around the country
06:31you've become known for your motto,
06:32get checked,
06:33get fit,
06:34get moving.
06:35All right.
06:36Can you take a moment
06:36to break down
06:37why it's so important
06:38for our communities
06:39to do all three of these things?
06:41Yeah, so the important thing,
06:42first of all,
06:43thank you,
06:43this is amazing.
06:46You know,
06:46it's important
06:47when I say get checked.
06:48It's more than just going to the doctor.
06:50It's climbing our family trees.
06:52We do the same thing every year.
06:54Every time it happens,
06:55there's a funeral.
06:55We say,
06:56hey,
06:56you know,
06:57we're going to get together
06:57and we're going to talk
06:58and it never happens.
07:00We don't talk about health
07:01enough in our family
07:02so get checked
07:03as climbing your family tree
07:05and there'll be amazing things
07:06that you'll find.
07:07This time last year,
07:08I found my father.
07:10Holy smokes.
07:11Yeah,
07:11and we started talking
07:12about health histories.
07:14I know that I need to be checked
07:15for certain things now
07:16because they're genetic.
07:18Going to the doctor once a year
07:19is something that we don't think about.
07:21Now,
07:21we'll plan a trip
07:22like this,
07:24but we won't plan that doctor visit.
07:27My advice before you go plan your trips,
07:30plan your doctor visit,
07:31your annual wellness visit.
07:32If you're a sports fanatic,
07:33plan your team.
07:35When your team is getting ready
07:35for the season,
07:36you'll go get checked up
07:37for the season
07:38because if you like the saints,
07:39they'll give you heart trouble.
07:40The other thing is
07:44having conversations about food.
07:47That's why I'm really,
07:47really privileged and honored
07:48to be on this panel.
07:50We've vilified food.
07:51We've vilified our bodies
07:52and we're just,
07:53we're too beautiful of a people
07:54to be even doing any of it.
07:56We make amazing foods.
07:58We make amazing,
07:58beautiful people.
07:59So understanding what to eat,
08:01how to eat,
08:01and what works best for your body
08:03and then get with your family
08:04and eat together.
08:05And the last part is get moving.
08:07Get checked,
08:07get fit,
08:07get moving.
08:08That's something that we do really well.
08:09Just find something you like to do
08:11and do it.
08:12I have no rhythm.
08:13I can't dance,
08:13but you can't tell me
08:14that I can't dance.
08:15I'm moving.
08:16Mind your business.
08:17Mind your business.
08:18So these are important
08:19conversations to have.
08:20Nice.
08:20I love that.
08:21So there are weight loss companies
08:22that we've all grown up,
08:24you know,
08:24knowing and being familiar with
08:25like the Jenny Craig's
08:26and Weight Watchers
08:27and they're suffering
08:28significant losses
08:29because people are just not
08:31making use of weight loss programs
08:33like they used to anymore.
08:34So now they're looking
08:35for quicker fixes
08:36like the weight loss
08:37prescription drugs.
08:38Can you both explain
08:39us some of the risks
08:41that are associated
08:41with using these drugs,
08:43some of their benefits
08:43and as popular
08:45as these drugs are,
08:46what would you say
08:47that people need to know
08:48about them
08:48before considering use?
08:50Let's start with you,
08:50Dr. Washington.
08:51So I use semiglutide
08:53or Ozempic
08:53in my practice
08:54as well as Monjaro.
08:55They are great drugs.
08:57They work very, very well,
08:58but it's important
08:59to always work up
09:00secondary causes
09:01of obesity.
09:03So being a physician
09:04allows me to really do
09:06like Dr. Griggs mentioned.
09:08Do that work up,
09:09get that family history
09:10and talk about
09:11why you are obese.
09:13The quick fix
09:13doesn't mean
09:14that it's going to be
09:15a long-term fix.
09:16So I believe that the reason
09:17that Jenny Craig
09:18is suffering financial losses
09:20is because patients
09:20are now seeing that
09:21you can go and see your doctor,
09:23get a thorough work up
09:24and especially in my practice,
09:25we talk about lifestyle changes,
09:27how to read a nutrition label.
09:29You think you're eating
09:30something organic, right?
09:32But you don't understand
09:33how to read that nutrition label
09:34and that it's processed,
09:36pushing more fresh foods
09:37and things like that.
09:38And it's not going to be always
09:40just a quick fix, right?
09:42Because we don't want
09:43to gain the weight back.
09:44The medication is going to make
09:45you lose weight regardless,
09:47but you can't sustain it
09:49if you're not eating well.
09:50So that's usually my big practice.
09:52But the side effects
09:53of the medication,
09:54if you're not getting it
09:55from a licensed physician,
09:57from a certified compounding pharmacy,
10:00and if you're getting it
10:01from out of the country,
10:02you don't know what's in that drug.
10:05So I work in the ER as well.
10:06And what I see is
10:07people go over to Mexico
10:09and they'll come in
10:10with big bruises.
10:12Their liver enzymes are elevated
10:13and I cannot tell you
10:15what was in that drug.
10:16So that's a huge side effect
10:18that I see from the drugs
10:19that are used off label
10:20or you're taking the wrong dose.
10:23I have, I've experienced people
10:24that have taken their other
10:26family members,
10:27Ozempic at the highest dose.
10:29You're going to cause liver
10:30failure.
10:31The positives about the drug,
10:32if you're going to an actual physician
10:34and they're working you up,
10:36is that nutritional counseling
10:38is going to take away
10:39the hunger sensation
10:40in your brain.
10:41It's going to help your body
10:42use and process the foods
10:43that you eat more efficiently
10:44and target your body
10:46to use more of the fat cells
10:48for energy
10:49so you're able to lose weight.
10:51But I cannot stress big enough,
10:54these internet,
10:55oh, get Ozempic for 200 bucks.
10:58Guys, even the compounded medication
10:59is more than 200 bucks.
11:01Do not budget shop on your body.
11:04This is your body.
11:05You only get one.
11:06Amen.
11:07Dr. Grace, what would you say?
11:08Yeah, so the only thing,
11:09the big thing that I'll add to that
11:11is the good thing about these drugs
11:13is the conversation
11:14that has taken place
11:15that obesity is,
11:17it's a disease.
11:18It's a chronic disease.
11:19Like, it's just like
11:20any other condition.
11:22There are medications
11:22that can help.
11:24Now, that moves into the mental
11:26because we've vilified ourselves.
11:29It took me a long 53 years
11:31to get this beautiful and fine,
11:33so it's going to take me
11:34at least five to ten years
11:37to get it to where
11:37it needs to be again, right?
11:39There's no such thing
11:40as a quick fix.
11:41But what you can change quickly
11:42is your body image.
11:44There's no pill.
11:45There's no shot.
11:46There's no magic.
11:47One, you can wave
11:48to all of a sudden
11:49look like you think
11:50it's going to take work.
11:51So all of these drugs,
11:53and I do emphasize
11:54they're drugs.
11:55The reason that you're paying more
11:56is because you get a whole,
11:57you get a whole doctor with it
11:58and a whole workup
11:59that you should get
12:00because everything that you take
12:02affects every part of your body.
12:05And it's irresponsible
12:06to get these
12:07without healthcare supervision
12:09because this might not
12:10be the one for you
12:11and it might not be
12:12the dose for you.
12:13But the important thing
12:14is to look in the mirror
12:15and understand these things
12:17are only going to help me
12:18be as beautiful
12:19as I know that I am.
12:20I can change my diet.
12:22I can exercise.
12:23I can laugh with friends
12:24and setting long-term goals.
12:26I'm going to lose
12:26your body safely.
12:28You can lose about
12:291 to 1.8 pounds a week
12:31safely without your body.
12:32Have you ever been
12:33on a diet before
12:33and it failed
12:35and ended up bigger than you were,
12:36more fine than you were before?
12:38It's because your body
12:40wasn't keeping up
12:41with what you were trying
12:41to do with it.
12:42Working with your body,
12:43being patient,
12:44giving yourself grace
12:45and knowing that
12:45you're beautiful every day
12:46will help you,
12:47along with the doctor,
12:49use these drugs properly.
12:50I love that.
12:51I love that.
12:51And Dr. Washington,
12:52in your opinion,
12:53what's the first course of action
12:54that someone should take
12:56if they know they have
12:56a significant amount
12:57of weight to lose
12:58and they don't want to go
12:59to the weight loss drug route?
13:01How do they start the path
13:02to get healthier
13:02or possibly to save
13:03their own life?
13:05Starts with finding
13:06a good primary care physician.
13:08Say it again.
13:09You need to cover
13:10your basics,
13:11your annual exam.
13:12If you go and you buy
13:13a Range Rover, right?
13:15You're going to go get
13:15the Range Rover's oil check
13:17when that light comes on
13:18and you're going to spend
13:19the amount of money
13:19and take it to the dealer.
13:21Your annual exam
13:22is very important.
13:23Family history,
13:24as Dr. Greg says,
13:25it's important
13:26because I'm going to be
13:27screening you
13:27for certain things,
13:28maybe younger,
13:30and find that out.
13:31So that's where
13:32you need to start first
13:33because I'm going to work up
13:34secondary causes of obesity
13:35or whatever's going on.
13:37So that's where you start.
13:38Second is going over,
13:40like he said,
13:41other things,
13:42your self-image.
13:43Depression can also
13:45lead to weight gain.
13:47If you're depressed,
13:48some people go get
13:49that big jar
13:50of Bluebell ice cream
13:51and they just gouge on it.
13:53So let's address
13:53the depression.
13:54I feel very seen right now.
13:56I feel attacked.
13:56Ain't nothing wrong
13:56with no Bluebell ice cream.
13:57I feel attacked right now.
13:59No judgment.
14:00But it's true.
14:02It's true.
14:02And they do that.
14:03So sometimes
14:04you don't need an ozempic.
14:05What you need is
14:06a diagnosis of depression.
14:08And every time I say
14:09depression,
14:09they're like,
14:09oh no.
14:10No.
14:10As black people,
14:12we need to talk about it.
14:13It is okay.
14:14Statistics show
14:14a good 80% of people
14:16will be clinically depressed
14:17at least one time
14:18in their life.
14:19There are medications
14:20that are safe
14:20that can treat
14:21that depression
14:22and now you're not
14:23overeating.
14:24So that's where we start.
14:26And also exercise,
14:27people.
14:28Not just walking.
14:29If you walk,
14:29oh I walk a lot
14:30from my job.
14:31No.
14:31That's not exercise.
14:33Exercise is saying,
14:34you know what,
14:34I'm making this time
14:35for myself.
14:36So you're giving yourself
14:37a mental break.
14:38You're preparing
14:38your body for that
14:39and you are doing
14:40exercises that are
14:42going to be good
14:42for your cardiovascular
14:43health and your
14:45overall well-being.
14:46It's for your brain
14:47and your body.
14:48So that's where you
14:49start before we even
14:50talk about weight loss
14:51drugs per se.
14:52I love that.
14:53You got to take care
14:53of the mind first
14:54and don't go ham
14:55on the Blue Bell,
14:56y'all.
14:56Share it.
14:57Sharing is caring.
15:00Sharing is caring.
15:01We're not talking
15:02about just you,
15:02Dr. Griggs.
15:03Look, if I see you
15:04in the whole food
15:05I feel so attacked.
15:08I'm going to be
15:08your accountability
15:09partner.
15:10Put that down.
15:11But no, Dr. Griggs,
15:12you created your
15:12foundation,
15:13the Dr. Griggs Foundation
15:14around the idea
15:15of promoting community
15:16health and wellness.
15:17So what are some
15:17of the initiatives
15:18that you've taken on
15:19to build awareness
15:20among our community
15:21about the importance
15:22of safe weight loss?
15:23Wow.
15:24So it's conversations
15:25going from church
15:26to church to school
15:27to school to anyone
15:28that will listen.
15:29Letting them know,
15:30first of all,
15:30that food is your friend.
15:32There's no such thing
15:33as bad food.
15:33There's just bad portions.
15:35And I educate.
15:35We've done bike rides.
15:36We've done the Bayou
15:37Classic events.
15:39The numerous walks.
15:40We've done the,
15:41what do you call it,
15:41the scavenger hunts
15:42all over the city.
15:43Trying to make it fun.
15:44If you trick people
15:45into being healthy,
15:47you make a lot of friends.
15:48But you got to trick them.
15:49Like even over today,
15:50I have hula hoops
15:51and I challenge anyone
15:52to a hula hoop contest.
15:53Did you know
15:54that you burn
15:54seven calories per minute
15:56that you hula hoop?
15:57Seven calories per minute.
15:59So in ten minutes,
16:00ten minutes you'll burn
16:01about a bag of chips.
16:03Seventy calories.
16:04So understanding,
16:06getting people to understand
16:06that you can't outwork
16:08or exercise a bad diet.
16:10You can take all the Ozempic,
16:11you can take the Wagova,
16:12you can take any of these
16:13quote unquote miracle things.
16:15If you're eating a bad diet,
16:16you're not going to lose weight.
16:17It begins with food.
16:19Nutrient-rich,
16:20calorie-poor foods.
16:21And my example is,
16:23has anyone ever ate
16:24a whole head of cabbage?
16:26A whole pot?
16:26No.
16:28I'll bust.
16:28Not going to make for a good day
16:30or a good night if you do.
16:30I wouldn't advise it.
16:31But that's a whole lot of food.
16:33So nutrient-rich,
16:34calorie-poor foods.
16:36I won't say calorie-poor,
16:36but calorie-less dense foods.
16:38Yeah.
16:38And coloring up your plate.
16:40Showing those examples,
16:42starting with the babies
16:43and taking it all the way up
16:44because kids will change
16:45a household.
16:47Absolutely.
16:47Yeah, very true, very true.
16:48And lastly,
16:49we know that much of the issues
16:50around obesity that we deal with
16:52in our community,
16:53it comes from generations before us
16:54that just didn't know any better
16:55and pass those issues down
16:57in regards to diet and how we eat.
16:59So for the men and women
17:00in the audience
17:00raising children of their own,
17:02how can we begin to make the changes
17:04that are necessary
17:04to turn this health crisis around
17:06and positively impact our children
17:08and generations after them?
17:11Well, I'll let Dr. Washington go first.
17:13So that is a great question
17:15because always when I talk about
17:17a weight loss program for the mom,
17:19I always ask,
17:19okay, is husband on board?
17:22Right?
17:22Because you need
17:23an accountability partner.
17:24It makes no sense
17:25for you to start the diet,
17:26but you still got the chips
17:27and the candy
17:28and the sodas
17:29and no fresh produce
17:31in your house.
17:32Okay?
17:33And when they're like,
17:33oh, my kids,
17:34they like this food.
17:35No, no, no.
17:36You buy the food
17:37and you program
17:38what they do like.
17:39If they see you doing it,
17:41they're going to want to do it.
17:42So it has to be a family effort.
17:44Childhood obesity
17:45and these problems,
17:47there are studies
17:47that show that
17:48when kids,
17:49they asked,
17:51when does cardiovascular disease start?
17:52Right?
17:53So they all looked
17:54at the pediatric patients
17:56and they saw that
17:57with poor diets,
17:58they started to develop
17:59coronary artery plaques
18:00by age five years old.
18:02So even though
18:03they may not be obese today,
18:04you're setting them up
18:05for heart disease later.
18:07So feeding them
18:08all of the processed,
18:09frozen foods,
18:10all of those things
18:10are going to individually
18:12land them up
18:13in a poor health spot.
18:14So I try to encourage
18:15because I'm a mom,
18:16I have twins,
18:16I work,
18:17I do a lot of things.
18:18My slow cooker is my friend.
18:20You press the button,
18:21you got red beans,
18:22you know?
18:23You come home,
18:24ooh, somebody been cooking all day.
18:25Right?
18:25So those things
18:27are relatively inexpensive.
18:29So making time for yourself,
18:30again, we're busy,
18:31but you have to make time
18:32for your body.
18:33You only get one.
18:34And especially for your kids
18:36and your whole household.
18:37I have seen whole families change
18:39and look completely different
18:40and feel completely different,
18:42especially when we talk
18:43about little black girls,
18:44right?
18:44As they grow older,
18:46they notice
18:46and they pick on them
18:47when they're overweight,
18:48right?
18:49Imagine how they feel
18:50when they're able
18:50to eat healthier,
18:51they're able to participate
18:53in physical education longer
18:54than mental
18:55and building up
18:56the self-esteem.
18:57So it's really,
18:58really a big issue,
18:58but it's a family effort.
19:00Dr. Graves?
19:01So high-functioning societies
19:02are child-centered,
19:04adult-governed,
19:04and elderly-ruled.
19:05Now, if you take that society
19:07to a family model,
19:09the family that cooks together
19:11and plays together
19:12lives a real long time.
19:14Cooking together,
19:16cooking,
19:16teaching your kids
19:17healthy habits,
19:18challenging your kids,
19:19pizza night,
19:20who can make the,
19:21and sometimes you'll get
19:23jelly beans and licorice
19:24and crazy stuff
19:25on the pizza,
19:25but you gotta,
19:26if you make it,
19:26you gotta eat it,
19:27but challenging it,
19:28making it fun,
19:29letting everyone look
19:30for healthy recipes
19:31to cook,
19:32and having a taste contest
19:33with a prize at the end.
19:34I keep bringing up hula hoops.
19:36If you want to incorporate
19:37your grandparents,
19:39you would be surprised.
19:40I challenge anyone in here
19:41to talk to their mom,
19:43challenge their mom
19:43or grandmother
19:44to a hula hoop contest.
19:46Kids don't hula hoop,
19:47we didn't hula hoop,
19:47but they did.
19:48I'm telling you,
19:48they start wrapping
19:49around their arms
19:50and jumping the whole nine,
19:53but it's all about
19:54the smiles and the fun
19:55and the talking
19:56and the feeling included.
19:58You get it at both ends
19:59of the spectrum.
20:00Your seniors,
20:01as elders,
20:01they govern the family,
20:02they feel included.
20:04The kids,
20:04they love it
20:05because they get to play
20:06with mom and grandmother.
20:07Prime example
20:08is my grandmother
20:08started us mall walking
20:09when I was 11 years old
20:11and all the way
20:12through med school,
20:13it ended up being
20:13my mom,
20:14my grandmother,
20:15my grandfather,
20:15my uncle,
20:16my aunt,
20:16my sister,
20:17my three cousins,
20:18whatever dude
20:18they were dating
20:19at the time.
20:19We started mall walking
20:21and ironically,
20:22we come from
20:23five generations
20:23of diabetics.
20:24None of us are diabetic.
20:25Wow.
20:26Amen.
20:27And she changed our food
20:28to she had us
20:28eating off sauces
20:29instead of a plate
20:30and my grandfather
20:31wasn't having it.
20:31He was upset.
20:33He still wanted
20:34a big piece of chicken
20:34and a big plate
20:35but it's working
20:36and it's working
20:37doing those things
20:38just loving on each other
20:40and making it fun
20:41starting in the kitchen
20:42and going outside
20:44and playing.
20:44You'd be surprised.
20:46Just don't let your mom
20:47be the banker
20:48because mom,
20:49mom,
20:50yeah.
20:51From Ireland,
20:52I only like vegetables
20:53when I started having them
20:54cook with me.
20:55Well,
20:55and he's like,
20:55oh,
20:56these green beans
20:56are the best I ever tasted.
20:57He said,
20:57yeah,
20:58they are.
20:59Because they cooked it.
21:00Exactly.
21:01Ain't that something.
21:01I love that.
21:02I love that.
21:03So you guys hear that
21:04you've got to cook
21:04with your kids
21:05to help them
21:05to learn some
21:06of these healthy habits.
21:07We've got to work
21:08on our mental health
21:09so that we can have
21:10better habits
21:11when we eat
21:11so we're not indulging
21:13and doing the most
21:13with our Blue Bell ice cream
21:14even though we love Blue Bell.
21:15We love Blue Bell.
21:16Hey, come on now.
21:17You don't have to
21:18bring it back to that.
21:19And you've got to just
21:20go and see your doctor.
21:21Make sure you're making
21:22these appointments.
21:23They made some really
21:24great points
21:24and I hope that you guys
21:25gathered a lot from that.
21:26So let's clap it up
21:27for Dr. Courtney Washington
21:28and Dr. Eric Griggs
21:30helping us kick off
21:32Essence Fest right.
21:33Thank you both so much
21:34for joining us today
21:35and dropping knowledge.
21:36It was an honor to have you.
21:38So thank you.
21:39And thank you guys
21:39for sitting and being here
21:40for the first panel.
21:41We've got more coming.
21:42So thank you so much.
21:55We'll see you next time.
